I had a great experience at Ryan's Automotive..... My 99 Durango would not pass smog. I had taken it to a few mechanics, they changed parts but none were able to pin point the source of the problem. I had remembered seeing a commercial on Ryan's Automotive, dropped my Durango off in the morning and before noon received a call that the problem was in the computer. Beware of this shop. As i read all the countless negative reviews of this shop. I see the that they pulled the same ripoff on mutitiple customers. Ryan gives you mutiple papers to sign then gives you only the top copy of the signed invoice. You walk away thinking you paid what the job should cost. However Ryan and his trained staff of crooks have you sign muliple invoices give you only the top invoice and they PURPOSELY not give you the other invoices. you walk away thinking you paid $300 dollars for the job but in realty you pay 6 or 7 hundred dollars for the job because Ryan and and his staff dont give you the whole bill. Zero stars. This shop is a rip off. They charge me $200 and did not pass my break inspection. They said I needed $750 worth of work done but I checked the list of things needed and it was false. They said I was missing a bolt in one area and a washer in another area but both items were there. I took my car to another shop and they passed me with no work done and a lower inspection fee. read more

Disappointing. $178 to tell me I need a new engine for $7000 after only diagnosing oil pressure. I shared the audio noise of the car but they didn't hear it. They said the oil pump changeout may not fix the problem but that's what they diagnosed as the problem. Do your research and go to recommended, reputable mechanics who can actually take the time to assess the codes and issues and offer least to most invasive remedies. I had to call them for an update which lead to 4 days without a car. Never again. read more

Avoid this place at all costs! Read the Reviews... 5 Stars for damage control from friends, then 1 Stars. I only had new battery clamps put on (the battery is right on top!). When I got an estimate later it wasn't clear that they were combining that with the original estimate (parts +labor)....$495.00 later I complained to the technician who explained they just bought a custom crimping machine and that it was done professionally? The end copper wires were exposed at the clamps not cleanly covered to the end and some were sticking out. I said I wanted to talk to Ryan himself. A lackey regular patron (unwelcome) jumped in on my conversation and was saying, "well cost of gas has gone up!" Ryan the owner called me back once I got home and did nothing to correct or adjust. They told me nothing was wrong with my car. Which is bullshit. Theres plenty wrong with my car. It squeeks when i break. It has trouble starting sometimes due to loose bolts on the battery which i fixed myself afterwards. A number of things could have been worked on. They didn't do a damn thing. Guy at the front desk called a customer with a big problem "An open checkbook." For $200 check my fucking car for a problem and tell me what can be done to fix it. Instead I'm told nothing is wrong. The owner kept my car for 31 days for a suppose $600 sensor job when I got it back the Car had fast food cups, debris & no gas like somebody was using it as a daily driver. He charge me $1600 then the next day the check engine light came on he charge me another 1600. Please be aware of this company and giving fake estimates! Talked to Ben about my brake line that was leaking. I got more help in one phone call than I would have taking it to someone down south. I am so happy to be back in the Bay where people are helpful, polite, pleasant and kind. It was a breath of fresh air!!! He was able to answer all my mechanical questions and even offered to see if he could pinpoint it before a full brake inspection. I was so impressed that he knew exactly what I was talking about and actually helped me over the phone. I usually get blown off when I call and people just say, "bring it in and we will look at it". Had a horrible experience similar to some of the other reviewers here. They charged close to $200 for a 15 minute inspection that they made me wait 2 hours for. The first hour: I saw the technician spend about 5-10 minutes "inspecting" only one brake light, glance lazily around the car, and proceed to work on something completely different for the remaining hour. At hour 2: he comes back for the "brake inspection", where he spends less than 10 minutes checking only one brake pad, and then again proceeds to work on a different vehicle for the remaining time. In other words; they inflate their labor in order to overcharge the customer to gain an easy buck. 10-20 minutes of work into 2 hours of labor. Disgusting. Avoid this place at all costs. read more

