What was supposed to be a romantic dinner in St. Joe turned into the worst dining experience we've ever had. As long time customers we decided to sit out on the rooftop to overlook Lake Michigan. We asked for an outdoor table and told there were none available. We asked for the one closest to the windows but were told that it was reserved, even though when we called it was "we don't take reservations". We were seated and waited nearly 20 minutes for a waitress. They were walking by but not even saying "hello" or "I'll be there in a minute" - (as a former waiter, a sign of very poor training). I finally went to the bar to order drinks and on the way mentioned to the hostess that we still had not seen a server. She said one should coming there any minute now, and as we watched she passed the table twice - again no indication that a customer was sitting there. By that time 2 tables opened up outside. I took the drinks to the table and then asked the hostess to seat us outside since tables had opened. She informed us that once we have placed a drink or food order we could not be moved. I pointed out that there was nobody waiting or in line, so why couldn't we just move to where we originally requested. She had the manager come over to explain that it is policy not to move customers once they are seated. I told her if we had been told this beforehand, or that we had the option to wait for an outside table, it would be different. But since there was obviously nobody else in line or waiting why not let us move. She refused and agreed with me, upon my asking, that the restaurant policy takes precedence over customer satisfaction. She explained it would be chaos if everyone wanted to move outside when tables became available. I said I understood fully, but in this case there was absolutely no compelling reason not to make an exception given the circumstances - nobody else waiting for it, plus it was the same waitress we had covering both tables. Still "No, we simply refuse to let customers move under any circumstances." We had our drinks, and had our appetizers boxed so that we could leave asap and go somewhere else for dinner. Before we departed I took this picture of the outside table - still empty and nobody waiting for it. The one that was "reserved" was also still empty. To add insult to injury, we found out downstairs that a different waiter, Alex, had actually seen that there was an open table outside and asked if his customers still wanted to be outside and took them there. So much for "restaurant policy". I guess it really depends on who you talk to, a sign of a very unprofessional staff. We dine out quite a bit, both here and in Sarasota, and of all the wonderful places we go, RyeBelles is by far the least customer friendly place we have ever been. What a shame - Stick to your "policy over customers" stance no matter what, and we'll stick to our policy "let's go where there is good food, good service, and a nice dining experience". Unfortunately that means we are never going back to RyeBelles. read more

October 2021 - We found this rooftop restaurant and bar by accident. We were there on a busy Friday evening. The high prices were expected but the food portions were too small to be acceptable. The menu is very limited. We had a drink while waiting for a table and everyone was nice to us. I had the Octoberfest beer and it was tasty. We refused the table offered on the opposite side of the marina view. We were given the proper table upon request. I am not sure why we were offered a substandard view first. My daughter had the calamari appetizer for dinner. I had the Shrimp Scampi with pasta. The dinner came with a small mixed greens salad. The food was excellent but the portions were small. The only negative issue was the number of gnats coming from the bar area. The longer we were there the more we began to swat them. Once seated the service was very good. read more

This is the place for Fine dining in St. Joe! The scallops are incredibly DELICIOUS. Wow. I savored every bite, so worth the price. Kid friendly ~ high chairs and kids menu (not sure if it's listed online). Great upstairs rooftop deck, you can eat and watch the sunset over the lake, on the other side of the rooftop is a bar area that has live music. We came for dinner inside and stayed until closing up on the rooftop! The band was lovely and all the staff were so kind and helpful. Will definitely come again! read more

I ate at RyeBelles a week ago and I am STILL thinking about how good my food was. I ordered the mediterranean pizza (on gluten free crust) and I ate every. single. bite.! I was pretty hungry, but I didn't need to eat the entire pizza. It was just THAT good! Their pizzas are stone fired, which adds such good flavor. The mediterranean pizza was topped with fire roasted tomatoes and artichokes, spinach, feta and mozzarella cheese. These are individual pizzas and are a very generous size. I would say it could be split by two people depending on hunger levels/if you order appetizers. I also ordered a lavender lemonade (non-alcoholic) to drink. I wasn't wanting any alcohol, but thought a fresh lemonade with lavender flavor sounded really good, and it was! It's not technically listed on the menu, but I also recommend this drink! We sat on the upper deck with a partial view of the Lake and had a great breeze. The ambiance is the best thing about this restaurant. I had the Lake perch dinner which consisted of 6 small lightly fried filets, a baked. Potato, and a mixed vegetable for $30. It all tasted fine, but the fish portion was quite small for the money. My friend had the beet salad which appeared large, but she wasn't a fan of all the onions on top. She's a vegetarian, and there seemed to be limited options, but a pasta dish or so. Again, I think you're paying for the view here. Plus, there's a lot of stairs to get to the upper deck, but I did see an elevator which would be helpful for some. The waitress was friendly, good service. I don't think we will be running back, but overall it was fine, nothing too special though! read more

