Today I had the misfortune of dealing with Michael who was behind the deli counter at this Safeway. With some difficulty I got the attention of a man behind the counter (who turned out to be "Michael.") The chain features a black pepper steak, cut in small pieces with beans, spices etc. and I asked Michael for a pint of this dish. Answer: "I don't know what a pint is." Baffled, I saw pint containers stacked on a shelf and pointed them out. Michael filled one and moved to hand it to me when I asked for a lid. Answer: "we have no lids." I explained I'd be driving some distance and I needed a lid to keep the food from spilling. Was there any other container that could be used? Michael found a flat container and filled it from the pint he had already filled--but it was overfilled and the top would not fit securely. When I pointed this out, Michael became surley and said: "I did what you wanted!" The staff at this location is great but the customers suck. On Friday, I tried to get in line for the express lane but I was told by a huge hippy dude that the line started behind him. I asked which line he was in as there are also self checkouts. He told me he was in line for both. Seriously. There were four other men behind him and I didn't want any drama so I just got in line even though I couldn't use the self check because I was purchasing wine. This chick in blue scrubs walks up and gets into the express lane. She is obnoxiously loud on her cell phone. The dudes say nothing about her cutting in line so...I do. This chick loses it and becomes even more obnoxious. She starts yelling at me, yelling into her phone, and making a scene. I tried to explain to her what the hippy dude said to me but she just keeps making a scene. Not a single person did anything about her behavior. I turned to the hippy guy and asked him to tell her what he told me. The jerk didn't say a word and none of the men spoke up. She's screaming, calling me names, yet no one does a thing. Management should have been called and the situation should have been handled by them. This store has the rudest, low class, people I have ever seen. First time using drive up and go and it was a complete disaster. Waiting in my car calling 3x, no one picks up. So guess what I had to do! Walk inside and stand in line at customer service. It's pretty unbelievably inconvenient. First and last time I guess! Never ever EVER again! Target's drive up is ultra efficient, this is a nightmare Update: I finally got my order and 2 items in my order were completely wrong! And when I called and inquired; they said they were out of what I ordered and are obligated to sub, they won't just exclude it from the order. This is absolute insanity. Terrible service. I don't usually shop at Safeway for this reason. I bought two items of which I opened one and it tasted weird so I noticed it was a week away from expiration so I just brought back the other which was a later date but mostly because I've had similar experiences before and was upset. I waited at customer service for 15 minutes 4 employees walked by didn't say a word finally a cashier called someone to come over and 10 minutes go by and nothing. Someone was sitting behind the glass on the phone and a sign says they are open another hour. Then I had to wait in a super long line. This was the the last straw for me. 4 new self checkout machines are here, bad times for the grocery checker's union! But most customers warmed up to self-checkout pretty quick here. Typical Safeway with typical layout, including Starbuck's and Well's Fargo concesssions, Deli, Produce, Wines, Flowers, Pharmacy, etc, everything in place where you would expect. Don't come here at 8:30am on a weekday morning, they are short handed. I heard them page to have someone help a fireman at the flower stand for 15 minutes straight. I don't think he was ever helped. Hope none of the checker's house ever catced fire! 15 minutes might pass and there house maybe fully engulfed! Remember when Lucky's used to have "3's a crowd" slogan, where they would open up a new checkstand? Not here! When I came in the morning, there was 1 check stand open and 12 people waiting in line. I would have used the self-checkout, but I had a lot of fruits and veggies. Not so clearcut how to self-check those! The new Glacier water dispensing machines are all the way in the back. Doesn't make sense to me, what with those 5 gallon jugs you need to fill and carry. (Only $0.33/gallon, and no throw away plastic water bottles! This Safeway is much nicer than my regular Safeway in downtown Martinez. They have a larger floral section and a bigger selection of things in general. It just seems much nicer than the one I usually go to. Also, all of their produce looked really good. Even the organic stuff looked good. You know how organic stuff usually has that sickly look, all of their stuff looked good. They must be busy and have a good turn over rate for produce. Overall I enjoy shopping here, I like their floral department the best. read more

