Sam Sato's has not disappointed me in all my visits. Yes the wait can be long. But when you ono da kine, you can endure. Having saimin here is a must when I visit Maui. Good saimin is hard to get, even with the culinary diversity in Southern California. It's that good. Just as I remember having when I was small kine back on Oahu.
Came here to try out the famous dry mein. Got lucky and were able to be seated immediately as there was a table open, even though the restaurant was packed. Had tons of people waiting for take out as well. Server was super on it and took our order quickly. Got the dry mein, cheeseburger, french fries, and beef stick. Dry mein was delicious. Like friend noodles with some soup on the side. Noodles were flavorful and cooked well and light broth complimented it well. Got to try the cheeseburger as well. So flavorful. Reminded me of in-n-out with the thin patty and the mustard mayo that they gave on the side. The beef sticks were charred super well and had a nice meaty flavor. I ate it so quickly! Got some french fries too and they were hot and crispy! On the way out got some of their manju. Small, but delicious! Will be back again! Parking: Parking in the lot in the front or on the street.
Tried Sam Sotos after seeing it all over social and had to check the hype for myself. It's definitely a small, hole-in-the-wall spot that feels very local and low-key, which I actually liked. I ordered the dry noodles with chicken -- flavors were solid and you can tell the ingredients are fresh and good quality. Portion size for the price felt pretty average, nothing that really stood out or made me want to come back. It's good, just not that good. Service was fast, host was attentive. Overall, a decent spot to try once if you're nearby, but honestly you can skip the hype -- not a must-hit. Rating 4/5.
Upon Arriving to Maui we had to check out the Sam Sato's for lunch before it closes at 2 pm. Was recommended by my co- worker who frequently dines there. So we tried the BBQ beef sticks, hamburger steak & BbQ plate which was so delicious! Homemade style just how we like it, also bought a variety of pineapple coconut, apple, blueberry, and azuki beans turnover and manju pastries. It was a 45 min wait to get a sitting, but it was worth it! Next time we gotta try the dry noodles!! Mahalo Sam Sato's.
this restaurant offers traditional Hawaiian comfort dishes such as dry mein (like Saimin but dry noodles), breakfast items like pancakes and loco moco, and diner type foods like burgers and fries. When we arrived around 9am on a Wednesday (new years eve), there were already people eating at the restaurant. They have a takeout counter for takeout orders only but if you want to dine in, make sure your entire party is present, otherwise they won't seat you. Plenty of parking in front of the restaurant. Restaurant was very homey and had comfortable seating and booths. We ordered a family style mix of dishes since we came with a local friend and wanted to try all their dishes. I was really excited to try the dry mein, because I love noodles. The noodles were springy and I could definitely tell they were made in house but was a bit disappointed in the flavor of the noodles alone. I enjoyed it more with the dashi broth that they give on the side though. The fried rice and yakitori were also filling. My favorite had to be the banana pancakes. The pancakes were so fluffy, light, and the banana pieces added a sweet kick at the end. The entire meal cost us around $80 for 7 people which is an amazing price point!! I would definitely come back and recommend if you want some comfort Hawaiian food here in Maui.
Amazing local dining destination in Wailuku. Limited spots in the parking lot. We lucked out to be seated at a two top upon arrival (8/29/25). We started with half a papaya served with a juicy lemon wedge. Amazingly fresh! The Homie had a small loco moco and then later ordered a perfectly griddled pancake. I ordered a classic breakfast with two overeasy eggs, steamed rice, Portuguese sausage, and an orange wedge. I also glanced at their well stocked pastry case. Note: breakfast is served only until 11am Lunch menu and specials look equally as tasty. It was so tasty, we returned as our last meal before heading to the Kahului Airport (9/2/25). This time we had a short wait to be seated, just make sure to get your name and number in your party on the clipboard. We feasted on 4 grilled beef skewers and a small order of the dry noodles. No frills ambiance, but clean restrooms, and genuine welcoming staff. Genuine ohana and aloha spirit! Highly recommended!
The hamburger steak patty was not our favorite and I didn't like the tuna melt as they mixed what taste like relish in it. The dry mien is great as always and the cheeseburger deluxe is my go to, to pair with the noodles. We ordered two orders of fries and it never came out till we were almost done eating so my kids never had a chance to enjoy it with their cheeseburger. When I went to remind the waitress she said it was about a 30min wait. That's a long wait just for fries. She should have told us this in the beginning as I wouldn't have cancelled the ordered. Service was good but a bit too hot for me to dine in. It was really busy and loud and the wait can be very long. The restaurant isn't that big but it definitely needs an A/C upgrade!
