Fun pop up experience in the midway. The chicken was great. The spot is a little hard to find.

This restaurant serves Asian fusion dishes and it is not that large and bright. The concept kind of like fast food style where you order and pay first. It was full when we arrived and we had to wait. You cannot get the table until you ordered. You order at cashier and they will get you a table after you paid. We ordered bulgogi burrito, bsnh mi, curry udon with fried chicken , and ginger chicken jook. Our order was ready pretty quickly. I love the jook. It is korean style chicken porridge. Combine it with chine donut is great. Curry udon is yummy. It like malaysia laksa or thai red curry meet japanese udon. The soup is not yoo heavy and the fried chicken was yummy. Banh mi is kind of same as what you get from vietnamese banh mi shop. Burrito is ok but not special except this one come with bulgogi as the protein. Thus on is Mexican food meet Korean. Overall it was a nice lunch with my family. Will visit again when I am at neighborhood to try other dishes.

By the time I got home, I realized they gave me the wrong sandwich. Ordered the Asian Cuban, but was given the wooly pig instead. Side salad was good, the dressing was tasty and the salad was fresh. Despite not being what I wanted, the sandwich was good. Pulled pork had an excellent flavor and was tender and juicy. There was pieces of pork belly in the sandwich which kinda messed with it since they were a bit dry and tough. The bun was a standout, very soft and buttery. Basically melted in your mouth. Overall: 4.0/5

Recently, I've been a regular in the area for the WNBA Golden State Valkyries games. After an okay experience inside the arena during Warriors season, we were disappointed to learn a few weeks later that the menu pivoted and we did not enjoy it. I suggested trying here and the line was relatively short with only four people ahead of us for the line to the order stations. There are two iPad screens and a gentleman on the counter would occasionally accept order from the waiting customers in line. We used the right iPad and ordered a burrito to share. After placing our order and my friend paying for it, we walked towards the left wall (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=0fy2Fh-Q2N9LVyvUK5PAUw) and saw two water stations under the Thrive City mural. We waited along the wall as the expediting station was just before the wall. There are cups provided at the water station so my friend and I each got a cup and I grabbed some napkins. After about 8 minutes, our order was called and my friend claimed it. We walked back to the outside dining area as all seats and tables inside were occupied. A kind gentleman at a 4-seat table kindly allowed us to share the table with him. Not wanting to eat too much before the game, we shared the California Sisig burrito, pork, requesting on our order that it be cut in half; our burrito was comprised of pork, French fries, shredded cheese, sour cream, guacamole, and pico de gallo. Here is a photo of my half (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=8-67jjaNjmA_nRVaWdrySw). I requested a complimentary tomatillo salsa (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=1gtm20H4kvvYMB_pEFNVOg) on the side which I poured onto my burrito intermittently as I ate. I enjoyed that it was tasty yet not messy or wet. That is one of my peeves, when burritos leave my hands dripping from the sauces from the burrito. My friend enjoyed hers and we agreed that we would dine here again. We arrived relatively early (5:30 pm for a 7 pm game) yet the restaurant was full. As we left a little before 6 pm, the line spanned to about 15-18 people. Since we used the iPad station, there was no interaction with staff other than picking up the burrito. I mentioned to one the expediters that one of the water station was running low. A few minutes later, he refilled it fully. This is a good option if you're craving Mexican items with a Filipino spin but I recommend coming early if you don't want to wait too long.

It came with a jalapeño sauce that had just the right kick. The gumbo was tasty, although I would've served it with a bit more rice. But the gumbo and fried chicken hit it out of the park! Both were just so tasty and seasoned just right. They gave us a habanero based hot sauce to go with the chicken, but the chicken was so juicy and crispy on the outside and just so flavorful that it didn't need anything extra to make it better. We devoured every single one of our dish. We loved it so much, we're already thinking of making a special trip to Portrero Hill just to eat another meal here.