This store is a mess! I walked in yesterday evening with my 11 year old. There was a woman being accused of shop lifting and it was a disaster! Store employees were all not working and gathered around watching the show. She was allowed to yell and scream all obscenities as loud as she wanted with my child around. When she eventually stormed off, again employees were running around laughing and not working. The Starbucks employee didn't even acknowledge us wanting to order a drink because she was very busy. We stood there and when eventually got her attention realized she also doesn't care. There was no store manager present yesterday which maybe explained to some extent why it was a disaster. The first part of my review will regard the terrible service I received from a woman working at the sandwich bar. The second part will show the excellent level of customer service provided by the management. It's Friday 8:15 in the morning, and traffic is light so I figured I have enough time for a BOMB Safeway breakfast burrito. Still worth the price at 4$. I approach the woman working the sandwich bar and asked for a breakfast burrito. Her robotic responses and lack of eye contact begin... "Sausage or Bacon" "white or yellow egg" "What sauce" I was polite in my responses, yes please, thank you. all that. Because that is just how you speak to people. As my burrito was in the "oven" she started getting agitated with the long line that was forming. I seen her ask another co-worker for help and get increasingly frustrated. When my food was finished and the co-worker was coming around to assist at the register, this woman tossed my food on the counter and walked away. Not so much as a word to me. I proceeded to look at her and say 'I would say thank you but you're pretty rude'. I grabbed my burrito and felt it was just barely warm. At this point I am starting to get frustrated with how this woman was treating me. I asked the girl at the register to heat my burrito longer, than instantly decided against it. I tossed the burrito back on the counter towards the woman with the attitude. I let them know that this food wasn't worth the terrible service. I walked out...... Hungry and pretty damn upset.... I was livid..... Mostly upset at myself for letting this person bother me so much. I can usually just shrug off feelings like this, but I just couldn't this time. UPDATE: Upon leaving Safeway I called to speak to a manager. please know from any of my previous reviews, I have never called to ask for a manager to complain before. But I didn't want the next person to encounter this woman and go through what I just had. I spoke to Matthew ( A supervisor at the store) who was very attentive and listened to my upset rant. He was very kind!! My goal was not to get some freebie or to get this woman in trouble or fired. I just wanted someone to reiterate her job description to her so this situation could be avoided in the future. Matthew was gracious enough to offer a service recovery gesture to me. Which I accepted and appreciate very much. He was able to turn a terrible experience into a pleasant one. All it took was someone who actually cares about their job. Thank you Matthew. You are a great manager! This location is super convenient, right off the freeway and on my way to work. But I don't think I could come back to this Safeway because if I see that woman again I don't think I could be nice, and I surely don't want her touching anything I would want to eat. I came here once and I'm sure I'll never come back here again. The parking lot is decently sized but when I came, there were tons of cars just wandering around and obviously no one has came to get them. This Safeway is pretty small compared to the other one's I have been to. I walk in and try to find what I'm looking for, which was just lighter fluid and some chips (having a bbq at my house that day). I went through the self check out and while I was scanning my items, this lady just rudely starts putting her items on the little table section where you can leave some things there, I just don't like that. After I was done, she asked me how to use self check out, really? If you don't know how to use it, don't even bother especially if there's a line behind you. Ugh. Anyways, the people who come to this one seem rushy and rude. I'd make the trip just to go to another Safeway. read more

When I'm over at Gayle's and we go grocery shopping together, we're either here or at the Lucky's near Downtown Pleasant Hill. It also depends what we're looking for. Lucky's has better produce, fresh meat, and household sundries. Yet, we like the wine, some of the frozen food selection and cheese selection here better. Plus, it's kind of fun to run your Club Card at the last minute during checkout and see how much the total price dropped. However, lately this pattern has become less distinct as Safeway is moving more to an everyday low price model. This Safeway is in a convenient location and parking is ample. Gayle and I have also walked here. The store is also located within a larger shopping strip which features the Plaza Cafe and a few other eating establishments and a Starbucks. They also sell the daily WSJ, SF Chronicle, and the NY Times. The checkers are nice enough, but they don't know me (or in one case sing) like the good folks at the Albany Safeway. read more