So happy to have a chance to visit Maui and make our first stop at Sam's! We got here 40 min before closing, but fortunately, they were able to accommodate us! We were all looking forward to try their famous Dry Min and shared the Mac Salad, Saimin, Teri Burger & their famous Teri sticks (tastes like Obon) and Azuki & Lima Bean manju. True Aloha hospitality here especially since you can see all the Aunties behind the weathered screen door, making everything from scratch... and their mac salad is DEFINITELY on point!! Hope to visit again soon!
Had to come try this place based on all the reviews and recommendations. Was not disappointed. The staff is very friendly, hard working and attentive. Service was very fast. We tried the dry mein and the special Saimin soup, both reasonably priced. The dry mein was excellent with an al dente finish on the noodles. The pork was tender and the accompanying soup was good to add to the bowl of noodles as needed. The special Saimin soup had a different broth than the Saimin we've had on Oahu and Kauai. It was more of a miso broth than a shoyu broth and probably would not order it again. Overall, a great experience and will be back in the future to try some other items.
Since it was my first time ever coming to Hawaii, I had to try some Saimin. Sam Sato's specializes in dry Saimin, and, wow, it was delicious!! I wish I got her name, but our server was so, so helpful and kind! She gave us recommendations and how she likes to eat the dry saimin. thanks to her our experience was 1000/10. The noodles dipped in the Chinese mustard mixed with shoyu followed by a sip of broth - chefs kiss!! The noodles alone were great, but the combo with everything made it perfect. The mini loco moco was simple but delicious! And we finished everything off with their with manju which was recommended to us by our server. Both flavors were really yummy. Sam Sato's was such a great experience during my visit to Wailuku! The homey vibes of the restaurant (so many regulars came walking in), the amazing service, and the delicious food. I will remember it all fondly.
This place has been a family favorite of ours for year... and when I say years I mean YEARS!!!! Over 20 years we've been going and the food never changes. Always consistent and always so good. The dry mein is something that is their specialty and you have to get it. There's something about the dashi that goes with it that just makes the noodles so tasty. Don't be afraid if there's a line, because there will be, they turn tables fast and people are considerate and don't just sit and take up space. I have yet to find a place on Oahu that can even compare to Sam Satos.
I have been a noodle girly since day 1 so Sam Sato's had my name written all over it! This is more of a local spot, so I'm so happy I found it! We came by for a late lunch and had to wait maybe less than 5 minutes for a table. Food came out at lightning speed. The portions are super generous and may or may not put you in a food coma for the rest of the afternoon. Make sure you get the skewers! My mom doesn't look noodles that much so she ordered the beef tomato dish and the beef was really tasty! It was her favorite dish. In addition to really quick service, they create a warm and welcoming environment. Will definitely be back the next time I'm visiting!

Been waiting for years since my last Maui trip to visit here. They seem to always be consistently busy with lots of locals frequenting here. If you're a carb fiend, this is the place for you. The dry mein noodles don't pack too much flavor itself, but adding soy sauce always helps. The soup broth side is light and just savory enough to keep you wanting more. The yakitori chicken unexpectedly reminded me of a Chinese style bbq chicken. Hard pass on the chow fun noodles; incredibly bland and no wok seared flavor. Overall prices were affordable which makes it worthwhile for a visit or takeout. read more
A friend flew in from Maui and gave me this box of Manju from San Sato's it is a well known item from Maui! People traveling from Maui or People that visit Maui always make a stop to get some Sam Sato's Manju. Onside it is filled with white Lima bean paste not too sweet with a baked crust. Other items are Homemaid Bakery, Tasaka Guri Guri only thing you cannot put it in your carry on it has to be checked in as luggage. A local guide recommended Sam Sato's for some homestyle cooking, so we made sure to stop by. This place was BUSY even 30 minutes before closing on a Saturday, but we ordered for takeout smoothly. First, we had the beef stick, which was nice and flavorful. A good snack to eat in the car. Nice kbbq type flavor. We got a large dry mein, given that it is the signature dish here. Unfortunately, the mein slightly missed the mark for us. It is, as the name implies, very dry but also not too flavorful. The noodles are chewy/doughy and honestly just tastes like dough when you have a mouthful. Adding the broth on the side helped the flavor somewhat, mostly by adding salt, but we were still unsure why this dish is so popular when it just seems like underseasoned chow mein. We both remarked that it would've been better with some sort of hot sauce, but alas, we got takeout so were unable to add any chili water. This is a fine side, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat this when there are so many other great noodle options in Maui. The large is a very generous portion. We wanted to try loco moco, but it is only available on the breakfast menu, so we got a hamburger plate. This consisted of two burger patties covered in gravy, white rice, and Mac salad. Solid, savory meal. We enjoyed this more than the dry mein. Overall, Sam Sato's offers some cozy, homestyle, no-frills comfort foods. However, I think there are better options in the area. read more
