Our favorite neighborhood sushi spot closed down when the owner retired after like 30 years so we have been on the hunt for a new spot ever since. We have been going to the Thai restaurant next door so decided to give Shima Sushi a try and glad we did. We did a take out order of a few different rolls and tempura app and it all was very tasty and the price was right. The order was ready right on time and the food was fresh. We will come back to eat it and get the full effect. It seems nice inside and the server was friendly. We found the prices to be reasonable to boot. We'll be back. read more

I don't know why I gave a 3 stars only for so long to this place. So here is my update: I do come here quite often after having been disappointed big time by Chacha sushi (I usually try not to compare restaurants in my reviews but those 2 places are pretty similar). Their food is consistent and offer a very good value for money especially in this area (Cambrian Park). Their rolls have nothing to envy to other californian sushi restaurants in south SJ (I'd even say that some of their rolls are more creative and better presented). Fishes are very fresh. BBQ plates are delicious. Their Udon noodles are always perfectly cooked, never soggy, their broth is always clear, not salty, no MSG but very tasty and flavorful. The staff (Korean) is very nice and efficient. They might "sound" odd but talk to them slowly and they'll pretty much accommodate any of my (sometime weird) requests. Ishi Shima is located in a strip mall dominated by Lucky Market. Parking is a breeze. Ishi Shima is a very busy at lunch time. If you arrive at noon be prepared to wait. Service, however, is swift, so you will be seated without a long wait. The food comes quickly and is quite good and attractively presented. The portions are ample. The crunch roll is interesting. but the crunch itself, crumpled tenura, is deep fried and excessive. The donburi was rather unsavory due to an unattractive distribution of pale egg on top. Odd. The dining area is small, but the seating is comfortable and you will not feel cramped. The room is beautifully decorated in a minimalist style. Servers work fast and hard to keep the dishes coming and the tables clean. The waitresses are friendly and attentive. Restaurant and restrooms are clean. read more

The lady at the front was lovely, but the food was average. The chicken katsu in my bento box was good but very heavily breaded; I would have liked some more actual chicken. Working in San Jose my coworker suggested sushi for dinner and I was like hell yeah. Arrived at the closest sushi place near our hotel due to covid 19 we had to sit out side on the patio area provide by the restaurant. We both ordered the dinner bento B we both got beef teriyaki, I got combo tempura, spicy tuna roll with 2 cuts of yellow tail. Co-worker ordered beef teriyaki, California roll and 4 pieces of sushi. Which was served with salad and miso soup. I was so hungry I only took pictures of the soup and salad when they served us I just started eating by the end of the meal we were so full no food was wasted and all plates cleaned off by use we shared a Sapporo. Overall a great meal thanks to the staff for filling our hungry stomachs. read more

I needed to sit and contemplate this review and not tie any emotions. I and my family were VERY disappointed in how we were treated. We are returning customers over the last 10+ yrs, became good friends with the previous owners and experienced the change in ownership first hand. I will admit the QOS (Quality of Service) and Quality of food has significantly degraded over the last 2 years. I drop $$$$ during each visit, tip very well and yet we are treated as second class citizens. Very disappointed tonight. Sat over 10min without staff acknowledging our existence. Staff paid more attention to guests seated after us and cleaning tables. After 15 min w/o service, decided to take my family and leave. Upon our exit, staff (mind you there was only 2 wait staff) said "thank you hope you enjoyed your meal". Mind you, we were never served. This indicates the staff has no idea what is going on. We now will be looking for a new place. Unfortunate as this was our 'go-to' place for years. read more

