Really neat place with a cool hipster kind of atmosphere and nice clean decor. Service is really great, on my last trip our server Dirk was amazing, and went out of his way to be more than accommodating (thanks dood)! My mother ordered a Stella and tried a sip of my Fulton and realized she liked that better, so the Stella was on the house and she was brought a Fulton, Note - she didn't ask for this they just did it. I'd consider the food above average but personally would like the serving sizes to be a little larger. They make a great lobster roll and the eggs benedict are crazy tasty. The grilled brie tapas is really good too (Another note - it's only enough for one person). Once we were done eating our server came to the table with a dessert and we hadn't ordered any dessert. He said to us, it's his favorite and he wanted us to try it so it was on him. I don't know what was going on this particular day but it was very generous and appreciated greatly. I met a girlfriend at Salut for lunch last week and was pleasantly surprised. They had a 3-course lunch menu for $9.95. We both ordered a salad, pasta with shrimp and tomatoes and a small dessert. The food was fantastic! The pasta was not overcooked and the shrimp were cooked perfectly. We gave this place three tries, twice for brunch, once for dinner: The first brunch was the only satisfying; the baguette & butter was very good, so was the egg-white omelette. The second time, I tried the smoked salmon omelette which turned out to be too greasy and salty. So we haven't been here for 2 years. 2 years ago the food used to be mediocre at best. BUT....they recently changed their manager and head chef...and the food was REALIY good. Service has always been good but now the food matches. The mussels are insane. The kids mac and cheese is a winner. (The kids burger is basically a slider and should be bigger). Salut is good. Definitely not the best restaurant in the Twin Cities but it has a good atmosphere and decent food. I've been here a few times and I always enjoy my meal, but it's never amazing. For some reason I always have trouble picking something off the menu. I actually went to both Salut locations within a span of two weeks and both times I was left wondering if this was all there was to French-inspired food. If so, I guess my life has been vastly better for having not eaten French food until now. At the St. Paul location, I ordered their prix fixe menu for lunch which included a salad or soup, entree and dessert. I got the house salad, a crepe filled with mushrooms and topped with chicken, and a turtle brownie. The salad was mediocre, edible but nothing to rave about. The brownie was a brownie. The crepe itself was good, but the chicken that they put on top was so bland that I ended up not even eating it and just pushing it to the side. Was it an ok meal? Sure. Was it worth $10? I've had better. I had dinner at the Edina location, and having experienced the lack of wonder that the St. Paul location had done with meat, I opted to get the Butternut Squash Tortellaci in a butter mushroom sauce. It definitely was a bad choice. The tortellaci themselves were good, the butternut sweet but not cloying, however yet again Salut drowned the pasta in sauce and it just overwhelmed everything. I ended up scooping the tortellaci out of the sauce and eating them on a bread plate, otherwise it tasted like you were eating candied garlic cloves. Another person at my table order the Croque Madame, and having eaten them before when she travelled to France she was very excited. Let's say that the only thing gone from her dish that night was the ham, and that even with a full plate, the only leftovers she took home was someone else's dinner. I don't recommend Salut at all for anyone who actually wants to enjoy their entire dish and not just one of the ingredients on the plate. I guess if you're one of the people who are in love with the French and anything French, you'd enjoy this place, but if you're looking for a good meal, then head over to Cossetta's in St. Paul. Different cuisine but it has the same feel with better food. As for the crowd, didn't pay much attention to them as I went to hang out with friends and not to scope out the scene. It was your typical Abercrombie/American Eagle-wearing suburban people, but not a snot fest as far as I could tell. I did get a few stares when I walked in alone and waited for my group to arrive, but that may have been more because I was the only Asian in a sea of marshmallow whiteness. read more