You can tell this place is an institution. A true community hub. There is so much love to and from their regulars. When we went on a Saturday afternoon, it was crazy busy. We put our name down on the waiting list and sat outside for about half an hour. There was a good mix of locals and tourists when we went, but it felt like they really treat everyone like family. The servers were working their butts off making sure everyone had everything they needed and were having a good meal. The restaurant itself is not fancy. Like most of the island not taken over by big corporations and resorts, it has a really old school homey feel. Things definitely look worn by time but that's a vibe in itself. If you're looking for a light, delicate meal, this is not the place for you. This rearaunt serves food that your grandpa will make you after you got home from elementary school. The portions are huge, the food is no frills. Small dry noodles come tossed in soy sauce and topped with cha siu and a generous handful of roughly chopped spring onions and a small bowl of broth on the side. Say yes to the spicy mustard. The hamburger steak is two beef burgers topped with gravy and two scoops rice. The mac salad is excellent. Make sure you get the BBQ beef stick, that one is a winner, and I would come back just for that, but I would skip the chicken one. read more
Sam Sato's is a nostalgic place servicing local comfort food in a coffee shop style from the 80's. Restaurant like this is disappearing fast on Oahu for some reason. This was our first stop when we arrived in Maui early morning. You can do take out order from the outside window or dine in their cozy restaurant. They also have nice selection of Japanese Manju or baked Mochi with variety of fillings. We bought a whole bunch. They're homemade style with very light taste and not over powering. You can see few ladies hand folding the Manju through screen door. Staff are friendly, excellent and very efficient. read more
I have such fond memories of Sam Sato's, it's always a walk through memory lane when I stop by, which is a must whenever I'm home. I walk in and I'm transported back to my childhood, whether it was coming here with my parents or friends whenever we were dismissed from classes early in high school. This time, I met up with my cousins and begged them to have lunch there. It can get a little busy, especially during the weekends, but service is pretty quick from the moment you sit till when you're all pau (finished). The employees are all long time workers and always have a friendly smile on their face. I ordered my usual small dry mein with a cheeseburger on the side. Cousins ordered the same thing and a pancake for my nephew. Our noodles came out piping hot with the dashi on the side. Burgers and pancake followers shortly thereafter. I add some black pepper and a few spoonfuls of the dashi to my noodles and I'm good to go! The noodles are cooked al dente and have some bite to them. I love how the bean sprouts give a little crunch, green onions give some freshness, and the perfectly cooked char siu adds additional flavor and meatiness. The burger is always well seasoned and has that homey taste to it, sometimes I like to dunk it in the dashi just cause I've been doing that since I was a child lol Make sure to save room for their manju (adzuki or lima bean) at the end or take some home with you! They also have fruit turnovers/pockets that you can never go wrong with. My personal favorite is the adzuki bean manju. Everything you want out of a mom & pop noodle shop! Everyone is so friendly, the food is delicious and comes out quick, and prices are more than fair. The perfect local stop for breakfast or lunch. Place does get busy quick so come early if you're not in the mood to wait. read more
Are you really from Maui if you've never had Sam Sato's noodles? Lol. For real though, Sam Sato's is a Maui institution. This family-owned restaurant's history dates back to 1933 when Sam Sato opened a small eatery in Spreckelsville, a sugar-plantation camp on the road between Kahului and Paia. After moving a few times, they finally settled in the Wailuku Industrial area where the restaurant has planted it's roots for the last 30 years. Over the years, Sam Sato's has become synonymous with dry mein noodles which is their best selling dish. The mix of perfectly al dente noodles, bits of char siu pork, bean sprouts, and green onions has become an incredibly popular local comfort food. It's what they are known for and you really can't go without trying this dish! They are also known for their homemade manju -- a traditional Japanese baked pastries filled with sweetened bean and starch pastes. The recipes for the lima bean and azuki bean manju was created by Gladys Sato (Sam's wife) and has