I felt that my portion was large, but it was actually the smallest out of all of our plates! The handmade noodles are thick and chewy, and the sauce is sweet and nutty. I did feel that as I ate more of the dish, the sweetness began to become overwhelming. Dumplings had solid flavor, but the style of the dumplings have more of a thick skin, which isn't really up my alley. I have heard great things about this restaurant and being from the East Coast I am always looking for recommendations especially Chinese food which is different in Northern California. I am a fan of noodles and dumplings. Shan Dong did not disappoint. I was waiting for a table for 2 today at 1:00 with one couple ahead. I was happy to see the restaurant full because I always prefer to dine at a a popular place because I know the food is fresh. It wasn't long to be seated and we were immediately greeted and served a pot of tea. The couple waiting ahead of me said it was their second time and were so impressed they returned to try more. We ordered the Shan Dong dumplings although we enjoyed them we would have preferred more filling because the dumplings were quite large and doughy. We ordered the sesame noodles with pork not spicy and they were served piping hot and so delicious. All the staff were friendly and attentive. The restaurant was clean and organized. One point I would like to emphasize is the restroom. It is located in a hall in the back. Had I used it before I ordered I have to admit I would have questioned whether or not to stay. Had I been with my youngest daughter who always uses the bathroom once seated I know for sure she have told us " we're leaving ". On my way out I spoke with the man at the desk and said we were very happy with the food but the bathroom was an issue. He explained that it's not his bathroom but maintained by the building management and he thanked me for bringing it to his attention and would notify them immediately. Unfortunately people have no way to know this so can be a reflection on them. Generally we don't see the condition of the kitchen so often the cleanliness will be judged on the dining room and bathroom. I was glad I gave him this information because it would be a detriment to the business. So please if you go don't judge them on the bathroom and enjoy the wonderful handmade noodles and all the flavorful dishes and the wonderful service. Prices are great too. While staying at the Hilton near by we decided to check out this highly rated "hole in the wall" restaurant. A friend who lives in Oakland said we wouldn't be disappointed and he was right!! I only wish we were dining with more than just the two of us because we would have loved to try so many more dishes. We could see from the families around us they were ordering plat after plate of beautiful and delicious smelling food!! We had the sizzling beef and scallop platter with deluxe combo chow mein. This place has been around for decades. My friends all been recommending this place to me. I was skeptical at first, because it felt like it was meant to serve Non-Chinese people. Randomly I got a Uber Eats deal for this place, and I decided to try it out. And I was very pleasantly surprised. As a Chinese person, this place definitely aced the test. These noodles are hand-pulled (if you had $1.00 more). It's so worth it! The default is spicy, so make sure you indicate non-spicy if you can't tolerate spicy. I literally just had leftovers for lunch the next day, and it was still delicious. SALT AND PAPER PORK: 5/5; One of my go-to items. They cut it in smaller pieces, so you're not chomping on a giant slab of meat. Each piece is so flavorful. I really like how they don't dump a giant jug of salt in the seasoning too. I ended up coming here on Lunar New Years Eve after seeing that the wait for Ming's Tasty across the street was super long. We put our name down here and our table was ready within 10 minutes. We ordered the sesame paste handmade noodles and the spicy wontons to share. The handmade noodles are super thick and chewy, which is my favorite type of noodle. Now, the sesame sauce -- oMG I have no idea what they put in it, but it's SO addicting. It's the perfect balance of sweetness, savoriness, and nutiness that I couldn't stop. I would order that over and over again, and really want to try making it on my own too. The hand-pulled noodles are a MUST. Other reviews knock the thick, chewy noodles but they are fantastic and comfort food. Maybe the diners are confusing the noodles with Cantonese style rice noodles? These are completely different. These are hand-pulled wheat noodles. I loved the salt-and-pepper pork chop and the pork and leek dumplings. The takeout was ready in 25 minutes and we waited outside. I've always seen a crowd outside this restaurant whenever I visited Oakland Chinatown and it wasn't until I moved out of Oakland that I finally got the chance to try it. My first impression when looking up this place on Yelp was that it might be the San Tung of Oakland. It had string beans and the sesame/peanut noodles that I loved at San Tung. Upon coming here, I would say they are just similar in the sense that they are Chinese restaurants. The service