After the storm, it was hard to find a place that was still open. We were seated right away after ascending into RyeBelle's. We chose the restaurant as apposed to the rooftop bar. They are completely different vibes. The downstairs is more upscale and stuffy and the upstairs is more relaxed and free. The service is ok, nothing that wowed me. She forgot my drink order so I had to remind her, oh well. The salad came out quickly and was presented nicely. I enjoyed the plentitude of beets, the grilled onion, goat cheese and the pumpkin seeds. The raspberry vinaigrette paired well with all the ingredients. When asked if they had bread, she said she'd check and came back with a few warm rolls. Unfortunately they were not fresh and pretty hard. My entree came looking beautiful. The scallops were a little on the salty side for me and maybe slightly over done. I thought they were more chewy than tender. On the other side veggies and baked potato were prepared perfectly. So much flavor and crispiness on the seasonal veggies. My moms lake perch was excellent as well. Nice ending to a hectic start to our evening. read more

RyeBelles We (couple) dined on their rooftop during a beautiful August evening with sunshine and a strong breeze off Lake Michigan. They seated us immediately. Virus precautions of the staff and the patrons was good. The drinks (Manhattan, French Gimlet & wine) are pricey but tasty. The Artichoke Spinach dip was delicious and the Ceviche tasty--they substituted the corn and bread with all veggies, at our request. We split the entrees Brussels Lead Salad and the Lake Superior Whitefish--both very good. The background music was enjoyable (no live band tonight) and not too soft or loud. We recommend the place without reservation. For the adventurous soul, check out the Brussel Leaf Salad. Four stars is very good and my rating for em. To get higher will take better fare or same fare at lower price as they are pricey. read more

Don't eat at Ryebelle's unless you want to get sick...seriously. Some friends and I were spending a girls weekend on the shores of Lake Michigan and decided to come here for dinner. The wait was estimated to be about 45 minutes... An hour and 15 minutes later we were seated...it was a bit too late to be eating dinner at this point, but oh well. A couple of the ladies ordered a few different appetizers for the table, a shrimp, salmon, and chicken wing appetizer respectively. I thought the shrimp appetizer tasted a bit off but didn't think much of it. Also, the cider I ordered was expired as of November 2018... And I dined here June 2019. Sadly, the next day we had to leave our mini vacation, and I stopped in Stevensville at my favorite place for breakfast. Before my meal even arrived, I suddenly felt unwell, and proceeded to get physically ill, i. e. regurgitating, in the bathroom there. After not feeling well for five days or so, eating only bland foods, I spoke with some of the other girls on the trip. Many of them also had issues the day after we ate at RyeBelles. My husband, kids and I travel to St. Joseph, Michigan once or twice a summer. RyeBelle's is usually on the list of places we eat at. We specifically go for the outdoor seating area view. You can see the beach and water from the outdoor seating area. We saw the beautiful upgrades for seating outside when we stopped in yesterday. Anytime we have eaten at RyeBelle's, we have had good service; friendly staff, food delivered on time and fresh. It is pricey but you get what you pay for and our food has always been delicious. Only wish is that you still allowed for the chicken basket from the lunch menu for kids. Even if it is during the dinner time hours since you open later at 4p.m. M-Thurs., I wish the option for the kids was made available for the earlier dinner hours. We used to really enjoy the burgers but those are on the lunch menu. We would of eaten at RyeBelles on our trip yesterday but no chicken baskets for the kids or the burgers. We did not want to eat heavy at 4p and order from the dinner menu. Maybe make those available from 4p-5p? Just an option to please all customers. Still, we will be back. It was always worth the trip. We realize the prices before we even go in. I believe the menu with prices is listed at the bottom of the stairs before anyone even ventures up to the restaurant. There is also an elevator next to that area for anyone that needs it. I believe the menu with prices are on the door or next to it outside. Parking is available either to pay at the beach or down the block for free and different areas throughout St. Joseph from what we have found. It is a clean restaurant and the bathrooms are always very clean. I think those are important things too. Cabana's next door has the most delicious cake batter icecream offered in either vegan or regular icecream. Very delicious for dessert. read more

