Stayed In Houston for a few days and came here everyday. I always ordered a cereal latte with oat milk. The atmosphere was charming and the drinks were good until today. My drink didn't taste right it was bitter and a little sour. I mentioned this to the barista they said they had made it exactly the same as always and that if I didn't like it I shouldn't order it again. I'm giving a two star because I had a great experience the first few times but I am very upset at how they handled this situation. read more

Four stars feels right for this place. Wanted a good cup of coffee. They don't have pour overs, choice was a cheap drip or an expensive siphon. Tried the siphon, $9 for coffee. It was very good but maybe not as good as a pour over. Bit too bitter, not quite "hipster" coffee that you get at pour overs elsewhere. Very cool ambiance, we'll have to come back and get regular coffee and see how it is. Very nice staff. Oh and the siphon took like 15 minutes, way way too long for your first cup of the day. And the seating was pretty full, but while lurking during our long wait for our coffee we did snag seats. We'll have to try this place one more time to see if maybe it gets bumped up a star if their premade drip coffee is good and there's seating. The ambiance and service are really good. read more

First visit to Siphon. I had a latte with one pump of their homemade chocolate syrup which was very good. Decided to try the bacon quiche which was OK could have used more bacon. Ha ha we know there's no such thing as too much bacon. I shared a sofa with another fellow and discovered that we attended the same university about 6 years apart. This cafe is very busy and must have good WiFi Because at least half of the patrons were working on their laptops. I am looking forward to trying other coffee concoctions and food items on my next visit. read more

I almost hate to only give 3 stars, but I feel it's appropriate. The coffee was great, but more expensive than any other coffee shop I've been to. I also loved the atmosphere, even if there was a "Sheeeeeeeesh!" every 5 minutes. Great indoor and outdoor setup with plenty of tables However, my biggest complaint is the inability to get any cell service in there and thé WiFi not working or having a strong enough connection to work on my computer. So if you plan to come here to work, you might not be able to get internet to do so even if you have a hotspot because the cell service is too weak indoors. That's why I had to leave (cuz sitting outside for the cell service on my hotspot became too much when it got closer to noon in Summertime), and unfortunately I won't be able to return for that same reason. read more

Wanted a little caffeine kick after a walk in the park on a Sunday morning, and Siphon absolutely had what I needed. I was surprised to see how many breakfast options they had although I didn't try any. But the 50% off pastries after 5 PM will definitely be a reason for me to come back! The place was pretty crowded but the ambiance was definitely accommodating of all. There were lots of people studying and reading but also a lot that were just chatting away. Nothing was disruptive, and everyone was respectful of the space. There were also cozy outdoor seatings--dog friendly--that I would have loved to try if the weather wasn't too hot. I could have used more vibrant energy from the staff, but no one was rude or neglecting. The cappuccino was PERFECT. The cereal milk latte, on the other hand, could have used a bit more of sweetness. I was expecting a lot sweeter and more cinnamon-y taste but it was almost bland. Overall, it was a satisfying experience, and I would return to try other items on the menu! read more

