Coming from San Francisco, I hold high expectations for my pho, and this was my first bowl in Dallas. Of course I ordered the usual, large size of beef pho. The dish came fairly quickly in a big bowl. The size of the bowl and the speed are two important factors. Also, the amount of the meat. The beef balls were yummy, I wish there were more of them. Visiting Dallas for a long weekend, and yelped what was close to our hotel. Cue up the app - and it brought us to Sapa house. This place was awesome, and had a great happy hour menu which I'm always a sucker for. Being pregnant I couldn't take advantage of the drinks, but luckily they had some tasty food items to choose from as well. We decided to try the dumplings, egg roll, and the fried octopus balls - which were all so tasty! After devouring that fairly fast, we split the chicken fried rice as the portion was massive. A cute touch - on the menu they offer dog food options if you are dining outside with your pet. I hope nobody has bad experience like I had at this place today. The owner refused to give us one more table because we have more people in our family that came in than we expected. We were standing waiting for a long time but they seated people that came after us. And the owner was drunk and said:" I don't need customers. Customers need me, so leave or stay but we won't give you another table or chairs for your family". I was scared. The owner was so drunk and mean. I've been here a couple of times now during lunch. The first there was about a 15 minute wait but we did get there at noon (peak lunch time). So the next time we went we made it a point to get there a bit earlier since there was also 6 of us. They have seating mainly for 1-4 people. They can accommodate maybe two larger groups at their community table seating. Ok now for the food. The egg rolls get 10 stars! Absolutely delicious. I even had an order for dessert. So far I've had the shaken beef and shrimp pad thai. Both were really good and tasty. Others had the grilled chicken, vegetable pho and no one had a complaint. Yeah, it was fine. I wasn't impressed either way with Sapa House, but we got our food fairly quickly and I didn't get food poisoning. In step with other downtown establishments, their food was overpriced. While portion size appeared large due to the giant dinner plates they use, the actual food -- and the conspicuous lack of some key ingredients on it -- didn't fill enough space. I got the bun thit nuong (vermicelli with pork) for $10ish, and it really did feel more like a noodle salad than it did noodles with meat and some vegetables. The vermicelli was cooked correctly, but the dish itself lacked the accoutrements that go with a good bun dish, like Thai basil and mint. The fish sauce had a strange flavor to it, as if someone had put too much sugar into the mix. Same for the grilled pork, which was plentiful but again, too sweet and cooked too tough. Aside from this, the vegetables were very fresh, and a nice palate cleanser considering all the greasy and deep-fried foods I had in Dallas. I didn't find our service extraordinary either, but we didn't get screamed at, which is a plus in my book. I think the problem with Sapa House is that they try too hard to fuse Asian flavors and have a ton of Asian foods on the menu. I can't speak for the Japanese dishes on the menu because I didn't try them, but I highly doubt I'll be back to try them. read more

I found this place after I was craving pho. I decided to go for lunch on a Monday (12pm). You could tell it was a popular place for local jobs - there were a lot of large groups or a lot of work-related tables. Even though the restaurant was packed, the waiter did a good job getting to us soon after we were seated. We did have to wait a little longer than I was expecting for the pho, but nothing unreasonable. I had the small chicken pho which was the perfect size for lunch. The large bowl is significantly larger but seems to just have more broth in there. Otherwise the flavor of the pho was phenomenal. I wasn't sure what to expect for pho in Dallas but it was absolutely delicious. I would definitely go back again soon for some more pho! read more

I went to Sapa House for dinner on a Tuesday. I was alone and just wanted a quick bite. Once I got there I realized they had Happy Hour pretty much all day on Tuesday! So I pretty much ordered some of items from the Happy Hour menu. I got the pork skewers, edamame, tuna tataki and one of the rolls (I can't remember the name). Also a glass of red wine. The food was ok. The skewers were a bit dry but tasted good, the tuna tataki was flavorful with the lime but weird texture and the roll had a weird flavor to it - but hey, it was fried! Everything is better when fried. The edamame was good! The lady serving me forgot about the wine, unfortunately. The place has a nice atmosphere and outdoor seats so it is definitely a cool place for Happy Hour. Overall it is a good place but maybe not the best choice for japanese. read more