here was great overall, with great English-speaking staff. They use the Yelp waitlist for easy check-in and wait times. My only complaint is that they forgot to write down our orders of dumplings, which we didn't realize till the very end when it never came. The food here was okay. Everything was personally too salty and saucy. My personal favorite of the night was the salt and pepper pork chops. I love love love how garlicky they were, which is somewhat unique here compared to other Chinese restaurants. We also ordered the honey walnut prawns (another favorite), string beans (too salty), sesame paste noodles (also too salty), and combination fried rice (actually not bad). Uncle at the podium checking people in and stacks and stacks of togo boxes. Getting seated, they knew exactly what type of table we needed for our party of 4. Round table with a lazy susan. PERFECTION. Fans all around the restaurant, you know it's about to go down. I let my friend take charge of the order and next thing you know, food was coming out pipping hot. Our lazy susan was filled before you know it. We got the following: Special Shan Dong Dumplings - one of the first things that came out and it was very doughy. It made me almost question our existence at this restaurant but I am happy to report that this was the only no no here. Perhaps I just don't have the acquired taste for it. Dry Braised Green Beans - Not a dish I would get, but if you're at an asian spot, you know it's good. Flash fried to perfection and not overly salted. Chicken chow mein - per bf's request because he's a basic b. Salt & Pepper Prawns - always a hit at any asian restaurant. So light and cripsy. Shan Dong chicken - This is a must. It was like orange chicken and all the chickens had a baby. It was just plain delicious. Onion pancakes - This was my favorite. It was like a warm blanket giving you a huge. So comforting. Sesame paste noodles - not mine or my bf's favorite. tasted a lot like peanut butter but this is their most famous dish so we had to try it. One critic I have overall is the size of the noodz. Here you can enjoy traditional and authentic Chinese food, you can see how they are making it from scratch, the staff is amiable, and you will not feel at any time that you are being "rushed" to finish your meal. Extra point (at least for me): your clothes will not smell like food when leaving the place. There isn't a dish you cannot enjoy, so follow your instinct and ask for what you most want that day. I was going to sit in, but there was a line for seated patrons at 8:30 on a Tuesday night, so change of plans, I ordered take out. Food was ready quickly. There were car after car double parked on 10th st to pick up take out. I actually came here twice this week and ordered the following: special Shandong Beef - breaded and fried with a sweet sauce. Interesting texture, flavorful, not my favorite but my family inhaled it. Combo fried rice was really good and loaded; Pork and veg dumplings were the bomb! Doughy little pouches, with homemade goodness; Salt and pepper fish was my favorite- all the pieces were crunchy and the fish delicate. Shandong noodles - were again, very home made tasting. A bit too starchy for me. The sauce was absorbed by the time I ate them, so they were in a clump, but the flavor was good. Blistered green beans were bright and nicely seasoned. Egg foo yung - was a perfect dish to satisfy a craving; Wor won ton soup had a ton of meat, veggies and their infamous won tons; Beef with black bean sauce had crisp veggies and very tender and flavorful beef. I was excited to try this restaurant based on the reviews, but I was genuinely disappointed. My party of two was seated promptly on a Wednesday night, and it was still pretty packed. We ordered the Sesame paste hand pulled noodles, string beans, and salt and pepper pork chops. Everything was so so salty. I was so thrown off by how popular the noodles were, because so many reviews were raving about them. This was probably the worst dish of them all. We couldn't get through half of it just because of how salty it was. The pork chops weren't as salty, but they definitely weren't fresh. There was an odd aftertaste after each bite, so it was evident that these have been sitting in the fridge for awhile. The string beans were probably the best, but even then, still salty. Luckily, the bill wasn't horrible (around $40), but i felt guilty for not taking any leftovers. It was just way too salty. read more

Would love to give 4.5 stars. Delicious food, friendly servers, what more could you want? There were a few mix ups with the orders, but the servers patiently made the changes. My group ordered dumplings (yum!), Shan dong chicken (yum), Sichuan shrimp (delish), mushroom and fish filet (didn't try) and Mongolian beef (tasty!) All dishes were flavorful and well made. The chili sauce was great as well. Half a star off only because I wanted more green veggie options, since I'm not a green bean person. Many other groups ordered the mountainous plates of noodles. The positives are that the service is quick and the food is filling. There's nothing super bad about the place but there's nothing worth raving over.
