I had some friends over for a potluck dinner recently, and one of them brought a noodle dish. It was incredible! I texted my friend a couple weeks later to ask where the noodles came from, and he shared not only the name of the restaurant -- Shandong -- but that I should be careful to ask for the sesame paste handmade noodles. Fast forward to this past weekend, when I visited Shandong for the first time. My date and I agreed that while the food was delicious, the service was not impressive. In our case, we tried to order several times, and the waitstaff either did not hear/understand us, or did a really good job of pretending and simply not making eye contact. Unlike at most restaurants, we didn't have an assigned person waiting on our table. When we were finally able to order, we asked for the sesame paste handmade noodles and the dry braised green beans. We had to ask for water, which was delivered but never refilled. The first noodles they brought had beef in them, so we explained that we had ordered the noodles without any meat. The correct noodles were soon brought out, but there was no sign of our other dish. Almost 10 minutes later, we reminded the waitstaff that we had also ordered green beans. The noodles and the green beans were very tasty! By the time the green beans came out, I had put my phone away, so the only photo I have is of the thick noodles with sesame paste. My recommendation would be to place an order to go. Then walk (or drive) down to Jack London Square and enjoy your food while watching the sunset. read more

The quality, price and generous servings of Shangong cannot be beat. I came on a rainy Saturday night around 5:30 and only had to wait a few minutes before being sat. We ordered the combination chow mein with hand pulled noodles, special shandong dumplings and the shandong chicken. The dumplings came out in minutes so if you're coming in very hungry get a plate of those to hold you over. They are good but nothing amazing, but do come with an amazing sauce - it is similar to traditional dumpling sauces but also have chili oil and some sweetness. The hand pulled noodles and chicken were amazing. I'd come back again and again for those. Though the service could be better and place could be cleaner, I always appreciate a no frills Chinese restaurant. We paid a little over $50 for the 3 dishes and took home another meals worth of food; however the chicken didn't reheat the best so recommend finishing that all at once. Incredible Chinese food! We've gotten takeout from here many times, but usually just for me, my husband, and maybe a couple friends. This last time was different - my company had an onsite in Oakland and we didn't have any lunch planned for one of the days. Once everyone decided we wanted to order in, I came up with a massive list of food and called Shandong hoping it wasn't too much for literally 30min of notice for ~25 people. It wasn't! We ordered a huge assortment of food including multiple orders of their handmade noodles (don't sleep on these) and everything came out hot and ready to go. My coworkers from all over the world got to experience the amazing Chinese food we have in the bay, and I got all the credit for doing the ordering. Hats off to the cooks at Shandong! Hadn't been to this restaurant in over 10 years (maybe closer to 15!) and thought I'd give it another try. It was so good! We got the shrimp chow mein with hand made noodles, green beans, and spicy wontons. Everything was delicious and the noodles were my favorite. I could eat these all the time! I love their Shandong Chicken and Dry Braised Green Beans. I also ordered the onion pancake tonight ... it was just okay. 1. The place is small. 2. It gets pretty loud. 3. The noodles are chewy and the sauce is super flavorful and creamy with a kick to it. Fire. Just go and order anything. The knife shaved noodles are incredible, perfect size and texture. Chewy but not too soft. Really there was nothing bad on the menu and you should stretch your comfort zone and ask for recommendations. Must be some misunderstanding about Shandong food. Too sweet for Chinese food, especially Shandong food. Never ever had sweet sesame noodles, although the menu says it's spicy. Shandong Restaurant is a popular Chinese restaurant located in Oakland Chinatown. It's the type of place that people rave about, but there might be something on the menu you might not like. The other day I went there with a group, and we ordered some items- 1) Shandong Chicken, Grade (4/5): battered and deep fried chicken. Then coated with a sweet sauce, so it's a little soggy. Very tasty and not dry. 2) Hot & Sour Soup, Grade (4/5): Good spicy soup for a cold day. A little on the salty side, but spicy hot. Some people believe this soup is good for blood circulation. 3) Dry Braised String Beans, Grade (5/5): One of the oldest Chinese dishes. Stir-fried and tasty, with a little gravy. 4) Chicken Chow Mein, Homemade Noodles, Grade (2/5): I didn't like these noodles. Thick, ropey noodles? Maybe we should call it Chow Fun. Also, the sauce had a weird flavor. Maybe it was fish sauce flavor. The dish is very filling, but I didn't like the thick and doughy noodles. 