Best Pho restaurant in San Diego by far! I have been to a billion Pho joints (including in Vietnam) and would consider myself as a semi-pho connoisseur. I admit that I had some doubts about Pho Saigon Star because most San Diego Pho restaurants are just alright, but this place is pretty good!!! The first thing that I always do when I get my bowl of soup is to sample the broth, and it was pretty darn good! Very rich beef flavor with a hint of star anise! I was also impressed with the different cuts of meats, it was tender and not chewy at all. The greens and bean sprouts looked like they were freshly picked and washed! Saigon star is family ran and owned. The folks there are very nice and have a huge diverse group of regulars. The restaurant is pretty clean compared to the other Vietnamese restaurants I have been to. The decor is pretty nice, but a little tacky. I gave this place 4 stars because there are some better Pho places out there. But if Pho is something that you don't eat often, you will probably think this place is worthy of 5 stars. If you don't mind poor service, dirty surroundings, 30 minutes of waiting, and a 70 miles of driving; there is a place in Santa Ana called Pho Kimmy that has the best Pho I have ever tasted (my mom even admitted that it was better than hers). We stopped by here for lunch after visiting the Mission San Diego de Alcala. This is a find. The place is in a strip mall off the main road, but was nicely decor'd and the food was very good. We had the egg rolls, chicken sandwich, chicken curry with french bread, and the various rice noodles with egg rolls, bbq pork, and shrimp. All yummy! Ate at this place after the Chargers game. This is definitely a Vietnamese restaurant made for Westerner's who do not know the difference between good Vietnamese food and mediocre Vietnamese food. I call this my fancy place to go for pho. Wonderfully tender beef and plenty of fresh veggies here. The restaurant itself has a pleasant low lighting. Always quiet setting. Decent pricing, on the 'higher' side but WELL worth it. Great Pho! Friendly staff. I've been getting my food to go since COVID started and they do a good job at keeping all the ingredients separated. Some pho places don't pack their to go meals very well and the heat from the broth can ruin the meat that it comes with. Not the case here! The staff is accommodating and they remember faces. As always the staff was absolutely awesome, absolutely awesome. We went for a birthday lunch and everybody loved what they ordered and everybody shared what they ordered. The waiter recommend salt and pepper shrimp, it was beyond good. I really enjoy the food always have a feeling I always will. I would recommend them highly to anyone that likes Vietnamese food and if they try it they may find an other set of flavors they can enjoy. We started going here when Pho Xpress across the street raised their prices, and I'm so glad we did. Saigon Star generally has better food and more reasonable prices. Try the salt and pepper chicken wings over the salt and pepper calamari. The pho and banh mi are decent, but not like Phuong Trang or Pho Cow Cali. If you like coconut, I highly recommend their coconut smoothie. Nowhere else can compare. Sometimes I come here just for the smoothie. read more

4.5 stars We have been looking for a new Ph place for a while now and found this gem. We have been here twice so far and both times were fantastic. We usually start off with spring rolls , they are huge and very fresh ! We have also tried the salt and pepper shrimp and chicken , I liked the shrimp best it was crispy and very flavorful . The Ph is very good too , not to oily or dark and you can either get a small or large which I like since I can't eat too much . Service is always fast and efficient . One of my favorite go to place for pho with extra vegetables! I usually go for rare and well done steak with tendon and tripe and extra veggies. My bowl is always packed with goodness! I ordered food from this place via Amazon Prime Now but was pleasantly surprised to learn that it is located in Allied Gardens, where my family will be moving in a week! The menu is kind of strange in that it's a concatenation of Vietnamese and American Chinese. I ordered the pork wontons and salt and pepper chicken wings as apps, and Orange Chicken, Beef and Broccoli, and their combination fried rice. Everything was really good, fresh, and well packed for delivery. The wontons had a lot of flavor on their own but were accompanied by a nice sweet dipping sauce that seemed to be homemade rather than from a jar. The salt and pepper wings were simply but perfectly seasoned and were so irresistibly crunchy that I couldn't stop eating them until they were gone. Orange Chicken is a guilty pleasure that I probably indulge in too often, so I just had to get it. It was good enough - I asked them to make it spicy but it was still a tad on the sweet side and could have used more spice or savory to balance it out. The Beef and Broccoli was good - all fresh cut vegetables that were still al dente, and good, tender beef. I was not wild about the fried rice because it had some unexpected sweet component that I couldn't quite place. It had "Chinese sausage" so maybe that was it. All in all, Saigon Star was good and I'm sure it will become a regular weekly tradition for my family when we move. read more

