This was my second attempt to visit Shopsin's. The line was too long with a limited personal schedule during the first try. It was a Saturday at 2pm. I got the last seat available at the counter but seats started emptying during my stay. I ordered the Blisters On My Sisters with a level 7 of spiciness. It took awhile to prepare the meal but I had nowhere to be. I enjoyed my meal while listening to a dance version of I've Heard It On The Grapevine and watching pedestrian traffic. The spice was easily manageable with the taste being varied depending on where the next bite came from. I served myself tap water which I technically didn't need. read more

Kenny Shopsin was a genuine New Yorker as proven by his devotion to our New York Mets. Kenny was more than a bit unique and Shopsin's General Store is a testimony to his unique brand of culinary magic. Shopsin's is not where you go for fine dining. Nor do you simply go to Shopsin's for your basic fare. You go to Shopsin's for a truly great breakfast or lunch. Real food for real foodies is the way I think about it. Shopsin's has just re-opened in the "new" Essex Market and it has a terrific new space with more tables and counter space. Sadly, Kenny Shopsin recently passed so he did not get to see his new space or the long lines waiting for a chance to eat his food. Shopsin's is now run by his daughters and one of his sons. No doubt Kenny is very proud of them continuing his legacy. read more

Don't bother with Shopsin's. Apparently they don't need the business. My friend heard about this gourmet greasy spoon, and invited me to brunch. Walking in, she snapped a few photos, annoying a seated employee sporting a Shopsin's shirt, who asked her to stop. As we went to a table, the same guy said, "You're not sitting down." When we asked if he was serious, he made it clear he was, and that we were not eating there. Stunned, we bid him (actually owner Kenny Shopsin) goodbye. What just happened? According to their site, no parties larger than four will be served. We didn't know that - it was six of us - and no one told us when we were ejected. Shopsin can run his place any way he pleases, but why abandon tact? Blunt behavior can add divey charm to a place, but I find it confusing that customers aren't given a chance to adapt to house rules - our incident wasn't an isolated one. I'm certain Shopsin's cooking is ambrosial (they're popular for a reason), but there are other fine places to brunch, without the attitude. read more

What happens when you're on Death Row and can't decide on your last meal? You impose your dying wish and ask for Kenny Shopsin. He's known for saying, "There's a sexual friction that occurs when you put the wrong food in the wrong dish. That's the basis of fusion cooking." He'd be able to make your dream of a loaded baked potato pizza or Southern BBQ banana-split a reality. But if he was the official gastronomer of the Green Mile...I'd have to kill a muthafucka to have brunch. My entrance was announced by a crash of pots and pans so loud my eardrums tried to meet in the center of my head. The proprietor was passed out and using a rusty folding chair as an ottoman. The dining room is decorated like the cell of a 16 year old inmate (NY sports memorabilia, WWF action figures, seven different calendars of women in various stages of undress). Sitting at one of the three chairs facing the kitchen is like sitting in the front row of a gentleman's club, you get loads of attention. Dr. Shopin prescribed plenty of water, two breakfasts and told me where I could stick my phone rather than calling him in the morning -- ABC: fluffy scrambled eggs and sliced breakfast sausage with a chicken schnitzel garnish that had a mild fennely flavor. Mazik Jewmima: 3 layers of French toast stuffed with soft poached eggs, pumpkin silver dollar pancakes and bacon marmalade made with onions caramelized with Vermont maple syrup. 'Mazik' is Yiddish for trickster, and the cheeky cook that made mine hid not one but three eggs in different parts of the meal which reminded me of one of the riddles in J.R.R. Tolkien's Hobbit -- Q: "A box without hinges, key, or lid, yet golden treasure inside is hid" A: "an Egg" But first Zach the cook/son asked, "What in the name of Fucking, Austria (a real place BTW) is a Mazik Jewmima!?" To which Kenny replied, "Oh I changed it this morning, look on the menu." Zach, "I think you have Alzheimer's cuz you called this same dish something else last week with ham instead of bacon." Kenny, "Well I think you should eat a diyak wrapped in bacon." Just then I was about to put a forkful of deep-fried bacon in my mouth and had to put it down until my brain mopped that image from my mind. My buddy's breakfast was made by Kenny and mine by Zach, the guy to my right asked which was better? That's like choosing between the most beautiful woman in the world and the most prolific adult star. His was elegant and had exceptional taste, mine