We were here for a few days or R&R mini VaCa. After being traveling most of the day we decided to keep it close and have dinner within the resort. We decided on the Signature Grill vs. the bar area The stars reflect are mainly the customer service for this review. The hostess demeanor was that of a less than sincere, almost liked it was not in her nature to be cheery, thus forcing herself to be enthusiastic. Then came our waiter/server. We were not too sure if he was trying to humor us with his dry weird humor but we felt he was trying to be funny in a odd-ball smart ass sort of way. Not appreciated. I asked about the sides for the entree I ordered, his attitude was very "that's just the way it is" type of attitude and was overall a cocky server. Hard for me to believe that anyone visiting this restaurant would appreciate this style of attitude. Food came in a decent period of time and the burger I ordered was very filling, came with homemade potato chips. Good serving for the price (+ 1 star) The only highlight to the service that the young man who was bussing the table was really nice and helpful, He was easier to get the attention of vs. our server guy, he out shined the server by 110%. I hope the got a portion of the servers tips! Will we go back? Probably not. For being a resort restaurant and for waiter who relies on tips he must not need the money because his attitude put a damper on our dinner experience. read more

I have eaten here out of convenience twice. Both times it was disappointing. Breakfast was ok but highly overpriced. Lunch was very disappointing, order came out wrong and I told them of a food allergy and my plate came out with that food on there. Returned it and seems they just took it off the plate. Had to send it back again because it had touched my other food. Positive for this place is the service, they have great servers that are on top of their game. My family was here for a visit and we went to Signature Grill to celebrate. We spent nearly $800 on dinner and while the food and service were fine, I would have expected far better than fine for that kind of money. Nobody was wowed, which I feel is a reasonable expectation. This place had some creative and delicious food but somehow the dishes and operation are incomplete or a bit amiss. This is a Four Star restaurant with two left feet so I gave it a Three Stars. Everything is quite expensive. Beautiful place with world class views of the city lights. The steak was perfectly cooked and of the highest grade. The tamale that it came with had a wonderful spicy flavor, but the corn used was far too sweet. And where was the veg with our dinner? None at all. Out of balance. Lobster fritters were terrific, but some of ours were burned. That over-powered the entire dish. Not even the sauce could disguise the burned taste. The delicate flavor of the lobster, of course, was lost. Dessert. Same deal. Tasty raspberry creme brulee in a large portion, but the creme was not set. Service was so so. We sat far too long unattended throughout our meal. A couple other things bothered us. When were arrived, we were asked if we were stayed in the hotel then I was asked my name and how to spell it. We were not staying at the hotel. I felt punished for that. Although the place was well more than half empty on a friday night, we were then seated in THE worst and THE smallest table in the house with a small piece of paper between us. I picked it up and read it. As I did, the unfriendly hostess said "that's for your server." Hum. Is this some sort of fraud control or the latest inconvenience in controlling terrorists? Whatever it was, we did not like it. We'll try it again, however, just in case it was experience was an aberration and just in case they get their act together. read more

My friends stayed at the hotel and not wanting to leave and lose our parking spot, we decided on the Signature Grill. We sat on the patio because the weather was nice and our waitress was very friendly. We ordered our drinks and it came quickly. However when my friend and I asked for an orange slice for our blue moon, it took a long time to get it and we had to ask someone else. I'm assuming it must have been busy or she must have forgot. When asking about the menu, the waitress was very knowledgable which helped out a lot. We got our appetizers really quick and they were really delicious. Our food came by quick too and everyone seemed to be happy with their food. I had the posole which was really good and filling. Overall the place was nice. It overlooked the desert landscape which was nice. Not really something I would look forward coming back to but it was a nice experience. read more

