The food is delicious once you get it. I had lunch with a friend whom I invited to come to this place. I was a bit embarrassed to begin with. There was a change of shift as we ordered so big mix up on my food. Bottom line is I waited for over 45 minutes. Her food came out and I told her to eat. The server was failed to bring her an item she asked for and apologized and gave us the food on the house. I love to support small businesses, IF I ever go back I will not invite friends. Food was great. Chicken was fresh cooked while i waited. It could of used a little more seasoning. Not sure if they backed off because of article in the Stranger, but i have had their chicken several times usual seasoned well. The Greens will be a side I get every time I go. I've had their food a couple times for takeout, and it's not too bad at all. I really like the sides and the catfish has the proper flavor- Juicy with a muddy undertone, like it tastes down south. Don't get me wrong- the cleaner tasting catfish we get out here in the PNW is good but it doesn't have the same flavor, so wherever they source from it's gotta be flown in. I know muddy isn't a great descriptive word, it's more of an earthy taste that you have to experience for yourself. The breading is the proper cornmeal kind, nice and light and crispy. Sides like Mac n Cheese and Collards are good, but not outstanding- I found they were a little underseasoned for my taste, but I would say better than everything being way too salty, that way I can add salt/hot sauce if I like. The only dish I haven't really liked was the banana pudding. Don't get me wrong, it's a decent rendition, but I have been spoiled in my lifetime by a sweet lady from Mississippi that made the best desserts you'd ever had and her banana pudding is forever on a pedestal for me. The pecan pie was delicious, though! I think i'd like to eat in and see if my experience could improve even more! Since there is a lack of good soul food in Seattle i'd say Simply is a great bet if you are craving some good home cooking. read more

I heard about Simply Soulful a while back and the fella and I finally made it in this morning, a Saturday, for breakfast. We got there around 9:30am and had the place to ourselves, unusual for a weekend breakfast spot in the area (good for us, but I hope it gets busier for the business' sake!). The staff were incredibly friendly and warm, and everything is made from scratch. The restaurant is cozy and on the smaller side with 5-6 tables designed for 2-3 people. I ordered the veggie frittata which came with a large biscuit and homemade strawberry jam; the fella had a biscuit and egg sandwich with chicken andouille sausage and a side of grits. All of it was DELISH - we were especially blown away by the biscuits which were tender and, well, biscuit-y. The grits tasted like the real deal, not instant. The family feel to the restaurant was a refreshing break from the typical pseudo-upscale, bored hipster-run places Seattle is rife with (ok, so I love some of those too). It was fun to watch the gal behind the counter making a bunch of small sweet potato pies, which I'll have to try next time. Their banana pudding also looks out of this world. We'll definitely come back to try their lunch/dinner menu. As a vegetarian I felt there were enough options to choose from, though the menu contains mostly meaty items (understandable - what's a soul food restaurant without chicken and waffles?!). Their menu notes they serve breakfast all day which makes me happy. Glad to have this restaurant in our neighborhood. read more

Tucked away in the corner of the Madisonian building is a taste of southern comfort. In this quiet yet prosperous part of Madison Park I found myself in an unassuming space filled with lively characters. Everyone seemed to know each other and playfully poked fun at each other. That was tell #1 in determining how "soulful" the soul food was. Where you find people in good spirits you tend to find good food. Tell #2 of course was the actual taste of the food. I have to say this modest little spot really impressed me. I'm not an expert on southern/soul food but I do consider myself a fried chicken aficionado. The chicken portion of my chicken and waffles had a crispy yet light coating on the outside and was warm on the inside. The waffle was Belgian style which held up to the weight of the chicken that was piled on top; it never got soggy. We need more establishments like this in the metro part of Seattle. Southern food spots with low key surroundings but with loads of good vibes and awesome food to boot. I'm over the pretentiousness. Give me a place where I can feel like I'm hanging out at my auntie's or grandmas. If your looking for the same thing, this place is for you. read more

Coming from Birmingham, AL, has been hard to find good southern food on Seattle but this one is a keeper!! My husband and son had catfish and grits (didn't realize it came with scrambled eggs)- would get the catfish dinner with 3 pieces instead of 2, 2 sides next time. Their fried catfish was perfectly done came out piping hot, crispy cornmeal coating, tender fish on inside, and not overly salty. I had shrimp and grits- not too spicy with just the right amount of zing, sauce, and tender shrimp. The grits are to die for- so creamy! The cornbread didn't look super appetizing (brown like they might be dry) but don't be fooled! Light, airy, moist, sweet! Finished meal with pecsn pie and banana pudding- did not disappoint!! Would have given it 5+ stars for the food BUT service was terrible and slow. Only 3 tables of customers when we were there, 2 already had their food. We waited for 45-50 mins for our food, teen server seemed oblivious to our wait time, never commented or apologized. Maybe they had to catch, clean, and cook the catfish while we waited. Definitely will be back but will order TO GO! read more

Here's my experience in a nutshell:: Expensive and mediocre food and seemingly overwhelmed staff (just one person, although for awhile I was the only customer). I had their catfish at the Ballard seafood festival and It was amazing. waaaay! better than catfish corner now days. Today I order from CAVIAR.COM which is like uber eats but better. Again the food was amazing. fried chicken with black eye peas and mac and cheese. oh and a corm muffin. EVERYTHING! WAS ON POINT. Chick seasoned just right muffin moist, black eye peas were cooked just right not mushy, and that mac and cheese... could put some people's grandma's mac and cheese to shame. The food was absolutely delicious, but service left a bit to be desired. It took us 25 minutes to be served our food after we ordered, and only 1/2 of my BBQ sandwich had meat on it. They did give me more when I went back and asked for more. The entrees don't come with any sides, which at $11-13 a plate, one would expect some sides. A la carte sides run $4 a pop! Never have I been (what seemed intentionally) ignored in such a small space. We came in after reading good yelp reviews, engaged with the nice lady at the counter who told us to have a seat. We pleasantly replied and sat down, eager to have sweet tea and chicken and waffles. After about ten minutes (in which we DID get water), a table was sat RIGHT NEXT TO US. We then proceeded to watch them have their order taken. We waited patiently for another 20 minutes and after the ONLY waitress made absolutely no eye contact with us we got up and walked down the street to a vegan cafe where we had our food served and eaten in the time we waited at this joint. I am prepared to wait for good food, I am prepared to be patient in busy establishments, I am prepared to accept service that isn't spectacular with grace. However, I wasn't prepared to be ignored. Walking out of this place felt like a weight off my shoulders. I hope the best for them, but I was hurt and hungered by my experience there. read more

The Food is great, but the service is deplorable, unless if________ is there. We ordered the fried chicken wing dinners , which was actually party wings . For a family business, the way they treat black families , reflected the year 1800. The service is slow, so u have to wait for the food, which is worth the wait, but after u have been served and it is near closing, the staff starts spraying window cleaners, taking out the garbage bags , while passing around your table. The staff are clueless about how to treat customers. Furthermore the chef left the door open, freezing us out and basically telling us to get out ! I thought we were emancipated in 1862 but obviously this family operated business remains indoctrinated in the mistreatment of black people. Though the food is great, I will not pay to be abused, Let us see how long this black business last. Once again black people just don't get it! read more