Sapa House was very disappointing. It had a great look from the outside. So, I was hopeful. We started with the egg rolls and some sashimi. The egg rolls weren't bad, probably the best thing we had. The sashimi was not great. The rice didn't taste right, like it didn't have enough vinegar. We got the takoyaki, which was a let down. The octopus was overcooked and each piece was very doughy. There was so much sauce. It was basically sauce and dough. We didn't stay for more than appetizers. The cocktails also did not lool good. I would not return. Let's definitely change the hours of the restaurant if you're going to put whether to sit people or not up to a crowd vote between the servers. First time walking into a restaurant during operating hours looking to be seated, only for the bartender to go up to servers who apparently told her we couldn't be seated. We were definitely hungry for the cuisine, specifically drove to Sapa House, and there weren't many other options nearby with similar. As a former restaurant server, I definitely get the hesitation to take guests just before close. However, the place was still almost jam-packed​, meaning clearly quite a few people were still going to be there well after close, and we (a party of two) were planning to get just a few quick items we already had in mind and dash as soon as we were done. Had no idea we'd be turned away at 9:45, it was the fastest we could get there. If you're going to be downtown in a major city where people have to find parking away from the door and all that, the least you could do is stick to your posted hours. I absolutely love this place. It's such a cute place with a wood contemporary look, perfect for a girls night or date night. I went to a happy hour with the girls last night and we just about ordered everything on the happy hour menu. They are very transparent with their prices (can be found on their website) and happy hour on Monday is all dayyy. I can't wait to go back and try more of the food. The pork skewers were so rich and the salmon sushi roll was a steal for $6.50. My mouth is watering just thinking about it! Only downside is parking of course, but it's downtown. Note that panko means crumbs so if you are being healthy maybe avoid this one. This place is having an identity crisis. Vietnamese AND Japanese AND Thai food? The downtown / uptown Asian 'fusion' restaurant scene causes unintentional eyerolling, but this combo cannot be even more mismatched and far-stretched. I tried the beef pho broth and thought it lacked flavor (needs more star of anise and less dilution) but at least wasn't fatty. It had a good amount of meat too. Stopped by this place on a trek around downtown Dallas. Now there are a lot of good and cheap Vietnamese restaurants in Dallas, and if you are just concerned about price, this place is a bit more money than the normal Vietnamese restaurant. But... The food here is a whole level above most of those places. The Sapa Grilled Pork was phenomenal! I was expecting the normal fish sauce grilled pork, but dang was this surprisingly good. It had hints of lemongrass and fish sauce but there was a level of detail that is hard to describe. The char on the meat was meticulously calculated to give it just the right amount of crunch and savory, bitters that you expect in a fine steak. The Pork Ear was amazing too! They made it the traditional way you make fried fish with all the spices, but with pork ear it had a chew in it that was addicting. Paired with a beer during happy hour and you have a winning combination. The Pho was good too. I have had better broth, BUT homemade Pho is always going to be better and I am super picky. That being said, the Pho broth was flavorful enough as to not need anything, AND I would venture out again to try out their other Pho. The meat though was top quality meat. Probably some of the best quality meat in Pho I have had around here. Lastly the ambience and service were amazing. On a cool day, this is a spot you could hang with your friends for a few hours. I love Vietnamese food as much as Korean. So, I was excited to try Sapa House. I wasn't disappointed. I had the Sapa Eggrolls with Mango Mayo because I am allergic to seafood. They were very happy to substitute the sauce for any dish. Great thing is they are mindful if you notify them of any allergies. A lot of places aren't! Our server was very nice but a little busy so we only saw him when he cleared our plates and brought the check. But busy is good! That's when you know a place is good when it's so full of people your servers are swamped. The prices are moderate but the portions are huge. Especially the Phone! The small bowl was huge!
