Sage Bistro is a great Asian fusion cafe. They mostly serve traditional American fare with Asian twists. They're menu is pricier than most places, but it's reflected in the ingredients. One of the best dishes on their menu is the duck breast which I ordered. It was seared nicely and still a nice pink medium rare. The currant sauce helps accentuate the sweetness of the fowl. Unfortunately they was a building level of too much saltiness for me. But it was still absolutely delicious. Server was nice and friendly. The place was on the empty side. Love this place! Excellent service - the waitress was friendly and considerate. We went here a little late, maybe almost an hour before closing, but they didn't rush us. We ordered the salmon salad, jambalaya, and duck to share. They were all delicious. The salmon was perfectly cooked and there was a huge portion. The star of the dinner was the duck. It's more like a 4 stars to me, but 5 stars because I support this establishment. Asian fusion places are popping up more and more around the 626 and they can be pretty hit or miss. This one is pretty good with great service from who I assume is the owner. She's really nice and just has a genuineness about her that makes you feel like you're family (I say this even though she thought I was Filipino and thought my brother was Mexican haha). Gotta appreciate an owner who isn't afraid to do the dirty work with a smile and has genuine friendliness. The food is essentially Chinese/Vietnamese meets Italian. The dishes are on the pricier side, but considering the quality it features compared to neighbors that serve cafeteria versions of similar dishes, the price can be justified. Everything I've had here was either solid to pretty good. The dishes I liked most so far here were the beef short rib and the salmon. The decor is nice and new looking. It's clean too, most importantly. If you're looking for some Asian fusion food and don't mind spending a little more for better quality, definitely give Sage Bistro a look. read more

2.5 Star I've always wanted to try Sage Bistro because honestly you cannot find a great Italian Asian fusion in 626. Finally it was my friend's birthday and we decided to check this place out. We have group of 3 and ordered Braised Beef Ribs, Roasted Duck Breast and Stuffed Chicken Breast as well as Deviled Eggs. Deviled eggs was delicious, creamy and flavorful. It came with 6 pcs which is perfect for party of 3 (we got 2 each), definitely a great appetizer to start with and share. Braised beef ribs was also delicious. The meat was super tender and sauce was super hearty. It comes with rice which is perfect to pair with their sauce. The portion was also large so make sure to share! Duck breast and stuffed chicken were on the other hand, disappointing. They were both over cooked. Chicken was so hard to chew and I barely taste much feta cheese in the stuffing. They drizzle some sweet sauce on top of the chicken so the whole flavor of chicken was kind of taken away from the sweetness of the sauce. I would avoid ordering this again. Duck breast was also disappointing. I had really good duck breast before and I enjoyed the tenderness and fattiness of the duck pretty much. However maybe the chef was not in great condition that day since I saw so many people talking about their duck breast, mine was pretty hard and dry. I was not impressed at all. Their pairing vegetables were delicious and flavorful. I def had mixed feeling after dining here as I enjoyed their rib dish but not their chicken and duck dish. Generally we love this restaurant's food. We decided to order a Thanksgiving meal from Sage this year. We chose them over veggie Grill. However, I could hardly believe this food was from the same restaurant. Every item was flavorless. The Mac n Cheese was dry, I don't know how to describe the so- called stuffing. It had frozen carrots and sour cranberries in it-yuck! The mash potatoes were not exactly mashed and the skin was left on! The gravy tasted like water and the seitan -well was like breaded cardboard!! Also the salt shaker got lost. They need new recipes. I hope they will learn from this review. As much as my husband and I love their Chicken Farfalle, last night would most likely be the last time we go there. The customer service here is a turn off. First few times we were here, we were served by the same older lady. Thought that was just a coincidence. Last night, she was there again. And at 7:30pm on a Saturday night we were the only table in the whole restaurant. It was awkward when we felt all her negative energy were directed toward us. But what did we do wrong? We were quiet and well behaved. Probably because we only ordered one entree to share (since the portion is always too big and we didn't want to pack it home)? though we also ordered two soups on the side. She seemed unhappy with the amount we ordered. We heard a big sigh when she was inputting our order into the computer. It's a shame because food here is not bad. But some people are just not meant for customer service. My husband and I frequent restaurants in SGV so we can tolerate minimal customer service. But when it gets negative, there's no reason for us to spend our money there anymore. We believe that lady might be the reason why we were the only customers there on the prime hour of a Saturday night. read more

