Strip clams plate - lots of bland, tasteless food

Oy, this was disappointing over and over again. On the way to a wedding in Cape Cod we stopped at this well rated fish joint. I was happy cause they had fried clams - something no one seems to sell for some bizarre reason in Los Angeles. So I got the clam strips plate. We also had a lobster roll, and a combo plate with fried shrimp and scallops. All I can say is bland, bland, and bland. I mean the lobster roll was okay, but for Massachusetts you expect better. And the fried stuff was flavorless with absolutely zero seasoning. It was like food in an old age home. And as I was thinking this, I looked around and sure enough the two huge rooms were filled with nothing but extremely old and sickly geriatrics. I guess they like the bland food. I was totally unimpressed. I also made the mistake of buying a box of their salt water taffy, which tasted horrible. Really the worst I ever had. I don't think they make it, but whoever they buy it from makes horrible salt water taffy. The whole meal was a bust. Skip it!

3pm on a Monday, not busy at all, which was very good. It is a sit down restaurant but where you have to order at the counter and they will call you when the food is ready. No need to tip in my honest opinion given the prices of the menu. I would expect a lobster dish to be cheaper since I am in Massachusetts but also it is still a lobster dish...so what can I say? Can choose either hot or cold lobster rolls from the menu. We got hot lobster roll regular for $28.99. Jumbo was $50.99 and not knowing how big it is, we settled for the regular size. Lobster roll... was amazing! Clam chowder was even better!!! Although we got the clam chowder bowl at $8.99, it does not come in a bowl, but rather a taller cup, I would say. But the clam chowder was our absolute favorite! This place was overall above our expectations except for the price. I would have given a five star review if the price was a little bit wallet-friendly. I would expect to spend $40-50 per person whereas Google review suggested as $20-30 per person. This may have affected how I am rating this place. Nevertheless, definitely will be back with the mindset of $40-50 per person!

The 4 of us shared: - Jumbo lobster roll (hot): we thought the roll would be bigger too but it seemed that they just add additional lobster. It was good and didn't think it needed additional seasoning, and the roll was buttery and toasted although it fell apart after the first bite. We got this with coleslaw, which was good and not with too much mayo. - The baked platter was generally bland. I wouldn't get this again. The fries were decent. - The fried fish platter was much better. The clam strips and scallops were the best, and generally the breading was thin but crispy. These were on par/better than the Sesuit harbor versions as a comparison, especially the clam strips. The haddock was bland and a little mushy. The shrimp was decent. We got this with the baked potato which we used to scoop up the butter from the baked platter. There's a sauce station, and you clean up after yourself.

Seafood Sam's has two locations in Cape Cod, one in Falmouth and one in Sandwich. I went to the Seafood Sam's in Sandwich, MA. I first joined the queue at the order counter and took a look at the menu. There is a great selection of seafood. After you order, the staff clip the ticket order to the order wheel and slide it to the kitchen. I got a buzzer and then went to find a table. There are plenty of tables inside and outside. When the buzzer rings, you can go to the pickup counter to get your food. My order was ready in 10 minutes. When I was there, there were also 2 big coach busses in the parking lot, but it didn't feel crowded at all. Seafood Sam's is built for big groups, family-friendly, and quick service restaurant. I ordered Sam's Famous Lobster Roll ($27.99). It is cooked one of two ways: as a Cape Cod-style cold lobster salad with lemon mayonnaise or a hot lobster roll with lobster meat poached in butter. I chose the hot lobster roll. Sandwiches come with a pickle spear and your choice of french fries, rice pilaf, coleslaw or Cape Cod Potato Chips. I chose french fries. The hot lobster roll had a good amount of tender lobster meat in a golden-grilled hot dog roll. I enjoyed this lobster roll a lot. The french fries were really crispy. My husband and I shared a 16oz bowl of the Original Recipe Clam Chowder ($8.99). Though there were a lot of clams and potatoes, I think this was watered down and I definitely had better clam chowder. The fountain drink is $2.95 and has unlimited refills. Seafood Sam's is very close to Cape Cod Canal Visitors Center. If you are looking for a stroll after you eat, check out the Cape Cod Canal Visitors Center or sit at one of the many benches along Cape Cod Canal.

