I like ordering it with the feta on the side (thought he waitress told me if i wanted more feta for the price, its better to ask for it on the salad). Tip: order it in a large bowl/a bigger bowl for easier mixing purposes. If you desire, if you ask for the walnuts on the side, it makes for a nice dessert! Also, I love their monthly $1 dip sample. This is another of my regular haunts. I grew up and live (again) in Tustin, and have been going here since I was a boy. This is a special sort of place that fits perfectly in Old Town Tustin. The menu is eclectic, the decor is unusual, and the staff, most of whom have been there for years, are unique. The food is almost all fantastic, with a vegetarian/healthy slant to just about everything. They do have meat dishes, but really specialize in salads (which are mammoth), wraps, and other healthy items. My personal favorites include the Dala, shrimp and avocado, California Mediterranean, and Cobb salads, the Greek and turkey-avocado wraps, and the nachos with killer chili. The servers are all friendly and attentive, and even when the place is packed (most of the time), service is good. Decent place to eat. First time here. I ordered the garlic chicken wrap and fiance had the BBQ chicken sandwich. We also had the brownie and ice cream which was good dispite having nuts in the brownie. Mine was OK......was hoping for a garlicky taste but was over ran by the lettuce and cucumbers in it. The fiance said his was good but super messy. Both came with a super yummy pasta salad and a melon slice. Huge menu of everything from bagels.....salads.....pasta....soups....wraps. and more. We recently moved to Tustin and have visited Rutabegorz a hand full of times. We always go with my family and friends who have lived here since the 60's, as they are faithful customers and don't like change. Both my stars are for the ambiance, menu, and food. Not the service. The menu provides a variety of plates that cater to everyone. The food was always very good except the last time. I ordered the curry chicken sandwich and there was NO curry. The chicken was very plain and dry. Our server disappeared and didn't come back to check on us until everyone was finished. Every time we have gone, the service was nothing more then TERRIBLE. We have had the older lady wait on us a variety of times and she always seems to be irritated and makes us feel rushed. We have to ask for refills, carry out boxes and the check. The last time we had a few different younger servers wait on us and they weren't much better. They never gave us refills or even checked on us until we were finished and ready for our bill. Next time my family wants to go out to eat, I am gong to recommend we go elsewhere. read more

A friend invited me to have dinner here last night, and I was pleasantly surprised. We got there a little later than expected, about 40 minutes before closing time. I always feel bad because I don't want to be the reason the staff stay late or anything, but they were super pleasant and accommodating - I didn't feel rushed at all (I did still leave on time). It's a quaint little cafe-type feel with outside and inside seating. We ordered way too much food for us to handle, but we had no complaints on the quality and the price was extremely reasonable. We had pita and hummus appetizer (hummus is amazing! fresh and lemon-y). I then had the Little Caesar (which wasn't that little, but that's not a bad thing!), and a grilled cheese with tomato. I didn't know it came with pasta salad (think its homemade, it was good!!), so goes without saying, I had to save a lot for leftovers but it was still just as good later. I stopped in for lunch with my other half and was pleasantly surprised by this adorable restaurant in a charming part of town. Street parking was easy as we arrived at the tail end of lunch. The decor is homey and welcoming. We were one of three other couples in the dining room, so service was quick. Our server was helpful with navigating the large menu and gave solid recommendations as it was our first time. I had a cup of cockie leeky soup as recommended by our server (delicious and surprisingly filling) and the falafel wrap. The wrap was good and a large portion. My biggest complaint is that it was served with a pasta salad that I was not expecting. It's absolutely possible that I may have missed it listed on the menu, but I wish I could have substituted it. The accompanying slice of watermelon is a nice touch, though! My guy had the large (read as: massive!!) garlic chicken salad that he thought was delicious and the artichoke dip, which he described as "the real deal." It certainly was. I have tried the stuffed mushrooms and the mac n cheese. Both were phenomenal! The real standout is the pumpkin cookie. I was looking for a place to take my vegetarian daughter for a nice birthday dinner. She always compromises at other restaurants, so I wanted to pick a place that would give her tons of options. That is about the only good thing I can say about our experience- it is VERY vegetarian and vegan friendly. We arrived around 7:10pm on Sunday night. They close at 8pm, but there were still a lot of customers. We found an open table, and proceeded to seat ourselves. The menus were already on the table, which was nice, because it took over 10 minutes for a staff member to even acknowledge us. He took our drink order, and disappeared for awhile, but did eventually come with our drinks. The server finally came, and took our order. My husband and I ordered side Caesar salads, which were large for side salads. While mine was great, my husband's was actually warm to the touch. Really kinda gross. Never offered drink refills, we had to flag down the busboy to get refills. The entrees didn't all come out at the same time..... 3 came first, then the next 2 about 5 minutes later. My daughter ordered the Mediterranean salad, which came out completely wrong, she had to send it back. My daughter's boyfriend ordered a burrito, which was scalding hot on the inside. My other daughter, the Birthday Girl, ordered the Veggie Enchiladas, and only ate a few bites. The corn tortillas were overcooked, it didn't look or taste appealing at all. The spinach lasagna was decent, but nothing note-worthy, overcooked noodles, but tons of yummy spinach. My husband's Heap sandwich was adequate, nothing outstanding. The server did apologize for the service when she brought the check, and gave us free cookies, which was a nice touch (and the only reason she got a small tip). We have eaten at the Old Towne Orange location, and have enjoyed it. But this location, service and food were subpar. I love Rutabegorz. I was in Fullerton previously and had gone to that one a lot. They have options for gluten free and vegan. Salads can be made gluten. Free so long as you make them aware. And ask about dressings. They typically have a seasonal dish that's gluten free as well. I recently went to this one in Tustin and I got the gluten free pesto linguini with gluten free garlic bread and it was phenomenal!!! It was one of the season items. They should make it a staple menu item. I couldn't believe how good it was and the gluten free bread was some of the best gluten free garlic bread that I've had!! Everything is so reasonably priced. The staff were all very friendly! 4 starts only because for such a healthy place and a restaurant of this nature I would expect more gluten free options. There's an ok amount but for what it is you would think there would be more. I haven't been to the Fullerton location in about 2 years but that's the original I believe. i love Rutabegorz! My aunt lives in Tustin and this is one our staple lunch places, when I visit. The menu is quite extensive, but we usually stick to the same thing. We share a tuna bagel and either the Dahlia Salad or a fruit place. The fruit place is huge, with a great variety of fruit, not just a mixed cup. The food is all high quality and really good. Rutabegorz has two dining rooms and it should be tons of seating, but this place is very popular and fills up fast. We try to arrive by eleven-thirty for lunch, so that we don't have problems finding a table. It's usually completely full by noon. Parking seems trick, but they have a huge lot behind the restaurant. It's usually easier than trying to find a street spot and like the street, it's free. I cannot highly recommend this place enough, it's one of my favorites. read more

