A friend in the area raved about the fresh baked bread that they make only on the weekends and we sampled some for dinner the night before. So on the way back, we stopped by and got some fresh produce (eggplants and zucchini) and the amazing sourdough herb loaf by way of Honor Box donation. We stayed nearby in Coloma and were looking for a good local spot to grab breakfast before getting back on the road when we stumbled upon Sierra Rizing. From the moment we walked in, we were welcomed by the cozy atmosphere and the smell of fresh baked goods. It didn't take long to realize this wasn't just another café--it was a place the community truly loves. I ordered the sausage breakfast wrap along with an Apple Pie Chai and a slice of their handmade Cranberry Orange Bread, and everything was absolutely delicious. The breakfast wrap was hearty and filling with two different kinds of sausage, fluffy scrambled eggs, seasoned potatoes, and melted cheese all wrapped in a soft tortilla. It was the perfect breakfast before hitting the road. The Cranberry Orange Bread was one of the highlights of my visit. I had the chance to chat with the owner, Teal, who shared that everything in the bakery is made from scratch. She even told me she doesn't waste any part of the orange--they incorporate the rind into the bread, which gives it such a bold, authentic orange flavor. It was incredibly moist, full of fresh cranberries, and every bite tasted homemade. I was looking for something with just a little caffeine, so the Apple Pie Chai immediately caught my eye. It's made with chai, apple juice, and breve, which sounded like such a unique combination. I expected it to be overly sweet, but it was perfectly balanced with just the right amount of sweetness and gave me the little morning pick-me-up I was looking for without being too strong. Beyond the food, the atmosphere is what really makes Sierra Rizing special. The café has such a cozy, homey feel with local artwork and handcrafted items for sale throughout the dining room, beautiful artwork and photographs on the walls, and plenty of seating inside. There's also a gorgeous covered outdoor patio that would be perfect for enjoying breakfast on a warm morning. One thing that really impressed me was how knowledgeable the staff was about the ingredients in their pastries. They were happy to answer questions about ingredients and allergens, which I know many people will appreciate. They even sell homemade peanut butter wheat dog treats, and my Goldendoodle, Bailey, absolutely devoured hers! I also loved talking with Teal, who told me she's been serving the community from this location for 26 years. You can truly feel the passion and dedication that's gone into building this place. Throughout my visit I noticed several customers being greeted by name, which speaks volumes about the welcoming community they've created. It's the kind of place where locals gather, and as a traveler, it was so nice to experience that genuine hometown atmosphere. Whether you're stopping in for breakfast, coffee, tea, a homemade pastry, or a slice of pie, Sierra Rizing is well worth the visit. They offer an impressive variety of freshly baked pastries and pie slices alongside several savory breakfast favorites, so there's truly something for everyone. This is the kind of locally owned café that's becoming harder to find--filled with kind people, exceptional homemade food, and a genuine sense of community. My family and I stumbled upon this little jewel after a long day of rafting and seeing a sign for a place that said they served coffee. Upon entering two ladies in the front welcomed us warmly. My eyes were immediately drawn to the deliciousness that called to me from behind the glass case. OMGosh for starters there was pecan pie, cherry pie, apricot and peach pie, 4 berry pie, the forever classic apple pie, did I mention they have fresh baked pies? But wait.....there was more yumminess to be had. Brownies, lemon bars, some kind of coconut bars, chocolate biscotti, chocolate earthquake cookies, braided something or other pastries with fruit in them, flourless chocolate cake, plain croissants, maple pecan croissants, quiche, some turnover/calzone thingies, fresh baked loaves of breads - some with garlic, some with cheese. My family and I couldn't decide which pie to get and when my daughter asked the nice lady (later learned she was the owner) if she could get 1/2 of the apple pie and 1/2 of the cherry pie, she said she could make it happen. So along with the 1/2 and 1/2 we got a pulled pork calzone, a meatball marinara calzone, a ham and swiss quiche (for morning), a chocolate biscotti, a loaf of cheese bread and of course the original reason I went in......a white chocolate mocha! And just in case any doubters might say, "sure everything looked and tasted good, you just finished a long day of rafting." Alls I have to say to that is I KNOW it's good because we went BACK the very next morning to get more goodies to bring home with us and as I sit here back home and Yelp is my witness......I'm nibbling on a lemon bar AND a chocolate earthquake cookie and I may or may not have eaten a maple pecan croissant during the 3 hour drive home. This is a tough place to work at, with a million tasks to do all at once (literally) for the girls behind the counter and a line out the door many mornings a week. Customers ought to understand this. The girls (usually only one or two running the counter) are trying their absolute best to make every single customer happy. You show them respect, they will be eternally grateful. I own a whitewater rafting company on the American in Lotus, and I've used Sierra Rizing to cater a number of special events that we held. Simply put....Teal and her crew have consistently done an excellent job for us. The food has always been awesome, the service beyond reproach and the desserts....well....nothing short of amazing!
