I recently spent a little over a week bumming around Kansas City, playing video poker and chowing on a bunch of bbq. My first bbq stop in this trip was Slap's, and it did not disappoint. I liked it so much I ended up going here a second time a few days later. My first visit was on Tuesday 5/30/23 about 1pm. The line was brief (about 5 minutes). I ordered the Burnt Ends combo plate with smoked Turkey, slaw and baked potato casserole. Since Covid has not actually gone away, I chose to eat in their lovely outdoor, 2nd story dining area overlooking the city. Great view! Getting up the stairs with a tray of food and a drink can be a little tricky, but I managed to not spill. No, I waited to do that when I sat down and tried to push the tray on the plastic table cloth (it grabs the tray). Oh well, the lid stayed on the drink, causing little problem. The winner here was the smoked Turkey. It is SO GOOD. Best I have ever had. The burnt ends were very good too, but I still prefer LC's for ends. When I ordered, I overheard the carver telling the customer that they were out of beef ribs for the day. Just fyi, they do sell out of things quickly sometimes. The slaw was good but the potato casserole was outstanding. Overall, a 5* star meal! On my second visit a week later, I got pork ribs and turkey. The ribs were very, very moist and again, the smoked turkey was killer. The sauces at Slap's are tasty, and I preferred the hot one. For sides, they were out of slaw so I went with potato casserole again and cheesy corn, which is pure midwestern comfort food. Love Slap's, and I will be back again someday for sure! read more

I am extremely surprised in the positive reviews of this place. This was the slap in the face in a bad way. Where do I begin? First of, was this meat smoked at all? I get very little notes of smoke and someone was afraid of using salt. The texture was alright. I think it looks juicy but still leaves a bit of chalkiness in the mouth. The worse part is that it is just sweet. There's no depth to the meat. I had some ribs, burnt ends, and some pulled pork. The pulled pork was however good salty and well rounded. The burnt ends were sad and the ribs were super bland. The only thing this place had going for them are the sides. The cheesy corn and the potato casserole were bomb. Great BBQ joint in the heart of KC. The BBQ is tremendous by the waiting line out the door and down the sidewalk. Don't let that deter your choice because it is worth the wait and their process is very efficient, especially if people know what they want when they get up to the counter to order, or you can order online and pick it up to avoid the line. They provide multiple opportunities to view the menu to decide while in line, and instructions of their ordering process, but if you overlook them the staff is very courteous. Oh. My. God. This is the best barbecue I have ever hard. Fall-off-the-bone ribs, great barbecue sauce, creamy mac and cheese, and a solid beer selection. It was pretty busy for a Wednesday evening but for good reason. I highly recommend the rooftop seating. No music, and great views of the city. If I'm ever in Kansas City again, I'll be back. In a rough neighborhood, next to some divey bars, Slaps doesn't look like much. The only fully interior space is where you order your food- the seating is either in the covered porch, or above on the patios on picnic tables. I'm sure they probably put some heaters out in winter, but being exposed to the elements at the end of October was a bit of a trip. The yellow jackets were especially drawn to the syrupy bbq sauce, and harassed everyone around us. No complex flavors here. Every thing was straight up what it was- cheese tasted like cheese, meat tasted like meat. The cole slaw was chopped into tiny pieces and was slightly sweet. Sweet potato fries were really good. The cheesy corn tasted like nacho cheese mixed into canned corn- pretty good but like a heart attack in a styrofoam cup. The sandwiches were super messy as the bread absorbed the liquid from the cheese or the slaw. At $10+ for a sandwich and $4-5 per side, it was a little pricey. The sweet bbq sauce was not tomato based like most sauces, but syrupy- maybe molasses based? Tasted good. Wished there was more bark on the meats, but they were smoked well and tender. My husband and I joked that this was the restaurant you went to after you'd been married for over a decade- not a first date restaurant. Interesting place! Outdoor picnic table style seating or indoors same style seating. It was chilly the afternoon we were there and the heaters work great. It's a nice touch that you can order a beer while you are waiting in line. Hubby went with the ribs and burnt ends plate with the baked potato casserole and baked beans. I always wondered what the love of burnt ends was till I got here. The ones I had previously were chewy or not tender like these were. So good. The cheesy corn was different and not something I would get again but the rest was excellent. The beef sausage stands on its own with no need for sauce or anything. Just not worth the hype. Purposely drove here in my sons recommdation feom Oklahoma to Minnesota. Noticed a lot g line so assumed it was worth the wait. Disappointing to say the least. Buns for sandwiches were low grade, sides were flavorless and had no texture. Mac and cheese was bland and mushy, obviously not made in house. Cor had no flavor. If I could give this place more than 5 stars I would. I swear this was life changing KC BBQ and the cheesy corn? I've had multiple dreams about it since eating it this past Sunday. Leftovers? Incredible. This is the BEST BBQ in KC (and I've tried almost all of it). Even the bread that you get with your meal was delicious. I CANNOT wait to go again soon. The service was so fast and everyone was super friendly. The prices were right on where other places around town are charging but the portions are bigger. Tried this place on a recommendation from a waitress at the Cigar bar from the night before and have to say it was disappointing. The ribs, the best thing here, while good was falling off the bone, I prefer the to have a little pull back to them and more smoke flavor which all the meat lacked. Pulled pork was tender but a little on the dry side. Burnt ends were ok, but lacking flavor (a constant theme). The brisket was the worst of the meats, dry, chewy, sliced too thin! Sides:beans were the best of the bunch, tender, just sweet enough. Mac n cheese was ok, definitely Velveeta based. Potato casserole had a weird taste that I couldn't recognize and too salty. I think Slap's was definitely worth it. Not the most expensive (relative to my experience going to many bbq places in Texas). The line wasn't too long. The service was great, very very nice and speedy as well. We went with 5 people at 5:35pm on a Friday and were easily able to find a seat outside which was covered and warm for it to be 45 degrees outside. Burnt ends - 10/10. Definitely the best of the meats. Actually went back and ordered an extra 1/4 lb because they were just that good. Brisket - 6/10 - didn't have the most flavor and were a little dry, but paired with the pickles and bread plus sweet bbq sauce - was better. Sausage - 8/10 - the sausage with the sweet bbq was really good. not pictured - the jalapeño cheddar sausage was also very good and juicy - with or without sauce. Baked Beans - 8/10 - some of the best seasoned ones i've had. As anyone knows, in the BBQ world, Kansas City is the PO place famous for Burnt Ends. That also makes Kansas City pretty snobby about our brisket. Brisket can also be the most painful thing to do in BBQ. If you don't trim it enough or properly, it could just fall apart on you. Trim it too much and you will end up with chewy shoe leather. A good brisket is a perfect marriage of fat and meat. The fat slowly tenderizing that tough brisket into a succulent melt in your mouth sensation. Now personally, Imlive that fatty brisket that comes from where the flat and the point join on a whole brisket. After that, it is all about the flat, but a lot of joints sacrifice succulence for tenderness. Not the boys at Slaps. I have had their brisket loads of times and every time it is tender and juicy. This is something I find many places struggle with because you have to be perfect on temp and smoking time to get that juicy, tender, succulent flat that isn't tough and underdone or overdone and falling apart. Slap's had never disappointed in the brisket. They are in the top 5 in the nation for brisket in my opinion. There signature sauce is a great mid range sauce. Not over sweet, not to hot, just the right amount of kick with savory and sweet notes that just elevates that brisket. Pair it with their potato casserole, onion rings, and mac and cheese and you have true heaven on a plate Slap's is a must on your KC BBQ tour and destined to be the next KC tradition. read more
