As a bar half of what you come for is atmosphere And when I came here I felt extremely uncomfortable and it was such a rude experience I left. I can yesterday with my BF and had a 8:00 reservation we made it there and when we checked in with a women say the bar and she said we missed our 15 minutes grace period and she had to give away our table.Now I'm a VERY understanding person but and rules are rules we were late... it was 8:17. Two minutes. It probably took that long to get her attention at the bar! She was super curt and walked away from us as soon as she said she gave up our table. Didn't even recommend We stay or anything just sorry can't help. But no worries! We don't argue or anything just decide we can just chill at the bar. Now... when try And order at BAR we ask bad tender and I tried to order without skipping a beat he looks at me and says "I'm serving the entire bar." Well not with that attitude sir! Look dude I know I probably asked the wrong guy. But there is a polite way of taking to people. Don't make people feel like is inconvenient to be there. Both employees made me feel that way and so I cut my losses and left. The bar is SLOW and you still act this way? No thanks. My night was saved ACROSS THE STREET! The restaurant is Hawaii themed so the ambiance is definitely a vibe once entering the restaurant. To me at first though it seemed sketchy because the restaurant was down stairs in front of shanans but once you start eating the food and drinking some tiki drinks then everything starts getting better. The drinks were so good. And the food overall rate was a 8/10 this was a great first time experience. As for service the server could have a better greeting. I give 5 stars to the entrance! I love the hidden entry way and the thunder and the secret door. When you walk in the bar is right there and the special blue color for the bar is a nice add on! I like the island burger vibes seating and the live music as long as they change the live music lol so I'll give this establishment a 4 star! There was like 5-6 ppl there and I like how it wasn't crowded! You could feel the air. No pressure. read more

Tried this place on a Sunday, and had a lovely time. The staff was attentive, the food was tasty and the live music was a great surprise (great musicians, it was a real treat!). Super chill vibe. Awesome customer service! Gottah love a good bar But a tiki speakeasy bar just makes all the difference. From the bartenders to the staff working there you get a nice welcome or a hello. The ambiance there is spectacular we simply enjoyed every minute there and can't wait to go back. The floors were sticky (I had to pry my foot off the floor after standing in one place for too long), the menus were coated in grime and sugar, the pineapple fried rice was so glutenous that it stuck to the spoon, the piña colada tasted like melted plastic, the Sea Foam cocktail tasted like bubblegum and salt. read more

Cool location, however the service is soooo sloooow, took 15 minutes for us to be initially greeted, then we put our order in, it was 6 drinks and it took 35 minutes for us to get them. After 20 minutes we were about to just walk out but then we made a game of betting how much longer it would take. The worst part was that they weren't even busy. They were at about 50% occupancy. Also was not a fan of the blinking purple Christmas lights above our table. I will say the drinks did taste delicious but not worth waiting over half an hour for. This tiny place is hard to find the first time you come, but it's super fun. The Hawaiian / tiki theme that permeates the whole place immediately relaxes me. The food was tasty (if a little pricey), and we had fun doing a little swing-dancing while a rockabilly band played. Since the place is so small, there's really no place to dance, but we made some room in the corner. Since having bands play appears to be part of the "draw" to this club, it would be nice to have more space to dance. read more

Drinks are strong, sweet, and pricey. Busy bar. Great band and music- but hard to snag a seat. My issue with this place is they charge your card an extra $25 bucks when you keep your tab open...My suggestion to all is to check your bank transactions. This has happened twice already. read more

The only real positives I can share are the ambience/decor and friendliness of some of the staff. I had both the Mai Tai and Lapu Lapu and each was quite underwhelming. I've had many of both in other tiki bars and the lapu lapu was perhaps the worst I've ever had. I've never seen a lapu lapu made without ice...maybe that's their own spin as it's a "Long Beach Lapu Lapu"...but it's a big miss either way. The Mai Tai tastes nothing like a traditional, old school version. Sadly, I can't recommend this place and won't be making another visit. read more

