I wanted to give higher reviews because when I first tried this place years ago it was really good, but when I came back this time I didn't get the same wow factor. Although it was still pretty busy restaurant on Saturday for the customers seemed pretty happy. The crowd seemed much younger this time and less family focus. I didn't find much flavor in the dishes. The hand made chicken noodles were too thick, but chicken meat was tender. The appetizer of a noodle dish I order was okay, but lacked flavor. The dumplings were thick skinned and homemade. I felt that I was eating a lot of dough and not much meat in the dishes. I turned into a doughgirl today! I probably won't be back. There are other places I feel make better dumplings and hand pull noodles. But if you want comfort food of just fresh dumplings come here and just order side dish of vegetables. I know, I know... just 3 stars? I can explain. I was really excited to start working near Lake Merritt because I thought it would mean getting the opportunity to gorge myself on Shandong's offerings for lunch all the time. I remember the first time my mom brought home some of their special dumplings for dinner one night. It was like I was 2-years-old again, and the only word that came tumbling out of my mouth was "MINE!" A couple of weeks ago, I ordered their special dumplings for lunch (10 for $9.95), but because I needed to meet the $15 minimum to use my credit card, I also went with the Shandong chicken lunch plate ($8.95). I just about flew back to work, but once I started tucking in, my face fell. Let's start with the lunch plate. The rice was fine in some spoonfuls, while others were just a soggy mess. As for the chicken itself, well, I think they should rename it Shandong breading. As for the dumplings... they just weren't as good. Aside from salt, I couldn't really taste the meat or the vegetables that composed it. The dumpling skins and the dipping sauce were fine, but not the actual filling. How strange and sad. Last week, I went and ordered their Singapore rice noodles ($9.95 - I had cash that time around - whoo!). It wasn't too oily or anything, but it was, overall, pretty tasteless. I mean, they put salt in it, and it was also kind of peppery, but the curry flavor was really lacking. I'm guessing there's a theme here. Help a Yelper out, people. The restaurant is clean and well taken care of. Service was prompt and the food was served within 5 minutes. We ordered the hand cut hot and spicy chow mein, dry braised green beans and the won ton soup. The chow mein was so good. The noodles were tender and had that chewy resistance with each bite. The spiciness wasn't overwhelming and was easily remedied by chasing with some tea. The green beans were cooked perfectly with a little crunch like I like them. Amazing on a few fronts: noodles are freshly made in full view to the side as you enter; the taste of fresh thick noodles in a dish is something else (choose the spicy main - it is nothing major, just a little tingle for the palette); and the patrons are the full ethnic mix of Oakland! There is a sweet and sour crispy Chicken side you must also try. The ladies in the kitchen are sweet as can be as you watch their hands press up against the dough like a Michelangelo masterpiece, true sight to behold. There is constant traffic coming in and out of the place from people waiting to be seated to to-go and pick-up orders. Be ready to wait for a table and do not expect to be waited on. They will take your order and have your food out, but do not have time to really refill drinks or really provide that kind of service as they are on the go. We were in East Oakland visiting a friend. We left their place late... After 8 pm. Not sure what food place would be open nearby that was good and would accommodate 6 of us. We had the older parents that wanted Chinese food. I know you can't go wrong in Downtown Oakland. Yelp to the rescue. Lucky for meI called ahead and put my name in. People will make remarks about their Asian-ness and not see what they hype here is. The hype is the reasonable pricing and food is actually great. There's a special for $50 and you order 5 different entrees to pick and choose from. The food tasted fresh, not over cooked or salty. Each entree we had was ooh and ahh. We had folks at our table that can be critical about food and they sat quietly and dug into their food with a smile. Mongolian beef- usual comment that we wished it had more beef than onions. But that was the first to go. Shrimp vegetable and salt and pepper shrimp was a great combination. Chinese broccoli was cooked to perfection. Combination Egg Fu young was delicious- I could have eaten that alone as a meal. We also had a eggplant. We thought 6 entrees would be good. Not! I would have loved to order more. Just don't think