The atmosphere is fun, but the fun stops there. The food was not good. My lady ordered a burger medium well and it came out medium rare. I ordered the filet and shrimp special. My steak was supposed to be medium rare, but it was well done and the shrimp were overcooked. Even if the food was cooked properly, it still left a lot to be desired and was overpriced. If you're looking to grab a drink and appetizer this place is fine. Unfortunately, if you're looking for a nice dinner don't bother going to Salut. WOW and not a good WOW!! Couldn't find our reservation when we walked in, good thing they had plenty of tables. Water is served in bottles...warm....gross!! Then $2 for half a baguette.... in a French restaurant?? No...seriously. My food was good, just good. They didn't get my husbands right and by the time the new entree arrived I had finished eating. When the bill came I was charged for a bottle of champagne when i ordered a glass. The service is best described as meteoric, had to ask for our waitress twice, empty dishes had to me moved to the very edge of table to be picked up, the attitude was not welcoming and when I slipped in that we were celebrating my birthday, just to see if she as listening....nope not even a Happy Birthday. Seriously best lamb chops for lunch yesterday! Maininated in herby-lemony mix. Cooked perfectly to my specs. Came with a saffron couscous with currents... and a scallion r,ulsion... and perfect garlicy spinich. Our first time to Salut Edina was amazing from start to finish. Jamie, our waitress, was wonderful and seemed to genuinely enjoy her job. She was friendly and explained the menu and happy hour specials perfectly. We enjoyed the lamb and the deal of the night Shepards Pie with chocolate mousse for dessert along with happy hour drinks. We easily made reservations on Open Table and got in immediately upon arrival. For starters we enjoyed bread with the most delicious whipped butter ever! This is not my first time yelping, of at Salut, but the outstanding service we received on Saturday night is worth this review!!!!! Our server, Dan, brought a level of excellence to our experience that one would expect to find at an upscale restaurant rather than what you'd expect at a neighborhood restaurant. Professional and friendly in his approach, suggesting we start with "the adult Lime-Aide" with muddled Raspberries(amazing), he acknowledged the fact right away that it was a birthday celebration for my friend. He presentation of the specials was mouth-watering and , after ordering mussels and oysters, took our food order. I had the Rabbit Confiet with Gnocchi, which was absolutely awesome in appearance and flavors, My husband the duck, And our friends had the Djion Salmon and the Sea bass with artichokes (at Dan's recommendation) . The Meiomi Pinot Noir he suggested to go with all these dishes was spot on. Needless to say, all the food was incredible as always, I tried a bit of everything, and Dan was right, the Sea Bass was phenomenal with a pinot noir! We ended the night with the Mint Chocolate Bomb, resplendent with sparklers, and cappuccino. We have been to both Saluts a number of times, but this service experience combined with the talents of the chefs at this location, will keep us coming back. What would you get if Bennigan's changed from an Irish theme to French? Salut! You get the same cavernous dining space stuffed with booths (but red, instead of green), the same hokey, not-even-trying-to-be-authentic decor and that same comforted feeling of a slick corporate operation. It's like Disney's Epcot French experience rather than, you know, an actual French experience. But I don't dine on the decor, I dine on the food and drink. Regarding the latter, Salut seems focused on their wine. I'm not qualified to judge the selection on the higher-end bottles; their by-the-glass selection seemed adequate but not very interesting (the "Bon" choice was La Vieille Ferme). So it was going to be a beer night. My choices? Summit EPA, Blue Moon, Stella Artois... Pretty uninspired. There's no excuse for having such a crappy beer selection in the Twin Cities, as blessed by good local options as we are. But there's nothing wrong with Summit (you just see it everywhere) so I went with the EPA. For dinner, my companion and I both ordered burgers--I the Burger Bar Americain (with bleu cheese and sauce bordelaise) and she Le Cheeseburger Royale (bacon cheeseburger with lettuce, tomatoes, onion). I ordered my burger rare and it came as ordered; the bun was well engineered to collect the burger's juices and the bordelaise was meaty and satisfying, although a little crowded out in some bites by the pungent bleu cheese. Her burger was requested medium-rare and came out with not a spot of pink inside; obviously medium if not well-done. As a result the burger was pretty tasteless. But had it been properly cooked I am sure it would have been as meaty as mine was. On the side of both burgers was a little cup of fries--sorry, frites. This was actually why we had decided on Salut in the first place; reports of the best fries in town. But on seeing these crumbled leavings I could tell that wasn't going to be the case. No fry in my cup was over an inch and a half. Those that weren't broken and mangled were overcooked. They have the characteristic tenderness of twice-fried fries but given the sorry shape they were in these fries were either over-blanched in the first place or we were getting the scrapings of the bottom of the fry bucket. The highlight of our meal at Salut was just after our drinks arrived when a waiter brought a piece of baguette (in branded paper bag, of course) and butter whipped with kosher salt. The baguette was well made and the butter creamy and salty. But it is not so hard to come by good bread in these cities, and the baguette hardly makes up for the sad drink selection, uneven burgers and sad fries. And if you're like me, it's pretty hard to get past the hokey faux-french veneer of the whole thing and enjoy your meal. read more