This is the only location certified for an official brake and light inspection in Fairfield and Vacaville. You would need one if you purchased a salvage vehicle. It's $128.10 for the inspection. A body shop owner in SF assured me they were more reasonable than some of the prices there. The first thing I noticed when I walked in were all the certificates on the board. They had one wall completely covered with AAA approved, member of the BBB since 19XX, mechanics listed with ASE certifications, local newspaper article, etc. It didn't just cover one wall but spread to two other walls as well. They're even listed as the best in Solano county. Regardless of their accomplishments and many "decorations" I felt they were just average. My inspection was supposed to take 2 - 2 1/2 hours. It ended up taking over 3 hours but that's understandable and I'm not marking them down for taking a little longer. They did call me back when they said they would. Nothing was found wrong with the car so either they were honest or not thorough. I had asked them if any other type of "general" inspection was also being conducted and they told me they were going to take the wheels and other parts off to look at it anyway. Prior to going here, I had Firestone tell me my brake fluid needed to be flushed and my rear control arms lower both and bushings needed to be replaced. They didn't mention anything to me leading me to believe they didn't do anything else which is considered standard everywhere else at an independent auto shop if they truly care about the customer and the car. The customer service is lacking as there was no apology for running late with the car. I was made to wait forever when I came to pick up the car and not even a simple, "I'll be with you in a minute was said." Not to mention there was a car blocking me from leaving with nothing said again. Their prices are also on the high end. I had a quote run me $500 more. They may do quality work and may even be the "best" but certainly not in customer service. Another independent auto shop that I'm planning on taking my car to is open on Saturdays, works only on Japanese cars, has loaner cars available, and will even drive you to work/home if you're in the local area. Ryan's does not have the option of giving you a ride home. A 25 min walk home isn't fun when it's 40F outside and windy. read more

I was shocked when I got my bill for $1332 for a fuel pump for my 2003 Chevy Astro Van. I had not been given an estimate for the bill. If I had been told that it would be anything over $1000, I would have called around and found that other local garages were charging considerably less for the same thing. Plus tax etc., other places prices ranged from $875-$1080. The entire job took Ryan's an hour and a half and I was charged $717 in labor. I contacted CA's Bureau of Auto Repair but there's nothing that they could do since I signed the fine print when paying my bill indicating I had been given an estimate. The BAR at least got me back the $132 for double-charging for the fuel pump. Learn from my pain: demand an estimate when you go to Ryan's (or any garage) before they start work. If I could give them 0 stars, I would. First of all, it cost me over $200 to get a diagnostic on my truck.. then they told me it would be close to $900 to fix it. I had no other option because my truck was literally dying on the way there. However, it was a simple 3 hour fix they told me. I pick up my truck and get my bill back... 76% of my bill went to LABOR! Rip-Off! Feeds on housewives who don't know cars. I've been working on cars for 40 years. Recently I had to have a new A/C compressor installed and just didn't want to do it myself. Went to Ryans who said, "No Problem" $1,100. I thought that was steep but, like I said, I didn't want to screw with it so I said OK. Three days and $2,100 later I got the car back. A bunch of "diagnostic" line items. I told them I knew it was the compressor and just wanted a new one. The owner, Ryan Payne, yelled and said we don't do anything without diagnostics. This isn't what I asked for nor what I approved. They have a fancy shop in a great, highly visible location. If you want superior automotive service and customer service, go to ryan's automotive. I was a little reluctant to go here based on thier reviews, but after the issues I have had with other automotive places I figured I would give them a shot and im glad I did. First of all when you walk in you are greeted with respect and a smile. They have tons of certifications for all of there technitians. (Which by the way you dont find at almost any shop). They have a bunch of certifictions from seminars and newspaper articles. After I was greeted, I told the gentleman what my issue was which was my check engine light, and I needed to get it fixed. They told me a check engine diagnostic was a flat rate of 165.00. Which I was fine about. After they found out what my problem was which was a voltage problem to the engine caused by a bad 12v wiring connection at the battery. They also noted that I have a coolant leak which I knew about but three other places couldnt find. I authorized them to do cause I was ecstatic when they found the problem. They fixed my coolant leak on my vehicle and fixed my voltage problem. Thank you! Ryans was by far one of the better if not best experiences I have ever delt with. Their prices are a little high but you get the results you want and a service thats top notch. If you need automotive service definitely choose ryans. You wont be disappointed. read more

