Quite disappointed, food was meh, service was great. The waiter was very kind in checking on dishes for me that we're gluten-free. Mains were something very different. My husbands medium rare stake was medium well to well, and his fries were very salty. However his side of mushrooms was superb. I ordered the lamb, it was nice, not great. The lamb was very fatty, not in a good way. The dish was over powered by the tomatoes. Due to a gluten intolerance I got the pomme purée in place of the pomme dauphine. The mash was NOT what a pomme purée should be. It was lumpy, very under seasoned. Not what I expected a pomme purée to be even from a Americanized French restaurant. Neither was worth the $30 a plate in regards to quality. The desserts were better, but we were disappointed the ice cream was not made in house but from a local shop. But from sebastian joe's which we love, so it was a pass. The pot de creme was very rich, smooth, and wonderful. The cream was over whipped and splitting, scrapped that off. The Macarons were such a huge disappointment, it ruined everything good about the meal. They were dry biscuits not even close to what a french macaron is, or even close to. I can't help myself. I'm drawn to all things vaguely French like a moth to a flame (but without the resultant fiery death, one hopes). After a wee wait, we were seated in a large, comfy booth perfectly placed for me to people watch and scope out our fellow diners (meme comme en France!). My mother and sister played along, reviewing the long menu and asking for my thoughts/translations where applicable. We went with a veggie sandwich, a croque madame, and a spinach crepe, all with fries, of course. Let me pause to tell you about the fries. These babies are hand-cut, skinny, and cooked to a perfect brown. They arrive at your table with a flourish in their own little silver dish. Delicious with "sauce americaine" (ketchup). This was the reason I couldn't wait for the arrival on Grand Ave. I like the decor better here. I was satisfied with the delicious french onion soup, and salad for lunch, and of course the baguette. Always room for the mini mousse. I once had the cream cheese and lox omelette for brunch, and enjoyed that. As in all french restaurants coq au vin (chicken in wine) is way over priced. Went in Monday night just for a fancy dessert. They had a $10 wine bottle menu so we got a bottle of riesling and I got the apple tart while my friend ordered the lava cake. We were served a small baguette with a creamy butter. The wine was pretty good for a cheaper house wine but my apple tart was a flavourless mush. It was just baked apples flayed on top of a pancake of flakey pastry. It definitely could have used more cinnamon and sugar and more of a pastry crust. The presentation also left a lot to be desired. However, my friend's lava cake was presented very well with a swirl of sauces and fresh raspberries and was really rich and delicious. After, I ordered a cappuccino and it was a good size and it came with a shortbread biscuit. My tart with a cappuccino was $16 after tip. The high price paired with the low flavour of the tart gave me a bad case of order remorse. read more

50th and France has changed over the years, and where once I went for Arby's and FroYo, now my parents (and me on occasion) go for they hybrid French-American experience that is Salut. I have enjoy dinner twice as well as lunch at the bar and the service and decor in both areas is exquisite. Their knowledge of wine is off the charts (not a pun) and the waiters/waitresses I've had always seemed to really enjoy themselves and what they were doing. The calamari here is top shelf, for sure, and while it isn't in my top three nationwide, I can't imagine a visit without ordering it. I think the one thing that would improve it is a different sauce to accompany, but then, that is a relatively small concern as the squid and breading are both prepared wonderfully and full of flavor. The peppered tuna steak sandwich was superb. The tuna is served seared and rare and was delicious and warm, despite the quick preparation. The wasabi mayo has a well-balanced kick, and the bread was fresh and warm. The sandwich itself is pretty large, too, which I didn't expect considering the filling. It's very possible that the Edina theater has since shut down, but if not, pair that with a dinner/drinks at Salut and you have yourself a wonderful date in the making. Absolutely the best food, atmosphere and service. You CAN NOT go wrong here! I have never been disappointed by Salut! Food is fresh and superb in quality. I feel the chefs love what they do. The bartenders and servers show that they enjoy the restaurant themselves. I could not say a bad word about this place if I tried. Wow - has this place gone down hill. When I'm in town, I usually enjoy eating here over the holidays ....but this visit was underwelming to say the least. I ordered a Cobb Salad that consisted of day old Iceberg Lettuce and leftover veggies and it was served with NO bread - for a french restaurant, I would think bread would be a staple on the table, but not this place!! And for $19, I would expect fresh lettuce and veggies in my Cobb Salad and a piece of bread. We ordered the Calamari, which was good, but only about 8 pieces of squid. The french fries consisted of a few long nice fries and the rest stubby dried bits of potato. I did enjoy the Opera Cake