Typical Cape Cod fried seafood - but surprisingly efficient You order your meal meal at a counter and pick it up at a different countervehen it is ready. This is a relatively common setup on the Cape. However Seafood Sam's has a large queue area before you order your meal to accommodate tour group buses. We were behind a tour group and the line moved quickly. There are large indoor and outdoor seating areas.

This place reminds me of another basic 90s restaurant where you order food then wait to pick up. The food was cool well but lacked flavor. It was also surprising that the shrimp wasn't cleaned properly (some shrimp poop). The vegetables were steamed and had no flavoring. Well priced, cooked correctly but no spices or flavors.

I don't think this place believes in seasoning. The lobster roll was on the small side, but still lobster. The mac and cheese was a lot of liquid. It gives "fudruckers but seafood" feelings. It's was fine food, but we probably wont return.

What a let down. We were very excited to eat here, in fact in this particular location because of the reviews and we drove up all the way from Falmouth. The scallops and butterfly shrimp in the baked dis we ordered were not super fresh. It had that fishy taste and smell that fresh seafood just doesn't have. It was also not well seasoned. I will say that at least the clam chowder and fries were great. That ended up salvaging our late lunch. It also took about 30 mins for us to get our lunch order which I can understand but it would be good if they would give you a heads up about the current wait time when you place an order. The ambiance is very old-school, like a diner on the coast. Cute decor, we especially liked the Sandwich postcard on the wall.

Mostly typical New England seafood fare. I wasn't in the mood for a big fried platter so I got the fish tacos instead. They were very disappointing. I probably should have got the fried clams or fish+chips instead but I didn't so my rating is based only on the tacos. The tacos were a culinary chaos of competing flavors. Heaps of shredded cheddar cheese, completely wrong for fried fish (try cojita or queso freso instead). Mango "salsa" (really just mango chunks). Lime juice. Remoulade sauce. The fish was large chunks of batter-fried haddock which, because of the thin tortillas (single layer), made eating a difficult and messy process. The flour tortillas were right "out of the package", unimproved by toasting or sauteeing. The fries were ok but a little "off". Fairly crisp but greasy not in a good way. The coleslaw was the best of the three: a little sweet, not too mayonnaisey, no oversize tough pieces of cabbage. The process is order at the board, get a beeper, pick up at the counter when ready. No table service. Not my preferred way but not unusual and not a reason to dock any stars. But when the receipt shows only suggested tips of 18, 20, and 22%, that's a reason. I'm not self-conscious about adjusting suggested tips when appropriate so I changed it to the appropriate 10%. Then I discovered we're expected to clean up too! A sign explaining how to do this was unnecessarily sanctimonious. ("It's just how we roll!") Scrape the food into the waste bin, put the silverware here, the trash there, and stack the trays there. Not easy scraping the plates into the small hole provided, and I may have lost a fork. I did the best I could, annoyed that I hadn't changed the tip to 0%, completely acceptable for no table service. There was no obvious way to clean the table so I left crumbs and spills. Hopefully somebody comes by to clean once in a while but I didn't see anybody while I was there. My table was clean when I arrived however. Not worth a return. But if it does happen I'd get something different for sure.

Growing up near the water I've been to lots of clam shacks and seafood restaurants and this is one of the best. We went to a late lunch at the Sandwich location and found a table right away. It's self serve and we waited about 15-20 minutes for the food because it is cooked to order. We shared the haddock plate, scallop plate and onion rings. Big portions and even though it's fried nothing was greasy. It almost had a tempura quality. Prices were reasonable. Every item was fresh and perfectly cooked. A must for every future trip to the Cape! read more

OMG! Delicious fried sea scallops and haddock combo plate with coleslaw and baked beans. My wife had the broiled haddock with steamed veggies and baked potatoes. We chased down our entrees with two different local draft brews. Amazing fresh seafood and veggies in an unpretentious atmosphere. You order at the counter and they buzz you when your meals are ready. Everything is cooked to order. They have a full service bar (where you can also get food service if you don't want to order at the counter). If you like fresh seafood this is a great find. They also have other things, buy hey, it's called Seafood Sam's for a reason. read more

Ouch!! Buyer beware We were hungry for fish. We enjoy this restaurant for fried clams but tonight was a huge disappointment. FROZEN FISH! We ordered the baked haddock plate and it was watery and mushy. We asked if was frozen and they said YES!!! A seafood restaurant serving frozen fish. Is there anything on the menu not frozen except clams?? Head to a restaurant that serves fresh fish. read more