5) Potstickers, Grade (4/5): Good potstickers with good filling. * Service, Grade (3/5): Fair service in a busy restaurant. Shandong represents an excellent combo of taste and value -- they have fantastic food for a good price, and you'll have a great experience while you're here. I won't take up too much time going through the specifics, but I'll recommend going with a good size group, and ordering a bunch of dishes, so you can share them family-style and really get to experience a lot of different varieties. When I stopped by Shandong with a group of 7 friends, we ordered a number of different dishes, had plenty to eat (and even some extras at the end), and all told, I believe we spent less than $25 each. Chow mein (with hand noodles +$1): Must get the hand noodles. It is the perfect amount of seasoning, sauce, and so good with veggies and shandong chicken. Contrary to popular belief and many reviews, I wasn't a huge fan of the sesame noodles. The noodles have a more peanut butter creamy taste more than sesame and get a little tiring over time. I personally did not like it. I had to mix it in with some shandong chicken sauce. 3. Garlic green beans: THIS IS SO FLAVORFUL AND GARLICKY! I like these way better than the Din Tai Fung ones. 4. Shandong pork dumplings: Wow just wow. They are straight up homemade dumplings steamed right in front of your face basically. So good served with the black vinegar dipping sauce they prepare. My mother had mentioned a peculiar small eatery that specializes in hand pulled noodles, and that is exactly what we had. Location: Oakland's Chinatown, though not as large in comparison to San Francisco's or that of Manhatten's; there is a thriving food scene and access is just a BART ride away for most people. My mother had forgotten the exact location for this eatery that I am writing about, but that the local merchants are more than happy to lend a helping hand. Service: well, it's not exactly a hole in the wall, and though it might look like that from the outside, once you enter; there's quite a bit of tables. You can easily waitlist yourself on their YELP equipped tablet, but a friendly server directed my mother and I immediately to a table for two. It was quite busy and so our server stopped by multiple times to see what we would like to order. The menu is quite extensive. The Food: everything came out piping hot immediately minutes later. The highlight is their freshly made hand pulled noodles. - Special Shandong Dumplings: I'm not used to a thicker dumpling wrapper, but these were so meaty full and plump, that I completely forgot about the dumpling skin. These are a must get. I made sure to drizzle some of the vinegar soy sauce into my already bitten dumpling; so delicious. - Noodles with Meat Sauce: I love the umami-ness of this dish. It's simple yet filling. - Noodles with Beef and Tomato: this was my absolute favorite of the two noodle dishes I had. I love the combination of sweet, savory and slight tang. I had a massage last week in Chinatown. It was evening when I got out, and I was hungry. Shandong was right down the street. I had eaten there before so I knew to expect some really good noodles or dumplings. When I walked up to the location, I almost walked past it because it is so nondescript. However, you cannot miss the people making noodles in the window. I stood mesmerized, watching the noodle makers, and watching all the people going in and out of the bustling restaurant before I finally looked at the menu. I was overwhelmed because everything looked good, and the aromas coming from the restaurant made my mind's appetite go in a million directions! I wish I had been in a group because then we could have shared all of the dishes I wanted to try, but I settled for some wonton soup to take with me. I just got the basic wonton soup. The reason for two stars is not the quality or even taste of the food. The two stars is because the portion size you get when ordering take out is much smaller than when you eat in. This is my second time being here (coulda swore I left a review before, but guess not). This is a solid spot that is a literal hole in the wall, but has some great Chinese food. The service was great and quick (I definitely recommend getting on the wait list if you plan on eating here before you arrive). We ordered the won ton soup, combination chow Mein, Shan dong chicken and prawns with walnuts. All of it tasted great and was solid! My only gripe is this area is one of those spots I wouldn't wanna be walking around late at night. Regardless, we will be back to try more things! read more

This place was always so crowded. Before covid was when we went. Food was really good. I had the best mapo tofu I have ever had. Their dumplings was to rave about but I found it just OK. Service was another story. If you can compensate the food for the service then it would nit be an issue for you. Not to mention food was very affordable. read more