we could finish. And it's not because it's Snelling portions, they gave good portions. We just had more veggies. We also forgot to order noodles which was my intent to eat since they serve fresh noodles. This gives me reason to come back. Customer service was good! Ladies were friendly. Tried out ShanDong after reading all the reviews on this restaurant and I was not impress. The noodles was not flavored enough, the dumpling skin was too thick. Everyone raves about the Sesame paste noodles (alway upgrade to handmade) and Shandong chicken but you must toss in an order of Dry Braised Green Beans. The place is always packed and double parked customers waiting for take away. Friends we've taken here tell us they still crave their food. Order ahead and take away, don't be discouraged by the lines, they are extremely good at moving a high volume of orders while maintaining high quality. I was enticed by the number of reviews and the long wait. I thought to myself that those are all the signs for a great restaurant. I was wrong. I ordered the Special Shan Dong Dumplings and Szechuan Bean Curd (Vegetarian Ma Po Tofu), and I tried some of my friend's dish with the hand pulled noodles. It was all incredibly average. So mediocre that I'm already forgetting my experience as I am writing this. I've definitely had better, and I've probably had worse. It is the epitome of a Chinese American restaurant. It completely depends on what you are looking for, but this restaurant was not it. This place is fantastic! You must try the hand-made noodles here. As you walk in the humble store-front, off to the left you will see the staff pulling the noodles by hand and boiling them as needed for each order. It's fun to watch while you wait for your table. This is not a fancy place, but the food is excellent. The service is decent but a smidge hurried. And there can be a wait on the weekends and lunch time. We tried the beef chow mein. The meat was surprisingly tender and had no fat or cartilage - good quality. But the highlight of that dish is definitely the noodles. They are amazingly chewy and perfectly cooked. So fresh. We also tried the Hot Spicy Eggplant. We ordered it not spicy, and it came out just as ordered. The sauce is a Szechuan-type concoction that is littered with delicious, small garlic slices. The eggplant was perfectly cooked. Every table gets a fresh complimentary teapot with hot black tea. There's a teabag in each one. It needs to steep a little while. Parking is a breeze at the garage in the shopping mall next door. Just park in the B1 level and you pop out within a 3 minute walk to Shan Dong. One piece of feedback. One word: disappointing. This place is over hyped. The sesame house special noodles we ordered tasted like it was sautéed in Skippy's peanut butter. We ordered beef eggplant, but when the dish came out there was no beef. Space inside is cramped, hot, and tables are small (hard to fit more than 1-2 plates on a 4 seater table). This is my favorite Chinese restaurant in the East Bay. The food is delicious and fresh. Although I'm not that outgoing when it comes to Chinese food, whatever I get from here is tasty. It can take a while to get your food when ordering for pick up; sometimes up to 45 minutes. As long as you plan ahead and don't mind waiting an extra 5-10 minutes in line once you arrive, you won't be disappointed. Parking can also sometimes be difficult as well. I heard this restaurant was a must-try in Oakland. One night I decided to do carry out. I got the sesame noodles, as recommended by everyone on yelp. I also got the Shandong special chicken. And some pork dumplings. The sesame noodles are really the star of this place. They have such an interesting flavor. You can get hand-cut noodles or regular packaged noodles. I got hand cut, but I found them to be way too thick. Almost like dumplings. Speaking of dumplings, I did not enjoy the dumplings at all. The skin was way too thick and the filling had too much green onion so the texture was off and it wasn't as flavorful as I'm used to. And the special chicken is similar to General Tso chicken.But this is an authentic Chinese restaurant and I would probably come back just for the sesame noodles! read more

Came here on a Friday night with a party of 4 and I guess this is the happening place in Oakland's Chinatown for dinner. When we arrived at 7:30pm there was a crowd waiting to be called in. We waited for about 30 minutes and were called in. It's a small typical Chinese restaurant where you may get better service if you can speak Chinese. We ordered the Pork Chow Mein with hand drawn noodles (which are $1 extra) and the Shandong Dumplings. The noodles for some reason had a strong peanut smell and taste to them and were very thick and chewy. My family liked them but they were just meh for me.
