While in Kansas City for business, we heard about this place and so we decided to take an Uber to it. It was well worth the trip. Everything about this place was amazing. The staff was super friendly and helpful and the ribs and sausage were amazing. One of my coworkers was with me and said the burnt ends were some of the best he's ever had. While this place may seem a little bit out-of-the-way from the rest of Kansas City. It is well worth the Dr. or the effort to get there. Do yourself a favor and check it out!
On a roadtrip and was so excited to pass through KC to try the famous BBQ! Obviously, I can't judge a city's food by one establishment, but I was so disappointed. Got a sampler platter w/ cheesy corn and potato casserole and added burnt ends + ribs to go since I'm traveling with my 2 kitties. Everything was just... bland, especially the brisket and burnt ends. Very surprised the bbq place is so popular when the food is just meh. Was also surprised how cheap the online prices were and turns out, the prices aren't updated. The outdoor seating looks nice, and the staff were friendly, but I would not come back.
First time getting BBQ in KCK and historically have only had BBQ in Houston (which may be controversial haha). I found that most of the plate was well cooked but the smoked flavor didn't penetrate as well as I anticipated and relied maybe a bit too much on the sauce to provide the flavor. Recommend getting the Sampler Plate and adding on burnt ends and ribs to try everything - the ribs were well seasoned and the star of the show. The jalapeno cheddar sausage is well worth it and not too spicy at all. The burnt ends didn't feel as close to the title and crispy, but were very juicy and more fatty. The brisket, pulled pork, and turkey were less flavorful than I anticipated and definitely leaned on the sweeter side of BBQ, which may just be the style here. Have yet to try other places, but the staff were incredibly nice and explained things well and the dining area, despite being on the small-medium end has quite high turnover, so you can probably find a seat during less common meal hours - we came around 3pm on a Sunday and was able to find a seat! Local draft beer was ok. Self-service station was well-stocked and dining area is covered on rainy days. Small parking lot available in the back.
Was this worth the two Uber rides from downtown area? No. You can find better quality BBQ in downtown at places like Woolfpack's. Can't believe people would wait in line for this mediocre food. Definitely don't do such foolishness. We tried every meat that was available--they ran out of a few things, so arrive early. By 5pm there's a dinner rush line outside the door. At 4pm, we still were able to place our orders in relative peace and quiet. All the meats were just okay and almost underwhelming. Ribs were dry, brisket was super dry and bland [and old], pulled pork was the most decent type of meat thanks to the sweet juices in which it was served. Old, wilted cole slaw was drowning in over-sugared, old mayo. Pipping hot sweet fries were the best part of the meal, which should not be the case at an old BBQ spot such as this. Indoor and outdoor seating available. Both are uncomfortable during hot weather, as there are no fans/ACs, or awning to protect you from blasting sun or stiffling hot air. Not a comfortable experience on a war day when you're sweating bullets and trying to shield yourself from unforgiving sun.
We were going to another bbq place but it had an hour and a half wait because of the World Cup. This one still had a line but maybe 30 minutes. Well worth the wait, we ordered a little buffet to try everything and was soo good, the pull pork was the best part, easy and quick to order.. you have different areas where you could eat. The only thing I'm going to say that I didn't think was sanitary, was the lady cutting the meat and putting in on the plate, she's wearing gloves and I was watching her grab all the fridge handles and absolutely everything and also grabbing all the meat with those same hands, all the handles had pieces of meat in it and I found it a little disgusting. Please do something about that. Use utensils to grab the meats..
Laid back establishment, food is prepared ahead of time and you get your meat sliced up and your sides done at the counter. You then go take a seat at a set of indoor outdoor patio picnic tables. I got the burnt ends combo which included another smoked meat, and 2 sides. I got the smoked jalapeño and cheddar sausage, cheesy corn and the baked beans. The burnt ends were incredible, seriously no notes. Fatty, smoky and ridiculously tender and delicious. The sausage had some spice and was also nice and cheesy filled, they were also to die for. Then the cheesy corn was like cream of corn but felt like that mixed with Mac and cheese. They were creamy, cheesy and wonderful! Lastly the baked beans were rich, sweet, and had a thick sauce with some pieces of meat thrown in. They were very tasty and a bit overwhelmingly sweet for my palette, but still delicious. I enjoyed my experience here a lot, definitely had my fill as I wasn't able to finish and had to get a to go box to bring the last of it home. Would come back again in a heart beat.
Get in line - you are lucky if the line is on the shorter side, order at the counter, watch the staff cut the meats and assemble your plate, go out to the covered patio, get some BBQ sauce and utensils, grab a seat at one of the communal picnic tables, and enjoy your food. Alternatively, get your food to-go, head over to Strawberry Hill Brewing next door, and pair their beers with your food. I came here for lunch with some friends, and after spending the time in line pondering what to order, I decided to get the burnt end combo with brisket and sides of baked beans and cheesy corn, and three ribs. The meats were amazing. The meat was lean but very tender and not dry at all. The ribs were so good; the dry rub has so much flavor that sauce is not necessary. The BBQ sauces are good. I tried the regular sauce, which is on the sweeter side, and the hot sauce, which is a mild vinegary sauce. The sides were decent. The beans are a little sweet, but the cheesy corn is just right. Slap's might be my new favorite BBQ spot. It is not a fancy restaurant, but it is quality food.
Good solid choice for bbq. Came on a weekday lunch and there was a line but not too bad. Good amount of seating but watch out for the outdoor seating because there's some honey loving bees. Street parking was decently available. The burnt ends were good but the brisket left more to be desired. The brisket was kinda flavorless and felt more like a tritip because it wasn't super tender. I'd definitely prefer Texas style brisket. Sides were good, but not knock your socks off. Overall was still good!
Slaps was the best KC BBQ experience I've had so far. We stopped and scouted the massive menu. We placed our order and I got the last dish of burnt ends for the day. I'm a glad we weren't a minute later! We grabbed a table outside and grabbed some sauces from the dispensers. The ribs were so full of smoky flavor and the meat was falling off the bone. The burnt ends were bites of happiness! I would gladly come back here! Great service, killer bbq!!!