The service is abysmal and sanitation at the bar is sus. They were very understaffed at the bar, myself and others waited at the bar to place a drink order for literally 30 minutes. The bartenders are overwhelmed and except for one, none made eye contact or talked to patrons at the bar - they were hauling to fulfill drink tickets from servers. Bar counters are not clean and the glass washing process leaves a lot to the imagination. After questionable batch soaking/rinsing in the sink at the bar, glasses are turned upside down on the same wet surface next to the sink. read more

I love this place! I enjoy going on their slower Thursday evenings. It's a nice ducked off speakeasy that makes strong drinks and has decent food. Everything is on theme and thursdays is karaoke night so a lot of fun wether you sing or not! We came on a Sunday so it may have been the timing, but everything was batched, including the citrus, making the drinks taste flat and stale, and the bartender would have rather been color coding his sock drawer than serving us. Secret Island is a new tiki bar in Long Beach, located below Shannon's downtown, speakeasy style. The tropical entranceway is nicely done, effective in transporting patrons to a different world. The interior, fashioned by household name Bamboo Ben, is on point. Unfortunately, the libations left a lot to be desired. I came here with three friends, and thus had the opportunity to try 6 different cocktails. Most were candy-sweet, poorly made punches, tasting of artificial fruit juice and cheap rum. Malibu is in heavy rotation, even though the drinks are $17+. I am a rum enthusiast and collector, and feel that our drinks were an insult to my favorite spirit, and the reputation of exotic cocktails. The only drink I enjoyed was the Painkiller. Though it lacked the fresh nutmeg and coconut cream characteristic of this classic cocktail, the use of coconut milk worked to mask the low quality rum. Starving, I ordered the Pineapple Fried Rice, which was edible, but not good. The rice was mushy, and soaked in soy sauce. Secret Island has the potential to be a great bar. They have the location, and local interest. They just need a decent cocktail program, with a director who understands the difference between a Zombie and a Mai Tai. House made syrups. Fresh fruit. Appleton Estate 12 year. Heck, just make recipes from the Smuggler's Cove book. No one will know, and everyone will be happy. read more

THIS PLACE IS THE COOLEST! Biggggg Tiki Bar fan over here, and this is the best one I've been to in terms of atmosphere. It's a speakeasy-style tiki bar - how can you get better than that? We came after dinner so we only got dessert (no drinks). The lava cake is great! Can't speak to anything else on the menu but I'd say it's worth a visit for the atmosphere alone. REALLY FUN SPOT! Just under Shannon's is the incredible Secret Island!! I can't resist getting one of their cocktails, so I had a Sea Foam. It was a beautiful experience! You could taste all the different fruit flavors barely recognizing there is any alcohol in there. It hit the spot! Of course the drink was foamy, it added more texture to it. Love that! My friends got a Zombie and a Dark and Stormy. Zombie was spicy and heavy on the alcohol, you're only limited to 2 per person! Dark and stormy was just right (: They play some good music, too. I was not going to leave a review, especially since this beautiful new tiki bar is still undergoing a soft opening. I promise to come back and give Secret Island a new review once I have gone back and tried it again. But the reason I feel compelled to write a review now is because the single most important thing about a tiki bar is lacking from this place and they need to know so they can fix it: Their drinks are simply disgusting. But I'll get to that in a minute. What they did right: The decor and atmosphere were perfection. So fun. The servers, though overwhelmed because of the full house watching the Hula Girls, were sweet, helpful, and kind. (Though, most were not wearing masks...) They were in the weeds and there didn't seem to be enough of them. They were doing their best and figuring out what needs to be done for next time, which is the point of a soft opening. That was all totally fine. The food we had was ok, but not worth the high prices. But, personally, I don't go to tiki bars to eat (unless it's Bamboo Club cuz their food is AMAZING, but I digress...) I go to tiki bars to drink, thus bringing me back to the point of this review... I guess I need to know who the owner wants to attract with their bar before I complain. They set up shop in downtown Long Beach, so I would assume they want a young party crowd. Fine... then don't change a thing. BUT, they are also going to have bands and music acts like the Hula Girls and fun, classic decor, so that says they want to attract people who are into the tiki scene. If that is the case, you need to step up your drink game. You have to appeal to people who probably know more about rum and classic tiki bartending than your bartenders. Your bartenders have to go to school! (Maybe start them with Trader Vic's Bartender's Guide!) We ordered Zombies and, well, that was no Zombie. It was too heavy on the fruit and sugar and served in the wrong kind of glass. We ordered Mai Tais that were served to us in coupe glasses with no ice. WTF? We ordered two drinks off Secret Garden's own drink menu (Tradewinds and another one I can't remember) and both were just too sweet. Like, gag me with a coconut sweet. My advice: Fill up your menu with classic drinks and follow the CLASSIC recipes (including using the right kinds of glasses.) Then, create and add some of your own recipes and concoctions, but make sure they are balanced. Find someone who knows what they're doing. We will wait a few weeks and try again. read more