WOW! What an incredible sushi experience for me and my two sons! My 12 & 10 year old brave culinary adventurers Judah and Joshua are new to the Japanese food scene, and what a perfect place to introduce them to the sushi culture. We had an awesome dining experience. We sat at the sushi bar and ordered 2 rolls at a time a watched the chef's meticulously master each roll. The service was superb. The staff was respectful, friendly, and gave us a delightful evening. My son's and I had an experience we will never forget, and we have now found our new favorite sushi restaurant. We highly recommend sitting at the bar, and finish your meal with the "Royal" roll it was EPIC!!! Great ambiance, nice and comfortable atmosphere. We were very comfortable and felt very welcome.. food was very fresh and every roll was delicious We spent less than $100 for 3 people and we were fully satisfied, and that's with a 25% tip. We ordered a Caterpillar roll, Super California roll, 2 California rolls, 3 salads, and the Royal roll. The rolls were huge! The best CA rolls we've ever had not a crab salad! Stopped by for the first time today as we have been trying to find out where our favorite sushi master had gone when he moved from the Mountain View location that he closed due to land redevelopment. This place did not let us down. While John was sadly out of town, the sushi master who served us was exceptional and extremely friendly and concerned about how our experience was going. The wait staff (only one due to weekend lunch) was very friendly and very busy! The rolls were wonderful and the nigiri had very nice portion sizes. We will be back. Anytime we're in San Jose, we'll be stopping by here for lunch/dinner! MMmm! Each meal starts with edamame. :) Their dinner specials are awesome -- you get salad, miso soup, rice and your pick of 3 entrees! I got sashimi, tempura and Korean BBQ beef (yes, I said Korean BBQ)! The sashimi is melt-in-your-mouth fresh, and the Korean BBQ beef was tasty & tender (my mouth is watering just thinking about it!). The only thing is the tempura batter was a little too thick for me (I like it a bit more light and flaky). We finished off the meal with a beer - perfect! The service was friendly and quick - loved it! Oh and you have to try the Camden Roll - that is our favorite! Macadamia nuts sprinkled over the top of a roll of salmon and tuna - genius! I enjoy going here with my buddy Greg or bringing my daughter here. They're very child friendly. I've been going here since 2004, I think. My daughter was in Kindergarden with their son, and they brought sushi to one of the parties. I was hooked. As everyone says, they buy fresh. And yes, you pay more for it these days (so I don't go as often as I'd like, but I accept the trade off). I started eating sashimi when I was 4 and love the odd stuff (I would die to find a place that offers "round eyes" raw eel but every time I ask, they say "no, no, unagi only" *sigh*). I finally started appreciating sushi when I was 20. My DH is an hamachi and saba snob (it's true) and he's noticed over the years, the flavor of the fish offered in all restaurants has degraded. I have no problems getting him to come here (except when he's worried about money). The salad dressing is quite good...more of a creamy dressing then my ultimate favorite (at Sushi Zono). They're teriyaki sauce is excellent, and they're careful with the meat to ensure that the gristle and fat are removed (my daughter can seek it out faster than...well, we won't go there...ok, a politician to a PAC donation). What is surprisingly enjoyable is the chicken salad. It's well balanced, the dressing is very good, the chicken is always moist...and well, I can't put my finger on it but it's always very very good. I haven't tried their bottomless saki yet. I usually get the Sapporo which is nice and cold. Their tempura is light and crisp and not greasy. Their gyoza is good (not my fav...again sushi zono for that, but I do very much enjoy how crispy they make them) And I have found the service really positive and warm. read more

Trying to find a place to eat, my husband and I stumbled upon this little gem. Being that they were closing in 30 minutes, the lady invited us in. We quickly ordered and was served our meal. We ordered edamame which came in a big bowl, CA roll, golden CA roll, crunch roll which they topped it with extra, extra chrunchies, dragon roll and miso soup. All this food and it arrived to our table quickly. Everything was delicious as we ate as fast as we could. The lady was very nice and said take your time. This restaurant used to be good, but I had an awful experience tonight. I ordered a roll and three orders of Nigiri for takeout. We decided to treat ourselves and got a special of O-toro. While the other sushi was fine, the O-toro was literally grey and mushy. I should have known better but put it into my mouth, and it was immediately disgusting. This fish was old, and anyone preparing it should have recognized that it was unfit to serve. The color was wrong, smell was bad, and texture was wrong. I've been a customer of this restaurant for years, but when you serve a customer food that is so obviously wrong, you break their trust. I would not trust this restaurant in their care of their fish. If they were willing to put this kind of awful fish on Nigiri, I don't even want to imagine what they are putting into their roles. I called to ask for a refund but no one picked up (maybe they were done for the night). In any event, I won't go there again and they really should be ashamed of themselves for serving old fish. read more

I have dined here various times in the past 9 years and I'm still a fan. The employees are extremely friendly here, sushi is good and they have a great selection of entrees. I am a bit confused to why this place is rated average. I have been treated extremely well here and food has always been good. I recently had the beef shiyaki and loved it! My entree came with salad, and rice, my entree was a broth with glass noodles, beef, mushrooms, tofu, onions, and other veggies. They also gave me edamame at the beginning of my meal and a generous slice of an orange at the end of my meal. They also have udon dishes, teriyaki dishes, donburi, tempura, shioyaki, and of course the typical sushi & sashimi. I like this Japanese restaurant because it offers a variety, its reasonable, its not too far from me, and they are super friendly. She got the salmon teriyaki and California rolls while I got their special combination bento which came with three pieces of nigiri sushi (tuna, salmon and shrimp). My bento had spicy chicken and California rolls. In my opinion the chicken was not as spicy as I would have liked. Otherwise they gave us large portions so it left us satisfied. This place got some rave reviews in my neighborhood. So far I haven't found my GoTo /sushi place in the South Bay. good pricing for nigori sake is$8 and a large our of Chardonnay $12. The sushi was about $4 a piece. The special rolls are like $16-20, but they are plenty big. I'd say one plus an order of sushi (2 pcs) would be a full meal here. The sushi was good. Straight up fish on rice. Some people prefer a little lemon or something additional, but I'm a purist in that regard. I did not care for the "'first Date" roll, due to the sauce they put on it. Overpowered the fish. The Camden roll was much better and pretty similar without said sauce. Super friendly, good service, neighborhood place, including several people stopping in for take-out. I may or may not be back, but first I have like 2 other local places to try.... BTW, the do have upgraded laminated menus with pictures and descriptions. read more

Unfriendly waitresses keep coming to ask you to pay and to sign the bill around 1:50, because they gonna close at 2:00pm.