Well first off of I could give this place negative stars, it would be -5*****. This business is so ridiculously over priced. Took my vehicle there to have a coolant leak checked, they did find where it was coming from so I guess I can give them an at a boy for that. But here comes the good part, not sure what the dudes name is behind the counter but he wanted to charge me $1850.00 to replace the the timing chain cover gasket where the leak was coming from. Yes it is a big job, but come on man, then I asked when he could get to it, "well I'm down a guy on vacation, so it will be in the next coupe of day's". So I go down to Ryan's 3 day's later and there sits my truck in the parking lot, so I ask him what was going on and he tells me "we are just getting ready to pull it in and start on it". So I go home and call Vacaville Dodge and ask them how much it cost to do the same job. I get an estimate of $1150.00, so I drive back to Ryan's to get my truck and get nothing but a bad attitude from this Dude, he knew he was ripping me off and he also told me that they have to remove the oil pan to repair the timing chain cover gasket. I asked the dealership about it and they said no we don't have to remove it to replace the timing cover gasket. So to sum it all up, stay far away from this shop and take your cars to dealership. Ryan's Automotive is very clean shop but that's because they don't work on cars so don't let the pictures fool you. Update: took my truck to Vacaville Dodge that day I got it back from Ryan's and got my truck back the same day, now that's what I call service and saved my self $500.00. read more

Called for an estimate on a transmission rebuild on my 2003 Silverado. Talked to some smartazz technician that had absolutely no customer service skills whatsoever. He said it would run about $4200. Took it to Aamco and had it done for $2800 and it's run great every since. These guys think that just because they advertise honesty and great work that they can charge outrageous prices. I went in to get a simple smog check, 3hrs later they came back and said i failed because of aftermarket parts on my jeep that were illegal for that year model. After paying for absolutely nothing i went back home and googled my Model No. for the aftermarket parts. Sure enough it was made for my year model. If you want to be priced gouged this is the shop for you. I went in and told them exactly what i needed. My front under engine cover came off. and i needed the bolts tightened so my wouldn't wouldn't drag on the road as i was driving. Keep in mind that my Ford dealership 4 months earlier charged me $250 dollars to put a new cover, new bolts and instal it. Ryan's price gouging shop charged me $85 dollars to just look at the situation and say yes it needs new bolts . After Ryan bought 4 new bolts from the dealership and his shop over inflating the cost of the bolts and putting them in. i spent a total of $362. Nearly 50 percent more then the Ford dealership charged me for the whole new engine guard cover and new bolts and installation. IN 30 minutes of time Ryan gave me a bill that said i owed $193 then slipped in an additional bill of $169. i thought i was signing for the one price but he hid the cost in 2 separate invoices. it was until later that i realized i was charged nearly 400 dollars. Brought my fiancée's car in here for a break and light inspection for a car, turnaround time was okay, but they came back and it failed for numerous reasons, not my complaint. Some of it was legit. My complaint is that these guys are running a racket, they told me that the springs on her drum brakes were installed backwards. I looked at the parts breakdown, and they weren't. And then we noticed that the back up lights weren't even working, yet they failed to notice it. Overall bad experience and the guy at the front counter has no idea what customer service is and seemed to have a bad attitude. Won't ever suggest this place to anyone. read more

I took my truck to Ryans since another shop could not resolve the severe mis fire problem it had. After a thorough diagnosis they implemented a great game plan and communicated in a awesome manner. Not only did they fix the trouble codes there diagnostic picked up.5 archived fault codes were fixed before they became an issue. The truck runs like it is new. Awesome 5 star service. By the way many shops have regular Ase mechanics where Ryans mechanics are all Ase master mechanics. For the folks not familiar with Ase verses an Ase master mechanic is the master mechanics love what they do and apply with quality always being number one. Bottom line they are awesome. If you meet Ray the manager you know by talking with him you are in great hands. Choose Ryans over a dealership. Keep in mind you pay for what you get. Cheaper than a dealership. Coming from a 38 year aircraft mechanic and supervisor. Hope it helps. read more

