Had an early dinner there today. Was seated in a booth in the bar area. The female bartender was so loud ! We could hear everything she said to anyone at the bar. It was quite annoying, service was very slow considering we were about the only ones eating except for the people at the bar. Food was okay, nothing to rave about. read more

We enjoyed everything about our meal. Nice decor, attentive staff and great food. I was surely tempted by the bacon Mac and cheese but went with the duck confit Shepard's pie. At first I thought it was a small portion but by the time I finished I was full. My mom had the fish stew which was also delightful with a touch of curry in the broth. Angry orchard was the only cider on the menu, but there was a large list of beer, bourbon, and whiskeys. Can be pricey for lunch if you go with an entree, but sandwiches and burgers can be cheaper options. I think it was worth it, and with the yelp deal it is a total steal. read more

Sorry but when you serve the chowder in a bowl with baked on food from the dinner before and the fish entree is served raw in the middle, it was the worst experience. Three-and-a-half stars. Seems only fair to say we got the Yelp deal ($50 for $25), which made it easy to round up. At the lower price, it's a pretty good deal. There's a lot to like, but not love, at the Rose & Crown. My wife and I got specialty cocktails, appetizers, and sandwiches: they were all good. I'd love to paint a stronger picture than that, but "good" just about covers it. It's got a cute atmosphere, though they should probably settle on how committed they are to the British-ish theme: the menu clarifies that "chips" means "fries," and the waitress clarifies that the "chips" are, indeed, fries. Elsewhere, the menu calls fries "fries." Whatever; pick a theme and go with it. Potatoes shouldn't be complicated. Each of the specialty drinks might have been a little watered down for my tastes, but they were fairly innovative and certainly delicious. I upgraded my regular fries to the truffled version, and I can't quite see what the big deal is. (Other Yelpers really seemed to like them, which is why I ordered them.) I might caution against the crab cake sandwich; you'll find a better (and larger) one at Striper Bites and elsewhere in the region. A note about service: on the night that we went, we were told that the restaurant would be closing early (roughly 8:30) because they were short on staff. Whatever problems they might have been having, it didn't show up. Our waitress was attentive and the food came out a good pace. read more

We each got salads. Spinach salad had way too many mushrooms and mushy roasted peppers. Proportions of ingredients were off too. Watermelon corn salad had huge pieces of watermelon and tons of smoked salmon and again the proportions of all ingredients were off. Wonderful meal and service. While the hostesses left a bit to be desired the wait staff more than made up for it. Quick, refilled drinks without us asking, kind, asked us if we wanted our daughter's meal brought out as soon as it was ready or with our meals. Just so kind. Then there was the food, delicious! When we go back we want to try the fish and chips, we heard they are amazing. I had a grilled chicken sandwich and my husband has a bacon burger, both were good. The best selection was nice as well. The decor is modern, rustic, british. It was not the most quiet restaurant, but it wasn't loud either. The restroom was very well kept and beautifully designed. We went here during a severe storm preluging to a huricane. The bar area was very nice and inviting. Happy hour offered a great selection of craft beer and we picked Brew Free or Die by 21st Mendment. For appetizers we had hot chicken wings and calimori. Both were exquisite. Our entries were NY strip for my wife and crab. Ake sandwich for me. Her ny strip was tender but very charred tasting and way more than Medium which she wanted. My crab cake was very citrus y and I bit into a part that reminded me of fruit cake. Now, I like fruit cake but not on my crab. Will only come for happy hour drinks. read more

Went there on a cool rainy day looking for some nice pub food. Instead the food was below average with poor service. They forgot my order as the entire table was served their meal and I should have just refused it anyway. The Chicken Pot Pie was a yellow soup with chicken cubes and a crust on top. Looked like it was frozen and then microwaved. We were also there for lunch and their faces dropped when we were a big table. The peach raisin coleslaw didn't have any raisins. I am a local and try to visit the restaurants in Lewes so I can tell my family, friends, and guests where to dine. I don't think I have dined at a bad restaurant in Lewes. I may prefer some over others, but I think they are all good. I do really like the Rose & Crown atmosphere. It definitely reminds me of a local bar, but welcomes anyone.The service is friendly and we have never had a problem with too long of a wait time. I don't eat burgers that often, but when I saw the burger was called the Best Damn Burger I thought I better try it. It was amazing. I told my husband anytime I needed a burger fix we would be going to the Rose&Crown. My husband has had the Shepard's Pie several times and really enjoyed it. I have also had the Portabello Mushroom meal and I thought it was very good. After reading many of the reviews, I find it interesting that people have such strong opinions. I have eaten in many different restaurants both globally and locally and I know not all food is to my liking. It could be that I don't like how it is prepared or the specific seasonings, but it doesn't mean someone else won't like it. It seems a shame that a small business could be negatively impacted by a few people who for one reason or another did not like their food even though tastes are very different. We did a test run and stuck with the bacon cheesburger and the chicken sandwich. First the place is slow. Not bad service, just food will take some time. Overall I was impressed with the decor and food. The wife got sweet potato fries and she loved them.. the burger was not 100% cooked the way I ordered. But overall it was better than average.. The food made me want to go back, and the prices didn't give me sticker shock or make me feel like I overpaid. We will actually try the entrees next week. read more

I keep giving this place additional chances because I like the ambiance. My last 2 meals there were disappointing. I had the tomato soup and grilled cheese at one lunch. The soupd was good, but the cheese was not melted in the grilled cheese sandwich--the bread looked perfectly grilled, but the inside was 2 perfectly sliced pieces of cheese. I expected more "moosh" in the grilled cheese sandwich. The next time, I ordered the butternut squash soup (on one of the coldest days of the year). It came out of the kitchen barely warm. When the waitress asked how was everything and we pointed out the low temp of the soup, she took it back to the kitchen and delivered a bowl of steaming hot soup--it was delicious. The wait staff is very gracious. But the kitchen needs some help. read more