I have been there twice for lunch. Both times I ordered the shrimp and avocado sandwich, which is served in pita bread. I know that is boring and contrary to my usual practice, but I have a weakness for shrimp in pita going back to the days when the Nordstrom cafes had such offerings and Rutabegorz makes a good one. Very disappointed in the lack of customer service. I came on my lunch break and wrote my name down for a table. I wasn't sure how long the wait would be and I was on limited time so I placed my order to go just in case. When my name was called for the table I had let the waitress know I placed a to go order and if It can be changed to dine in. She said no that It was not possible. There were tables available and no one waiting after me for a table so I did not understand why this couldn't have been accommodated. My boyfriend went Inside And asked another waitress. Before she could answer the manager cut her off and told my boyfriend no. I am very disappointed and felt a sense of racism (we are Mexican) from the Caucasian female staff not being friendly or accommodating to paying customers. I don't like writing negative reviews but I was just really underwhelmed by my experience here. My sister had hyped it up and I expected delicious, wholesome food. Service was abysmal; they weren't busy, several waitstaff were on hand but it took ten minutes to get water. Our waitress was friendly and personable but I didn't like being made to keep waiting. I ordered a Chinese chicken salad and its vague description on the menu led me to believe it'd be simple greens, chicken, almonds, mandarin segments, and maybe some green onions. Instead I got a comically large bowl (it makes Elaine's big salad seem like a side salad) with greens, cucumber, zucchini, squash, tomatoes, carrots, crunchy noodles, almonds, very little chicken and mandarin segments that had an unpleasant taste that was very clearly the direct result of being from a can. I ended up getting a cup of the Cockie Leekie soup and it was fine, just nothing special and I had to salt it. Meh. read more

This restaurant is busy on the weekends, but well worth the wait. Parking is in the rear. We found ourselves waiting in the doorway for a minute until we were acknowledged by the wait staff. We waited about 20 minutes for a table - first available. Next time I would like to eat outside. There were about six tables outside. I ordered the popular garlic chicken salad. It was excellent. The walnuts are a treat because they are sweet and chewy. Our waitress shared that next time I can ask them to toss the salad - since it was a little tough to do in the smaller bowl. The wait staff were nice and attentive, but rushed- I wouldn't blame them though. For dessert, I had a drink called the Yucatan. Oh man, it was so good. We decided that today was going to be the day to pop in. We walked in not knowing if we had to seat ourselves & were immediately attracted to all the decor. Very cool! We sat ourselves out on the patio & were promptly greeted. The waitress was very attentive and offered suggestions. I kept it simple with the Garlic Chicken Sandwich that came with a fresh pasta salad. My daughter had the Mac-n-cheese with a small Caesar side salad. Everything was delicious! The waitress offered dessert but we chose to pass after the portions of our meals were quite plentiful. She did recommend the cheesecake & talked us in to taking it to go.
