After reading the reviews, I went to try Sam's donuts to satisfy my sweet tooth after lunch (1pm). My fave go-to donuts are usually a classic glazed yeast donut from Krispy Kreme; blueberry cake donut and chocolate covered donut with rainbow sprinkles from Dunkin; PASSIONFRUIT from Dough (in NYC). I got some of the classic glazed and one chocolate covered donut with sprinkles. They seem to have a wide selection/variety, which allows a good mix if you're going for a mixed dozen. Personally, I think they tasted okay, but not really different from a local supermarket bakery donut. I ate them right after I got them, but I think it would probably be stale the next day. The glaze was okay, flaky and hard, since I didn't go right when they opened, so donuts were cold/room-temp. Maybe they would be better if I got them upon opening, but I don't think Sam's lives up to the hype from other reviews. read more

I love how this location has lemon filled donuts. They have other filled flavors like custard, cherry which is a total score in my book. The donut case always seems to be full and clean. The ladies working at the counter are eager to get you in and out, and not having you waiting for a long period of time which is appreciated early in the morning. I don't go regularly but if I have a potluck or I want to surprise my co-workers I come here for my donuts. I usually stop here around 6:00-6:30 am. They have sprinkles, glazed, sugar, chocolate, plain, maple, etc. You can also find Cinnabons, bear claws here. This is my favorite donut shop in north county! Their donuts are very fairly priced and great quality. We always try and go early (usually before school) because they will run out of some of the more popular donuts a little later in the day since it is a smaller spot. Check your change! Check the prices! These two seem to adjust prices as they see fit! Called the owner out once for charging me 14 dollars for 3 donuts! When I stood there in shock, i mentioned this to the guy owner, asks me "are you sure"? As if he doesnt know that 3 donuts dont equal to 14 dollars! Has the nerve to check his machine, mind you, I'm still in line! At the register wondering still what just happened that I got charged 14 bucks! He looks into it, does some math in his head, then says oh yes I charge you more! Then starts to go into a deep explanation as to why it happened, mind you, this is the owner! Who just seconds before, was about to let me walk out having been over charged! So he finally gives me back the change for what the actuall donuts cost, 7 bucks and change! He knew! He knew he had over charged me! And was banking on the line being so big that I would just turn and exit like most,nope! Wasnt gonna get had that day! So please! I go here pretty often to grab a Sunday morning doughnut and I have to say I think it's my favorite in the area. Generally I'm a late riser so I usually miss out on the popular items and have to choose from the crumbs that are left but so far I haven't had that experience here. It seems that they are almost always well stocked with a variety of tasty doughnuts that are just the right size. I've never had an experience of getting a crusty old doughnut like I have at other shops and the people that work here have always been friendly. I will caution you NOT to drink the coffee here as I have very low standards in coffee but theirs is so gross and watery that I debated not drinking it! (Who am I kidding? So I went with one of their bagel breakfast sandwiches. Not an huge mistake it was decent but I ate the bagel sandwich with a smirk knowing that yummy glazed donuts were just behind that counter...somewhere! Anyway my bad for running late ill just have to get them next time. The store was relatively clean and there was the fun group of elderly gentlemen to chat with while I waited. Stopped in this morning for a quick breakfast because I just wasn't feeling McDonald's and it was across the street from my motel. It smelled like rotten eggs and chemicals. I looked over the case and at 9:20AM on a Wednesday, they hardly had anything. It was mostly plain donuts and a few croissants with fruit and cream cheese filling. I can only really make observations based on afternoon visits. To be fair I'm sure most donut shops (including this one) are far better in the morning but I haven't gone then so I can't comment on it. Nothing particularly bad or special about this Donut shop from my visits. I would go if I was in the area and really wanted a donut but I wouldn't go out of my way to get here. I've gone twice in the past couple of weeks, once close to closing on Saturday (after Thanksgiving) and then again two days later on Monday after work (I get off at 3:00PM) -- Both times selection left a lot to be desired. The first time it was understandable, It was right before closing on a holiday weekend, I wasn't expecting much. I figured it would be better after work on Monday but it was amazingly much worse. They had a reasonably large display case so I assume they have more donuts earlier in the day. That said - My donuts were fine. A bit on the dry side - you could tell they've been sitting out for awhile. Speaking solely for their late afternoon selection- expect to buy whatever happens to be free (likely a regular glazed donut) and get something to drink - it'll probably have been out there for awhile. That said, they're friendly, it's reasonably cheap, it's probably still better than the 7-eleven right across the street. One thing to note: They did have a custom croissant sandwich+coffee drink menu that other people were ordering from in the afternoon and they looked pretty good. I think they make them when you order so you're not just going to be limited like with the donuts. If you're there in the afternoon that may be a better thing to try. read more