This Safeway has alot of products past their expiration date. Please check everything you buy here for your safety. I have also seen Safeway employees take shopping carts and put them back in the sterilized stack without actually spraying disinfectant and wiping the carts. It seems the employees do not care or may be not treated well by management. You will see a complete opposite Safeway the Virginia Hills Shopping Center on Alhambra Avenue. Items were well stocked and typically not expired, and carts are cleaned by an employee who stands by the cart. I enjoy shopping at this store! I know the majority of people working there and we always have great conversations; the food is always very fresh and they bring in new items weekly. Within the last few weeks I've noticed that the produce has been changed to show a more fancy and "artistic" flavor. What caught my eye was the pepper display...it's great!! Visited the deli again today. I ordered the $12 meal deal. There were 8 pieces of chicken left in the pan and it was almost 5:00. I asked her when there would be fresh chicken and she shook her head and said sorry I don't understand. I then asked was I getting thighs and drumsticks and she replied yes. When I got home what I got was the driest chicken breast pieces that were so thin they were inedible! It was like the hardest chicken jerky you could imagine. I even cut the roof of my mouth with it! This is the second time I have tried the chicken from this Safeway and I should have known better. It was almost as bad the last time I got it. I've always had bad service at this deli, even when ordering sandwiches. I work within walking distance which is why I keep coming back. But not any more! In general, I find that this Safeway location is clean and organized. Sometimes the staff even seem to get a little artistic and creative with their displays of various products, makes for a little bit of fun and distraction during what can be a boring and often costly process (shopping). There's lots of other stuff in the area that a person may want to do, from grabbing a bite to entertainment to banking, etc. so if you are a multi-tasker, this store may fit your game plan for the day of multi-tasking. Thank you Safeway! I needed a cake on a moments notice for a special event boy did they come through. I got a half sheet chocolate cake that was maybe the best chocolate cake I have tasted. They also personalized the cake for me, dropping what they were doing and got the job done. I teased the baker by telling him he had spelled congratulations wrong and the look disbelief on his face as he read what he wrote really told me that he did indeed care! He didn't spell It wrong, I was teasing him and thankfully he laughed and shook my hand. Great guy, wish I would have gotten his name to show my appreciation to corporate but I was in a hurry and didn't think about it.... I've come to the conclusion that customer service in ALL Safeway Delicatessens is horrible. I don't know what you're doing wrong Safeway - maybe you're not paying them enough or maybe overworking them. Your Deli employees don't want to help at the counter, especially the sandwich counter. When you ask for help they are rude and act "put off." Additionally their sandwich making skills leave a lot to be desired. You need to do better, Safeway, or you will lose a lifelong customer. read more

Called to ask few questions regarding returning wine, as I purchased the same one accidentally. Don't know the female employee who answered the phone was, but they sure do make Safeway look bad. Customer service was horrible, kept laughing at my question, kept arguing with me and even hung up on me. Law states one can return alcohol if purchased accidentally, which was my case. You suppose to provide customer service, not argue with the customers. I work for UCLA, which they would never tolerate such poor customer service. This Safeway has always huge lines. Why they don't hire more workers or ask customers to pack their own bags. Cashier scans all food and then he has to go and pack the food into bags. I will try to keep this review brief and to the point. I selected a cake for my son's birthday. They did not have the cake topper design in stock. They were able to order it for me (which was an ordeal but that is another story). I was told the cake topper was in and the order would be completed. Two days before the party I called again to confirm the cake topper was there, and the order would be ready for my son's party. I spoke to the cake decorator (maybe Crystal?) who said she had my order, had the topper and all would be ready on time Saturday. My son and husband went 20 min before the party started to pick up the cake. It was not there. No evidence of it. No cake topper, no copy of the order. Nothing. Panicked I had one of the manager's cell number because she had helped me with the ordering of the cake topper snafu. I called her immediately. She (Amber) told me that she had quit her job due to the total incompetency of the store. Nobody in the bakery could reach the cake baker to see what happened to the cake. It was deeply disappointing to my 7 year old. They did give us the equivalent cakes to equal the full sheet cakes we ordered but they were not at all what we wanted. We had to take what was available at the time. Will NEVER go here again. read more

