I thought "maybe they just had a bad day" so a bit over a month I tried again due to the distance it is to drive to a place that has shrimp. I live about 12 min from SS and I never even thought about stopping there but when I left Gold's to make a Home Depot run I decided to give them a try. Both Troy and LaShawn were very nice and professional which is a big deal to me in addition to the quality/taste of the food and the dining area which was immaculate and well laid out. I decided to get "The Big Cat" which is their catfish sandwich (you can also get a platter I think) and it was the BEST store brought prepared catfish I've ever had. I had about three fillets on it IIRC and the bread was a soft large bun but it wasn't too thick and bready. Two ppl could share this MASSIVE catfish sandwich and the seasoning was on the money. The only thing I did was splashed some Texas Pete hot-sauce on it and I was good to go. I ordered a side of the collard greens which I'm just now tasting and they are also delicious but I'm not use to eating sweetened vegetables but it was perfect in a way. I'm a great home chef and I know good food when I eat it and this place serves up some good catfish and greens. I can't speak to the others because I haven't tried them yet but I will stop back in few weeks and maybe try one of the Po Boy sandwiches but only ppl from 'Nor-leans' can make that Cajun/creole food but I'll check it out nonetheless. If you are in the area, stop over there and grab The Big Cat and some greens which I'm sure you will enjoy them both. I do not recommend this place based on the inconsistency of food and service. The food is prepared well 1/2 the time when they are not busy. The rest of the times it's burnt with no care on good handling. The crabmeat cup shown on the website is not you'll get. It's actually served in a super tiny one once dipping sauce cup. The crab "cup" soup is not a cup but rather about a 3oz cups Staff gets defensive when you mention food is not prepared well and items not as depicted on web site. The cleanliness is questionable based on the staff persona, hands, and no glove use. Try at your own risk. read more

Spot isn't bad, service could use some help. Got there no one was there; told the lady I ordered online. She said ok and that I had to wait. I stood to the side. Few other patrons came in and were served. Waited about 10 minutes and then saw some bags come to the rack. The cashier looked at the bags and didn't say anything to me. Assumed it wasn't mine. Few other people came in and ordered. The first patrons ( that came right after me) got their food and left). This was now another 15 mins. Saw the same bag sitting at the rack. Asked if mine was ready yet; she looked at the same bag she looked at in the beginning and gave it to me; didn't saw a word and walked away. Almost 30 minutes waiting in store; and I pre ordered 20 minutes before I got there. Come on...wasted my time. Food was ok; kind of cold by the time I got it home. We were super excited when this skrimp shack showed up close to our house! We checked it out a few days after it opened! It is so good and they do such a great job on their seafood and sauces, but I only gave it four stars because it's not as good as the Skrimp shack locations in Newport News. I'm not sure why, but it doesn't have the same flavor as Newport News, maybe because the Newport News location is older and has more grime and crusted on flavors... I know that sounds gross but that's the only thing I can think of. It didn't feel as greasy and sinful as the Newport News shrimp tacos... These felt a little more clean and healthy but for the same calorie count! All this to say, still delicious and we will 100% be back soon! Yummm read more

Wow! That fried shrimp is tasty and not over cooked like some other places. Just right. The coating is not heavy but just right. I got an order of fried okra, again not over cooked. Tasted great and a banana pudding to wrap it up. This was my first experience eating here. It's in the back of the shopping center and it was busy with takeout. I use to make the drive from my house in Woodlawn to the one in Dumfries. Now I don't have to do that because they put one in Hybla Valley. FYI they cook everything to order so don't expect to be in and out. I get the haddock dinner and add shrimp. Its always nicely cooked and crispy but not greasy. Its a lot of food so be hungry. This was our first visit to Skrimp Shack. We were welcomed by a very nice man (who I think may be the manager). He spoke to us about the menu and what we could expect from each meal. The fried fish and shrimp po boy were delicious. We were not crazy about the Mac, but loved the potato salad. I can't wait to try the fried scallops! Skrimp Shack was at the VA Wine Festival this weekend with their food truck and we ordered fried shrimp and Mac and cheese platter. We waited 25 min to order and then 25 min for our food. They won't cook food in big batches (only to order) even at a large festival so when 25 people are in line they haven't figured out a better way to expedite orders. They served us like 6 lukewarm shrimp that were not crispy but had mediocre seasoning and a tiny side of the worst boxed-tasting liquid Mac and cheese I've ever had. It was unseasoned and tasted like it was made with milk and a little cheese. I haven't been to their brick and mortar stores but steer clear of their food truck. Not the nice simple Rolls hard on the outside and soft in the middle . Sauces were to sweet. They smothered the baby blackened shrimp and crab with it. The bun was soaked through. As for the sauces.We ordered half hot and half mild. The sauces it's self was not too bad tasting . However , I wanted to try something different with the sauce. Having grown up on the coast of South Georgia, I consider myself a fried shrimp aficionado. I can say hands down these were the best fried shrimp I have had since moving to the DMV. They were a nice size and not too heavily breaded so that you can actually taste the shrimp. The collard greens and hush puppies were excellent as well. I did an online order to pick up yesterday (10/22/2020). I ordered the fried catfish basket with okra and 4 fried shrimp added. I was scheduled to pick up my order in 20 minutes, however, when I arrived 30 mins later, the restaurant was full of waiting angry customers. The cashier told me they were short on staff and that I would have to wait an additional 15 minutes for my food. That 15 additional minutes turned into 30 minutes and was about to ask for a refund until the owner came out with my food and he was very polite and apologized. This experience was definitely a bad impression especially bc this was my first time coming here. However I still give the restaurant 3 stars bc the food was really good. Pretty decent fried whiting. Not as good as Horace & Dickies, or the church fish truck down Route 1, but it's about as good as you're going to get this side of the river. Collards greens have bacon in them, so they're pretty porky. Could use a little pepper vinegar to cut the grease. Will give their catfish a try. They cook everything to order, and check your order when they hand it to you so you get what you order, so it'll take a while to get your food. Best bet is to pre-order via Doordash or have it delivered. read more