I haven't been to signature grill since before the renovation. The updated decor looked very pleasing to the eye but I do miss seeing all the pastries in the front by the hostess stand which they had before the remodel . okay , let's get to the food ... Sadly I was expecting a whole different menu because we checked the Marriott website and saw signatures menu on there . We were excited and hyped our selves for certain menu selections on our way to dinner but when we got to the table and reviewed the menu it came to our surprise that the menus were different . So , for a second we were disappointment but found other menu selections that caught our eye . Bacon wrapped scallops and scrimp with grilled pineapple and calabacitas was .... am-azing !! I was perfectly cooked and the sweetness of the pineapple brought out flavors in the seafood . My husband got lamb and scallops, he enjoyed it very much and stated it was cooked just right . The issues we had with dinner were slight bit dull kinda bugged us .... The menu needs to be updated on the website to prevent confusion , the table bread needs to simmer down on the salt . Way to salty, overload of salt and the Guacamole and chips appetizer needs more chips . Not enough . We left a glob of guacamole due to limited chips . Otherwise delicious meal ! read more

Have you ever been to a restaurant for lunch, and it was so exquisite, you came back for dinner? Well right about now, I'm already thinking about breakfast at the Signature Grill! We are light eaters, but love a wide range of "got to try that" appetizers, and salads with local produce or novel ingredients. On our first visit to the Signature Grill we tried the avocado hummus with fresh homemade tortillas and the hibiscus dressing on light salads for lunch - Amazing! We were back for dinner, and adored the burrata caprese & the field green salad with cornbread croutons. The gelato trio of Belgian chocolate, vanilla bean and salted caramel was heavenly. But what is really over the top at the Signature Grill is the view & the staff. The resort view and distant vistas from the Grill are a desert treat in the daytime, and sparkle with city lights at night. We savored our light fare and were treated to a view for hours. We stayed the equivalent time of enjoying a four course meal, with just a few appetizers, salads & dessert. The staff was exquisite in determining the sweet spot for being available at just the right instant for questions or service, and providing us with the time & space to enjoy a long, leisurely romantic dinner. Korina, was a delight while she served our lunch. She was very captivating in her descriptions of the Sonoran desert, and local hiking opportunities. Wilson, the supervisor at both lunch and dinner casually stopped by at each meal. He was engaging and real. It is hard to describe, but, they were both eloquent and personal. Wow, this is a terrific buffet. A bit pricey, but the buffet includes juice, coffee, and custom items (like eggs done the way you want them) from the kitchen. The buffet itself has breakfast items, an omelet station, pastries, and Mexican items like (my favorite!) pozole. The Starr Pass resort is nestled in the mountains and is slightly higher in elevation than the city. This setting provides a nice space away from the city noise as well as a super view at night. The Signature Grill is located downstairs from the lobby, near the exterior patio. (Drinks on the patio are a good place to start - it's casual, and there are heaters and fire pits running to keep people warm. Don't be in a rush because patio service is slow.) The Signature Grill looks like a standard resort restaurant (which generally means I expect poor tasting food for a high price), but this place stands out because of it's food. On a recent visit, I had three items. To start, I split the jalapeño cheddar cornbread salad. It was a delicious salad (not at all hot/spicy) with fresh ingredients and it's served with a beautiful bread basket. The basket had 3 different items, ranging from thin/long pretzel-shaped pieces, to a large cracker that you break off into pieces and some individual traditional-shaped bread. Each item in the bread basket had unique flavors - not just the standard white or wheat rolls you might expect. I would get this again in a heartbeat. The main course was the Paella. Tip: It's a large portion - be sure to split this. It had deep, rich flavors - in particular, I could taste the saffron and the seafood was very fresh. I might get this again, but would likely venture off and try something else, expecting the other dish to be just as tasty. The real star of the meal were the Churros. (Yes, I'm still addicted to them). I generally prefer the perfectly extruded churros with consistent texture. These are probably the first ones I've ever enjoyed that didn't have the perfect shape. The thickness was just about right (compared to the standard Disney/SeaWorld/SD Zoo park churros), and it had the nice crunch on the outside, as well as a generous dose of the cinnamon/sugar coating. It's served with two sauces - a fruit compote and a Iberra chocolate sauce (a Mexican chocolate). Mexican chocolate is slightly different in that it has cinnamon in it, and sometimes the sugar can be a bit more granular. In the dipping sauce form, you don't notice the more granular sugar, but you might notice the cinnamon - which pairs nicely with the churros. It was also served with a coffee crunch ice cream. The coffee flavor was nice to balance out all the sweet flavors on the plate, but its still sweet. We got about 12 small churros on the plate, which I'd say is about the same as 3+ full sized park churros. Given that you got dipping sauces and ice cream as well for $9, that's a great value. It's almost too much for two people, but you could split this easily with four people and still have gotten enough to satisfy the sweet tooth. I would get these again, even if I couldn't finish them all myself. :) Takeaway - tasty food, and don't leave without having the churros. read more

