Was introduced to this gem in Portland Oregon where the line to get a scoop usually extends around the block. Come to this one right near Agritopia. Except for Friday and Saturday night, you can pretty much stroll in. The service behind the counter is inspired. One of the crew members pretty much hooks up with you when you get to head of the line and makes sure you get samples if you want, and scoops you up into a cup or cone, or to-go pint. The flavors are constantly changing. Today I went with an old favorite pear and blue cheese (sound weird? ..., it's delish) and ventured out safely into a second scoop of Marionberry Oatmeal Crumble. You just can't go wrong. Plenty of casual seating just outside front door along the sidewalk with good tunes being piped out to add to your happiness. I had the opportunity to try Salt & Straw for the first time and it did NOT disappoint! I had a friend gift us two pints, so I did not indulge in store and it was a little treat for later. I tried the Honey Lavender, which is a personal favorite of mine across ice cream shops and a more unique option, Pear & Bleu Cheese. I know neither of these flavors are most likely fan favorites, but they were both delightful. The Honey Lavender was PERFECTION, a strong lavender flavor, not soapylike some people may say but I also love floral flavors. The honey was the perfect amount of sweetness and I would get it again and again! The wild card, Pear & Bleu Cheese was quite lovely. I do not know if I would order it on a regular basis or crave it, but I am so glad I tried it and really truly is balanced. I am not sure I have the words to describe it, but still sweet and the pears and cheese pair very well together. I have had Salt and Straw ice cream before and have always stuck to the Double Fold Vanilla. Last night I decided to be brave and ordered a different flavor. We were asked if we wanted some samples and we did. We tried the following: Sea Salt Olive oil Strawberry honey w balsamic & pepper Birthday cake and blackberries I went with the birthday cake and it was good. After a few bites though, I found it to be too overwhelmingly sweet and could not keep eating it. My friend fell in love with the sea salt flavored one and said she would order it again in a heartbeat. My other friend ordered the olive oil and said that it was delicious. The worker that scooped up our ice cream was very friendly and had everything under control. After handing us our scoops, she directed us to the cashier. The cashier on the other hand did not look happy to be there... She wasn't friendly and had an irritated look on her face. I bought my puppies a pup cup and they were obsessed. We wanted to purchase hats but they had no pricing on them and we felt like the workers were too busy to ask. Overall, I will give it another week or so before I come back again. Inside, the décor is charming and quaint. The staff was very friendly despite the eager crowd, and even made a point of walking out from behind the counter to help get orders started. We tried a few samples and landed on some classic flavors like Salted, Malted, and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough - this one was my personal favorite. My kids got scoops of the Double Fold Vanilla and Chocolate Gooey Brownie. The names are fun right? Lactose and my daughter don't tolerate each other, so she went with the Freckled Mint Chocolate Chip, which is actually vegan. Good to keep that in mind! I liked most of the flavors and you can tell the quality level of the ingredients is high. My wife tried out one of the limited edition flavors - it had Peach in it, which was a bit too sweet for me, but she liked it. We heard about this place finally opened but let things calm down from the grand opening. We ordered a single for both the Cinnamon Snickerdoodle and the Coffee and Love Nuts. The staff were nice and friendly as well. We went outside to eat and the Cinnamon Snickerdoodle was good to me. the Coffee and Love Nuts was even better especially for the coffee flavor. While we were eating, a sandstorm went through the area sending everybody in a brief panic. Luckily, none of our ice cream blew away as we power walked to our car. What an adorable little ice cream shop and a great addition to Epicenter Agritopia! We visited the shop on a Tuesday afternoon after having lunch in the area. There was quite a line of individuals to get ice cream, but they moved it pretty quickly. This was my first time ever going to a Salt and Straw and I didn't really know what to expect, but I sure was delighted with their set up. They have some very unusual flavors, things that may not sound good in writing but we're very tasty. One thing that I love is that they use a real silverware for your tasting and cute little disposal shoots that you just slide the spoon into after you're done. Yes, the small things matter. I tasted a few of the ice creams with unique names, and I settled on a half/half scoop of Salted, Malted, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Coffee & Love Nuts. Wow they were amazing! The cookie dough tasted so fresh and like real genuine cookie dough, and the nuts in the coffee and love nuts or covered in chocolate and just delicious. Just one thing to note is that they only have outdoor seating. That is an important thing to note if you're coming to visit during the summer months in Arizona. I love the unique flavors of ice cream here and the texture and creaminess of ice cream flavors. They offer limited seasonal flavors that are just so different from other places. Luckily we can sample as many flavors as we want. They use sample metal spoons and then it's deposited into a spoon discard chute. That helps to prevent waste. There's always a friendly face to help you with your ice cream decisions. Everytime I've been here there has always been a consistent line. So there is plenty of staff to help customers out. More recently I've enjoyed the Thanksgiving mango pie flavor and then for the Christmas season i enjoyed the almond brittle with salted caramel ganache. I usually go the split single scoop because I can't just choose one flavor. You really have to make multiple visits here for the limited flavors. Otherwise you can't go wrong with some of the classic flavors like honey and lavender or just the vanilla bean. The only place to eat is outside. I wish they had more space indoors so they can have tables inside for hot summer days. read more

Finally got a tacolate!!! And i was pleasantly surprised. It came with two sauce packets, one mango and one wild berry. Both were good and i prefer the berry. But the taco is good without any sauce: the ice cream is sweet and creamy and not melting after a ten minute drive home. The taco shell stayed crispy and crunchy and the chocolate was the perfect addition. My only concern was the amount of packaging but it may be needed to keep the tacolate in good shape until it is enjoyed. Well done Salt and Straw!!! read more

A few of my friends who've tried Salt and Straw in other cities highly recommended this place to me, so I had to check it out once the hype of the grand opening died down a little to avoid the long lines. I absolutely love that they have such a variety of unique flavors that are so out of the box, that one wouldn't even think would work well together but somehow do. It was difficult for me to decide on which flavor to commit to getting a whole scoop of, but the friendly, kind, staff were very patient in answering all our questions while we took our time sampling a few of their flavors. We ended up going with two cups of the grilled peach white chocolate custard. My taste buds were pleasantly confused at first when trying this flavor out. It was a little tart in the beginning and then smoothly switched over to a sweet aftertaste. I will admit though, majority of their flavors are sweet to super sweet, so after a few samples, it got a bit overwhelming. The ambiance is casual but inviting.