TL;DR Xenophobic and/or anti-masker staff, also inefficient and rude. My wife and I ordered a latte and an empanada. We were wearing masks as we always do at indoor crowded places. We showed a coupon of $5 which the staff said would be taken care of after we swipe. Red flag 1: We were not offered a receipt. Red flag 2: When getting the coffee, I noticed that I was the only person served warm coffee in a paper cup for a dine-in order - everyone else was served in porcelain cups. Lots of porcelain cups lying idle on top of their coffee machine. Red flag 3: On asking for a porcelain cup, I was brusquely and unceremoniously handed a porcelain cup. Was I supposed to pour my latte from the paper cup into the porcelain cup and ruin the froth? Red flag 4: They actually did not honor or apply the coupon as I found out later from my credit card charge. Edit: The manager did reach out and apologize. I've still been comIng here for years now and it hasn't let me down. Solid breakfast menu that they serve all day. My favorites are the quiches and breakfast taco. All of the baristas are nice and aren't pretentious. Coffee is always reliable and good. Maybe not the best in the world but it does it's job. The only downsides are the parking and seating especially on the weekends. Be prepared to park in the neighborhood and streets nearby. It can be crowded inside so seating can be limited inside. It's a shopping center with shared parking and most times you are lucky if you get a spot. I went on a Saturday and thought it was a fun place to get brunch- if you could find a spot. It was definitely bustling, with many students there studying. I got the cereal milk latte with oatmilk, which was alright. The milk was applejacks Infused with the option of whole milk or oatmilk. Possibly another nondairy milk would have been a better option flavor profile wise, since the oatmilk dominated a lot of the apple Jack's flavor. I originally wanted the spicy maple latte, but they were sold out of it by 11 am on a Saturday, which felt unusual to me. Moving on to food- I got the huevos rancheros, which were alright. The beans needed more salt/flavor and my food came out cool, rather than hot. Overall, I'd come back if I wanted to relax and sip some coffee, but I probably wouldn't come back for brunch. read more

I've always liked Siphon a lot - the parking is decent by Montrose standards, the space is cozy and relaxing, and the cold brew is light and mellow. The namesake "siphon" coffee now costs $9, which is pretty steep (get it? cause it's like tea but made with coffee?) - I'd advise you try it with a friend to see if you like it first. Outlets are abundant, but space is at a premium, especially on the weekends. It's quite hard to fit more than 1-2 people together unless you're lucky enough for a table to open up. Pretty solid coffeeshop. I've been here twice now, once to chill in the evening and once to do some work. Got the cold brew the first time and a chai latte the second time. Both of which were not too bad. Chai latte had a good amount of spice to it too. I parked in the lot both times I've been here too, so I thus never had trouble with parking. The interior is pretty clean and somewhat chique? I call it that b/c I'm used to the grungy laidback coffee shops that resemble people's living rooms moreso than a place you'd have to leave the house to go to. In terms of the wifi, we had trouble connecting to it because you have to connect to SiphonGuest, which you can use the password at the cashier to get into...but only if the browser pops up. I had to do some work on my Mac to get it to force open the browser for me to log in, and my friend who had a Windows OS needed quite a bit of help to get his browser to pop up. Here's a trick though, if you or a friend with you had a Mac, head to System Preferences to Network to Advanced to DNS, then type one of the DNS lines into a browser on the Windows computer. Doing so should pop up the browser to log in to the wifi, good luck :) Anyways, aside from having to spend about half an hour figuring that out, this place is gonna be one of my group's go-tos. Perhaps next time I'll try a pastry here. 8/10, would come again and recommend to a friend. read more