So the place was packed with conference attendees and very noisy. The atmosphere was elegant yet comfortable. Service was attentive and very helpful. We both ordered the filet medium, one came medium well the other rare, but both tender and juicy, with a delectable sauce, perfect finger potatoes, and grilled tomatoes. The Conn Creek Cab was wonderful. Did not care for the chocolate cake though. read more

We had a wonderful meal out on the terrace overlooking the resort. Our server Ashley created a wonderful dining experience, she helped us navigate the selections to align with our Low Carb diet plan. Our dinners were great and perfectly cooked, and I loved the thought put into the entire plating. Our drinks and desserts were truly the masterpieces though - AMAZING! Staying at the hotel with my family and we have eaten breakfast and dinner here every day. The servers are so nice, and not that creepy fake nice, really nice. We have sat outside each evening and watched the sunset while munching on those awesome chips/salsa/guacamole that you can order and drinking prickly pear margaritas- Heaven. My three kids ordered off the kid menu and each time get beautiful big portions of healthy food. The salmon was a hit as was the steak. So nice it's not just fries and a burger, although there are those as well as kids like what they like. I have never been jealous of a kids entree before but tonight we all agreed that my sons steak, potatoes and broccoli beat the rest of our dinners hands down (and my salmon was great). Breakfast was our favorite. We had the buffet which included the hot items from the regular menu. I had tamales and eggs that were so good. My husband raved about the pancakes and they had these teeny blueberry muffins that I would walk back to Tucson just to have. The selection was great and the price was really right on considering all you got. Again the service was friendly and attentive just like at dinner. Ate here with a girlfriend after going to the spa on a Sunday morning. It was so nice out and we were able to sit on the patio. We each got the buffet. She got the full one, and I got the smaller one. I ate so much berries, fruit, yogurt and granola! The granola was just so yummy! And the pastries were amazing. She wanted some eggs which is why she got the bigger buffet and said they were really good. Our waiter disappeared at the end of our meal, but we were able to flad down another waitress, tell her how to try and split our ticket (that had not come yet).. and gave her our cards. When looking for a nice little stay-cation, Starr Pass is always a treat to escape the dog days of summer. We usually come for a night or two every summer. This time we decided to give the Signature Grill a try for dinner. Had the white sangria (too sweet for my taste, nothing special), a beer and started with a Knife and Fork salad split into two portions. Butter lettuce, blue cheese, tomatoes and bacon made for a tasty dinner start. Then my husband and I split a burger (over cooked a bit but still okay, again nothing too special). Our daughter ordered the salmon off the children's menu. Pretty ample sized portion for a kid's item. She said it was pretty good. Now comes the best part...dessert. Ready? Get the churros! Don't hesitate. Just do it. Wow, crispy pillows of delicious air filled fluff. Served with a Mexican chocolate sauce, a fruit compote and coffee crunch ice cream (delicious in itself). We also had the roasted pineapple creme brûlée which also was a delightful treat. Creamy, not too sweet and a yummy flavor of fresh pineapple that you don't see often. I do not understand the negative reviews on this place. We went there for breakfast, and had good a-la-carte selections. The service was good and fast. I could even take some bacon for my cold buffet (if i had wanted to). They have a very good granola / yoghurt selection, plenty of juicy fresh fruit, croissants and smoked salmon + even a variety of pastries. We did not try the hot buffet. The view is great too. Downside is that self parking is at the other end of the hotel - quite a walk. In California you would pay much more for a treat like this. read more