I thought it would be great and it was just okay. I had the fish and chips and the fish was pretty mediocre actually. My friend had the fish chowder, which was excellent, and the kids fish n chips and her fish bites seemed more appealing than my big piece of fish. The location was nice and the interior typical for a big fish place. The prices were reasonable. Is go back for the chowder and might try a different fish next time. read more

We are camping in the area and needed a location that would allow us to bring our dogs. We called in advance and they had no issues with us bringing our dogs outside. Set up is very casual and clean. You walk up to the counter to order. They had desserts on display made from a bakery in Boston. Apparently, since it isn't lobster season we couldn't have a whole steamed lobster. We did have fried lobster instead, it was good but portions of the claws were chewy. We don't know what is normal for fried lobster, so we still enjoyed it. We really enjoyed Seafood Sam's! The cashiers were friendly and helpful with the menu. It's an order and pick up place - no waiters which we didn't mind! The hot lobster roll lacked some flavor, but the cold lobster roll was refreshing and delicious. The clam chowder was a bit underwhelming and heavy, but the lobster bisque was so yummy. We loved the fried clam strips plate & sides that were included. We felt everything was fairly priced compared to other restaurants in the area. Dog friendly patio was a plus & a beautiful sunset view! Would definitely recommend. read more

Came here Mother's Day late afternoon and sat at the bar. (Only place where you can get served. Or it's To-go, find a table or take home.) Got fried scallops, clams, clam chowder, onion rings, French fries. We are picky on chowder. It was ok. Rest of meal would have been excellent if served hot. It was just barely warm. Would have sent it back but had already waited 30 minutes. Service at bar was friendly and efficient, ambiance was very busy with takeout orders. This place is a chain restaurant that you order your food for eating in or takeout. It's a casual setting close to the water but not directly on it. My lobster roll was tasty and reasonable at 24.99. We have been loyal Seafood Sam's patrons since first discovering it while vacationing on the Cape several years ago. Loyal to the point of eating lunch and dinner there on the same day so we are sure to get our fill to hold us over until our next visit. We've always had an excellent experience; any bumps in the road were managed quickly and the food is always delicious. When vacationing elsewhere (Virginia Beach, Baltimore, South Carolina) we lament that it doesn't feel like a trip to the beach without Seafood Sam's. If only they could ship to the Midwest! read more

My favorite lobster roll anywhere. I always plan for a stop here when I need to head over the bridge in season. Sometimes we dine in, sometimes we get takeout. It's always good. I also enjoy the mixed drinks, often the creation of the bartender. read more

I've been to Seafood Sam's in Sandwich a dozen times, they always have great food, quick service, and good drinks from the bar if you want them. It's nothing fancy, so you do not need to be dressed up and it's great for large groups! After you eat, there's a good spot to see the bridge down by the canal. We go every year, no matter what season we visit the cape! read more

Yum! I had a fried clam basket recently off their food truck while at Treehouse Brewery. It was a nice portion size of perfectly fried golden clams with lots of bellies. They tasted very "clean" - sometimes I like to taste the ocean in my seafood, if you know what I mean. Overall these were great and I would definitely order them again! read more

This place was our go to when we stayed a few minutes away over the summer. There were 5 adults and a toddler, so we appreciated how quickly the food came out and how there was something for everyone. I think we ate here 3 or more times and appreciated the patio and abundance of high chairs. The menu is so huge that I was overwhelmed trying to pick something! The seafood platters are huge portions and the lobster bisque was delicious. I also liked the self service drinks and condiments and everything was very clean. Would definitely recommend and come back on our next trip to Cape Cod read more

After a long 6-ish hour drive, I decided to stop by here for a quick dinner. Nothing like some fried clam strips, clam chowder and fish & chips to welcome you back to the Cape! Seafood Sam's was quick, easy & delicious. They have some outdoor seating but plenty of indoor seating as well for families with kids. They also have a nice bar area if you want to watch a game and enjoy your meal. They have a huge menu but all the food I ordered here was fresh, crunchy, savory and looking forward to trying more items on the menu the next time I return. read more

I used to live on the Cape and visited Seafood Sam's many times. The food was okay and the restaurant is located right by the canal in a nice area. Here's the problem with this place, they charge essentially the same prices as a sit down seafood restaurant but their business model is basically fast food. Most everything you get here is fried. For the same price, you can go to a nice sit down place like the Lobster Trap in Bourne, and get fresher food. I stopped coming here once I realized that fact. read more