Continues to be my favorite barbecue in the entire city. If you consider sides a critical part of a barbecue joint, this is the winner hands-down. I took out of town visitors to a few others that are famous within the city. This was their favorite. The sandwiches and meat platters were all delicious. Being able to grab a beer while waiting tremendously added to the experience too. The updates they've done to their patio and adding a rooftop space really has made a difference too. I love what they've done with the community here as well. You can grab a coffee after scarfing down barbecue at split log across the street. And I see other businesses are opening up as well. Expect community size picnic tables where you squeeze in together. It makes for a great Kansas City experience. read more

I got a combo with ribs and brisket. It didn't look like that much food but when you start To eat, it's a lot of food. For $20. ($25 after tax and tip) The ribs were great. The brisket was plentiful. Coming back from Colorado we decided to stop In KC for BBQ since they have some of the best BBQ around. I have worked for Sugarfire in the past and have seen quality tremble when franchising, I wanted to find a place that is singular location since typically the food is much higher quality. Had a great conversation with guy serving up and gave me a few burnt ends to try and they were to die for I ordered the meat platter and it was probably enough food to serve 2 people or more. The brisket was very lean and not fatty, pulled pork had great flavor and the jalapeño cheddar sausage was amazing. Turkey was also not dry at all and tasted great with The sweet sauce, absolutely delicious. I loved the outdoor tent that's heated it's a self serve so you don't have to ask anybody for any Togo containers or anything I like how they make it and easier experience read more

Well we were in town this weekend from Dallas and coming off the heels of a not so amazing experience at Q39. As barbecue enthusiasts, I asked a few locals about where we can get some good ole low country no frills barbecue in Kansas City. The line at Joe's was just too long for our available time that day so we went to Slap's and we are so glad we did! This place is way more our speed. A casual walk-up where the guy behind the counter is serving up my meat and sides! No fancy restaurants and wait staff delivering my food table side. Burnt ends? Exactly what I needed wanted and expected! Char and smoke flavored meat nuggets that sent me to another place. The ribs were perfectly cooked. I took a bite into them and not only were they superbly tender but I could see a perfect bite impression in the meat and it didn't fall off the bone which is just a great sign of perfectly cooked ribs. Plus they weren't sauced to death too! Just a great rib! The pulled pork was a sleeper! Perfectly smoked-kissed meat not sopping wet in juices or vinegar sauces. It was totally stand alone and loved every bite. The smoked chicken leg quarter was ok. Tasted like chicken lol. Wasn't dry. If you like chicken you won't be disappointed. As far as the sides go, they could use a lil improvement. Hush puppies were pre-cooked and kinda hard and not really warm. The bacon Mac and cheese had a very loose runny cheese sauce and the bacon was like half cooked. But the potato casserole checked all the boxes of what I needed for the perfect side with my smoked meats. It warm and gooey and cheesy and potato-y. I definitely recommend. When in KC, do yourself a favor and visit Slap's! read more

We were passing through KC and had to get some BBQ. We chose SLAPs because I had seen it on TV. We ordered turkey, ribs, brisket, pulled pork, potato casserole, hush puppies, Cole slaw, cheese curds and Macaroni and cheese. The ribs were sweet and very tender. The turkey was excellent! The brisket was sliced very thin, like lunch meat thin, and it wasn't cooked in a way that renders the fat and makes it soft and luscious. Honestly, the brisket was the low point of the meats. The pulled pork was sauced, tender and sweet. All of the sides, with the exception of the slaw were very good. In my opinion the slaw was too sweet. It was chopped very fine and just not that great. Overall the food was very good. I would like to try some other KC BBQ spots to see how it compares. read more

