We grabbed a burger from a neighboring tuck and decided to walk over to grab some treats for the kiddos. I picked up the smelt ($6) and my friend got the ahi cubes ($14) and a bag of smelt too. The packaging is really cute and its like they get to enjoy the experience too. Eventually they plan on expanding their menu but for now they have ahi and smelt. They also serve up poke bowls and acai bowls for the humans. LOL. We found a nice shady spot in the park and made a little picnic with the kids. The Hawaiian style was equally as good, but with a simpler/less intense flavor that let the ahi shine. Nice size chunks of fresh soft fish! The bowls come with a lot of rice. I prefer the Old Yelp's 5-star rating as "Yay! I'm a fan!", remember those days? Now the 5-star rating is just "Great". Just "great" isn't how I feel about Shaka Bowls, it's more like "YAY! I am a FAN!!" Just 'great' is what you say when your boss asks you to work several hours after your finish time, and you are a salaried worker. The reason I love Shaka Bowls: - ISLAND BOWL, $11: some people gasp and wonder why do I spend $11 on a sweet treat when I am complaining about getting over-charged at a mediocre vegetarian restaurant? (see my review under this one on my main page), because this bowl is a large, generous-sized portion with quality fresh ingredients, that's why. It used to be $10 but the environmental laws about not using plastic containers anymore drove up the cost. Their acai blend is the best on the island. I've tried other acai places and I'm not a fan of 100% undiluted acai because it tastes kind of sour and activates my GERD, but not Shaka's! They even have a pitaya (dragonfruit) blend if you want. Honestly, I've tried getting my fix by going to Costco's freezer section and other acai bowl places but it doesn't come even close. The bowl comes with a generous serving of acai, your choice of sorbet (haupia, mango, pitaya, and whatever's in season), chopped strawberries (I substitute with banana), honey and granola. You can add on all kinds of other things for a $1.00 each, like more fruit, bee pollen, etc. The workers (owners?) are super friendly as well! They are super happy to see their customers and their service reflects it. I have been eating food from these people for years since they would appear at the Kapolei High market on Thursdays. The owners are both so personable and happy. They always greet me with a smile, and they remember me and my dog, Cookie. The food is great and very refreshing. I enjoy the Acai Bowls, but I definitely love the Poke bowls. We live close by and usually walk over to see them parked. We never got to order from them, so one day we ended up purchasing the Shaka Bowl. Finally got to try Shake Bowls at the ho'olaulea following the recent Waianae Christmas Parade and i'm so glad that I did! After a morning of watching the parade and walking the stretch of Farrington Hwy, we were pretty hungry for a little something. Poke bowls and acai bowls sounded like the perfect solution. We ordered a medium Shoyu Ahi Bowl, a small Spicy Ahi Bowl with Avocado, a small Shaka Acai Bowl and a small Monkey Bowl. I think it's worth pointing out that I really appreciate the 3 different sizes of bowl choices that they give for both poke and acai. Not all poke joints offer different sizes at all so being able to choose between small, medium and large was very nice. My little girl could have a small poke bowl and not waste any of it. The ahi in the poke bowls tasted fresh and juicy and and the toppings on each of those were very good. BF's Shoyu Ahi Bowl was gone in 60 seconds so I didn't even get a chance to get a photo of it. I guess that's a compliment to the chef all in itself, wouldn't you say? I had the Spicy Ahi Bowl with Avocado. My only regret is that I didn't get a bigger bowl. The unagi sauce with the avo and radish sprouts garnish was so yummy! My daughter had the shaka acai, and like her Dad, she dug in so fast that I couldn't get a photo of it. Another compliment to the chef. They made it just the way she liked it. She asked not to have the honey and bee pollen. The guy was really nice to ask if this was due to preference or an allergy, which I REALLY REALLY appreciate, because this goes to show that they have a genuine concern about cross contamination in case it was due to an allergy. Where I work, we ask our customers this question too and have to be cautious of these things because someone could really get hurt. Luckily, it was due to preference but I'm very thankful and immensely impressed that they asked. Okay, so I already had a poke bowl but I couldn't resist trying out the Monkey Bowl since PB and chocolate are my kryptonite. I'm SO GLAD that I did! It was so rich and peanut-buttery that it almost sent me on a kanak attack afterwards, but it was so relish that I wouldn't have felt bad about it. And I absolutely DON'T! If you see this truck around, RUN to it! You won't be sorry. I guess that's the sad thing about food trucks. I like how they have a variety of toppings, especially from chocolate to kalo (taro) & the original acai bowl. I believe you could also take certain toppings of (already set acai bowl) and add additional toppings listed I love that they have 3 different sizes for the acai bowls. Their small size is perfect for kids, but of course good for adults if you dont want to eat that much. I got the monkey acai. Has banana, granola, chocolate chip, caramel & peanut butter. If you are a peanut butter fan, this is right up your alley, but if you arent (like me), you can have them take it out. I didnt know that they mixed the peanut butter in the acai, I thought it'll just be a drizzle or a slab of peanut butter on top. So you could taste a lot of peanut butter flavoring, it over-powered the whole bowl, so I didnt like it much. My bf did, but im just not a huge fan of peanut butter. We also bought the shaka bowl, poke bowl, and Kalo & Haupia crunch. My bf REALLY loved the kalo & haupia crunch because he loves poi, especially the kalo cubes, hard to find those Cash & card accepted. Definitely coming back. I love the food truck feel in Hawaii, and Shaka Bowl definitely contributes nicely to the diversity of the food truck community. All the bowls here are 8$ which is pretty much your average acai bowl cost. I got the Shaka Bowl; this bowl included their own version of their acai blend which had Vita Coco coconut water blended in it. Yum. It was topped with granola, coconut, strawberries, bananas, blueberries, and bees pollen. The arrangement was quite beautiful. Let's get down to the critiquing.. To begin, the acai was pretty tasty, but I didn't get that much. Then I was a little disappointed to find out that the granola was a bit stale and had no crunch; its my favorite part. But it was the kind of granola that included the pumpkin seeds, so yum. ^__^ Continuing on, I had no problem with the fruits since they were all fresh, and freshly chopped. Lastly, I was let down when I saw him sprinkle on the bees pollen. You can see in my pictures how little there was. Incase you didn't know, bees pollen is good for energy, smooth skin, prostate care, and can even help reverse infertility. So why wouldn't I want a good helping. I love their açaí bowls and wish they had a permanent location instead of a truck for those days when I really want one but the truck's on the opposite side of the island. My personal favorite is the island bowl with haupia gelato and kalo pa'a (taro cubes). I really like their açaí blend which is on the sweeter side and the fact that it fills about 3/4 of the bowl. The blend is nice and thick instead of watery or icee. Not too long ago, I ventured to 808UrbanBowls and received an extremely disappointing and sad, measly excuse for an acai bowl. Upon writing my review, the owner (who goes under 808UrbanBowls, no name) has contested my review and though I pride myself on my honesty, I have wondered if maybe my standards for acai bowls are too high. I have since been on a quest to test new acai places to and see if what I received during that very horrible visit is simply the norm and if my idea of a good acai bowl is rare and near impossible to achieve. Turns out it's not that hard to make an excellent acai bowl because Shaka Bowls (like several other establishments) can do it. This place has excellent acai bowls and creative yet not excessive combinations! I got the "Monkey Bowl" with banana, walnuts, chocolate chips, and a peanut butter drizzle and I will be honest and say that it was one of the best that I have had! I would give it five stars but the actual acai blend turned soupy very quickly. However, the service was friendly and my bowl came out in a timely manner.