was dirty and memorable. I always wondered who was the sucker that paid the suggested 25% tip and now I know...it's me. It was the first (and probably the last) time I've ever done it. Especially at a restaurant with such snarky service, that turns away groups larger than 4 and until recently was CASH ONLY. I wanted to show my my appreciation monetarily because I could barely form a sentence after the meal. If I lived any closer, I'd think about it all the time and I wouldn't stay at home for long. I just hope I lived long enough to eat all 900 things on their menu. If my GP got a hold of my Basic Metabolic Panel directly after this meal, I bet he'd sit me down and give me the whole "You have this long to live" speech. "That's a lotta food man!" Thanks for the heads up, Luke. I'm glad I listened to Luke, the cool waiter, even though I was sad to tell him to cancel the Tater Titties as I was very intrigued to try them. I came a day earlier only to find a huge line, and it was already after 1 PM, so I just left knowing that they close for the day at 2 PM. This time, I came much earlier and got here at 11 AM, only to still find a decent-sized line. It's a good thing when there's a bit of wait though, because it gives you the time you desperately need to study this overwhelming, panic-inducing menu. I knew I had to try the Mac & Cheese Pancakes, but I also wanted to try a bunch of other stuff since there are so many great choices, so I went with one of the Three Step Happy Breakfast Trays, A30: Duck Gyro, Chipotle Blisters On My Sisters and the Mac & Cheese Pancakes ($27, which sounds like a lot of money, but this is a TON of food). Each of the three "steps" was practically a meal in and of itself, and all were incredibly delicious. The gyro was overflowing with juicy duck, the "blisters on my sisters" had some nice kick to go with the great fried egg on top of tasty rice and beans, and the generous stack of 4 or so Mac & Cheese Pancakes were just awesome. I started to get short of breath and even I couldn't finish this. I was a bit full though already from the Slutty Shake, which consists of pistachio, pumpkin and peanut butter ($10, which is a lot of money for this. But it is really delicious). This was super thick and served with one of those huge straws like the ones you get at bubble tea places, so you could inhale some delicious chunks of pistachio along with the peanut butter and pumpkin. Very pricy, but very good. Lastly, everybody talks about how good the Ebelskivers are, so I had to try some of the Chocolate Ebelskivers ($10) even though I couldn't even finish my breakfast tray. These are amazing - you get 7 little doughnut-hole type things, with a big pile of whipped cream to go with them. They are piping hot, and filled generously with a ton of gooey chocolate. Make sure you get these, no matter how full you are, which you will be if you order the right stuff. This place is a dream come true for a fat kid that grew up in the 80's (e.g. me). Amazing gut-busting heart-palpitating food, sweet wrestling trading cards on the walls and Ghostbusters and other toys everywhere, this is one of the most unique, delicious and fun dining experiences you could ever ask for. Though the wait can be extremely long, even once you get seated and it takes a whole lot longer for the food to come out, it's a pretty entertaining wait. The owner, Kenny, sits in a chair in the middle of the tiny restaurant, and just shouts at the kitchen every now and then with completely random thoughts, often thoroughly expletive-laden. For example, he started talking about different colors he likes and how we decided to go with an orange background for the Orange Julius section of the menu today when he printed them out from his computer. Often the cooks are understandably busy and shout back that they can't hear him, which he usually can't hear, which leads to even more confusion and random shouting. Good times. If it weren't for the wait and the unpredictability of it all, I would be back way more often. I could come everyday for a year and still find more great stuff to try. But given both the price and the detriment to your health, this is more like a once in a while type meal. I'm counting down the time until I can come back though. read more