We've taken our vehicles here twice and both times service and work have been top notch. Ray takes the time to explain every single detail for any work performed. I had taken a vehicle of mine to Fairfield Subaru for a recall and was told I needed to replace a coil as well. Took it to Ryan's for a second opinion and Ray not only told me that there wasn't a coil problem but there were also no historical fault codes for this "issue". Ryan's charges a LOT. Probably the most in Fairfield, and maybe the most in all of Solano County. Their work is good, but at their prices, I'd like their work to be stellar. Here's what I've found: 1) The work they do tends to seem great at first, but problems arise. My husband had belt problems. We paid $250+ for the fix. We have belt problems again. Not as bad as before, and it took three months for the problems to come back...but come on. I had a problem with a window crank. They fixed the crank--but now my door rattles, when it didn't before. If I ask them to fix *that* they'll charge me. 2) I called ahead of time re: the window problem. They said, "Bring it on in, we can help you right away." I was there in 9 minutes. They got the car into the shop 60 minutes later, telling me that they should be finished with it soon. In another 90 minutes there was no word. The front desk guy made a call about my car (the only one of it's type in the shop) that I could hear, as he was right in front of me, but didn't tell *me* what was going on. I finally asked him to tell me what was going on. He got huffy with me for grilling him, "Well, how long do you think it might be?". I got annoyed, because they made it seem like it would be an easy in-and-out. It wasn't. It turned out that they didn't have the parts and would have to wait for them to come in. I said I'd bring my car back once they had the parts...unfortunately, I couldn't take my car because they had taken the door apart. 3) They do not offer rides, no they do not. Not even to a rental place down the street. They don't offer a "rental service" arranging for a rental car. I understand that a regular old mechnic shop doesn't do this...by Ryan's charges luxury prices, and offers Wal-Mart Customer Service. 4) I paid over $600 for my window crank. And the door rattles. Did I get a thank you? No. Did they move the car that was blocking mine out of the way? No. I asked them if they would run a diagnostic to see what other work my car needed. Did they do that? No. Who do I blame this on? The guy who wrote up my order, who was the liaison. With some customer service training (or a new employee) Ryan's would have a lot more repeat customers. Me? I'm going elsewhere. I can get the same service at a cheaper rate. Lesson learned? Just because a mechanic has ads on TV and a big, jazzy neon sign across the front of the place doesn't make them a great mechanic...just an expensive one. read more

As a somewhat new resident to the area, when I had car problems, I made an appointment at Ryan's. I chose them because I had seen their ads on TV, and every time I drove past the shop, it always looked clean and busy. Inside the shop their walls are covered in awards, so I figured this place had to be good. I was extremely disappointed that even with an appointment, I sat in the waiting room for over three hours before I got an estimate. The estimate itself sounded very high, and I chose to get a second opinion. The second place did the work for less than half of that estimate. I wish I could give them 0 star if I can. I came to change my headlight bulbs, which is very easy. The counter guy told me that They NEED to take of my car bumper......stupid words I ever heard in my life. I Had to show him my car to prove that I was right. And he admitted that we didn't have too..but He will charge me 100usd for changing the bulbs with his super rude attitude ...Ok I left even though I waited 30mins before I could talk to this guy...I went to Specific Honda 0.5miles from this place and Andy changed those for me WITHOUT charge...so DONT waste your money and time to go to this place...Horrible experience!!! All I needed was to have the "door open" warning lamps to come off and I already told him that the back door connection is the problem. He still told me that there is a $120 electrical diagnosis fee and atop of that says that I'll be charged more if they take of the car panels plus he have me come on Monday at 0800 and atop of that he said to kill my batteries before I drop it off.
