Mexican Food in Maine? Absolutely! We found this amazing Mexican spot right in the middle of downtown Bar Harbor, and let me tell you the location couldn't be better! Families were walking by, live music was playing across the street, and people were sitting barefoot on the grass trying to stay grounded. Meanwhile, we were being spiritually guided by the smell of Mexican food coming from Salsa Verde Grill. It pulled us in like a tractor beam! We started with the fresh guacamole, blue corn chips, and their Christmas sauce a combination of red and green sauce. Oh man Christmas came early! That sauce was so good I almost asked for it in a cup with a straw. My wife ordered the steak burrito, and it was so big she couldn't finish it. Imagine that! I ordered the enchiladas topped with a fried egg, refried beans, and rice. Oh boy, I was stuffed but somehow kept eating like I was training for the Mexican Food Olympics. Our daughter ordered the same thing as Dad, but hers was smothered in that delicious holiday sauce. She couldn't finish hers either. My wife and daughter are a couple of wimps! Or maybe I'm just a big-backed roly-poly with no quit in me. The food was flavorful, the portions were generous, and the atmosphere was perfect. We absolutely recommend Salsa Verde Grill when visiting Bar Harbor. Come hungry, wear stretchy pants, and don't blame me when that Christmas sauce has you licking the plate. Bye-bye now! read more

This was a pleasantly decorated restaurant. I came here because they serve New Mexican food and that is hard to find outside of New Mexico. Being from New Mexico, I asked them if their green chile was really from Hatch and I was told that they order it from Hatch and roast it themselves. I ordered the enchiladas Christmas style, which is red and green chile. That is how I knew it had to be from New Mexico. I thought they were good, a little on the spicy side but the green chile was not prepared like what I was used to in New Mexico. Although it was good, it did not fulfill my green chile craving. At the beginning of the meal, they provide a tiny sample of their Sopapillas which did not disappoint. I was bummed because their portions were plentiful so I did not save room for the sopapillas. The rice and beans were good. We ordered chips and salsa because they do not provide it. We chose the medium salsa. (7.8/10) It was my first time having this type of bread and I thoroughly enjoyed it We ordered the carne asada tacos, the carnitas tacos, the sapodilla plate and the chicken taquitos plate to share. The carne asada and carnitas tacos were both delicious. The meat was well cooked and seasoned and the portions were filling (7.5/10). We got medium salsa on everything and be warned that the medium has a kick to it. The taquitos plate was standard and exactly what I would expect. The chicken inside was still moist, and the shell was crispy (7/10). The sapodilla plate had 2 big sapodillas and a generous portion of chicken, rice, and beans on it (8.5/10). Despite the large portions, the dishes tasted fresh and I didn't feel too heavy afterwards. The prices here are reasonable, the service is great, and the food is tasty. Quick breakdown: Good food saves it from a 1 star. You cannot order online, only if you call. The call is directly to an AI that is incredibly confusing to work with. It always frustrates me when a restaurant uses AI for their phone system. As someone who has worked in the restaurant industry, it is not difficult to have a host pick up the phone. The AI makes it feel impersonal and cold. -2 stars for me. Tacos size are small. We also got enchiladas, which were tasty and proportionally sized. -1 stars for me. Like I mentioned earlier, the food tastes great. And if you go there in person I'm sure your experience will be different than mine. When a restaurant claims to be inspired by the iconic Olvera Street in Los Angeles, it's important to get the details right, especially when it comes to the salsa. Unfortunately, the salsa we tried lacked flavor and was a bit too spicy for the taquitos. We ordered the taquitos plate, and I noticed a few areas for improvement. The romaine lettuce could be replaced with shredded lettuce for a more authentic touch, and the dish could benefit from more Mexican crema and cotija cheese. Additionally, the red onions and cilantro would be better if they were chopped more finely. Considering the portion sizes, I felt the pricing didn't quite match the experience. The inspired Los Angeles street tacos were decent, but again, the red onions and cilantro could use finer chopping for better flavor integration. As someone who hails from Los Angeles and cherishes the taquitos from Olvera Street, I was excited to try a restaurant that draws inspiration from that experience. While I appreciate the effort, I found it didn't quite meet my expectations. If you ever find yourself in Los Angeles, I highly recommend visiting Cielito Lindo, a beloved food stand known for its hand-rolled taquitos and delicious avocado sauce since 1934. Their sopapillas are excellent, just like my grandma used to make in New Mexico. It is very hard to find a place that offers sopapillas at all, and these were wonderful. Refried beans are ubiquitous in Mexican cuisine, served everywhere, but these people made the best beans I have ever had - and my Hispanic wife agrees! Bar Harbor is arguably one of the biggest tourist destinations of Maine. Thankfully I have a brother living in the area so can experience some of it especially during slower season. During our recent visit up this was the decision for dinner one night and it did not disappoint. We got lucky and grabbed the parking spot right in front. Everyone at the table had two margaritas with total trying 4 different kinds and they were all sooooooo good! The monthly margarita was unique with some sweet and spice along with a lollipop that came with it too. The chips and salsa were solid with the salsa being so more unique than most salsas are in color and flavor. Food menu is small but has enough for I would assume most people who stop in. My wife enjoyed their carnitas tacos while I enjoyed the carnitas enchiladas. My brother also got their sopaipillas with honey that was a delicious end of the meal. Service was pretty solid although slow at times. My brother informed me they recently took over the current spot they have and their last spot was extremely small. While I would not call it a large space it seems to be massive compared to what they had. So hopefully they can feed more patrons in the new location! If you are in the area and want Mexican style food I think this is the spot to check out! I look forward to returning at some point! read more

