CHEAP WITH THEIR CHICKEN Let me start off by saying that I haven't visited Shakey's for over a year. I use to love their "Bunch-A-Lunch" when I worked near a Shakey's in L.A. I took my son to the Upland Shakey's yesterday to celebrate his birthday with several of his friends. I ordered the Bunch-A-Lunch for everyone. I absolutely love fried chicken, so I couldn't wait to sink my teeth into some wings and breasts. When I got to the chicken tray in their buffet line, I could only find thighs and legs. I asked a Shakey's employee if they could please bring out some white meat. She said, "sorry, we only serve dark meat in our buffet." This of course instantly turned me off. How CHEAP can you get? Their Pizza was ok, and the rest of the food was about what you'd expect from an inexpensive buffet. My son enjoyed himself, which is why I gave them two stars instead of one. I was just there today, the food was pretty good, but it was super hot inside!! Everyone kept asking for them to turn up the air, and the owner did not want to, he was also super rude and when I asked for corporate number he refused to give it to me and said he was the owner. I said I hbderstand, but you have to answer to someone else, and he said "I'm the owner, I don't have to answer to anyone" never coming again. And to the owner, don't worry I got the number already. Had a good experience here. Service was good. The waitress had such a sweet personality. She was very nice. The arcade had minimal games so don't expect too much. Didn't try the salad bar. It was small. The pizza was pretty good. Not the best but it was good enough. The potatoes were highlight. I didn't expect it to be so good. Seasoned perfectly and fried to perfection. Weighed myself after getting back to my parents' house and discovered I lost weight again. Off to the buffet I go! Shakey's was one of the culinary pillars of my college career. (The others included Yoshinoya, Diddy Riese, and Norm's.) I, quite literally, have not been to a Shakey's in over seven years. But like a populist's campaign message in the '72 campaign, Shakey's was beckoning me to "come home." The lunch buffet is much more expensive than I remember it being. $7.34 (with tax). I definitely ate that amount (and likely more). I focused my energies primarily on the Mojo potatoes, which were a bit thin and overly cooked at this location. I remember them being thick and sopped with oil at the now-defunct Westwood Village location (see http://www.dailybruin.ucla.edu/archives/id/7067/). Pizza was nothing to write home about, and the salad was not terribly crisp --- despite the place just opening. That's the Shakey's way. The atmosphere here was interesting: 11:00. Okay now here we go again. 1 star sorry. Service at the register was unhelpful at best. The menus are placed behind you as you talk to the cashier. Not intuitive. Not good. After we placed our order we sat down and proceeded to wait for approximately 20 minutes the food arrived. Fair. Ordered pizza mojo and chicken. Food was good because you receive the food fresh from the oven. Outstanding. Here's the unfortunate part. 24 hrs later I've had the bubble guts all day accompanied with you know. Tonight was our first time eating at Shakey's Pizza since I was a small child. We mentioned when we were at the counter that this was our first time there. Originally, we thought we would order through a waitress not at the counter. At any rate, the young lady at the counter took our order, gave us a number and walked into the back area. We stood there waiting for a pitcher of beer because we weren't sure if she was going back to get it and she didn't really say anything. Then we found out that we had to go further down the counter but the communication from this young lady was pretty much nonexistent. The pizza was ok, the bread sticks were awesome and the atmosphere was fine. I would definitely say that there needs to be further training for people at the front counter. If I had seen how messy this place was prior to paying I would have left. Starting with the cashier she wasn't pleasant at all. I always expect to have a friendly customer service representative. The plates and cups we had were still wet. When handed the plates and our food it was rudely handed to us at the table by the same cashier (she had snake bites). The floor had trash everywhere and there were several employees who passed by until someone finally swept it up. The counters were disgusting! There was trash and soda around the fountain machine. The salad had a small variety of items but also was messy. The pizza was good but I'm afraid how sanitary the kitchen is. A horrible eating environment for a restaurant. Had a great time here. Stopped in at 2 after lunch so there was no crowd or wait. The manager, assistant manager, and all the staff were so nice to us. I had my friends 8 year old daughter with me so we decided to play games. The manager came in acting like he was playing and handed us a ton of coupons. This place is great! We went last night to take my boys for Valentine's Day since they had a heart shaped pizza special and we had such a great time. Though it was busy, the staff was incredibly nice and helpful. If a game stopped working- they were right there to fix it and make it right and were constantly checking if we needed anything. The food was good and my boys had a great time. The manager Luis made our night extra special and provided service far better than you get at most high end restaurants. Okay, I agree that their Mojo potatoes are great, my personal preference will be saving my appetite for the PIZZA!!! my favorite is rustic Chicken/Alfredo sauce pizza.. that is to die for ** unfortunately all other kind of pizzas seems kind of bland. I went to this location couple of times on lunch buffet time, service & food selection are great, service is always impeccable. Salad bar has great selection, bake/fried chicken are all yum! Dinner with DH last year, we share medium size pizza & iced tea, the atmosphere & service are always top notch. definitely my fave place to go !! read more

Here's a breakdown: -$15 for a medium pepperoni pizza that couldn't compete with Little Caesars. -The arcade area is barely more than a large closet full of children learning to gamble. -Out of the 13 games available 10 are solely for the purpose of winning tickets. -Nobody manning the ticket redemption booth despite the fact that 30 kids were anxiously waiting. -We stood around for 15 minutes (after she finally showed up) and fought through a sea of snotty noses to exchange our tickets for cheap toys that still needed to be assembled. Next time get a $5 Caesars pizza, go to the park for an hour and then give each kid $5 to spend at a dollar store and you'll come out way ahead on both fun and prizes. read more