with fresh whipped cream. Adieus Salute Salute used to be on my list of favorites. I love the location, ambiance, and even the French music they pipe into the ladies restroom...but, for the past couple of years, every dining experience has been less satisfying. Salute offers "small plates"...a better description should be "a bite", "a taste" or "a sample". A recent order of the Crispy Brie was $5.00 and consisted of a cracker about the size of one saltine and a scant tablespoon of brie. Now, let's just say this up front - I went to dinner knowing I was going to dinner in Edina. I mustered up a clean pair of jeans and fixed my hair. It was pretty rough. In all honesty, I took a friend here and kind of warned her about the crowd that is sometimes there, but also said that it never bothers me. Seriously, who cares? We had a GREAT dinner. Wine? Mmmmm. We split an app and burger, which they were absolutely fine with (they even cut the burger in half for us). The escargot was cooked well and the burger was really good! But before we even got any of that, we had their baguette. Or should I say baguettes. Oh yes, the two of us split two of them. Basically we each had a whole one. The bread was so good, but the butter!! It was whipped with salt in it. Oh, heaven, I love salt. The burger and fries were just right. We had all intentions of ordering dessert, but our 2 loaves of bread had caught up with us (wonder how that happened). Well, as luck would have it, it was my friend's birthday, so our waiter brought us a red velvet cupcake! Woo hoo! Okay. I usually don't even like cake - for me, it's more of a vehicle to eat frosting. Oh. my. gosh. That red velvet cake was amazing and easily some of the best I've ever had, and my friend agreed. It was sooooo gooooooood. We walked out stuffed and skipped the bar afterwards. Too full! We both had a really good dinner and great service, so we definitely left happy! Stopped by for lunch after some serious window shopping throughout 50th and France. My friend ordered the French Onion Burger, while I got the lobster club sandwich. Ok, so the sandwich was delicious. That lobster club sandwich was the perfect lunch. Wonderfully light yet still satisfying. Downside: the chicken noodle soup. I wasn't really a fan. It was especially watery rather than chicken brothy and had an unusually high amount of peas. Also the noodles were macaroni noodles. Not terrible, but not what I expected. Now. The service. I was disappointed. We came in at 1 and didn't leave until 2:20, which, for lunch, is a really long time. And it wasn't by choice. It seemed absurd that it took so long since the place wasn't so busy. When we came in our server told us that fresh bread was on the way, and we were very excited because FREE FRESH BREAD. But then no bread came. Our server came back and apologized, saying it was being baked and was on its way. We understood and continued to wait patiently. Then a manager (I assume) stopped by and asked if we needed anything. We simply said "we're still waiting on the bread, but everything's great!" and he was like "coming right up!". Then our meals came. So, no bread then? Oh, ok. Here's the thing. I wouldn't mind not getting any bread if they hadn't PROMISED that is was on the way. Really, stop teasing me! This automatically makes my meal more enjoyable. Salut is a great place for HH. My mom & I got a bottle of wine that was the same price I pay for it at Surdyk's! The strawberry salad has an amazing champagne-strawberry vinaigrette. I want the recipe! The oysters are $2.95 a pop which is fairly reasonable for my new favorite food. I've had friendly service when I've stopped in. I haven't sampled much besides a few salads, the pizza of the day & the oysters. I met a friend and her daughter for sunday brunch before i had to jump on a plane home. I was worried that it would be really busy for sunday brunch and make me late for my plane but we got there right at 10am when it opened and got a table right away. We did have a reservation but didn't need it. The space was larger than i expected, the service was fast and friendly. I got the Quiche Lorraine and it was WONDERFUL. it came with cheesy hash potatoes and a fresh croissant. The portions were not too big and not too small. I find lately that many brunch restaurants serve such big portions that i cannot eat them all or do i want to. I wish I had a never-ending glass of Salut's blackberry martini to get me through family visits during the holidays. It's perhaps my favorite drink I can get in the Minneapolis. Suppose it depends on the condition of the blackberries, but hmmm boy. That baby is perfect. This is one of the few exceptions for me in thinking a drink is actually worth $10+. They even put in two sparklers for the occasion. I thought it was really strange when the hostess seated us way in the back. I've been to Salut twice, with 4-star food and service each time. It's a bit loud, but I didn't mind. The atmosphere is fun and the bathrooms are adorable and clean - always a plus. It seems to be a bit of a cougar bar - meh. They don't shy away from that reputation on their website, though. I don't think sitting at the bar would be my thing at this restaurant. My favorites - the bread and butter they bring to the table. Few things in life are as great as real creamy butter. Awesome. The crab cake appetizer is great - not too small, the perfect size to share. I'm