The BEST food I've ever had. We came in town for vacation with my family and saw this place had come up several times online when looking for a place to eat. It had good reviews and a beautiful rooftop restaurant so we decided to go. We had excellent 10/10 service and very attentive waitress. The menu had a lot of unique dishes and it was hard to even pick just one! The starters were large portions and our entree was phenomenal. It had so much flavor and came out very quick. The atmosphere was really nice overlooking the water. We are making an extra trip just to go back before we leave. I would suggest this to anyone! read more

Had the Belle chicken with mashed potatoes and rainbow carrots. My meal was fantastic. I also really enjoyed the specialty cocktail Smoke and Honey. My husband had the Walleye and was shocked how many bones were still in the fish. The vibe on the main level is warm and cozy. The enclosed rooftop could be fun in the summer but I would NOT recommend it for the winter. Visited on a cold off season Saturday afternoon. Handicap elevator which fit my wife's wheelchair and 2 others in our party. Great view of the lake. Our server Alex did a great job serving us. Bbq ribs were great. Chicken Parm was good, angel hair pasta was better than the spaghetti most places serve. My wife had the Caesar salad which was huge, but she said it was A bit dry and the dressing had a rather strong vinegar taste. My wife and I Stopped in St Joseph on the way back to St Louis, we were hungry and looking for somewhere to eat when we saw all of the diners on the rooftop and said "I want to go up there!" The view of the lake was not disappointing, and neither was the food. We both enjoyed the lake perch, it was crispy on the outside, moist and tender on the inside, just like it should be. I didn't get a pizza but the ones I saw come out looked like wood fired deliciousness. This was our first trip exploring this part of Michigan, and we will definitely be back. read more

Six stars!!! We haven't been since before the upstairs remodel and it looks absolutely wonderful. The rooftop area is so nice and offers a great view of the lake with big open doors and windows. There's 21+ spot upstairs as well with a very cute rooftop terrace bar. Food is AMAZING, with great portions, definitely makes the price worth it. My boyfriend and I shared a margherita pizza, band bang shrimp and spinach dip and could barely finish half! Our server was great - attentive & kind and offered his honest opinions on the food! Definitely no complaints here, I'd say it's a must if you're in the downtown area and looking for a nice outdoor spot to eat. read more

My husband and I made a quick trip to St. Joseph and decided to try RyeBelles for dinner. We had a short wait but were seated in the terrace are. It had lovely view since it was on the rooftop and came with a nice atmosphere and a great breeze. Our server, Alex, was very knowledgeable regarding the menu. He ran us through the menu options that were not on the menu and answered all our questions. I ordered the Parmesan crusted whitefish and my husband got the fillet cooked medium rare. We came here for a mid afternoon lunch/early dinner. The rooftop seating was perfect and just what we were looking for with a gorgeous view! That's really all this had. Great rooftop on the Lake side and on street side. Both are comfortable but one has a better view. They had a wait but got lucky and were able to get bar seats when a couple left. Bartender was pretty attentive despite being busy. I had a couple beers and my wife had a couple glasses of wine which were decent pours. We shared the tuna tartare app and the shrimp basket. The tuna was pretty solid for a small town tourist area. It was marinated, had the typical slaw and wontons but a tasty wasabi aioli. The chunks were a little larger than I prefer but still good quality. The shrimp were nicely crisp but not overcooked. We used the wasabi aioli to dip them in as well as some cocktail sauce. All in all a good experience and we will return for a great view. read more

Our last dinner in Michigan after a fun couple of days. Ryebelles was okay, nothing over the top, but satisfying nonetheless. The atmosphere inside was probably the most upscale we'd come across during our trip. There is also a rooftop section of tables that gets pretty busy, although at the time we were there (it's been a few months), the rooftop was closed. For food, we had the Firecracker shrimp appetizer. It was very good and flavorful, although some of the shrimp was lukewarm. I ended up getting the Mediterranean pasta with pomodoro sauce and it was good. A proper pomodoro which was nice! Hubby got the cowboy ribeye and he said it was cooked perfectly, which is always a crapshoot at restaurants. Standard green beans and shoestring fries rounded out the meal; basic but still okay. Dessert was chocolate cake and it was stinkin' good! Overall, restaurant isn't quite as fancy as expected, but we still enjoyed our food and experience there just fine. We'd go back and try more things if the opportunity every comes our way again. read more
