There is seating as well as a couple of tables in the back. If you have a big group or are arriving at a particularly busy time of day, expect to wait for a bit. I love lots of things in this world. But when it comes to food there are two ingredients that make me feel blissfully happy- authentic vintage charm and fresh flavors. I am a true believer that combining both creates a type of magic that exists at S&P. My dad was an aspiring singer/actor who also was an original masked wrestler. He supported himself as a cab driver throughout the 50s. By the time I was born he told me he'd eaten at so many great joints in the city that he knew where to go for what; he said he could get a feel for a place just by the facade of the building and the 'vibe' he got (I'm sure he didn't say 'vibe' back then, tho). He was telling the truth. It was a talent that made me listen any time he'd come to visit and he'd take me out to eat. The crappiest and dilapidated old places were some of the best. Upon entering any establishment he'd always judge the place by the coffee first. Later in his life his biggest complaint was that NY had lost its edge by erasing those old joints. He wasn't wrong about that either. I wish he were alive today for me to take him to S&P. He'd feel like he walked back into his past and found a nice place to haunt, and I'd be right there with him having a bowl of matzoh soup and turkey Reuben. We'd probably split the fries. BF & I discovered this place by chance one afternoon and we absolutely loved the food. Their egg sandy is a tad greasy but so delish. Their onion ringe are 10/10 some of the best I've ever had!!! And def get the fresh coke they make it right in front of you and I loved how light & refreshing it was! Came in here to go to the bathroom. The waitress answered warmly, the bathroom was clean, so I decided to have a bite. I try to judge places by simple dishes. Pastrami on rye with mustard. Came with a pickle on the side. The bread was outstanding, without being a show off. A great texture and fine flavor. The pastrami was also perfect. Not too lean but not greasy. Cut in thick soft slices. The amount of the pastrami was perfect. But it's more than just a sandwich. The counter and the people who work it create an incredible calm vibe. S&P may never be know if their pancakes, because they aren't visually notable, I.e Instagram worthy, nor are they exotic flavors. But there is a less common ingredient in them, which makes them not just notable, but outstanding. Surely they will end up in conversations and on lists with the likes of cafe Luluc. As far as I am concerned, top 3 in the almost 20 years I have been in New York City, and maybe the best pancakes I have ever had. They are made with sour cream; I imagine that is why they have both a tartness and a custardy quality. Probably more eggs too. Not soufflé like, like Japanese pancakes. Better. And sweet. I usually go for more savory pancakes and even like to put a little salt on if that taste isn't there, so these pancakes were not what I usually love. Therefore, I think they're a must try for anyone who enjoys plain pancakes. I mean plain! I didn't put a drop of syrup and had them hold the extra butter. These pancakes were perfect as they were served. The service wasn't, and I had to ask for silverware and water. But the guy behind the counter was great and told me about the sour cream. Staff was all friendly. Place was cool too. Eating at the counter was fun, but the back of the restaurant felt kind of historic and in a way was beautiful. Make sure to get a peek. A delicious pastrami here! Came to check this place out after my friend discovered it on Tiktok. I was craving pastrami and was thinking of going to Katz, but we decided to try here instead. We got a pastrami reuben and it was the last one they had (apparently they didn't receive their shipment last night or something) even though it was only 11am on a Sunday. The reuben was delicious! Very solid sandwich shop that offers a variety of other things like matzo ball soup, breakfast items, and pastries. I thought the reuben had a great balance / ratio of sauerkraut, pastrami, and cheese. I can't help but compare it to Katz though, which has much much more pastrami in their sandwiches. S&P however is at a much lower price point, I think we paid about $19 to share a pastrami reuben. One sandwich shared amongst the 2 of us was perfect to get us full. We stopped by S&P for a weekday lunch. The place is super crowded during lunch hours. Best chance to sit in the bar. Their menu has lots of sandwiches. I tried the pastrami sandwich with liver. It was not what I was expecting. Pastrami pieces were thick, not thin and shredded. I was thinking the liver would be in cubes, but it was actually smashed paste. Overall I didn't like it much. I used to love going to Eisenberg's with my grandpa when I was young for the egg creams, and I am so glad that S & P has truly kept it to the same very basics that made this place a classic in the first place. The tuna melt is definitely by far the best I've ever had anywhere ever. Truly. The Reuben has the perfect juxtaposition of smoky pastrami with the coolness of the crisp yet creamy coleslaw and savory cheese on perfectly toasted rye = perfection. You have to get an egg cream and keep stirring and if you enjoy rugelach, do not hesitate to get it because you're too full, seriously. We came in over the weekend & were disappointed. We got seated in the front. The guy seating me was really kind & at first it seemed like a fun place. We got menus/water & the person in black took our order. We got the Tuna Melt & Ruebens(which were excellent) & ordered drinks. After about 10m we got our food but not our drinks. I came here on a Saturday at 11am when it was 10 degrees outside and was able to comfortably grab one of the counter seats. I decided to order the lil' Shonda and split pea soup. The lil' Shonda was incredible, check out the pic. My lovely bride and I stopped in mid-morning for a late breakfast on a Tuesday in late December. We sat on stools at the counter and ordered the matzo ball soup for a starter.
