The girl that switches out the table paper needs to be given a new position because she lacks professionalism but she was fast at her duty. Sal's Place is a genuinely special restaurant, a warm, vibrant place with top notch service and fantastic Italian food. My girlfriends took me for my 40th birthday, and we had a wonderful dinner, an idyllic live laugh love moms' night out with lots of pasta and red wine. Parking was a pain in the ass, as there was no valet and street parking in the neighborhood was heavily restricted. We all found metered parking that we had to duck out and refresh after two hours because the meters ran until midnight. Highly recommend not driving here, for parking and also for drinking reasons. The restaurant is cool and idiosyncratic enough that it got a write-up in the New York Times, with the headline "A Scrappy Pop-Up Restaurant Shuttles From Coast to Coast." It apparently started in Provincetown, Massachussetts, and wandered over to West Hollywood in 2023, opening for six months out of the year when Cape Cod slows down for the winter. Reservations are exclusively made by telephone, and payment is cash only. These quirks are minimally annoying and 100% in keeping with the intimate, small business vibe of the restaurant. The atmosphere was enchanting, cozy and welcoming, with a bit of underground supper club energy. I kind of like that you can't find this place on Resy. Service was excellent. I didn't get our waiter's name, but it really felt like he was hosting us. It helped that he gave us meatballs on the house and topped off our wine when we were running low, full pours that he left off our bill. The wine was lovely, a Chianti that went well with everything. The food was delicious, starting with the complimentary focaccia, served with seasoned olive oil for dipping. The bread proved useful with our appetizers, both the shrimp scampi and our free meatballs. The shrimp scampi was snappy and flavorful, swimming in a rich sauce with garlic, lemon, and capers, an extra slice of bread on the side. The meatballs were just right, savory and tender, made with veal, pork, and beef in a pomodoro sauce. We ordered two of the three salads on the menu and I'd highly recommend them both. The endive citrus was bright and zesty, with mixed greens, pistachio, fennel, feta, and orange. Sal's caesar was bold and satisfying, with romaine, shaved cauliflower, panko, and pecorino. We passed on the entrees in favor of getting three pastas, each of them essential to our dinner. The lobster alla vodka was an ideal seafood pasta, al dente linguine with lobster, peas, and basil in a great vodka sauce. I felt similarly about the shrimp puttanesca, linguine with plump shrimp, roasted red peppers, anchovy, and olive. The winner, though, was the pappardelle with oxtail ragu, which was one of the night's specials. A transcendent meat sauce pasta, with supple pappardelle, a mouthwatering ragu, and plenty of thin-shaved salty cheese on top. If this is available, order it. Heck, order two, just to be safe. We shared tiramisu for dessert, and it came with a candle for my birthday. It was a stellar tiramisu, and felt like the right way to end a bountiful Italian meal. I know my husband would enjoy Sal's Place and am already scheming to go back. I want to get another dinner in before it heads east for the summer. read more

It's just really good. To me, LA is lacking in higher-end Italian places that still remain homey-feeling and non-pretentious... Sal's is just that, though. This cash only romantic eatery where reservations are highly recommended that can only be made over the phone is exactly what you envision when you hear the phrase "charming little romantic restaurant". However, it is only open during the winter. Metered street parking is the parking situation. 4.5 stars that I will round up given the over and top waiter service and hospitality. Food is solid as it was very enjoy for a group that was a pescatarian that doesn't eat shellfish. Prices are as expected. Portions are very generous to the food that has a home cooked feel. The cacio e pepe had a pesto feel but was addicting. The vodka pasta where the lobster was replaced with veggies was also great. Loved the Cesar. The best tiramisu I have had. The flavors of the pasta were FINE. This clam pasta was overrun with salty capers. I need to douse it in cheese to make it feel edible. It's not worth it. I've never been to a restaurant with this level of service . Everyone is so kind and attentive. I will say they do things a little old school. Only phone reservations or walk in . Cash payment only . Written receipts. I would not recommended walking in as they are packed . I had to still wait a little even with a reservation but it was worth the wait . The Ceasar salad was my favorite . The rigatoni with pesto and the filet mignon were also delicious . Portions are generous . Homemade Tiramisu is a must. The bar area is a little small but the overall ambiance is romantic and gives you an east coast feel . read more

Sal's is a fad that's 14 minutes and 59 seconds are up. The food is base and tasteless. The staff, rude and crude to the bone. Also, they should let customers know it is cash only, which is never a problem, but they have no ATM, so that is just another pain in the tucchus. Buyer beware. ! read more

