Came here on a Saturday mid-afternoon for lunch. Walked into a bright, clean looking space. Being first time customers we just stood there staring at the menu board for awhile, then the guy behind the counter offered help with suggestions. What immediately turned me off was that while explaining the popular sandwich choices, he proceeded to lift his cap and started scratching the back of his head. No big deal, except he was wearing those plastic gloves while doing so. I watched as he made sandwiches with those same gloves. (should I have? or was it my place to tell him to change gloves?). Also watched the lady in back scratching her neck with gloves on. What's going on here??? -2 for a need of proper food handling/safety training. The other strange thing was there were 6-7 employees working on a Saturday afternoon with sparse customers. Meatball and pastrami sandwiches were just okay. Nothing really special, but they're large sandwiches. The fountain drinks are large and a deal for $1.50. Plenty of free parking in the new plaza but the other new retail spaces haven't opened for business yet. I have to give this place an Average rating for average sandwiches. I just want to say i gave this place a real shot...came here 3 times and each time I left feeling meh. The customer service is okay. The first visit I ordered their Turkey sandwich with cranberry and cream cheese on dutch. It was okay nothing really to rave about. Came here for lunch on a weekday and surprisingly, there was no wait! I really wanted to try the tri-tip, but that's only a Wednesday special. Instead, I went with the King Louie and thought it was just ok. The sandwich itself was very mediocre. The ratios weren't that great, there was only 1 layer of honey ham next to a thick chicken patty. Adding a couple more slices of honey ham or cheese would give the sandwich more flavor since it was quite bland. The portions here are decent, I got the regular and was only to finish half. If you want something for filling, go for the bigger option, hungry size? starving size? Sandwiches here are fine, but nothing special. It's tucked away in a developing area of Foster City remiscent of the whole Santana Row concept in SJ. If you can order online or on the phone during lunch hour, I'd highly recommend it to alleviate wait time. Sandwiches come in half or full orders. Oinkers like me need a full order though. The Roasted Rascal was quite a delicious mess of roast beef, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onion, cream cheese and their Safari Sauce between two soft sourdough rolls. When I say mess, it means the condiments mostly. They slather them on generously. It can turn everything else soggy if you don't tell them to go light. If you've got a sweet tooth, they have quite an extensive selection of It's It's- more than I've ever seen. They have specials on the board for certain days of the week. I'd definitely come back and try another sandwich if not make my own off their "Drawing Board". Next time I will have them take it easy on the condiments though. read more

I ordered a small Monkey Business (#7) and for $12.50 you would think you'd get an average-sized sandwich (I know I ordered a small but just hear me out). Well, it was a sandwich made for a 3-year-old with plain mayo, a tiny bit of turkey, red onions, measly lettuce and bacon and NOT for an adult who's just a little hungry! The guy who took my order wasn't friendly at all (borderline rude). I asked him which sandwich he recommended and the dude recommends the WORST one (smh!). He should have just recommended I leave and not waste my money and I would have gladly done that instead! Tried this for the first time yesterday and was not disappointed! I'm a huge sandwich lover, so any time I can try somewhere new it's pretty exciting. It took a couple of minutes just to look over the menu; they have a lot of options! I went with the angry monkey which had grilled chicken, jalapenos, peppercinis, lettuce and cheese. It comes with safari sauce which was really good and added flavor to my sandwich. I wish it came with tomatoes though. The downside is that I came during my work lunch and it seemed like the time it took to make the sandwiches was a little too long. I love the BBQ Bonanza....cheese...beef....toasted. What's not to love? The sandwiches are expensive but especially if you get the large sandwich ("starving"), it's enough to have for two meals and ends up being a pretty good bargain. I typically order online since I like to customize my sandwich (it's easier than verbally having to tell the cashier my high maintenance requests) and it's convenient to swing by to grab your pre-made sandwich. On frequent occasions, Sandwich Monkey (SM), has been the go to meal for company lunches, Toastmaster lunches, and for my personal lunch. Overall, there sandwiches are tasty; I can only speak for the veg sandwiches, but all of my coworkers have seemed pleased with the selection. Kinda mediocre considering the great sandwich options around like Ike's and Mr. Pickles. The King Louie wasn't bad but the Dutch crunch leaves a lot to be desired in terms of crunch and flavor. The real problem though, was the tuna melt. Rather than griddling the sandwich to give it a nice rich crust while melting the cheese, the toast the whole thing open faced and then slap the sucker together. This results in a thick layer of hardened cheese that doesn't congeal to the bread at all. If you're not going to griddle a tuna melt, don't bother making one. read more

A very bland sandwich on some good dutch crunch. The lettuce in the sandwich was actually more flavorful than the turkey itself. I would love to write something positive about the food, but I honestly cannot think of anything. The sandwich was just not satisfactory, and at $8.75, I expected a lot more. Overall, my first and second experiences here were just not satisfactory. First visit ordered a Harvest Monkey. This was severely lacking in flavor. The bread is fresh and the meat is good quality, but I don't think they put enough meat or sauce on their sandwiches. Second time had the king Louie. Thought since it has two meats -chicken patty and ham it would be more hearty. The chicken patty is flavorless and not good quality and two slices of ham didn't make up for it. This was alright, not great. I ordered a Caesar salad to begin, and while the salad was good, the croutons were very squishy and chewy, rather than crunchy. I ordered the Italian sandwich and while all the meats and cheese were good, the Dutch Crunch bread was lacking crunch. The same went for my girlfriend's sandwich, which was also on the non-crunchy Dutch Crunch bread. She also asked for her sandwich to be toasted and it was not toasted. This is a terrible place. Skip it; for several reasons: 1. The long lines. OK. I get it...they are the only reasonable place in Foster City. Hire more people, improve your processes....do whatever you have to do. 30 minutes is TOO LONG to wait for a sandwich. 2. The Skinny: What I Ordered: The Veggie Sandwich #11 on Gluten Free Bread Serving size: Just O.K., due to choosing the gluten-free sandwich bread. They try to make up for the significant lack in size by stacking the sandwich as much as possible, but I wasn't entirely satisfied afterwards. Taste: higher quality than your big chain sandwich shop (think Subway) Price: Same as the Hungry size - ABSURD the gluten-free bread is SIGNIFICANTLY smaller than the rest of the Hungry-sized breads, and stacking the sandwich just didn't make up for that absurdity. I deal with this dietary-discrimination at so many shops and this is what really impacted my decision to give this shop 2 stars. The sandwich tasted great, but I was really emotionally struck that they expected me to pay the same price when I was clearly receiving less than others. I actually cried when the cashier told me that! It is so difficult to find GOOD food that is gluten and dairy free, since the shop advertises itself as offering gluten and dairy free options I really got my hopes up coming here, and they just didn't deliver on their promise. read more