You know damn well, these basement arm chair warriors would be hiding in the corner during a staff meeting, praying not to be called on by their manager.   One of the topics of debate I often see is what's considered a "beloved" restaurant. While only open for 3 years, āina was one of those "beloved" restaurants in IMO. It was a SF hotspot drawing crowds of people on the weekends for their elevated Hawaiian cuisine and ohana service.   I was so sad that the owners had to abruptly close due to a family emergency.   But, there's some good news.   The former Chef de Cuisine of āina has been running a pop-up called Hén-zhì serving Asian street food inspired by Taiwan and Hawaiian night markets with ingredients sourced from a local farms. Usually, they host tasting menu pop-up dinners but with COVID-19, they've pivoted to lunch boxes and meal kits.   I found Hén-zhì through the FB group page: "Bay Area Restaurants Open for Pick-up" and was drooling over the picture of their Hawaiian Lunch Plate. I haven't had an elevated Hawaiian meal since āina closed so I had to give them a try.   On the menu are "Made to Order" Lunch Box items: Jian Bing (Taiwanese crepe), Spam Curry Lunch Box, and Strawberries 'n Cream [tapioca] dessert.   For couples and families, there's Meal Kits to reheat at home: Bone-in Shortrib, Chashao Pork Belly & Ssam Kit (lettuce wraps), and Coconut Tapioca.   Place an order on Hén-zhì's website and note a pickup time in the notes section (between 3-5 pm). Once your order is confirmed, pay via Venmo. All items must be pre-ordered and paid before pickup/delivery.   Contactless pickup is at Harmonic Brewing at the loading dock. While you're there, you can also purchase beer from Harmonic (pre-order directly from Harmonic).   It's located in an industrial area of Dogpatch so there's easy street parking.   Contactless delivery available on some days, East Bay only.   Menu and pickup/delivery schedule changes so check their website and social media pasges for the latest info.   I ordered the following for pickup: * Jian Bing: Scallion pancake w/ egg scramble, pork floss, and brokaw ranch avocado ($12) Loved this elevated take on a Taiwanese breakfast classic - the scallion pancake was warm and crisp, a perfect contrast to the soft egg, umami-rich pork floss (like shredded beef jerky), and buttery avocado. There also shredded napa cabbage for freshness, mala crispies for a hint of warming spice, and umami aioli for a creamy finish. * SPAM Curry Lunch Box w/ Japanese coconut curry, market pickles, soft egg, and koda farms rice ($16) A Hawaiian-Japanese mashup, the lunch box was deliciously comforting with the thick slices of salty spam, soft rice, and savory sweet curry sauce. And, of course, the soft egg with liquid gold added that extra layer of richness. Also, included were an array of pickled veggies: pickled radish, gai lan (Chinese broccoli), and sesame cucumber. * Strawberries 'n Cream w/ tomatero farms strawberries, jasmine tea, coconut tapioca, whipped black sesame ($8) A great ending to my meal was this dessert, it had just the right balance of sweet tartness and plenty of ripen strawberries. If you like sago-like desserts, get this! I appreciate the care put into the packaging. The items were in compostable boxes sealed with specially made sleeves/labels with the menu item name and ingredients. Chopsticks and thick napkins were provided. I found a clean picnic area across from Mission Rock to enjoy my meal (~1 mile away). Even though it was takeout, service was humble and gracious. My order was ready before my pickup time. Staff wore masks. I recognized one of the pop-up owners from Dumpling Time who's always provided great service on my visits there.   If you're looking for delicious elevated Asian street food and to support local chefs and farms in the process, give Hén-zhì a try!

Because it was a delivery, I was happy about not having to adhere to a particular schedule and get in my car and drive to a destination. Well, when the Chinese New Year menu was announced, I was drawn by the menu but unfortunately it would be in the latter format with a Sunday pickup. In checking their website, they also offered a pop-up stand named El Chino Grande with hot food offerings and beverages. Being as my main mission was the pick up, I was not prepared to dine here though they have ample outdoor tables under a tent. In speaking with Yvette and seeing the partial menu, I ordered a few items in duplicate to eat later as well as share with friends. When I got home, I decided to have one item fresh from my car, the Da b-fast burger (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=Yq_JpPpMYdyvXMfCDH__2g&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q); talk about fully loaded - my burger was topped with a fried egg, brown sugar bacon, a hash brown, pickles, and cabbage slaw; this came with a bag of S&P potato chips. What a breakfast as it seemed to grow as I ate for breakfast. A few days later, I tried the Taiwanese taco (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=boJItZ-mFJvFZIj80wkgUw&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q) (not sure whether this is the same as their website scallion pancake hand roll); this was more like a large soft taco with the outer casing being a green onion/scallion pancake garnished with pickled radishes, pork floss, nori, shredded cabbage and carrots, and egg. Wow... trust me in saying, MUST GET THIS. I reheated it at low heat in my toaster oven and this was ridiculous flavor wise as all of the ingredients just work. Finally, I reheated the Taiwanese porridge (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=dVNeBmrbYIlvoRWjKxVySA&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q) on a pot at medium low heat on our stove. I recommend eating this right away as the presentation suffers when reheated. Again, like the burrito, the flavors all work and the bonus was finding an egg in the center of the cup. I do recommend eating it right away or at least that day if you want to enjoy to liquid gold from the yolk. Shortly after I pulled out of the parking lot, Ivette called and asked me to return to 'get a few things'. It turned out, likely due to my purchase amount, they gifted me a Lilikoi Black tea (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=bsqDmLWkxVXI8RK1riL1AA&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q) (passion fruit), some homemade cookies (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=_5jxrwBRZgPI_Mkb3Y8wwg&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q), and a dessert! Without even leaving my car, a gentleman handed me all of these goodies as I pulled up the driveway. Incredibly nice and generous. Take a bow El Chino Grande, for literally knocking the socks off of me! Guess where I'm going this coming Sunday... PS Check out the CNY meal photos... enough said.