Went in for lunch on a Thursday afternoon and I'd have to say this was the cruelest and most unprofessional and cruel staff I have seen in NYC in a long time. (Which says a lot). The woman working the counter and seating people was downright mean to everyone I saw her dealing with. The peak of this horrible lunch at Shopsins came from when the CHEF & Woman working the counter both verbally assaulted a female diner sitting at the counter. They called her horrible obscenities, including calling her a BITCH...yelling and screaming at her until she broke down and had to leave. All the woman did was ask if her food would be ready soon, because she had to return to work. Everyone in the restaurant was utterly shocked by the mistreatment of a person like this. Everyone's food seemed to be taking a very long time. When my food showed up, it was soggy and inedible. I waited 30min for overpriced eggs. I wish I had walked out when they were screaming at the other diner, but I think I was in shock. Shopsin's is a unique charming restaurant that is unlike anywhere else I've ever eaten. Even if you don't need glasses to read, you should find a pair and bring them to read this crazy menu. It is loaded with everything you could possibly want and imagine. Complex and simple at the same time, you are wild Shopsins! I've been here twice and want to come back so much more, especially now that they have moved into the new Essex Market and are all sparkley and new. Be prepared that this place is small ( it's literally within a market) and therefore you might have to wait awhile; but TRUST when I say it is worth it. I didn't get kicked out! My boyfriend and I had lunch here on the afternoon of Valentines Day (it was an exceptional food day for me, I gotta tell ya.) Located in the Essex Market, Shopsin's is legendary. I had no idea who Kenny Shopsin was when I entered the restaurant, but knew after leaving that I had to know more about him. Anywho, we were seated, but immediately told about the 4 check maximum, so we were unable to order immediately. It have me time to take in everything. All the knickknacks on the walls, the cursing coming from Kenny's son, and some less-than-complementary comments to some regulars. It was all part of the ambiance and I was hooked. I'm glad they gave us time to look over the menu while not taking our order. Have you seen this thing?! You could eat there every day for 6 years and not have anything on the menu twice. I didn't know they tell people to get out (this is putting it politely.) Once we were able to order, we were told about not being able to share one order, so we were force to each order an entree. My boyfriend ordered a platter that had a duck gyro, bacon Mac and cheese, and banana brown sugar pancakes. Holy deliciousness batman. Duck gyro was crazy. Bacon Mac was equal parts bacon to noodles, so good. And the pancakes. Oh my god the pancakes. Best I've ever had in my life, by far. This is for sure the best breakfast spot in the city -- creative breakfast and lunch items and staff with distinct, lively personality. This place couldn't be better. The two times I've been here, I've gotten something with mac and cheese pancakes, but eventually, I will branch out and evade their deliciousness for more variety. I've had tastes of the Pete sandwiches, and those have all been delicious as well (the cheesy garlic bread base is perfect). Small note that I love that the coffee is self serve; I personally find it a lot easier to just get more coffee when wanted. Chubby 1: A delicious mound of mac and cheese pancakes with eggs and bacon throughout, completely coated in cheddar cheese -- best eaten with maple syrup and the various sauces available here. This dish is very similar to the Mo Betta -- albeit a little smaller and presented differently. Wow, worst experience ever. We waited for 20 minutes with menus without our food order being taken. So, we asked to pay for our iced tea so that we could leave. As I was trying to pay, I asked why the slow service. The waitress (in a Selena t-shirt and a Seinfeld hat) copped a huge attitude. She threatened to hit me in the head (no kidding). Shopsin's is tucked inside Essex market, which feels very European (y'know, little cafes attached to market booths). But that is exactly where the similarities to a European cafe end. Firstly, the aesthetic is very kitschy, with knick-knacks, weird posters, and tchotchkes hanging around everywhere. (Something out of American Pickers, for sure). Also, if you come here, prepare to be chastised (especially if you ask for any substitutions). Don't be scared: it's their schtick--but if you don't know that, it can be quite jarring when the waiter drops an f-bomb or insults you for taking too long to choose a meal (my friend didn't know service was like this and was scarred for life after the meal!) The menu is huge. Like, bigger than Cheesecake Factory huge. But with the same heart-attack inducing options for sure; definitely artery-clogging with crazy combinations of foods that you would never think to put together. And the food is really good, despite the gimmicky choices! My friends and I split the "Zesty" (duck sliders with grilled onions, scrambled eggs, and cheese, with two mac and cheese pancakes as buns... yes, mac and cheese pancakes!