In my opinion donuts from Sam's are the best around, and I've tried donuts from locations all over Oceanside, Carlsbad, Vista, and Leucadia. My five-star rating reflects the quality and taste of their donuts from morning purchases. From other donut shops I sometimes get donuts that are a tad undercooked (they can taste doughy). Other times I get donuts that leave a greasy film in my mouth. I am also put off by donuts that leave me with a heavy feeling not entirely related to how many donuts I've consumed--as though the oil had started to turn rancid or something. I like Sam's because, time after time (and I've eaten their donuts on dozens of occasions) instead of any of these complaints I experienced fresh light donutty goodness. Let me comment on the observation that the selection in the display cases is not extensive: sad, but true. But don't worry! If at first you don't see what you want, ask for it! I once ordered 18 dozen donuts at Sam's at 7:00am, and was disappointed when I saw the limited variety on display. But to my amazement, 18 boxes were brought from the kitchen, full of a wide variety of donuts, including many not on display. I can't account for this, but thought you should know. Sam's Boston Cream donuts are especially popular with my peeps. The maple bars, jelly donuts, glazed donuts, glazed old fashioned, and twists also seem to go fast. Surprisingly to me, their plain cake donuts also get chosen first. The people that run Sam's are Khmer, and the younger generation are more comfortable with English than the older; if you need to communicate something beyond the basics and aren't getting through, just ask to speak with someone else. Sam's Donut Shop accepts debit cards and major credit cards. Bottom line: Sam's Donut Shop is my first choice for donuts. read more

I love this place. Pretty sure it's related to "Pams" over by the Food-4-Less on Melrose but I prefer the donuts here a bit. The staff is always friendly (often tossing in a few extra donut holes w/ orders for regular customers) and the donuts rock. I've never noticed any odd smells (as someone noted below). It's definitely a place to go early since donuts do sell out but I love them - absolutely love the donuts at this place. Have been going there at least once or twice a month since I moved to Vista two years ago. Never a problem. I don't usually use Yelp on my PC (and I don't think you can review on mobile) but when I saw the unfair negative reviews I felt the need to put my .02 in. Went in here the other day because of convenience but they were out of all the basics and the woman kept swinging her hand inside the donut container then we noticed there were bees in there. Why so many bad reviews? Ive come here a couple times to pick up donuts for work because its conveniently located across the street. The latest I've been here is 9:00 am and the donuts are still fresh. I dont understand why people are complaining about the quality...? They are pretty darn good, and my coworkers have never complained. They actually make a tasty french twist donut, which is my favorite, and none of the donut shops near my home (that Ive discovered ) make a decent one. There are some homeless people around there in the morning, they don't bother anyone. Instead of some of you reviewers being afraid of them, buy them a donut. They have come in the shop to get coffee and the lady behind the counter treated them with respect which is more than I can say for some people. If I could give negative stars I would, consider this rating as a NEGATIVE ONE STAR. Possibly one of the WORST customer service demonstrations I have ever encountered! I recently moved into the area and wanted a quick breakfast. It was my first time here. I told my boyfriend I wanted a coffee and a breakfast bagel sandwich. A few minutes later the lady called out two numbers and I assumed it was my order. I walk up and she says "Are you #9 or #10?" I honestly did not know because my boyfriend had placed the order so I said "I don't know." She then said in a condescending tone, "No you aren't so then this is not yours."