remained unchanged. Of the two, I prefer the lima bean manju, but both are good. It's been many many years since I've actually gone to the restaurant and sat down to enjoy the food, but there's no shortage of events and potlucks where Sam Sato's makes an appearance. People tend to order trays of their noodles for parties. The taste is usually pretty consistent, I just wish there was more char siu. I also recommend a splash of Aloha shoyu for some extra flavor. They do have other menu items like hamburger and fries and local grinds like chopped steak, teriyaki beef, hamburger steak, beef tomato, and more as well. Overall, I recommend a stop here. Sam Sato's gives me a sense of nostalgia as I grew up eating their noodles. They're one of the last mom and pop shops standing, but I hope they continue to thrive and remain a Maui staple for years to come. read more
I really wanted to try this spot and the only way I could do is was to get food to bring on the plane. That meant no saimin which was a bummer. It was also a risk to eat the noodles after they cooled down a bit but I was willing to give it a try and glad I did. It's a small spot in a little neighborhood and parking is tough to find. They have a take out counter to the left of the entrance or you can walk in and order at the counter. I got the super dry which is dry noodles with veggies and other toppings, a small broth, and the lima bean manju. The order came out real quick so that was nice. I first drank the broth since I couldn't bring it through security. It was a delicious broth, full of flavor although not heavy like some broths. Then I ate the manju which was also good. I'm not a red bean paste person and the mushed lima bean texture wasn't my favorite but it was still pretty good. I also took a bite of the noodles while fresh. And tht was the right call because the you really got to taste how good the noodles are. A lot of flavor in the noodles, cooked perfectly al dente and really a step above most noodles out there. Even by the time I ate the noodles on the plane, it was still delicious. Now normally you would dip the noodles in their mustard sauce and then the broth and eat it but even without the broth it was delicious. This place was so good. Such a bang for your buck! A hamburger for $5 is basically unheard of. I came on a Thursday at peak lunch time and their restaurant was pretty much full. We got seated right away and served immediately. The people serving us were so kind and personable - really felt like a true mom and pop shop! We got the dry mein, bbq beef skewer, vegetable salad, and hamburger steak. I was most excited for the mein but I was actually a little disappointed. It was pretty plain and even after dipping it in the soup, it was still kind of plain. The solution: chili water. I asked for hot sauce and they offered their chili water which is vinegar based and it is SO GOOD. Highly recommend asking for that. The bbq beef skewer was probably the best thing we got. The salad was really just veggies which was refreshing and the hamburger steak was what you'd expect. The food was pretty good for what you're paying. The whole restaurant feels really homey and the service was top notch. I'd highly recommend the beef stick and getting the dry noodle with the chili water! Parking was super easy with 2 parking lots and it was clear that this is a local favorite! read more
A MUST when you come to Maui. Parking: The parking lot gets crowded quickly so you can try to also find street parking in the area. Service: The waitresses were really nice and super friendly, hard workers especially cuz they are always busy. Food: Dry min is the MUST over here. Get it get it get it!!! Cuz it's ono! And also the teri burger is amazing, it's not what you think it's actually teriyaki beef slices and so soft and perfect. They are also well known for there manju. Atmosphere: I'm just warning you guys again this place gets packed. Make sure you put your name on the waiting list as soon as you arrive. Maui staple through and through. Sam Sato's is an automatic choice for a local favorite to try. Definitely casual vibe with booths, tables and a few counter seats. Can't go wrong with a Dry Noodle and Cheeseburger or Sandwich Combo and share some fries with the table. All the workers are friendly even when they're busy. If you don't think you can be patient to dine-in, opt for calling ahead and getting take out. You know they're extra slammed if you can't get through on the phone and you have to order at the window and wait anyway. But the food comes out fast and is consistently tasty. Don't forget your hot mustard for your noodles and mayo/mustard for your fries. I don't typically deviate from my usual but have tried their beef sticks and banana pancakes. People also stop in for breakfast and plate lunch specials that change daily. And you can't leave without trying some of their manju (lima or azuki) or turnovers (many flavors but I love peach). read more