It pains me to write this review but I have to write it because I feel the prices are truly unjustified, given its ambience and location. Let's start with the positives, shall we? Service: Excellent and attentive service by a female server (possibly owner?). It wasn't crowded on a Saturday night and it seemed like she was the only wait staff. Despite this, she did a great job, waiting on a big party like ours. Food: Decent deviled eggs. My pesto shrimp pasta was incredibly bland. It wasn't bad but it wasn't great. The person who sat across from me complained the texture of his duck was very tough. The person who sat next to me complained that his salmon was dry. Another person in our dinner party said the $30 steak tasted...old. Ambience: Clean and quaint but definitely casual and not decor which would be justified in charging $16+ per entrees? I don't think so esp if they serve all drinks in mason jars which I associate with more casual dining establishments. Value: If this place charged $12-$15 per entree, this would have been a possibly 3 star and I would understand why there would be so many positive reviews for this restaurant. I was floored by how much they charged for each entree. Seriously? You're located in Alhambra, not West LA, and you expect people to pay this much while there is so many other restaurants on this street? If you offer a casual atmosphere yet charge premium prices for mediocre dishes, then I do not consider your restaurant to be a good value in my book. If you offer an atmosphere on par with the prices, then I wouldn't be grumbling so much. This is not to say I'm a bargain betty either. I've paid $300+ for omakase and would do it again in a heart beat. I felt that meal was well worth it, given the quality of food and ambience. I seldom make reviews, but this place deserves it. This hole in the wall is a cuisine gem and anyone willing to spend $12-25 for an entree should definitely invest their money here. We came on a late afternoon and the place was almost empty, so the service was quite attentive (but I'm sure it makes no difference even on busier volumes). I had the duck breast ($19) and it was perfect in texture and taste. The mashed potatoes was creamy and even the roasted mixed vegetables that came with it as a side was perfect and flavorful (probably due to the oil it was cooked in). My boyfriend had some sort of chicken pasta ($15) and any other restaurant could've easily charged $20+ for that delicious dish because that entree was so savory and packed with flavor. Came here yesterday with my date. I like that they show soy-free options abbreviated with each plate. They also show gluten-free and...some other one that escapes my head at the moment. We were sat immediately, greeted fast, given appropriate amount of time to order. We ordered fried artichoke hearts as an appetizer. My entree was the eggplant arrabiata with "meatballs" added. I wish the meatballs were a bit rougher in texture to match authentic meatballs but it was good regardless. A nice mild sauce paired well with the breaded eggplant and pasta. Artichoke hearts are also a solid appetizer that I can see myself reordering many times. I will definitely want to come back here. For desert maybe too. :) read more

i came here w/ my family on a saturday night and the place was pretty empty. There was only one server and i also speculate thats the owner too. the menu is not very extensive... we ordered a salmon mango salad, jambalaya, the bowtie pasta , the spicy linguini. The food came out a little slow but the jambalaya took the longest. When it came out .. it was pipping hot.. almost burnt hot . as a matter of fact..it did have a slight burnt taste to it. my husband really attempted to eat it but it just bad. when we told the server. She didnt even apologize, however she did offer to remake it... but we just said we would cancel the order completely since it took them a long time to prepare the first time. honestly i dont know how this place can still be in business. the service is clearly not there and the food is nothing special. read more