The wooden seating area out back has pecan trees hovering over you keeping it shaded and cool when it's sunny. Or providing a getaway from the city but still has closeness to the downtown hustle and bustle. The fence out back makes you feel like you're in someone's back yard talkin/sharing with friends over a good cuppa. Now to the coffee. Some places they attract you with the sweetness. Some with the heavy/mild roast, etc. I'm still trying to figure out the coffee without asking or looking. I like them bc they are not so sweet. I'm new to coffee. Came on the recommendation of a good friend that this was the best coffee in town. Truly was not disappointed by the brew! Really delicious cappuccino with gorgeous foam art. Super clean, spaced out interior and a chill secluded courtyard that has plenty of seating and shade. Only detraction was the chocolate chip cookie (which honestly is more of a barometer for the likelihood of my return to a coffee shop than the actual coffee, I'm weird, I know)! I have been twice now and the first time just got two cold brews that were okay, not super memorable but did their job. Went back a second time with a friend from out of town and we got 3 drinks, one person got whole milk and two people needed non-dairy oat milk for allergy purposes. The drinks came out not labelled as to what the drinks even were so we had no idea who's was who's. We stood there for a bit until we finally caught the attention of a barista to clarify. She was fairly short with us and quickly identified them. We tried the drinks and think that ultimately all of them were made with oat milk. Before we even get to the coffee I have several atmospheric and procedural complaints. There are no parking spots in the tiny lot shared with other strip mall bizzes (and idjits parking there for grindr-date handies which add that nascent flavour to hastily arranged Montrose-area "coffee dates.") And with all the Neartown construction street parking has been nonexistent for years in the HSPVA zone between W. Alabama and Richmond. So over the course of years I attempted to go here numerous times as a twice-daily midpoint between downtown and Greenway only to find no parking. I suppose it was always an option to "ghost ride the whip" down Greeley with E-40 booming while I went in for muh coffee but that was likely not my best option in lieu of a place to safely stow The Dragon for 15 minutes. So far, the one time I have found a parking spot was minutes after they opened in the early morning and it was the last parking spot in their tiny lot, shared with several other businesses, on a major thoroughfare of the city. Related to that complaint is that this joint does not have a drive thru like one of the many sensible Starbuckses within a mere Uncle Rico's football toss in any given direction of here. This joint, sans drive thru, requires you to remove yourself from your air conditioned motorcar in peak summer to walk in, take care of bidness, and exeunt to a hot car since the parking lot is uncovered. If you got one of the iced drinks the heat of your summer baked car from an uncovered lot will claim the souls of all the ice before you are two blocks away. There is nothing sensible about this experience at all in a Houston summer lasting ten months of the year. This is a tiny cramped location mobbed up by hipsters with their facial piercings and other unsettling hipster aesthetics flying every which way in the summer breeze and through the maelstrom of funyun breath blowing hard across the hipster dotted landscape even at the forbidden hour of 8am where nothing nice happens besides your hangover being extra bitchy about what time of the day it is now that the sun is finally out of her closet, because all of the good men are either taken (and looking for a lil something-something on the side to feel alive according to April Rhodes) or giant balls of nuclear fusion in your sky hole. Ordering and paying is the least-extra part. Picking up the order is the nadir. In the ~ten minutes I was waiting no other orders were called out for pick up. So after ten minutes I thought it was just me. The person calling out the order was ready mumbled something and looked right at me, the only gentlesir standing there at the pick up line. It didn't sound like my name but I had been waiting a long time already. Turns out it was not my order after telling her, the person who I ordered from ten minutes ago, what my order was. I felt like I stood out more as a beautiful snowflake among the others. More waiting. Then my order was "ready" and the person remembered this was my order so she just let me know rather than doing a mumbling which was drowned out by the loudness of the filled store, with a line nearly out the door already. Because I can count [shows you my hands like a six month old] to this many, I told her the order was wrong and got out the gentlesir's receipt to show the number she thought was ready was actually less than the number I had paid for. To her credit she did not argue with me (or like Pizaro's on West Grey maintain in a yelp message that I can't read English, when I have screenshots of their webpage as #receipts of their offer they refused to honour) and she went back into the prep area to fix things right there without fuss. They have been open long enough (Billy K.'s review was from 2014 so they have been open even longer than I thought) I am not sure how charitable to be about them still working out their soft opening trouble spots. But not getting the right amount of things you ordered is a bit elementary. I don't like giving brownie points for not arguing with me; but I also don't want to argue about stupid things. But best put your location on if you think Return was a better film than Empire because holy war and the most holiest smiting is coming. The cold brew iced coffee was suitable and standard but not worth writing home about - I would not blink twice if this came from a Starbucks. To make a point about how the iced coffee was that Futurama-neutral (if I don't make it tell my wife I said hello) my favourite part of the experience was the fun new straw - paper straw! It is one of those environmentally friendly things. No more plastic, in the straw at least. A nice green touch to round out the experience. This joint is an alternative to Starbucks if that kind of thing gets your motor runnin' hot enough to overlook the other things. Your mileage may vary. But, if I had Martha J.'s recent experience with the kitten I would have given additional stars for the Charlie Kelly/Caturday motif. read more

