Croissants from Ariscault (named Best Bakery of the Year by Bon Appetite) is less than $5 and is in a city with insanely high rents. Schats should touch grass. Their food is not it. The first time I stopped by on the way to Tahoe, it was 4:55pm and the lady turned the lights off in our face and said "we're closed". Advertised hours are 6am-6pm. We have visited the Schat's in Bishop several times and this was our first trip to the Mammoth shop. We knew to expect a line, but could see how they've just raised prices as they were taped on the board over their old prices. The food preparer did not seem to hear 3 times that I asked for half a sandwich- since it was on 2 smaller slices of bread I thought I'd be charged for a half, but was charged for a whole ($16). I hadn't ordered the turkey before so just be prepared that it looks like someone pulls apart a thanksgiving turkey leg and puts it in the sandwich. I have been to Schat's several times while visiting Mammoth Lakes. There is always a line to order and it is easy to see why! They have breakfast items, lunch sandwiches, pastries, cakes, desserts, breads, oils, salad dressings...you name it! I usually am here for breakfast when visiting. I always get the bacon, egg, and cheese croissant with a pastry. This time I went with the sugar twist and my husband got the raspberry bear claw. The bacon is the best part of the breakfast sandwich, it is thick bacon that is chopped into small pieces. The sausage and ham ones are okay, but not as good in my opinion. They only have a few of these sandwiches out at a time, but they are regularly refilling their stock of them throughout the morning. The real star of the breakfast is their pastries! I could get a breakfast sandwich anywhere, but would specifically come here for their pastries. They are big, filling, and have a delightful flavor. There is plenty of parking out front in their lot and several tables to choose from inside. Overall this is a great place to stop for a bite, but be prepared to wait in line and pay a little bit more than what you might find elsewhere. read more

Well this one does not compare to the main location, they still have the same wonderful treats and breads. This place is awful... I came to mammoth lakes for my fiancé's birthday and thought I would order him a freshly baked cake from this cute little bakery. I went in to order and found the selection of pastries to be amazing! They had so many different kinds of pastries and few sugar free options too. The lady at the counter was also super kind and hospitable. Anyway, I placed my order for a cake on one of their order forms. After filling out the form, I handed it to the cashier and she even offered to bring out the baker so that I could speak with him about specifics for my cake. I had originally selected a 1/4 sheet sized cake but that was too much, so the baker advised I order a smaller cake since it was only for 5 people. He asked what time I would need the cake to be ready and I asked for 12pm the next day (to give him time, of course). He agreed and confirmed that the cake would be ready by 12pm on Saturday (my fiancé's birthday). Come Saturday, I get to the bakery at 12pm and ask the young lady at the counter if my cake was ready for pickup. She asked her coworker if there were any cakes ready and she said that there wasn't. She called the baker on the phone, passed the phone to me so that I could speak with him, and then he told me that he lost my order sheet so he didn't make my cake. I was furious!!! How could he lose the order sheet? Just so unorganized. He then said that he could have it ready in about an hour, but ultimately I decided to cancel the order because I needed the cake to be ready at the pick up time for my fiancés birthday lunch... I was incredibly disappointed. I ended up asking for a refund and I was refunded my money ($45 dollars by the way for what was going to be a tiny cake). I ended up going to Vons to buy a tiramisu cake for only $20. I absolutely won't be visiting this location when I come back to Mammoth. I'll be stopping at the vastly superior Erick Schat's Bakkery in Bishop instead!!! read more

Oh my goodness! Tourist trap - Stay away!!! We stopped for a sandwich and the experience was beyond expensive and quite unbelievable! 3 sandwiches - $68?!?!? This place charges $3 extra for cheese on a $18 sandwich - so sandwiches are $21!!! Dang! And... they like penny pinch weigh out the meat! For the price, you would expect a big amazing sandwich - but that was not the case at all! Trust me... the sandwiches we got were the cheapest and most lackluster sandwiches I have ever had at a restaurant! Ok, so food was horribly overpriced - that sucks - but to add to the experience an employee cutting deli meat behind the counter got in an argument with the manager - it was unreal. Also, the employees freely grazed on cheese ($3 a slice) while they sliced it in view of customers - yes they were eating cheese while slicing it! And the guy making the sandwiches kept wiping his knife on a super dirty towel! Oh boy! Just not good at all! Skip the 'schat' at Schats and go anywhere else! Heck go to Grocery Outlet down the street - get a loaf of bread - and some deli meat! I guarantee you will make better sandwiches! read more