--served with maple syrup) and the OG slutty pancakes (which were regular pancakes stuffed with peanut butter, pumpkin, and pistachio and served with sweet ricotta). Some people like to say that these are the best pancakes ever; personally, I think it's the fillings/toppings that make them a novelty--they're good, and they're definitely the most unique pancakes I've ever had, but I wouldn't say they're the BEST. However, I was skeptical about the mac & cheese pancakes, but they were better than I expected. I've been converted into a believer. Will definitely have to bring some other friends/family here. Located inside the Essex Street Market you'll find this restaurant tucked in the corner of the market. Only a handful of tables and a small kitchen it's amazing the amount of quality food they produce out of there. Wait wasn't too long for brunch on marathon weekend and we were soon situated and going over the immense menu. Quite confusing to read but once you get the hang of it you can zero in on your craving for your meal. I'm a fan of the Mac an cheese pancakes which is exactly as it sounds mac n cheese mixed into pancake batter for wonderful savory discs. I also got the chorizo omlette. Cooked perfectly with quality chorizo. it matched up well with the house hot sauce. Spicey with a kick. The pancakes also matched well with the maple syrup they provided. All in personal size bottles. With a strong cup of joe it made for a great brunch. We ended it with eblskivers, the caramel flavored. Sooooo... how has this place not been on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives? I feel like this eclectic little diner tucked away in the Essex Street Market is the type of place that makes that show as interesting as it is. Maybe they are just trying to preserve their exclusivity to avoid having annoying tourists ruin it for the regulars. Lines are long, the waiter (yes singular) lacks a big personality, the menu is huge and confusing, but there are very few items on this menu that make you say, "Oh that is something I normally get, I wonder how it tastes here." That is because their menu is built for more for the daring individual. You want a duck gyro for lunch? Come here. You want pancakes with mac and cheese or s'mores mixed in to their batter? Then come here. From their offerings to the names of the dishes (Pancakes are called Sluttys which is somewhat appropriate as it is located next to a sex-ed art gallery), you are entering a brunch world unlike anything you have ever experienced before. I also recommend the poutine and blisters on my sisters (sunnyside up egg over rice, beans, veggies, and a slew of other options for ingredients mixed in). Buyers beware: Long lines so get here early. Only one credit card allowed per table. Look over the menu before heading here because that thing is daunting. Shopsin's- Essex Marketplace-New York City 5.0 As I found myself in the Big Apple getting some artwork on the canvas that is my back, and a man has to eat, I thought I might get some work in as well, killing two birds with one stone as it were. Grabbing my ever-present random name generator, I punched in my city and Shopsin's scrawled across my screen. Grabbing a cab, I headed towards the Lower East Side. After being shown a table and handed menus, I relaxed and began to peruse the said menu. 125 different kinds of pancakes? Well, we all know I love griddle cakes and so it was off to the races so to speak. A male human soon approached our table and presented us with a very bad attitude. He literally refused to help us until my dining partner got down and dirty with him. As this transpired all I could think was it sure is a good thing we here at Todd, The Big Boy Dining Out, only rate on the execution of edibles or this place would tank in my review. Thankfully, our server took our order for Lemon Poppy, Cookie Puss and Mac and Cheese (yes, you read that correctly) pancakes. As he scurried off to the kitchen, I glanced around the place. It was clean, orderly and packed--all good signs of the things to come. It wasn't too long before our server (his name escapes me) was seen returning with our order. Grabbing my silverware, I turned towards the feast with alacrity. As one can see by the pictures everything looked amazing and if it tasted a quarter of how it looked, I knew I was in for a real gastronomical treat. First up on the palate was the Lemon Poppy pancakes. These were light, fluffy, cooked to perfection and amazingly flavorful. The lemon flavor was such that it had to be from fresh lemon juice and rind. These were truly some of the best flapjacks I have ever had. Next up was the Cookie Puss cakes, This consisted of two Oreo cookie pancakes, marshmallow fluff and Frosted Flakes. One would think that after one bite diabetes would set in, but despite all the sugar in the ingredients they were not overly sweet. In fact, if I had a ten-star rating, these would get it that is how good they were. As the Lemon Poppy flannel cake, these were light, fluffy and grilled to perfection. Sadly, we have come to the last item up for review, the Mac and Cheese slapjacks. When you start with homemade Mac and Cheese, as this obviously was, you can't go wrong. This might sound like a strange menu