a huge fan of the fries with bearnaise sauce.. can't go wrong with that! I love the steaks here - even the hangar (cheap) steak tastes great and isn't tough. The filet oscar is amazing.. I guess when you combine my already favorite things - steak, crab, bearnaise sauce - you can't go wrong. The red velvet cake is delish - but I think it's the same cake at all of the Parasole restaurants. At least between Salut and the (now closed) Figlio. It's really good, and a huge portion. Prices seem reasonable - husband and I did dinner right with a few glasses of wine, a shared appetizer, entrees for each and dessert and we came out under $125. I've never been wowed by the host staff - they often act like they don't really have the time for you, maybe a little power-trippy. I feel that way about most host staff in the twin cities, though. Server envy, perhaps? All of the servers we've had have at Salut were fantastic. They know their menus, and it shows. read more

It's funny, but all the people that have given bad reviews to Salut are really discounting it because Salut is in Edina and they just don't like Edina. In my opinion, they are not really being objective. If you haven't showered in four days and they look at you funny, it's not because it's an Edina restaurant, it's because you stink. As a New Jersey resident who hopefully is more objective, I can say that Salut is fantastic. The prices are really quite reasonable; maybe not by Minnesota standards, but we feel like we are getting a deal when we come here. We love the pommes frites, the kids meals and basically everything on the menu. The service is usually great. We tried sitting outdoors the last time we came and had a ball. We usually get the gang together and have table of 6-10, including kids. We prefer it for lunch. This is a must for us on our trips to Minnesota. read more

Pretty good ersatz French food with some bargains and outstanding dishes. Great service. Salut is a formula restaurant dreamed up by Parasole and usually it delivers. On occasion my chicken has been a bit underdone which makes me a bit leery of ordering it but this last Monday it was just fine. All ages seem to love this place and they do a great job with big tables including various nieces and nephews with kid palates and phobias. I was really surprised to read negative comments on the service. That is the one thing that has been 100% consistently good. Usually we ask for Eric who is super. Last Monday we went for their $10 wine by the bottle special. They do a nice job finding some real tasty bargains. The waitstaff seemed a bit stressed but they handled it well. (Eric was off duty, sadly.) Most at the table had the hangar steak which is always good - and the fries are great. Chocolate cake is back on the menu but a shadow of its former self according to the experts at the table. All in all a pretty good place especially for groups with varying tastes. "I have to give Salut 5 stars just based on my opinion of one dish. Their burgers. If I was given a choice of getting a burger anywhere, Salut is always my first choice. They understand the meaning of medium rare leaning towards rare. The meat itself is juicy and tasty. The bacon and cheddar on the Cheeseburger Royale are fantastic. The prices on the burgers are more than reasonable, especially if you go for the fries, which are the best in the Cities, in my opinion. Even if you aren't going to eat the fries, skip the small salad. It's pathetic. I promise you, get the burger and be amazed. The only other thing on the menu that I love is their mussels. You get a gigantic amount for $6, and the sauce they are served in is amazing. It's great on the fries! Otherwise, my mom had their tuna sandwich and was totally in love with it. My fiancee sometimes gets the Croque Madame (ham, egg, and cheese sandwich), and he loves that too. The downside is that the rest of their menu seems to be overpriced for what you get. I've had the hanger steak once, and it was just "ok", not nearly worth the money I paid for it. It is loud, no matter what time you go. If you go during peak hours, there's usually a really long wait. Oh, and don't even think about sitting at the bar while you wait. The bartenders tend to give really dirty looks. I asked the waitress to let the chef know that I was vegan, and what options he may be able to recommend. Within 5 minutes Steven the chef came to our table to consult with me. He let me know what options he could make for me. My dinner was presented to me by the chef with everyone elses, a beautiful fall roasted vegetable medley with a mushroom consume. This is your typical over-the-top Edina restaurant. I will admit, we did have pretty good service, nothing more than expected, but up to par with what I expect. On to the food. I got the salmon and am not usually too picky on how it looks and what comes with it. For the price, I'd expect a little more than the portion size I was given. Dry. Dry. Dry. I have no idea how to make salmon myself (hence why I go out and pay more than it's worth) but I assure you, I have had better from many other places who didn't charge me nearly as much. I don't really think I will be giving this place a second chance being that it is not really my crowd to be around (typical Edina) and felt as though everyone was looking at me asking, "who is that kid?" Turns out, I was probably thinking worse thoughts about them then