I was severely mistreated here by the older woman who works there- she's either the owner or manager. I came in with my service animal and she wouldn't serve me or let me buy baked goods. I told her my dog was a service animal and she still would not serve me and was extremely rude, telling the other employee not to serve me. I was so upset that I got my service animal documents to show her and she continued to be mean and say that he didn't have a vest on and it's required. I informed her it's not required to have a vest on but she asked if he was and I told her yes and was happy to show her documents. She yelled and was nasty and we ended up leaving. To have someone treat me like this when I have a dog with me to help with a medical issue is beyond me. Never will return. read more

Schat's Bakery is Mammoth Mountain's best kept secret. I wish I took a pic of the Roast Beef sandwich, but we inhaled it before I thought of it. Ten years ago, my friend asked me to bring him back four loaves of their honey Squaw bread. At the time, I didn't know what a gem this place is. Now if I am in Mammoth, this is the place I pick up freshly baked turkey sandwiches for lunch. I even buy them the day before and pack them for eating on the slopes. The desserts are delicious. The bread is gift worthy. The sandwiches are fresh and mouthwatering. I dream of trying each of their chocolate treats. And the staff is super nice. I mean, heartwarmingly sweet. I liked this place more than I thought I would. It's on Main St, in a rather large building and it's designed to look old but it's clearly not. The amount of fresh baked breads, mouthwatering desserts and various German imports were almost overwhelming. My husband talked me into going into the back and splitting a sandwich which ended up being a great idea. The back room is a large dining room and a counter where you can have someone build you a sandwich. We got there at about 1:30 in the afternoon and they had already run out of roast beef and soup. So we ordered a Turkey sandwich on sourdough and it came with a chocolate chip cookie. It was decently priced and perfect for us to share. The bread made it the best sandwich I've ever had. What really caught me off guard was they do not use deli meat. I asked for turkey and she asked if I wanted light or dark meat and started carving a large Thanksgiving Turkey. This is my second time coming to Schat's but first time at this location. I have been to the other location in Bishop. The one in Bishop is HUGE compared to this one so I was a bit disappointed by the lack of bread selection at the Mammoth location. Nonetheless I was pretty happy with what I got here. I got the breakfast croissant with egg, cheese and bacon (they were out of the no meat kind) and a blueberry cream cheese pastry. Both were very delicious, but the croissant sandwich was a bit dry, including the bacon and cheese!! The cheese was a little like rubber. The pastry was very good though overall. I also got a loaf of the Sheepherder and focaccia for family and they reported back that those were very delicious. Really empty for being a buzzing Friday night. Maybe a smaller location would have served a better purpose here and would maintain a higher quality of food. The cream puff tasted good, but it's texture definitely proved it had been sitting for quite some time. The cookies and churro, unfortunately, were not a hit. How awkward, I thought, and potentially embarrassing! So I asked the prices of a few items and they were high (e.g.,, the cups of orange juice displayed at the register are $7.99 each). I'm a PCT thru-hiker and stopped by on the Memorial Day. I came in expecting a long line, but I did not expect the severe under-staffing. The counter was run by a woman and her young son. (He couldn't have been more than 14 years old.) The line moved very, very slowly... There were no prices on the pastry display, and the drink prices on the chalkboard were half-erased. I had expected to pay a pretty penny, but even so, $27 for 3 pastries and a cup of tea (which was $5.50, the most expensive tea I've ever had) seemed excessive. The woman working the counter did not wear gloves as she made my loose-leaf tea and packaged my pastries... The dining area was dirty, with zero cleaning done between customers. Stains and crumbs everywhere. The pastries were a bit above average but not as good as at the Bishop location, where I'd eaten 8 days before. Overall, I have to give only 3 stars because of the hidden prices, the use of child labor, the unhygienic practices, and lack of cleaning. This could've been a much better business with just a few very simple changes, but alas... At some point in the future, I'll go on a roadtrip to revisit every town on the PCT. I will not visit this bakery again, though. read more