combination, I mean who would think of adding Mac and Cheese to a pancake? Maybe the same person who came up with the delectable combo of Chicken and Waffles? I have been kicked out of Shopsin's before; but Kenny Sr. did it with charm and character- it was almost fun to get bounced. Today when I was kicked out, it was just silly. The place was empty and we didn't violate the (questionable) rules; they were rude for sport because they think it makes them "cool". The place has lost it's soul, and their stupid antics is not bringing it back. I can't knock the food, it's good. But if you go you just have to have backup plans. The serving portions were enormous; and the price was very reasonable! The breakfast sandwich--Egg, Cheese on a Rol--was so large I shared it with my husband. It was tasty--not greasy. The coffee is self-serve; very good and hot. The space is small, but we felt comfortable sitting at the bar. Melinda and the Head Chef were very gracious and congenial. This small resturant is located in the corner of the grocery store. Second the pricing here on the dishes are a bit much. Expect to spend 55 to 65 for breakfast for two with coffee. I had the fidel skillet under the blisters on my sister's area of the menu. This skillet was layered with yummy refried beans, cheese, egg and other goodness. I absolutely loved all of the hot sauces they brought to the table. So good. My wife got the snitzel bowl which was pretty disappointing. Visually it was very off putting. It looked as if they scraped the scraps from the remaining plates into a bowl and lined the bowl with snitzel. Yeah kinda gross. Look, Shopsin's is an experience as much as it is a restaurant. You have to know what you're walking into or else you will end up as part of the entertainment. Abide by the rules and you'll be fine. Those rules being no parties greater than four, each person orders a meal, no substitutions, and no talking on the cell phone. It also helps if you're not a vegan. With his long legacy of kicking people out, I was nervous sitting at the counter right in front of the legend himself, Kenny Shopsin, but I soon realized I had nothing to worry about. Kenny was deep in conversation with another patron, and I immediately felt at home in their quirky little space. I already pored over the menu before I came and wanted the sliders, which I had heard were the best in the city. I'm no slider expert but these were definitely tasty and very filling. I slathered them with hot sauce (there are six homemade choices in a little rack at each table), and they tasted particularly amazing with the smokey deep red one. Yum. They're also one of the more affordable things on the menu. The best part is the theatrics of eating there. Towards the end of my meal, Kenny's son, who mans the kitchen, came out and screamed expletives at his dad for misplacing something in the prep station. What followed is not family-friendly enough to write here but was super entertaining and totally playful on their part. Kenny made a wisecrack about his son's sex life and just like that, it was over. My only complaints are that the prices are pretty high, and the place is tiny. Expect to wait for a table unless you get there at 10am or earlier. The service can definitely be snarky but as long as you respect their rules, you'll be fine. I actually quite liked the waiter. The well-meaning Denver native next to me tried ordering off the menu (avocado toast) and got a rude reply, but she should have known better. This is not the place to order avocado toast. Absolutely terrible experience with one of the staff members. We never even ate or sat down we came inn specifically to eat there as per recommendations and the pictures we see every time we pass Essex market. Well we walk in and are greeted with if you want to sit down you can't bring that outside drink in her(coffee we just got from another kiosk) when we ask why as at least give us a reason she would not then we asked again and she said "what do you not get I don't understand" Thanks for the no explanation and unwarranted attitude needless to say we will never step foot in there again as long as the women behind the counter works there. Finally made it here with no wait. Maybe it's because I got there 15 minutes before hey opened. Tried one of the "Pete's" with chorizo poached eggs and cilantro. Their poached egg game was off but they knew it and told me they would give me better ones. It was delicious and enough food for 2 people. Aggressively rude service - not something anyone would want to wake up to. Bad experience began when they asked to see our proof of vaccination and called it a "disease pass" (red flag for me if anyone calls it that). Very off-putting service in general. Not ADA compliant. They make up there own discriminatory rules. Would not recommend this "diner" to anyone. (I've been a LES resident for over 10 years, I rarely come across brash people like this). read more