I have two options if I want to go to Safeway. I chose this location or the one on Treat. I chose this store because the traffic is way less then dealing with everyone coming off of the freeway from Treat. This store is always very clean, organized and well staffed. My only obvious issue is that they charge more then other supermarkets for produce and meats. In all fairness you can always buy the Safeway brand but you still will not get a huge price break but anything helps. I love their dessert selections. If you don't want a huge cake or multiple servings they do have a huge variety of single serve options. I went in here on my Birthday and upon checking out the Cashier commented on the dessert I was purchasing and says " Is that Lunch "? First of all, why are you insinuating that this is ALL I am having for lunch. To make matters worse, he had bandages on all of his fingertips. I think he may have some type of hand injury or infection. I have no idea, I am getting creeped out just thinking about it. And as I was entering payment information he opens up another bandage to put on. Sir, I really do not need any blood/puss coming out from any where since you are dealing with food and there is a high chance of contamination. This can face some serious health/safety issues. My fiancé and I went to this Safeway to purchase some food items for our way to the beach. As we were in line, we were craving a Starbucks drink in line and we're planning on going to the one near Contra Consta Blvd. We heard an announcement for the Ultra Caramel Frappuccino and the way the barista described it made me crave it even more. After purchasing our food items, we went straight to the Starbucks here and ordered our drinks. Deborah and Cecilia, I believe her name was, were awesome and they made our drinks and ordering with no problem. But major cuddos to Deborah because she gave us some different options about the Frappuccino since my fiancé only drinks decaf and is lactose intolerant. They made it with no problem when we forgot to ask for Coconut milk. They even had samples prepared for customers to try! As a Starbucks Assistant Manager, coming in for a few things, my fiancé and I both left with excellent service, positive vibes, and delicious drinks, because of both of these awesome baristas. Speaking on the deli counter only. My first time shopping here and I needed to pick up sandwiches from the deli for myself and my family. It was 2 p.m. after the lunch hour rush. The blonde lady at the deli counter listed off the types of breads available much faster than I am used to so I asked for sourdough. Her response: "I just told you we don't have sourdough!" (Um ok.... sorry. No need for the attitude.) She then proceeds to make the sandwiches I order and literally slams each ingredient down on the bread, with no care, no precision, like she is annoyed at the fact that I'm in her presence. The entire time I want to ask her "what is your deal?" I politely asked her to remove the bacon off one sandwich as soon as she placed it on the chicken, and she scoffs at my request (I understand what the menu item said, but these sandwiches are ultimately made-to-order). Her co-worker who is making sandwiches for another customer shares the same disgruntled attitude and is also rude to her patron. My deli-person is almost ready to ring me up and I say, "I'll be right back, I'm going to get a loaf of bread." She gives me an eye-roll. I come home to find that the sandwich I ordered for myself has a piece of paper product in between the bread slices. **Safeway, other than the fact that people need food for basic survival, based on your employee customer satisfaction, this place should be out of business. This last order I got spoiled cheese (out of date), stale bread, many items unavailable, and a pudding Cake that was baked 6 days before they delivered it to me. No more-changing stores. At the entrance of Safeway there was a special plastered all over the single slice cakes $1. At self checkout paying for my shopping one cake rang up $1 and the other $2.99. The clerk there was so sweet to adjust the price and on my Safeway app there was a $1 off for any bakery item purchase of $1. She credited me that coupon also without question. Made me feel like a special customer at Safeway. Safeway is my go to shopping supermarket. read more