We were up early and managed to get into Sam Sato for breakfast with no line. Our server was so friendly. Food came out hot and quick. Ordered Dry Mein, Mini Loco Moco, Won Ton Mein, and Breakfast with eggs, Portuguese Sausage and Hashbrown. The Mini Loco Moco was the perfect portion for breakfast. The Dry Mein, is a must have. You can also order pans of dry mein. The large Won Ton Mein was a big portion. Next time we'll get a small order. They also offer fresh fruit, got half a papaya. We always take at least a dozen Lima Bean Manju to go. This is comfort local food at it's best. Be sure to stop by to support this local generational family business. read more

As always, Sam Sato's never disappoints. This time I got to dine in, which I was very excited about. I literally wanted to order everything off the menu. It was my friend's first time, and she enjoyed it just as much as I did. The plus side is they now accept card, and not cash only like when I was growing up lol. read more

Visiting our family on Maui and had never been to Sam Sato's, which is a local institution. We decided to change that this trip and O M G it was so good. If you are wanting local, authentic food you definitely need to come to Sam Sato's. Pretty tiny inside, but put your name on the list and they do a good job of getting people in and out. They close kinda early (like 2 pm) and then re-open again later for dinner, I think. We made it there around 12 noon and were eating like 30 mins later. We had the dry min, the saimin with dumplings, and some regular saimin. We also got sides of Mac salad and French fries and the beef sticks. Everything was SO flavorful and delicious. I'm still dreaming about these noodles. Cannot believe this was my first time here and I know it won't be my last. Can't go wrong at this local spot! read more
On my last visit to Maui, a colleague suggested Sam Sato and I'm so happy I had time before my flight to take it in. I will add by saying this post is not like my others as I only have one pic to share. This is a mom and pop place nestled in of of Maui's commercial/industrial areas. If you want ambience that's modern, don't come. What you will receive is a throwback to when at least my childhood. A throwback of comfortable and simple dining area with service that could be akin to family. The food is what makes this place a huge success. It was busy and for good reason. Their product speaks for itself and truly, they don't need assistance from Yelp. Word of mouth alone makes Sam Sato a local treasure! I will return to update. read more

Sam Sato's is a very nostalgic place for me. I have great memories with my family and friends at Sam Sato's. Whether it was arriving in a big group and sitting in the private side room or getting takeout to go to upcountry. Sam Sato's will always be a staple in my heart. There are so many options at Sam Sato's that everyone in your party will have something that they will eat and be happy eating. I'm this visit, I settled on the banana pancake, double dry mein, BBQ stick, and fries. Honestly, this is my order every time I come in. The banana pancake is such a delight and you have to wake up early in order to get it! It's a breakfast item, so come early and indulge in their pancakes. The banana pancake is unique because it's a mixture of a crisp exterior but a light and airy texture on the inside, creating the fluffiness of the pancake. The double dry mein is the main dish at Sam Sato's, the texture of the noodles are chewy and have a good bite to it. I preferably like eating my dry mein with light soup, shoyu, and a mix of pepper. As for the BBQ stick, it's always a delicious treat. The meat is well-marinated and very tender to the bite. The bbq sticks were paired with the fries and the fries were crispy on the outside. The concoction for the fry sauce = Mayo, ketchup, and a lil bit of mustard Overall, Sam Sato's always holds a special place in my heart. This is what I grew up on! The quality of the food, friendly service, and inviting atmosphere combined keeps people coming back for more. I highly recommend this local eatery to anyone. One of Maui's most famous restaurants, Sam Sato's is know for the excellent dry mein. Their dry mein comes with a side of dashi (soup) that you pour over the noodles. This adds to the taste and moistness of the noodles. I usually order the bbq beef sticks (1 stick per order) as a compliment to the noodles. The portion sizes are generous and prices are reasonable. I also like to order a couple their homemade manju's (lima bean one is my favorite.). It has a flaky shell but soft on the inside. If you want drinks, it's self serve from the fridge/cooler. Recommend coming early for lunch or after peak hours as it does really busy. This is must try place if visiting Maui and want to try one of their staple restaurants. read more

Whenever I go to Maui I love to eat at Sam Sato's. There is sometimes a wait time to be seated but it's so worth it. Their noodles are so delicious. I also love their french fries. The servers are super friendly. Location is in Kahului and there is a small parking lot. As for the restaurant itself, it has a home-like atmosphere and of course I always buy their baked manju to take home. read more

What time do they *really* close? The past two times we arrived on a Saturday about 12:30-ish, they were closed. Hours say open til 2p. But what is the real time?
They close once a year for R&R for about 2 weeks. Currently they're closed 5/20 - 6/4 according to recent pics.

I think you mean "manju" - it is a japanse pastry, doughy outside usually filled with sweek azuki past.