I don't know if there is a non-busy hour for this place! I've been here in the early morning (8am) and in the afternoon/evening (4:30pm), and it's always busy! It's a good sign that a coffee shop has survived in Houston in Montrose where there is competition. The busyness may appear overwhelming, but in the morning it is ephemeral. By the time I parked my car, got my things, and made it to the door, I saw about 5 people leave the place with to-go orders. When I made it insider, I was only 3rd in line! Their service is fast and on point. I ordered my almond milk latte, found a place to sit, began to set up my laptop, and before i knew it, my name was called (my latte was ready)! For a busy place, the service is impeccable. Their coffee is tasty too! It doesn't taste burnt or look gross. Since I'm lactose intolerant, I tend to order soy or almond milk in my coffee. At other cafes, my latte with either of these milks appears as if the two liquids have separated and created a funky solution that I'm supposed to drink. I am more than pleased that my latte today looks and tastes just scrumptious. The additional treat is 90s music on their radio/pandora/whatever they're using. Currently, I'm enjoying "Escapade" by Janet Jackson. Thank you, Siphon. I hope to return since this is a nice, low key place with lots of patronage but plenty of seats to do work or just disconnect from the world. read more

Great coffee shop addition to the Montrose area! Its eponymous offering is the vacuum brewed black coffee - as other reviews have mentioned, if it's your first time seeing it, the process is mesmerizing and does look like something out of a chemistry lab haha. It's a bit pricey in the $6-7 range and I'm not sure it's worth the cost. However, their espresso based drinks are very reasonably priced and I have always been satisfied. My flat white has been fairly consistent regardless of the barista working that day. The shop is spacious, with a plenty of seating on couches, tables, and also on benches along the window. Of note is that they recently removed the plug sockets lining the tables because they were having issues with people camping out there (for those who camp out at coffee shops, please support your business by buying more drinks!). Service is friendly, and the place is generally quiet. They have some delicious looking pastries and baked goods behind the glass, but I've never ordered any as I'm trying to adhere to my low-carb diet :) Probably one of the nicest things about this place is the huge parking lot. I would say 75% of the time I find parking there, and the other times, street parking is very close by. Anyhow, definitely becoming one of my preferred coffee shops in the area. read more

I had high hopes for this place. A lot of my favorite yelpers have been checking in and the first free Sunday morning I had available I wanted to swing on by. I was in line about to order when I ran into a familiar face! At this point I was like this place has to be great! Their menu for food is small and their drink menu is pretty simple too. We had one of the beef empanada and the breakfast panini with bacon. To drink we had the siphon for two. As far as the food went the empanada was good, just small for the price, the sandwich was very meh, the bread wasn't what I expected when I read panini, was expected it to be pressed more. Overall, the sandwich was just very simple. For the price just not worth it. Finally, the coffee. This was the whole reason I came to this place. They have a very unique process for brewing the coffee. It looks like something out of chemistry class! But that's where the awesomeness ends. The coffee itself is very blah. And the price for the two provides about 2 small cups of coffee for over $12 bucks. This place is very trendy, but not high value. They do have outlets and wifi so you can come here to study. This place gives off a great homey feel. It's a really great study spot with couches, and outdoor bench seating. Not gonna lie though, it definitely reminds me of a hipster place. The moment my friend and I walked in, it felt like everyone in the coffee shop stopped what they were doing and all stared at us in a weird way. Kinda felt like we were at the wrong place or something because the looks on peoples faces gave off a...."omg, muggles are here". It's hard to explain but that was the best explanation I could give. But anyways, getting past that part, I really love the fact that they offer both local and craft beer along with their coffee. My favorite things about any coffee shop is that if they offer both beer and coffee, then this is the place to be. Well, in my opinion it is. I've always drive down West Alabama street for a long time and had always seen Siphon, but never knew what it was.