My husband and I met some very dear friends of ours at Salut last night. It took us 30 minutes to finally get a drink. I ordered the chicken chopped salad, and I can tell you, it certainly was NOT worth $18! I could have made that same salad at home for about $1.50. My husband ordered this egg sandwich, and his comment was he could have made better at home. It was not worth $15.50! The point is, the meals are very over priced, they are very mediocre. My husband ordered for a drink a VO and diet coke, no lime. They charged him $8!! No lime!! When our meals came out, the waitress asked if we needed anything else. Yes, how about the rest of our meal? Some of the meal was missing. Don't waste your time and money at this restaurant. We visited Salut in Edina last night and here are our thoughts. Drinks: My boyfriend ordered the Manfashion Manhattan and I debated over the tried and and true Kettle One Martini but opted for the when in Rome, Lavender Martini. We both quite liked the Manfashion and thought the Lavender Martini was lovely but probably not for an entire drink. Popcorn with Siracha was brought instead of bread and was a nice flavor but the popcorn was definitely somewhat soggy. On purpose? I have no idea. Dinner: I then had a beautiful Cesar salad with salmon and poached egg. Yummy. Boyfriend ordered the Cheeseburger Royal. He ordered medium rare and said it was more medium than medium rare but that he liked it very much and would definitely order again! Also liked the fries. Service: Server Sally was Swell! read more

So the 3 1/2 starts it gets on average is probably about right. I rounded up because the service was fantastic ... and because you can't actually give half stars. Food was good ... not the best I've ever had but good. Wife and I both had burgers. I had the French onion burger which was cool twist on two favorites. You actually get a side of French onion broth to dip your burger it. It was really good. The rest of the menu was ... I'd call it eclectic. I've been to a lot of restaurants but never a French restaurant ... so maybe it's pretty traditional as far as French goes. They had some interesting options to choose from. They did some cool things like Julia Childs Monday's where the chefs special is something from Julia. They also take a famous restaurant from France each month and serve some of their traditional dishes. Kind of a cool idea. All in all food was good. Service and accoutrements earned a little extra love from me. Definitely worth a shot. read more

I and two others ordered the Hanger steak, which was really very good. I ordered it rare, which is was, and was delicious. The herb butter it came with was very good, and the steak fries were excellently crispy. Our wine was a little warm, but not terrible by any means. The red velvet cake was thick with cream cheese frosting, but fresh tasting. We were there for New Year's Eve supper, and I can say Salut as really very good. Oui oui! Salut is considerably more charming than some other Parasole establishments, and it makes for a nice treat every once in a while. I could eat the mini baguettes and perfectly salty butter everyday, so it's a good thing I don't come here too often...the fries are good, especially when dipped in Bearnaise. I brought some out of town colleagues to Salut for dinner and drinks. They were VERY impressed with the overall ambience, decor, and more importantly, the food and service. We shared several things to enjoy the entire experience. The mussels were so flavorful; the cheese plate seemed like a nice compliment, which it was. We shared the Chestnut soup from the French Regional menu and it was so beautifully served in a mini terrine and full of exquisite flavor. The special for the night was scallops served on risotto with mushrooms (the description on the menu is described more eloquently than I'm able to provide here) and it was absolutely amazing. We finished our meal with a shared creme brulle - the perfect light finish to a perfect meal. Our server, Tanja, and Chef Justin added the extra touches to make us feel very special and welcome. I had a great afternoon at Salut! Met two girl friends for lunch, so not sure if it was the fun company, the bright atmosphere, the wonderful service, or the great menu, but I was loving Salut! We all had the double fish plate, which was SO GOOD...grilled salmon, seared tuna and a tasty little salad in the middle.
