Scratch Baking is my all time favorite bakery, and I've lived in OH, MI, NY, NJ and now CT!!! The owner, bakers, and staff are friendly and greet the regulars by name. There are too many fabulous goodies to pick a favorite, though note the chocolate croissants are flaky and melt in your mouth, and WARM when you arrive around 7:30-8am in the morning. Perfect product, quality is the name of the game here at this bakery. I take customer reviews very seriously. Glad I tasted. My vegan bar and croissant, delicious. No comparison to any other bakery item I've tried here in Ct or anywhere. I did ask the owner, via e-mail, to please consider not putting each individual item in a big white bag. 4 items, 4 bags. Scratch Baking is our neighborhood bakery, and in addition to our love of visiting them frequently for breakfast pizza, and their offerings at the weekly farmer's market, we loved having their desserts at our wedding. My husband and I were married at the New Haven Lawn Club in June 2017 and couldn't imagine using anyone else for our dessert needs. We didn't want to opt for the traditional wedding cake, so we ordered ten different bite-sized desserts and an apple crumb pie for our 'pie cutting.' Our guests LOVED the dessert options, and we couldn't be happier. Leslie and her team take such care in their craft, and even brought back an item they stocked during Easter for us, just because we needed it at the wedding (the carrot cake cookie is so good!). I'm really fond of Scratch Baking. Not only is everyone there really nice and accommodating, they have a great product. There aren't many places in the immediate area where you can get freshly-baked artisan breads, so I love them for that. I also really enjoy their other baked goods, especially their scones, brownies, chocolate croissants, and oatmeal cookies. I appreciate their seasonal specials and I really haven't had anything there that wasn't delicious. Their prices are pretty average for the area, which is to say not cheap, but you won't have to sell your house to buy a loaf of bread, either. They do have a $5 credit/debit minimum, but they will let you slide if you're close--they won't deny you because you ring up at $4.99 like some places will. Scratch is a great addition to downtown Milford and well-worth a visit. read more

Don't get me wrong this place knows how to bake! I've had the breakfast pizza which was great but also cold.I then asked to have the quiche warmed up and was informed that i would have to wait 8 minutes for the ovens to be warmed up. This was at about 1130 am. My biggest problem is that i have made three trips to Scratch. Each time was a different employee. All three were extremely rude, I felt rushed, as if I was supposed to know my order before i walked in. No smiling, helpful suggestions or descriptions of what was fresh that day.. Amazing bread. Brownies are insane. Breakfast pizza is perfect - doesn't need to be heated - and you're lucky if you get there in time before it is sold out, because it's that good. Delicious quiche, coffee, muffins..."Cinnamon Schmear Scone". Staff is the friendliest. Did I mention they are very charitable as well? I love, love love Scratch. I try to find excuses to go there as many times a week as possible. Their croissants are fantastic. So buttery and so flaky. I get their honey flax bread every week. Their iced coffee is also so tasty. It is from a local company and has no bitterness. It reminds me of my favorite coffee from San Francisco Blue Bottle Roasters. I just wish I could get baked goods and coffee there every day. It's worth a visit! read more

We are long time customers and we have always enjoyed your food, but lately the pastries have had a really horrible metalic aftertaste... especially the monkey bread and bread pudding. My husband is a chef and the first one to notice the taste... it is really off-putting. Perhaps it's time to either change your pans or line them with something? read more

I have to say I love Scratch Baking not to mention Alex and Leslie have always been accommodating. I do love their chocolate croissants and on occasion will buy one. Their breakfast pizza, yum, yum, yum! an assortment of toppings, veggies, veggie sausage, spinach, pesto, various cheeses, etc. to please everyone's palate. I hope in the future they can make a variety without the eggs, they would be just as delicious! This bakery as the name states, makes everything from scratch and that's something to appreciate especially when you have so many processed desserts on the market that I myself would not go near given the fact that they use high fructose corn syrup which no one should consume in high amounts anyway. I will end my review with treat yourself, friends, family, and patronize this wonderful neighborhood bakery along with their staff that work so hard to make life a little sweeter for all of us! read more

I've been in love with scratch since Lesli was just operating a booth at the farmer's market. I bought some open faced pie things and then tried to re-create them and mine were not as yummy. When I ran into her again and we discussed this, she identified my mistake (I'd used a tart crust NOT a pie crust) and steered me straight to homemade deliciousness town. HOWEVER, despite my love of baking there are times when one does not feel up to it. Those times are frequent when there is so much outstanding deliciousness within close proximity to home & the train station. The breakfast sandwiches, the breakfast pizza, the creme brulee, the eclairs, the croissants! Basically I am in love with everything this place produces. And their ciabatta bread is a pillowy loaf of magic, never mind the honeyflax bread which is clever and sweet and unassuming. Marry me, scratch baking! Three strikes and your out!!! It's such a shame because the quality and presentation of the food is excellent. Service, on the other hand, is lack luster at best. Out of 3 separate visits, I observed 1 sole employee (a young man) that seemed happy working there assisting customers with a smile. Unfortunately, he was not the one that took care of me. I literally waited 20 minutes for a toasted bagel with butter this morning. There was no sense of urgency at all. I had to ask what is taking so long??? A mistake had been made in the preparation of the bagel (which is ok) however, I would not have known had I not asked. Mind you, at least 5 customers that came after me were dispatched while I was waiting for said bagel. It almost seems as if they believe they are doing the customer a favor... NOT! Exemplary customer service should be corollary to the pricey menu. I visited late one afternoon a few months back and observed the same "lack luster," non-friendly customer service. A humble recommendation to the owner: send in some customers in disguise to see first hand how customer service could be improved. Then quickly follow up with some serious customer service training. In summary, the service should match the top quality of the products presented. read more

Phenomenal Bakery! Everything from there is excellent. The cream puffs are a personal fav but honestly everything is so fresh and delicious. Scratch is much better than the other bakeries around that are focused on production rather than quality. The prices are reasonable when compared to other bakeries of this standard (i.e. Sono Banking Co.). Overall a great place that cares about their product. read more

Wonderful place! Go early for the breakfast pizza which I believe is only Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Wonderful combinations of things such as home fries, egg, and veggies on a crisp crust. I stopped in for the first time the other day as I was in the area. I ordered the salted caramel brownie and a chocolate chip cookie. The staff I dealt with was very pleasant and helpful. The salted caramel brownie was too salty so I couldn't eat it. I like a little salty and sweet but the salt was too strong for me. The cookie was good, nothing to write home about. I did not want to like this Bakery. I've been avoiding it like the plaque because of the impact it would have on my reduced caloric intake aka diet. The Mexican cookies were incredible and the Creme Brulee is waiting for me in the refrigerator. You will not be disappointed! This little gem of a bakery recently opened in the small strip mall on the New York bound side of the Milford train station. They have wonderful baked goods, coffee and tea (a particularly wonderful local boutique brand that I had not heard of and I am addicted to the Chamomile/lavendar). They make fresh bakery items (the smell is delightful) including muffins, scones, biscuits, cookies, cakes and probably anything else on special order. A blueberry muffin was heavenly, with a light moist and fine crumb, a gentle hint of butter in the cake and a good allocation of blueberries. A warm scone (cranberry orange) this morning had a similar light and tender crumb with the orange flavor subtle and fresh and a perfectly crisp outside. Everything does truly taste homemade and right out of the oven; even the granola was great (crispy, slightly sweet with whole nuts and chunks of dried fruit)The shop is open and inviting and has become my morning treat before getting on the train. They are open Saturday and Sunday (closed Monday) and lines have already been seen on the weekend mornings. read more
