Selamta made a great first impression. Ethiopian food is one of my absolute favorites in life, and the options are limited in KC. We've got a handful of decent ones, and I'm delighted to add another to the list. Their meat combination was a delicious introduction to their style. We utterly devoured it all. Flavors were great, and I liked the way they incorporated greens and carrots and potatoes to balance the dishes and add new flavor dimensions. Not every place thinks to do that. They also thoughtfully included crumbled cheese for people who want to curb the spice. Service was quick and nice. Place was busy with folks from all kinds of backgrounds - students, families, sports fans watching football, and lots of Amharic being spoken. That's a great sign. As a newer restaurant, they were not prepared to serve a large party (even though they were well aware ahead of time). There were not enough menus for our party, and it took almost an hour just to get all our (individual) orders. We had to ask questions about the dishes as some had dietary restrictions. The server did not speak enough English to explain the dishes to us as we had hoped. Although the ordering was ill-managed, the staff were very friendly and welcoming. The food took much too long to prepare and serve for a lunch group. The dishes were beautifully prepared but way too much for a lunch portion. All of us took food home. I think the vegetarian dishes were the most pleasing, as those with beef dishes had difficulty chewing. The spices on the veggies dishes were wonderful. Afterwards (about 2 hours later) we went to another room for a coffee ceremony. It was lovely to witness and the roasted Ethiopian coffee beans were aromatic. The food here is absolutely amazing. It had been years since I had tasted Ethiopian food at a restaurant in California, but I had been looking for it again ever since. Selamta's food is just as flavorful as I remember. I could eat here everyday. I do not know much about what each individual meal is called, so I am one to always try combination plates. There is a meat one that is predominantly beef, and a vegetarian option. Unfortunately, I cannot eat beef so I am limited, but my boyfriend and I order both and share. I wish so badly they had a chicken/other protein combination platter as well. It's ok, I am fully able to fill up on what they have to offer. The people who work here are always kind and efficient, and the place has been quiet the three times we have been here. I highly recommend. If you have never had Ethiopian food before, you don't know what you're missing! read more

I was very impressed with this Ethiopian food, especially because we ordered it on DoorDash. The delivery was fast and the food was plentiful and hot and delicious. We chose the vegetarian sampler and could not be more impressed with the selection of eight different veggies and legumes. We also just had to try their take on the Samosa and it was delicious. I could taste some ginger and Cumin lots of good spice and a bit of heat to warm your belly on a cold winter day! Wish I took some pictures, but I was so famished that I ate it up real quick! read more

Very good! My only complaint is the hooka smoke from the bar wasn't what I wanted. We ordered the veggie platter which was AMAZING!! Highly recommended!! We had a great experience trying out Ethiopian cuisine for the first time. I was able to identify a lot of flavors and relate them to the Indian cooking my husband and I happily do at home. The naturally gluten free injera bread is very similar to the South Indian appams. The flavor of every vegetable on the platter was unique without having confused it with too many additives and spices. Every veggie and lentil had a distinct flavor and that stood out for me. My chicken curry looked fantastic and had a drum and an egg in it. The chicken was cooked to perfection and the egg had absorbed all the spice and tasted great but I wish the curry had some more flavor to it. I loved the veggies with injera more than the chicken and I was really surprised at this because I'm a chicken lover. They did not have chicken sambusas so we went ahead and ordered the lentil sambusas. Unfortunately, they did not taste that great as the coating was a bit raw from the folds inside but this did not tarnish the whole experience at all. Our friend decided to take the left over sambusas home to have them with tea. They have nice fruit juices and we loved our mango juice blend. It was refreshing and so good! My husband's fish platter was delicious to the core. That fish was tasty and light and was served with the most amazing mango salad. This salad was sweet, zesty, tangy and had small pieces of red onion in it and the flavors were mind blowing! The restaurant was spotlessly clean and our server was very warm. Wonderful food! Visiting Kansas City and looking for something unique to eat that we do not find at home started searching and came across this gem. Food portions were more than generous. We got the vegetable platter and the meat platter and split it Amongst two adults and two kids! Also tried their honey wine the best I've tasted since I left England. I'm going to start with the positive...very fast (we ordered through door dash) fresh and flavorful. Now the negative...we couldn't eat it. We ordered 2 vegetarian combos and the chickpea dish. It was all so flavorful but it was sooooo spicy. Our family (small kids included) have been to half a dozen Ethiopian restaurants and we frequent one in OP that we love but they don't door dash so we figured we'd have a similar experience as all the other Ethiopian restaurants when we ordered from here but unfortunately it wasn't. Veggie combos to go are always packed closely together in the to go container which is usually fine and delicious when it all starts blending together but there were only 4 edible veggie sides out of 12 that weren't too spicy and those were too close to the other sides so we still couldn't eat them without accidentally touching the super spicy stuff. My husband and I love spicy but this was way over the top and we both started feeling sick after a few bites. I HATE wasting food but we had to toss it and I had to quickly make something for my kids (who were so excited to have Ethiopian) right before bed. I'm so disappointed. Sides that weren't spicy: beets, potato/carrot blend, green cabbage and purple cabbage. read more