Sal's Place was amazing and I can't wait to go back!! Sadly it's only open here 6 months out of the year so you have to plan your visits accordingly! It's in the old Piccolino spot, which is very pretty and cozy . The service is superb which is hit and miss in LA. And the food! Crazy good. Good price points - everything is $20, $40 or $60 dollars with very generous portions. The menu is limited but it doesn't matter - everything is phenomenal!! We had - Caesar salad, meatballs, shrimp scampi, sausage pasta, lobster pasta, oxtail pasta (a special), roast chicken, tiramisu and cheesecake. The standouts were the lobster pasta and chicken. But it was all super tasty! If I had to pick one weak dish it would be the meatballs. They weren't super tender and had a smoky flavor which was sort of out of place for the dish IMO. The sauce was delish though! My only notes are - the wine and cocktail list are a little lacking in diversity as well as the dessert menu. But I will be going back again and again!! read more

I rarely write a review, but I definitely thought this time. I just had to share my experience. I do consider myself a foodie and know what's good and what's not . I've been wanting to go and try it for a long time and I went last night with my daughter-in-law who was in from out of town and I thought it's a good time to try it . Was not disappointed at all, and you know that can happen even if people leave good reviews. The minute you walk in the owner welcomes you . . There's nothing pretentious about the restaurant or the people working on the contrary . When a restaurant is packed from the time they open until I left you know that they're doing something right. We had the shrimp appetizer , Cesar salad rigatoni and chicken and everything was excellent . Came here on a Thursday night and the place was popping! They've taken over the old Il Picollino place on Robertson. Even with it being so busy the service was excellent. We ordered the meatballs and the caesar salad to share amongst four. They kindly separated the salad into four plates for us and even gave us an extra meatball to accommodate, as it usually comes with three. Our waters were always filled and our food and drinks came out rather quickly. The food was divine! Especially the special of the day which was an oxtail pappardelle. I had the Orecchiette with sausage, which was delicious and was a good portion. The meatballs were so good we scooped up the sauce with their complimentary focaccia. This place is know for being the place to dine in Provincetown during the summer so it was great to hear of this pop up in LA. It's non-pretentious and cozy in the best way. It brings a bit of New England hospitality to LA which is nice. Rumor has it, it will be here until the end of spring. If you have the chance catch them before they're gone for the summer! read more

If I could give zero stars, I would. This place was honestly one of the worst dining experiences I've had in LA. The food was terrible--bland, overpriced, and just straight-up disappointing. I've had better meals at food trucks for a fraction of the price. Staff? Totally disengaged. We asked for recommendations and got some of the most half-hearted responses ever, like we were bothering them just by being there. They deck the place out with flowers and decor like it's some high-end spot, but it's all just for show. None of that effort went into the food or service. AND to top it off--it's CASH ONLY. In 2025?? Seriously? No heads-up, no signage until you're already at the register. Sketchy and inconvenient. Do yourself a favor and skip this place. Food and service was great. The place had a fun, happy, welcoming energy. Even though there were lots of people and the tables were all filled, we had plenty of attention from our server. He let us sample the wine to make sure we liked it before ordering, he suggested we share the main entree rather than ordering one for each of us (telling us it was large and he was right), he topped off our wine at no extra charge. He treated us like honored guests. It was so nice. We shared a salad and the lobster Vodka Pasta which was delicious, and since I had read other reviews about the Tiramisu, we shared that as well. I'm seeing 5 stars for this place...has EVERYONE lost their collective minds. Why...because they are here for a limited run??? People are spending way too much money to eat out these days...why waste it on THIS! Everything was 'mid'! Caesar was nothing special, tomato sauce for the meatballs had no depth of flavor, orrecchette pasta with sausage was uninventive and was over seasoned with pepper. The other pasta was overcooked...and there was no one in the restaurant yet so being too busy wasn't any excuse. Dessert options were tiramisu/cheesecake....really?!? Olive Garden has more interesting options. And in 2026...how do you NOT serve coffee!?! The waiters t-shirt was stained and he had limited understanding of service for a restaurant that charges this much. You don't put your finger in the bowl when putting it on the table nor do you hold the glassware from the top with your fingertips near the rim. People were well dressed for a nice night...and the person greeting people is wearing sweat pants. I mean c'mon! I don't blame the owners because they are getting away with this in Provincetown....I blame the people in this town who should know better but don't! Ask for more....at $40 for a bowl of pasta...we deserve better!!! read more