This was our first time here. Mexican (they are from New Mexico) can be a nice change from all the seafood options on MDI. They are located on Main Street in downtown Bar Harbor almost across from Blaze. So you'll need to do street parking or find one of the hidden pay lots. It was pretty packed but they have the nice text waiting system. Was told 45 min wait it ended up being 20 minutes. They have a nice bar area to wait or you could just walk around. Chips and salsa are complimentary if you request but we got the guacamole, very nice large size. Super friendly staff. We found out they are from New Mexico so one or 2 items she had said those were New Mexico specialities. Drinks were good, cheese enchiladas were awesome. Would definitely come back. They will have a covered outdoor deck for seating as well. read more

Avery the bartender was such a rude person to order with and then after I waited 27 minutes to get my burrito, some lady named Lisa camped and smacked his butt while I was trying to enjoy my food. It also happens to be the only Mexican food in the area, but do not be fooled- Salsa verde is a family-owned place that serves phenomenal New Mexican cuisine! It was packed when we arrived and we had to wait a bit, but it was worth it when I put the first chip with homemade salsa in my mouth. Wow, everything here is so fresh! My only complaint was that our service was lacking. Our food came out before our drinks and we had to ask the waitress for them, as well as water refills. Kind of annoying since it seemed like everyone around us was getting better service. Wither way, we devoured our food! The carne asada loaded sopapilla and carnitas enchiladas were superb!!! Also, do not skip the churros. I repeat, DO NOT SKIP THE CHURROS. They were warm, light, melt in your melt goodness. The calabacitas tacos were filled with squash, corn, tomatoes, red onion, green chili. They were flavorful, the vegetables were crunchy, and I enjoyed them. I ordered the medium salsa which was quite spicy. We were welcomed and seated as soon as we arrived and the service was prompt. As much as I enjoyed what I ordered and appreciated the menu being labeled with what is vegetarian, I felt like the vegetarian choices were pretty limited compared to other Mexican restaurants. Yelp says "many vegetarian options" which simply isn't true. The server said many things are not vegetarian because there is pork in the beans. The building itself is not much to look at on the outside and the inside has sort of dive bar vibes, which we didn't mind. It was, however, oppressively hot inside, possibly hotter than outside, and they either didn't have a/c or it wasn't working. The windows were open and there were fans blowing instead. This put a damper on our visit. We didn't order anything from the bar, although there were several appealing looking drinks on the menu. It appears from the other reviews that other people enjoyed Salsa Verde more than we did on this particular visit. read more