My wife and I had breakfast there last weekend. Our omelets were acceptable but something as simple as toast tripped them up. We were asked want kind of bread we wanted for toast and both order the 12 grain bread. Our orders came up minus my toast. I was told it would be along soon. About 5 minutes later it was delivered to the table--BBR (burned beyond recognition). Didn't eat it of course. We were done and hadn't seen out waiter since we ordered. When he came to the table we pointed out the burned toast and he said we had the wrong bread, honey wheat bread (or something like that). How hard is that to get right? I blame management. read more

Staying at the resort and not wanting to leave to get dinner, our party of 6 was seated quickly and our kids ate free. The kids had a small buffet style meal of chicken strips and cheesy penne pasta. The little dessert table was full of jello, chocolate mousse cups and watermelon. It was great for the kids! The adults however had just MEH dinner. My husband ordered the burger and fries, and me and my niece had the Arrachera Salads. The steak had very little flavor, and it was very chewy. The salad was ok, but the portion seemed very small for a dinner serving. The burger was small too; the fries were great, but later on my hubby had a stomachache - and it came with sweet pickles... Ew. I don't think what we ordered was worth the $80 bill... They get three stars for the free kids meal. Oh and it's dark in there!! Bring a flashlight to read the menu! read more

For being a restaurant in a resort, it gets 3 stars. The bread that is served before the meal was average. I ordered the chicken mole. It was very flavorful. It came with a tamale. My husband ordered fish that was also good. To sum it up, the Signature grill has a little above average food that is over priced for what you are getting. Our server was very attentive and friendly. I think you eat there for convenience if you are staying at the hotel. We don't plan on returning unless Innis breakfast which i heard is good. Great breakfast spot, I really enjoy coming here on the weekends and hanging out on the patio. Place is dog friendly which is a huge plus. Kids under 5 eat free at the breakfast buffet as well, which is great when I go out with my friends who have children. We were staying at the hotel and had dinner here. The kids buffet was great for them and they enjoyed the selection of items. The New York Strip and corn entrée that both my wife and I had was very good. The steaks were cooked to a perfect mid-rare and the sauce was a perfect compliment to the steak. Though we are used to eating spicy food the corn's aioli had a good lick to it. The only down side to our visit was the only adequate service, it took a little too long for refills on our drinks. It was 15 minutes before anyone even brought us water. 20 minutes later we still had not one person come and even ask if we would like a cocktail, let alone take our order. One is a bit of a captive audience when staying at the resort. I would say that the space and views are very nice. The service is attentive if awkward at times. The food still has that Marriottness to it. I had a few lunches and one dinner here - and overall was a bit above average. If you are staying at the Starr Pass - it's an okay option. But, I can't say this would be a destination restaurant for non-guests. read more

Great food, great service, great view! Stayed there last week and had breakfast at the Signature Grill. Sat on the patio outside to take in the view. Our food was delicious, but what really stood out was the service from our server, Terry. He was fantastic... made good recommendations, allowed us to make a few changes, and was one of the most attentive servers I have ever had. On top of it, he was a super nice guy that we enjoyed talking to. Next time I am back in Tucson, I will definitely eat here again. read more

Came here for a birthday staycation, and ate at Signature Grill the first night. Started with chips and guac with salsa which was ok but lacking in flavor. I was a bit apprehensive about how our entrees might come out given how underwhelming the appetizer was, but was not disappointed - AT ALL! The short rib was TO DIE FOR! The meat was tender and flavorful, the cauliflower and gouda grits tied the whole thing together, and when I was done I thought I might cry because I was so sad the experience was over... I think I will have dreams about how delicious that was!! The server was very nice, and the view of Tucson at night was gorgeous. read more

On vacation from Austin. Very familiar with the JW Mariott. To a certain extent this is all about location, location, location. The views from the veranda are just stunning and romantic. The service is outstanding. The food is.....shall we say average to very good depending on the dish. This night we had big problems with the beef medallions which were undercooked (2X's) but management stepped in took care of it. The general consensus is that they aim to please and one more time.....there's no replacing this LOCATION. read more
