Which is really anti climatic because there is absolutely no fear when ordering your catch of the day at Slap Fish. I could have made a meal out of my Lobster Taquitos alone but I had to over do it and order the Ultimate Fish taco too. You can tell that everything from the sauces to the pickles are made in house, not to mention their variety of non-gmo sodas ( my favorite was the cucumber). Very rude owner! We had ordered and asked if the table could be cleaned of others dirty dishes. He said go to another table and he'd get to it in 10-15 minutes. My husband came with our drinks and he mouthed off to him as well as two older ladies next to us. He cleaned the table with the attitude of a child then pretty much threw our number at us. Service was amazing (note it was not crowded at all). We had the grilled shrimp roll with fríes (awesome sauce), the grilled street taco, and the poke bowl. All were really great, but we immediately knew (before we ordered the street taco) that our 2 entrees were not gonna be enough! tl;dr - save your money and go elsewhere. we've been going to slapfish since they opened the Holly location in 2017 and then almost exclusively at the Winrock location when that opened. We've probably had over 30 meals there, and have seen their menu evolve. We've always loved it for the California seafood vibe that we missed living in NM, and thought they held the top spot in Albuquerque for fresh coastal low-key seafood. our recent experiences here have steadily declined in the last 9 months but we suspended judgement knowing some places were really struggling after the pandemic and inflation, however our meal last night was the final straw. general complaints: 1. they started using the Level Up app for loyalty and have a placard at the order counter encouraging its use. From the first day it was installed the staff really didn't know how to use it, and the scanner at the first POS station hasn't worked. But the first POS station is where they always take your order unless it's busy and they're staffing both stations. We finally wised up and tell them we have the app so the cashier can log out of the first POS station and move to the second station with the functioning scanner. Seriously- they haven't fixed this in a year??? 2. many track light fixtures aren't working and they replaced some light fixture lamps with a cool color temp, so the space feels cold. really bad vibe for a seafood place. 3. no more sliced lemon by the water. 4. tiny plastic cups for water. the meal: we ordered a double fish and chips and a grilled fish salad to dine in, we sat down at a table. 1. the meal arrived in a large brown bag. we told them it was for here, not to go. they took it back and we heard discussion for a couple minutes behind the counter. after a couple minutes the server comes back with our food in the to go containers and sets it on the table. ugh ok. 2. we ordered the salad with grilled hoki but the kitchen substituted cod because they were out. the server told us the cashier was supposed to tell customers. i guess they couldn't be bothered to slap a temporary "out of hoki" sign on the menu? 3. the salad was undressed and had A LOT of spinach and a tiny cup of dressing- i guess we're supposed to dress and mix the salad at the table in a paper to go container with our plastic fork? 4. the fish and chips...sigh. the fish was extremely greasy, as in a puddle of grease in the to go container. gross. the fish was tough and the texture was as if it was refrozen. gross. the french fries were underwhelming and missing the old bay seasoning that they've always generously sprinkled on. 5. at the time of our order, ours was the only order in the restaurant. there was one other couple in the restaurant already eating when we sat down. zero excuse for not fixing the to go/dine in screwup properly and for rushing out the fish and chips and not letting it drain. i was curious and looked into it - turns out slapfish ownership changed in July 2022, the original chef/owner sold his portion to an investment group. as far as i can tell, most of the formerly franchised locations are now owned by that investment group, including both in New Mexico. i feel like this explains it all - totally absent management who don't really care. the place feels like they're squeezing pennies and not taking care of the fundamentals now. read more

I ordered the lobster roll and clam chowder. I paid $35 dollars for a roll that was subpar. There wasn't much flavor to the lobster. Had a fishy taste to it which was unappealing. The clam chowder was extremely thick and had bits of grit in it. I was not happy with this meal. I didn't complain to the restaurant because I was so hungry I ate it all. I asked other people about this restaurant and they thought it tasted bad because it was cold (they ordered it through (Doordash). Very disappointed :(. I rarely do restaurant reviews, as a worker in the industry myself, I feel sometimes that people can be unfair/biased. I had really high hopes for this place, it's not often you find somewhere in Albuquerque that can make seafood in a fast takeout style way. I ordered the Lobster roll, which costs a cool $25, I was expecting a huge roll packed with lobster, however I received very little on a roll that was about 4x2 inches. The lobster was delicious, but for $25 you would expect more. My brother had the fish and chips, the fish was kind stringy unfortunately. Lastly the chowder fries, they had no flavor, not even really that rich flavor you expect from chowder. I will say however, that the Fish Taco was excellent. but 4 items for $53 just didn't live up to my expectations. The two things you don't screw with is BBQ sauce and Tarter Sauce. They have the hands fown WORST Tarter Sauce ever EVER. I dined at this Uptown location shortly after it first opened and was so very pleased with the quality, service, and taste. I've since been 3 more times and it has sadly deteriorated. On all 3 occasions we have had an issue - the cashier was unfriendly, every table was dIrty and there was nowhere to sit, the octopus "special" was way overcooked, our fries were burnt. After speaking to the manager/owner, I was told he'd "get me next time." I'm pretty bummed about the decline, so I will no longer bring friends and family that visit from out of town. read more

Tried this place for the first time. The fish was pretty good but also pretty greasy. I used paper towels to soak some of it up. Tasted great though. The fries were cold and soggy and about half of them were overcooked. I bought the bigger size of the fish and chips and got it to go. The packaging to go was about the dumbest thing I've ever seen. The fries were on a tray with the fish laying on top of them and the tray was just sitting in the bag with no cover or anything on it. So the grease from the fish ruined the fries. Tarter sauce? It came with one tiny little cup of it. I needed at least 4 of those. How are you going to serve someone fish portions that big (which was nice) and give next to no tarter sauce?! Best fish tacos for a chain restaurant ever. The best deal is definitely the ultt fish taco with tilapia, but I love the barramundi when they have it for the upcharge, and street tacos on Tuesday when it's bogo free is the bomb. They have better oysters and fresher than most seafood joints I go to. And the Louisiana Cajun Chef hot sauce is my favorite. It's better than Slapfish's own hot sauces. read more

We were very excited to have a closer Slapfish location that is closer to home. We visited on day 3 of being open, before grand opening so it was fairly empty at 2 in the afternoon. Overall the food was as expected. I gave four instead of five stars for two reasons. First, the time between ordering receiving the food was long. Secondly, we ordered a bowl with "only rice and talapia" and it was served with a green sauce on it so it had to be remade. The second order of white rice came back undercooked and hard. Aside from that, this will probably be great as soon as all the opening kinks get worked out. In regards to price, it was $80 for four meals and two beers, no other drinks. My daughter did order the lobster grilled cheese which she thought was worth every bit of the $15. My husband and I ordered the ultimate fish tacos and upgraded to beer battered so that added $4.