I was looking for quick takeout for dinner and this place was close to my hotel so I decided to give it a try. It says it's a New Mexico style restaurant from the sign. The place is small with not much seating. The server working the bar wasn't the friendliest but I want dining in so I won't let that affect my review. I ordered the carnitas sopaipillas. I was told it would take about 25 minutes for it to be ready so I left and came back. The place was packed when I came back around 7:30pm. The food was well packed and I was pleasantly surprised when I opened it. The serving size was pretty good for the price. First I'll start with the sopaipillas. I've never had them before but they were like pillowy fried dough (almost like a chalupa but not folded). The carnitas were tender with a little crisp to them. They definitely sautéed them more after shredding which added more flavor and texture. The refried brand were soft and creamy with a surprising amount of heat (spice) to them which I enjoyed. Lastly the rice was the perfect compliment to eat with everything. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the meal. I came in not expecting much from a New Mexican style restaurant all the way in Maine but it was way better than expected. I would definitely come back and dine in. Also the margaritas they were making looked legit with real limes instead of sour mix. read more

Stepping inside we were warmly greeted and seated right away. For dine in customers you can get complimentary Chips and Salsa. They have three levels of heat with the Salsa and I am here to assure you the one they say is hot truly is! We had the loaded Sopapilla with Beef, Enchiladas with Chicken and Christmas Sauce, and the Flautas and all items were uniformly excellent. Our Server was excellent and super friendly. Really good! This is a really cute restaurant. It's pretty small but there seemed like there was enough seating. It's filled with natural light and cute pillows. Service was good! They don't have many staff but I still got everything really quickly. Food was great! My sopapilla seemed super fresh. It was warm and fluffy. The carnitas were amazing. We recently visited Acadia and Bar Harbor. After a couple days of seafood it was time for a change. We decided on Salsa Verde Grill after getting a less than warm review of another restaurant in town from our Uber driver. I am so glad we did! The food at Salsa Verde Grill was positively the best thing I ate in Bar Harbor. We had chips and salsa as well as the grilled carne asada burrito and two types of street tacos - the Carnitas and Carne Asada. Warning - I like hot sauces - not burn your mouth hot, but hot... their medium was plenty hot for me. The mild was also very flavorful and definitely mild. Their margaritas were delicious and made perfectly. I will say, it's small. We were fortunate to walk in and have a table, but several other folks came later and had to wait. They are family owned and operated and it feels like you're eating with family.i would suggest, if it's crowded and you don't feel like waiting, getting a to go order and eating in the park. If you're in Bar Harbor, I'd definitely recommend giving Salsa Verde Grill a try. read more

Super awesome spot for Mexican food in Bar Harbor! We stopped by not really understanding what New Mexican food was, but were left impressed. They started us off with a complimentary and huge basket of chips and salsa. The chips were fresh and salted well, and the salsa was great. I got the sopaipillas plate with carne asada. Everything on the plate was just delicious; the meat was juicy and charred well and the sopaipillas were a good mop for everything. I do wish that they had given more of the spicy salsa on the carne asada, as I ran out of it after a few bites. The beans were also just ok. We then topped off with their churros, and these were also great. Piping hot and super tender. They're quite thick and not crispy at all, but the tenderness was really unique and we loved them. The service was slow and inattentive, with long waits even for basic requests. Seemed like they did not care to be there whatsoever. We went with great hope of good food and experience after a long day of hike. First it took over an hour of food to come at 9 PM in night. On asking our server, the other server Lisa responded rudely and said she doesnt know its a kitchen issue not theirs and no other response like let me check Now food comes after 1 hours . I am completely vegetarian and my enchilada has chicken, my son's burrito which was supposed to be no cheese has loaded cheese, again no apologies and on asking for a manager. The server Lisa comes out who was initially y rude and brings another enchilada claiming its veggie in 2 min which initially took 1 hours. On asking how it can be ready so soon and if it was really vegetarian her response again is that it kitchen fault and swap and goes on to say that she is not vegetarian so does not understand.