Don't expect to be wowed by customer service. That's definitely not what they would be known for. But expect to be impressed by the food. Try the fish spring rolls. They're pretty fantastic, because it has a moist steamed white fish, garlic, and crunchy egg roll wrapper inside. Their salmon vermicelli noodle soup was delicious, with fish balls and salmon and was a great option when craving soup, but wanting something else other than traditional pho. Their Bon bu hue had tender pieces of beef shank. The broth could've used more spice, but this was hearty and tasty. The steamed white fish was light and flavorful and a great healthy dish. The strawberry lemonade was a bit too sweet, but once you added water several times, it helped to reduce the concentration. It's described as freshly squeezed lemonade but I'm not too sure about that. They have a pretty extensive menu which I like when dining at Vietnamese restaurants. I like options and trying out different things. The interior is very clean and nicely decorated. Parking is easy and plentiful. read more

Just moved to the area and exploring the local dining spots. We were in the mood for something light and fresh so decided to try Saigon Star. I will not be back. Here's why. - You will read other reviews stating this is a clean restaurant. It is not. The table was clean but the floor, walls, dusty fake bamboo were not. It's the kind of place where you'd imagine the kitchen is questionable. - It was the filthiest most awkward menu I have ever touched. The paper menu pages and corners are smeared and soiled with others greasy fingers. Because it is thick paper simply folded in half, you have to touch it to hold it open to look at. - The menu was short yet confusing. An attempt at both Vietnamese and Chinese food. Which is odd because if I wanted Chinese food I'd simply go to the place next door. - The service was awkward. A woman gave us menus and offered to take our order, we needed a few minutes. Immediately after an old man asked us for our order. We ordered with the woman. The old man brings the wrong order to our table and then they argued. - Most important, the food was not good. All could be forgiven if the food was amazing. Our last hope was dashed when we received greasy fried rice that had an odd sweet taste, and drippy gelatinous lemon chicken. I took one taste and moved onto my vegetarian Pho which was mediocre. We also ordered crispy spring rolls that were over filled and mushy inside. After reading another review showing a bolt a customer found inside a roll, I lost my appetite. - Water was brought to the table in a nice pitcher. It smelled like dirty tap water. Delicious food and amazing service. So glad I found my new pho spot - and, very happy I can enjoy my meal safely indoors. Staff have posted appropriate COVID-19 signage throughout and a bottle of hand sanitizer remains at each table. We enjoyed spring rolls, pho, and a combination plate here. Love this place. I get pho to-go pretty often from here and it's some of the best in town. Portions are awesome and food's always ready within 10 minutes, and everyone's always so polite. Saigon star has been my hangover cure for 3 years. The delicious pho never failed to fill my heart, soul and stomach. I know they had a change in ownership but I couldn't tell the difference between the to go pho. I haven't eaten there since ownership change but the employees are nice when we pick up the to go. To go experience : Recently, My fiancee and I ordered through Amazon and the pho arrived quickly. They gave us plenty of soup, noodle, vegetables and meat. Maybe, enough people complained on yelp. Yay we matter!! PS: If you don't know by now, you should know. Always ask for uncooked noodle when you order togo. You can cook the noodle with boiled water at home until it reaches the consistency you want. This way you can always eat the noodle later if you can't finish everthing. Which is what we did for our Hangover on the second day. #wernotpartyanimal Only complain is they didn't give us that much sriracha, no worries, we always have sriracha in the house. Fun story: One time we decided to order from Ca Dao on Santee because it was cheaper. Never again! The broth was really lacking compared to Saigon Star. read more