Restaurant "Dinner in the diner, nothing could be finer." Okay, so it wasn't a diner--but Sal's Place, a pop-up in West Hollywood, definitely fell into the finer category. We were greeted at the door by Shiobhan, the effortlessly charming, blond owner, who made us feel like old friends dropping by her new place. The restaurant, formerly the iconic Piccolino, instantly gave off those you're-in-the-right-place vibes. You could just tell it was going to be a good night. The four of us landed at a table that once seemed reserved for Hollywood royalty. The lighting was soft (not moody-dark), white gauzy curtains floated at the windows, and there was this subtle sparkle in the air--like something special was about to happen. Our waiter, friendly and clearly a pro, gave us the backstory: Sal's Place spent 40 years charming Provincetown, Massachusetts, and now splits its time--summers in P-town, winters in LA. Not a bad life. Cocktails arrived (excellent ones, by the way), and we dove into the short-and-sweet menu packed with craveable pastas, fresh fish, and a standout meat dish. Just my kind of lineup. Then came the surprise: juicy shrimp to share and crisp Caesar salads, delivered unannounced as a welcome gift. (Other restaurants, take note--this is how it's done.) My boyfriend & I stopped in this place late last night to split the lobster pasta. It was absolutely magical - the staff was warm & attentive, sat us next to each other at the booth, perfect for sitting next to each other and enjoying the charming, intimate atmosphere of the place. We were blown away by the service - they brought us focaccia, salads, and even a tiramisu. We weren't aware that it was cash only until the end of the meal, and before we even said anything we were told not to stress if we didn't know and that we could come back the next day to pay the bill. When we left, all the servers and staff said goodbye and we chatted with the owner. It's nice to see a spot in Los Angeles with a family vibe and a cozy, intimate, magical atmosphere. I am incredibly baffled by all the 5 star reviews saying this is the best Italian restaurant and that it is some people's favorite restaurant. First off, the place was really loud, which could have been fun if we didn't want to talk at the table. But more importantly, the food was not good at all. Started with the shrimp scampi which was the worst scampi we've ever had. Very underwhelming shrimp that seemed like they were boiled and placed in some basic garlic sauce instead of being properly sautéed. The Caesar salad and tuna crudo were fine, nothing special though. The Halibut was dry and overcooked. The orecchiette pasta with sausage was so bland- terrible sausage and it tasted like the pasta was dry with no flavor or sauce. We've had airplane food that was better. Service was fair- quite slow and inattentive. Wine list is a joke. They have 3- one white, one orange, and one red. The red was a $16 bottle that they charge $80 for! Ridiculous! And their corkage fee for bringing your own wine is $50 which is outrageous, one of the highest corkage fees in LA. Cocktail was good, hence the 1 star instead of 0. Save your cash (it's cash only btw which is weird) and go anywhere else! read more

Proprietress Siobhan Carew really has the place jumping. We went on a Tuesday and it was packed and noisy and full of life. I had an on point dirty martini to start that came with a full cocktail stick of olives! Food is hearty Italian mostly - that meatball could chase Indian Jones down a tunnel - with portions you can share. (Don't forget it's cash only.) This is a lowkey fancy Italian restaurant that places much thought into the customer experience. Beautiful semi-sheer curtains instead of walls, handwritten menus, servers who genuinely care, food that tantalizes the tastebuds, and a mellow ambiance that is full of life. Let me tell you: this fare was absolutely DIVINE! I was immediately sat down with a warm plate of toasted bread that was well-seasoned. The simple side of olive oil was surprisingly prominent and complimented the bread. The server offered me a non-alcoholic drink, with notes of pear and fennel, called Secret Garden since I can't drink (it was not on the menu); it had a floral, herbaceous, and citrusy taste. The lobster alla vodka has very generous portions of meat that includes crab. The sauce was creamy, slightly tangy, and bursting with flavor. Noodles were cooked to perfection. The tiramisu was light and fluffy, and a perfect way to end the meal. Only con is that it's cash only so come with a good amount. Summary: If you're looking for good food and good vibes, this is your place. It's perfect for a date night, girls night out, and "me date". They're only here until June so come soon! read more

I have been to Sal's Place twice now, and was lucky enough to been placed in George's section both times. Frankly, it should be renamed to George's Place because he is truly the most welcoming, friendly, and attentive server I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. We enjoyed the intimate and familiar ambiance while eating the most incredible linguine alle vongole I have ever had in Los Angeles. We didn't realize it was cash only, and the waiter simply said "yeah no worries, just come back and pay there is an atm up the street!" Wow the trust for us to leave and come back.