with the right mindset this bar is sooo fun and amazing!! i had not found a bar in LB i liked to return to until now. this is my new watering hole haha! the later it gets the busier it gets, so sometimes the bar gets packed up. if you are coming here after 9pm and expect very fast attentive service it wont happen. these waiters do their best to make our drinks beautiful and delicious! it takes time. i suggest if you come, grab your seat and order at the bar. thats if you want faster service. if they got time they will go to your table and take your order. again they get pretty busy and each drink they make they take their time to make it right so please be patient! as for food it is DELICIOUS! anything on the menu is so goood! you need to get down here and see for yourself! read more

This place is incredible! What an experience! This secret, hidden jewel is located below Shannon's, on the corner of Broadway and Pine. From the moment you step downstairs and turn the corner, to approach the venue, the ambiance is set. Immediately, one is transported into a tropical island, far, far away from downtown Long Beach. I don't want to give to much away because you really need to see it for yourself. But trust me, this is a destination spot for anyone who appreciates the tiki culture or Polynesian cuisine. The food presentation is also a work of art. The fried rice was a little spicy but oh so delicious! The staff is all very friendly and the bartenders know their drinks. My bartender made me a delicious, refreshing non-alcoholic beverage that he concocted right on the spot. I could've drank a gallon of it. The venue also has an amazing selection of bands and guest dj's, complete with a dance floor. The stage is lovely and the sound system is top notch. Aloha! This week was the grand opening of this establishment - we booked seats to see the Hula Girls for their 5PM show. The venue itself is very nicely done in "Tiki" and also had great tropical storm sound and light effects. The service was very confused and inefficient, but this is almost to be expected for a brand new restaurant/bar and did not factor into my 3 star rating. We tried two food offerings and both were delicious. Where Secret Island fails to deliver is the quality of their beverages. We had their Zombie and their Painkiller, and both were the worst drinks we have ever had. The Zombie looked and tasted like bottom shelf rum mixed with orange kool-aid, and the unexpectedly clear Painkiller tasted like watered down Malibu rum on the rocks. It's hard to understand the abysmal beverage quality in an area known for some of the finest Tiki bars in the U.S. Such a waste of an otherwise great music venue. I really hope the owners pay attention and get some people who know what they are doing behind the bar and make Secret Island into the 5 star place you expect it to be when you enter. read more

So dissatisfied with the portion size of the food for the price. For the amount you get not worth it . Pain killer wasn't very good but the rum runner was drinks are about 20 bucks . Service was slow . Didn't have the wow effect or make me feel welcome looks like the tables in the middle were arkwardly set there . Paid 20 bucks to get in to only stay 30 min . They did a great job on the decor except they forgot to do the bathroom l. It would all be done tiki style . I'm not sure I'll be back . I would wait till they get their stuff in order .