they were about me. Tips: Don't get the salmon. I've been to this location a few times now, most recently for a birthday outing for a friend over the weekend. To be honest, I wasn't excited to come here as I feel like the prices are too high for what you get. It feels like this place is trying to be really high end, but the food quality is more neighborhood pub in my opinion. I had a dirty martini with blue cheese olives to start, and it was really good. I did the calamari app as my meal, and that was good as well -- I liked the addition of the peppers on the plate to add a little heat. Others had burgers that they said were just fine. So, all in all, the food was just fine, nothing amazing. What was fantastic was our server, I think her name was Jamie. She is awesome!! She did not rush us at all as we sat and sipped our drinks and chatted for a few hours and was just the right amount of attentive. She bumped my review up from 2 to 3 stars. Located near 50th and France the rodeo drive of minnesota the restaurant has a nice open floor plan... the bar is fun with tall stacks of simple labelled red and white wine, Two stuffed wild boars wearing scarfs flank the bar. The appetizers were excellent, Don't miss the double layered roman cracker style crust pizza. Look to spend around 60-70 bucks for two...this is afterall Edina. 6 of us came in for dinner last Saturday night. I've been here for work lunches and a happy hour or two during the week and it's always been... fine. Given the mixed dinner reviews I was a little nervous. We arrived about 10 minutes prior to our reservation and we ended up scoring a table in the bar because it just happened to clear. The bar was a madhouse and I do have to say, "Really? 4 tables in the bar? In the heart of Edina's shopping district?" We were really squished and bumped around which was annoying. I ordered some sort of Lemon Martini and it was like drinking Lemonade-Everclear or something. I can hold my own but that thing was potent (and really, really good). We had reservations at 8:00 and were seated around 8:20. Not awesome, but not terrible. For appetizers, the table ordered the baked brie, which was pretty cold and rubbery. No one was very impressed. We also ordered calamari, which was really heavily breaded but did have banana peppers and jalapenos which we all liked. Our dinners were actually really good. I ordered the filet mignon, even though I've never even considered Salut for steak. It was excellent! Not up there with Manny's but not far from it. My boyfriend had the hangar steak and he really liked it too and it was loaded with blue cheese. We ordered sides of macaroni and cheese (yummy if you add salt), mushrooms (good with a mix of ports, shiitakes and oysters) and brussels sprouts. The sprouts bombed - undercooked with a big handful or red pepper flakes. Not a good mix. The fries with my steak were to die for - crispy and salty. Honestly, the Lemon drink that I'd had along with the wine we ordered pretty much resulted in my not paying attention to anyone else's food. Sorry. They all said it was surprisingly good though. Since my sister and I had been on vacation we had only eaten what seemed like burgers and pizza so we were more than thrilled to have a nice lunch. Our group of creatives, in town for an agricultural conference, came to Salut after a long day of learning, connecting and international shop-talking. It's worth noting, first and foremost, that our server was Carol, aka "You can call me Gorgeous." Within a few minutes, I recognized her... Carol's the server you always want, but can never find in the service industry: she's personable, well-spoken, kind, playful and witty. Heck, you might even say that she was the perfect guide for our culinary experience, because everything she recommended and said was spot-on. Moving on to the food, we started with escargot and baguettes. Neither snails nor sauce failed to impress, so those were gone in seconds, not minutes. Next up, I had short rib pappardelle (braised ribs, garlic confit, cured tomatoes, braising jus and truffle crème fraîche), which was a generous serving of near-perfect French comfort food. Plenty of nice options on the menu, but I always go in one direction: Croque Madame. I have had many versions of this delightful dish that consists of baguette, ham, gruyère, a fried egg and a little butter, salt and pepper. Some add mayonnaise as well. Anyhow, I would have to say Salut aces it each time and I haven't had it better, even in France. I did lie a little: I don't always go in one direction and I have sampled some other menu items and I haven't gone wrong once. So, give it a try and you won't be upset. read more

The hostess seemed confused as to where to put a table of 4 and (while it wasn't busy when we came in) we had to wait 10 minutes because a) we didn't have a reservation and b) not all of our party was here. Her rudeness and lack of professionalism (including her attire) Was VERY off putting and not what I am used to from Salut . That being said, our lunch was fantastic! The hangar steak was phenomenal, and our server, Dirk, was professional AND hilarious. Attention to detail is VERY important to me, and he was absolutely spot on with everything. It is always nice that a manager stops by to see how your experience is going,too. And you HAVE to have oysters here! Best in the city! As well as their incredible pear torte!!!