I was shocked they charged me $4 more for subbing white rice for mashed potatoes in the braised beef rib dish which is $33. We were greeted by Wanda, a very cheery & friendly lady whom happens to be the Manager/Owner. She's very personable & I don't mind that at all. There's street parking, nearby parking lot as well as parking in the rear. They are located next to Alondra Wings North of Main St. & Fifth St. We ordered the house special Braised Short Ribs. We also ordered Jambalaya, Spaghetti & Meatballs, Pan Seared Salmon, & Duck Breast. The Braised Short Ribs was tender, moist, flavorful, & falling off the bone. You can taste a hint of red wine & butter. It's placed on top of a mound of rice & roasted veggies. The short ribs is a fairly large (made me think of the Flintstones) piece which was awesome! The duck breast was cooked well, veggies had nice texture. The Jambalaya had a little kick, rice was al dente, & you can taste & smell the bell peppers (I'm not a fan of bell peppers) in the mixture. Spaghetti & Meatballs was plentiful. The Meatballs were pretty big. The salmon appeared to be seared well, veggies looked bright (I didn't taste it since I'm allergic). They offer quite a variety of menu options, wine selections, & a limited dessert option. The Guava Tea is pretty good. Mango iced tea was flavorful. The Iced Lemon Tea is refillable, comes unsweetened (simple syrup on the side). I would definitely come back. Hello my Yelpies, First thing first, I can't believe I've lived in Alhambra for 5 years and this is the first time I came to try this place. I've got to say this is what I call a-hole-in-the-wall. Parking here isn't too bad. They have a back way where you can park with limited spaces, usually, it's not too busy so you don't have to worry too much about finding a space. I came here because I had a major craving for spaghetti and meatballs. I didn't want to go too far from home so decided to yelp something and came across this place. I saw their beautiful plating and how delicious the food looked where I have to give this place a shot. I couldn't believe how delicious and flavourful it was. The meatballs were not hard, it had the perfect texture, flavor and the most important. The spaghetti was cooked to perfection. I couldn't be happier with my food. I am so happy that I have such a bomb Italian restaurant near me. I will definitely pick Sage Bistro over Charlie's Trio. Their service was top notch. The owner she made me feel so welcome. But the shrimp had so much flavor. And the potatoes were super creamy. They didn't allow me to add more veggies and less carbs since the vegetables were pre packaged. I was looking for a place for lunch on mother's day and found this hidden gem. Even though it was Sunday at about 1 pm, there were only 3 occupied tables. (To be honest I hesitated after seeing how very little customers they had on mother's day, but decided to go in anyways. The ambience & decor were simple but cozy! (just a suggestion, if they target for the couples, they can make it more romantic or dim the light a little darker or put candle light on the table) However, i'm not sure that it can survive in that neighborhood honestly coz it was pretty quiet on Sunday night and $19 for the duck breast dish, people may want to go to S. Pasadena... i'm not sure about the location for this kind of business but i think it's worth the price coz they provided good quality food! Every year around this time my wife and I like to get to get together with close friends for our annual Christmas dinner. Having looked for a new place to experience within a neutral area (easy for all of us to get to), our wives discovered Sage Bistro and we couldn't be more please with the entire experience. Such a good find! Located right next to Alondra's Hot Wings on Main St. We came here on Friday night around 7pm; plenty of seats so we were seated immediately. CHICKEN FARFALLE PASTA: Sauteed chicken with pancetta, onions, sundried tomatoes, and marsala sauce. I wish the pasta came with a bit more sauce (felt slightly on the dry side), but it was still a great dish overall. It reminded me a bit of alfredo/carbonara. BRAISED BEEF RIBS: beef short ribs on a bed of rice, peppers, and mushrooms. Definitely get this. The beef is very tender and fall-off-the-bone, and the sauce that accompanied it complements the tenderness. For those of you that know Korean food, it's quite similar to galbijjim. I'd definitely order this again. Overall, a great place in Alhambra to eat. I'll try the roasted duck breast next time when I come back. Look and Food: 2.5/5 stars. There is NO lunch menu. I ordered the Chicken farfalle pasta from the one and only dinner menu. Nice big plate presentation. Pasta, chicken, red onion, sun dried tomato, brown mushroom, capers , Alfredo sauce, parmesan cheese. Just a few small pieces nugget size of Chicken that was dried and over cooked. It had a hint of unclean chicken taste. Maybe two cut up mushroom, plus a sprinkle of sundries tomato and a few capers. For the price, the toppings amount were very sparse. Just 50% more would have been plentiful and make a much more satisfactory meal. Sauce was creamy enough but completely flavorless. I had to ask for salt and pepper ... And I rarely do that if ever. This is one plate that clearly didn't deserve the higher rating this place seems to have at the moment. Atmosphere: 4/5 stars. Nicely upscale decor bistro type. TV in the corner top wall. Parking in rear alley. Service: 3.5/5 stars. Very attentive however failed to check up on me after food was delivered to table. I had to look for waitress to get the salt and pepper.