We held my wedding brunch (the day after the wedding) in Hotel Rodney, right next to Rose and Crown. They catered the brunch and were incredibly flexible, helpful, and professional. Stopped by for appetizers and refreshments during the Lewes House Tour. They've done a nice job with renovating the old Beseme though there is little semblance to the original Lingo's R&C - beer starts at $6.00 pint. However the appetizers were very good and had offered something for the varying tastes in our group. The fried basket of tater tots, chips, and onion rings really hit the spot after being on our feet most of the day. The staff was busy but friendly and covered for each other if one was busy tending to another table. Look forward to visiting there for dinner. read more

There was so much local buzz about this new place that my husband and I had to check it out. What a treat! I am a huge calamari fan but find 90% of it over cooked and horrible. By far, the best calamari I have ever had. YEAH! The ambiance is spot on. The design and feel is really well done. The bar area is really great for large gatherings. The ceiling and the lights are really impressive. The light bulbs look like they are wrapped in a metal on the bottom. Can't explain it very well, except they are unique and beautiful. We got a great parking spot with no meters. Was seated immediately and the wait staff was stellar. Our waitress explained everything really well and gave my husband some hints on her favorites. Portions were very generous and everything was stellar! We loved it so much, we are going tomorrow for their 'buy 1 gift card get the other 50% off' for many of our customers as Holiday Thanks. So I remember when the Rose & Crown was around the corner and down the block, and used to have a great time there. For whatever reason I have been unable to visit Lewes over the years as often as I used to- it is a very historic little town, and now I have a lunch/dinner destination to look very much forward to. The newer Rose & Crown location- on the main entrance level of the Hotel Rodney- is nice. It has that "old-timey" charm to it. If I were staying at that hotel I would be hanging out in the Rose & Crown every day. The food and service were excellent, our waitress was super helpful and I just wish I could remember her name as I write this- I guess I am getting a little older. I had the bacon mac & cheese, and this was no ordinary mac & cheese! It was high end ingredient mac & cheese and I told our waitress- and I quote- "it's like there's a party in my mouth, and everyone's invited!". My son had a great grilled cheese sandwich with a cup of tomato soup, and again, they were high quality, not two slices of plain bread with cheap cheese melted inside. And the soup was definitely not something that came from a can. I will be trying to work my way up to Lewes more often now that I have rediscovered the Rose & Crown. read more

I almost feel like calling the food here "Pub Food" does it a dis-service. I have eaten here several times since the place opened in November and have ordered something different each time and loved it. The first time I came for lunch with a friend who raved about the mac and cheese which is made with 3 types of cheese and bacon. I ordered it myself the next time I came for dinner and i can confirm was excellent and also a generous portion. I ordered the Shepherds Pie made with Duck Confit that time and I didn't even really think that I was going to love it because I've never been a big fan of Duck... but since I always used to get the SP at the old Rose and Crown I decided to try it. It was amazing. I wish I was better at describing food but it almost seemed to have a slight taste of sherry to it? Anyhow, of the dishes I have had so far, the Sheperd's pie would be my top pick. The 3rd time I ate there I ordered the shortrib sliders at the bar. This was a very small dish with only 3 sliders on the plate but it was also about half the price of the regular meal and was really really good. They do meat well. This is not a good place to come if you are on a diet LOL. Anyhow I'd recommend the sliders if you're just grazing and not too hungry. One thing that was a little confusing was that they also have "chips" here which are french fries (with all different kinds of creative toppings) and also they have "chips" which come with some of the sandwiches which are the regular style chips. I think the menu should explain this a little better. I would call this a great place to go for "foodie" comfort food and also to watch the game or have a drink with friends (there are 3 tvs at the bar and a decent beer selection (though I'd suggest beefing the beer list up a little). The decor is British pub meets uptown bistro. Very comfortable. read more

We ate there on Thursday and had a very good lunch. I had a lamb burger on pita bread with peppers and onions on it and I enjoyed it a lot. It was a big portion so I brought half of it home. My husband had a cheeseburger with fries and he enjoyed both of them. We also had a beer each and it was happy hour time so the drinks were reasonably priced. We ended up eating here when every restaurant had a two hour wait. Seeing many four star ratings we thought we would take a chance. We had a party of 8 and ordered six different dishes. The fish and chips were drowning in oil. The fries were so soggy that they were almost inedible. The chicken sandwich with Carmelized onions was the only acceptable meal. The Portabella entree was cold, covered with canned tomato sauce and the mushrooms were really tough. I can eat almost anything but I left my half of the dish basically untouched. We also had to wait an hour for our food even though the restaurant was not full. The beer was decent and the only part of this dinner that I would rate a four. Wow is all I can say. I'm only giving 1 star because 0 isn't an option. What a difference a year makes. Social media reminded me that a year ago, I had lunch here and I craved it immediately. The "Best Damn Bacon Burger" with garlic Parmesan fries used to be my favorite meal from here. I just picked up my lunch (take-out) and I get home and what's in my take-out container? Garbage. The burger didn't have its caramelized onions and it was dry and disgusting... Which doesn't really make sense since there were random spots of undercooked meat?! How do you even manage that? The burger was also significantly smaller than the bun. (aka:there wasn't a whole lot there) The "garlic Parmesan fries" only had Parmesan on them.... If there was any garlic involved, I'd love to know where it was hiding. Apparently losing Chef Jesse Brammer was their biggest mistake. I won't be back and I'll be sure to let everyone know that their food isn't worth a damn anymore. So disappointed. read more