Perfect pit stop for when you want that seafood fix as soon as you get on the Cape. We stopped here for a quick dinner on our way to Orleans. We ordered ahead and our meal was hot and ready when we arrived. Perfectly light, crisp and delicious whole belly clams, fried native scallops and onions rings. Wish they had better (homemade) drink options but overall this was exactly what we wanted. Half an hour later and we were satisfied and back on our way. There are plenty of seating options; bar, indoor dining, outdoor tables or picnic tables on the grass. Something for everyone. The setting on the water with the sunset sky was a bonus. Yum. Would stop here again. read more

Amazing seafood. The salmon bites are a secret menu item and they won't always have them but they are to die for so yummy. The service is good. The seating is clean and the restaurant has that classics cape for feel. It's the perfect place for dinner your first night on the cape read more

Food, service, atmosphere. Don't get me wrong the people working were trying hard but the level of food and pace they were expected to work with just made everything poor. We had the broiled seafood platter for one. Smallest scallops and lobster claws (cray fish maybe?). All just poor. Also had some sort of lobster soup of some sort? I don't even know what that was. If I could I would give it a 10! I have been living in the Cape the majority of my years and eat at seafood Sam's often. Their seafood is always fresh with some of the best prices around. The restaurant is ALWAYS clean and orderly. It is often busy but even if it is they have their service down to a science. read more

If you're really taking the whole vacation thing to heart and want to stuff your face with as much fried food as possible, Seafood Sam's is for you. I came back home for the first time and years, and I had an insatiable urge for a Fisherman's Platter. For those who don't know, the Fisherman's Platter is an entire wharf of small fish that is deep fried and laid to rest on a grave of fries. It is an entire bag of flour, poured all over whatever Sam can find in the water that day. I decided that I don't have it in me to take down the entire FP that day, so I just went for a haddock and full belly clam platter. If you get just the clam strips and NOT fully belly, you are making a major mistake. That's just a novice seafood eater move in general. When the belly is deep fried, it has a chewy, crunchy, and almost briny mixture all in one bite. Even though we took the food to go and brought it back home, it was still pretty good. It's definitely meant to be eaten there, and they now have a whole parking lot area with spread out tables that you can eat on. Sam is keeping it safe for his patrons, and still slangin' that salty seafood. read more

With so many options around the canal area, just go to Sams. Super fresh, not overly fried or greasy, and great services and prices. Their style is fast casual- order at the counter and pick up when your buzzer rings. The interior is not fancy (little dated) but spacious and clean. They also have a good amount of outdoor seating with views of the canal. The Tuesday special lobster roll was a cold salad style roll dressed with mayo and lemon on a toasted roll. Huge pieces of lobster that was super sweet and delicious. The fried haddock sandwich was huge and came with tartar sauce, lettuce, and tomato. Also perfectly cooked and super fresh. The french fries were perfectly crispy as well. Highly recommend if you're looking for a good casual seafood joint! read more

5 stars for the fish chowder (not clam), full of huge chunks of fish and not too thick/creamy or salty. Just perfect. The grilled salmon entree was also fresh and delicious-- perfect. Established in 1975.

Sam started selling fried local seafood in 1975. Forty years later we still have not strayed from this philosophy. We still buy all our seafood fresh daily from local dealers, we use only the freshest ingredients in everything we make. This is how we have thrived in a very tough business for more than forty years!!

Meet the Business Owner: Jeffrey L.

I started working for Sam in 1975 as a young teenager, I worked my way up from dishwasher to prep cook to manager. Sam retired in 1996 at which time I became the owner. I gave her my credit card and she put it through. Then came up to me to tell me she had forgotten to put the four dollar fee on everyone's plate so she dumped $32 on mine. In an upscale restaurant, this would not have happened.. I wrote to the owner after my meal, telling him my thoughts, and he never bothered to get back. Unacceptable so that is the reason why I was forced to write this review. Find another place

Excellent food, i searched for a seafood place around us while on vacation in Sandwich and this place was really great. Located by the canal, prices are good, only down was not a waiter service since this was our first time we kind of got little confused when we got at the restaurant, didnt know if i could seat myself or wait, didnt know if someone would take our order at the table.