One word AMAZING! Stopped by when in KC and it was some of the best BBQ I've ever had. When you walk in you order your food and drinks at the counter and they get it ready right away. So once you're up to the counter it is not a lot of waiting for your food. For seating they have an inside are and then an outdoor patio with an upstairs part that's covered. I got the pulled pork plate with potato casserole and cole slaw. The pulled pork was delicious it was a little sweet without any sauce, best I've had without sauce added. The potato casserole was so good you have to try it if you go here. The Cole slaw was good but it was just average. My friends got the ribs plate and the brisket. Both were very good as well! The max cheese was good but again just average. The beans were very good too! I am so happy we decided to come here and if you're in the KC area looking for some good BBQ you have to stop here! read more

We were excited to try this place before the Thursday Night Chiefs Game. Maybe our expectations were too high based upon reviews. The food was good, but not so good that we'd return. My brother and I shared the Sampler Platter w Brisket, Pulled Pork, Jalapeño Sausage & Chicken and we added on Burnt Ends. Sides are Mac n Cheese and Potato Casserole. Definitely good portions, but nothing stood out. Main sauce was way too sweet for both of us and spicy sauce was good, but too runny. read more

BBQ was amazing. It was fresh and delicious. You do not need sauce to make the meat taste good. It is in a league of its own. I liked the sides, especially the sweet potato fries. Cheesy corn and coleslaw were great. Pulled pork was tender and juicy. Burnt ends were great! But the ribs stole the show. No sauce needed, juicy, perfect- lets you know the owners know their way around a smoke pit. Well worth the wait. They're moving as fast as they can, great service and a real old school BBQ ambiance. TL;DR: If you love barbecue and want to try Slap's, I'd say go for it, but I would not recommend this to people trying KC bbq for the first time because Slap's was my first experience and it isn't representative of how amazing KC bbq is, which I only learned after I moved here. For the price and the wait, you can get into pretty much any bbq place in the KC metro, so try somewhere else for your first time (would recommend Q39 first and Joe's second). For this review, I wanted to go back and try Slap's again. I'm told by Slap's fanatics that the biggest struggle with this place is the inconsistency. Some days, it truly does slap. Other days, not so much. Fair enough! I'm game for second chances. To try everything at Slap's, the best deal is to order the Sampler Plate, which includes turkey, pulled pork, sausage, brisket, bread, pickles, and two large sides, and get it with the with added burnt ends and three ribs. That comes out to about $31 with enough food to fill 2-3 people (picture attached). You can add a quarter chicken to the meal (as I did) to make for a well-rounded protein platter. You can see in the picture that there's no char on the ribs, and although they were were tender, they weren't fall-off-the-bone like they are at Joe's. The chicken leg quarter has plenty of char, and it was fantastic, definitely my favorite of the bunch. There are two sets of sauces there, one sweet and one spicy. The sweet was a touch too sweet, and the spicy wasn't tangy enough for my taste. The burnt ends were well-rendered, but they weren't tender. That said, nothing was overly disappointing. The turkey was moist even though turkey tends to be dry, the sides were much better than they were the first time I came to Slap's three years ago, and the pulled pork was the star of the show in terms of texture and tenderness. Strangely, the pulled pork came unsauced but was very sweet--I've never experienced that before, but I'm told that's how Slap's prepares their pulled pork. Personally, it's not my favorite, but for Slap's die-hards, they're all for it. All things considered, I'd probably end up here if I was local to the area, but driving from down south, I'm inclined to stick to Q39 or Joe's. read more

Macaroni: 5/10 good, but nothing special. Reminds me of the microwaveable bob Evan's mac w/ bacon mixed in. Cheesy corn: 7/10 A classic. Corn and cheese - can't really mess this one up. I like adding a bit of bbq sauce or mixing the cheesy corn with the baked beans to add a bit more flavor. Coleslaw: 7/10 pretty good if you're not a coleslaw hater. Good crunch to the cabbage mix, and the sauce isn't overwhelmingly sweet. Potato salad: 9/10 the best side. Very much a comfort food. Warm, cheesy potatoes. Baked beans: 5/10 veryyyy sweet, and rich in flavor. But a classic bbq side nonetheless. read more

Well, depending on when you come you may expect a line and a brief wait. Indoors, outdoors and upstairs seating with a beautiful view of downtown Kansas City. The burnt ends were the best, but all the food was awesome. Mac and cheese has little pieces of bacon in it., and the cheesy corn is nice and creamy. The brisket and turkey were thinly sliced but provided in healthy portion sizes. People like to say the sauce makes or break a BBQ joint, and if that's true, it easily succeeds in that regard as well. read more

Pro: Opens right on time. Separate to go line. Helpful service. Good local price. Cute outdoor picnic style self seating and self service. Con: Poorly smoked, barely seasoned, no/low bark, watery bbq sauces. Warm potato salad!?! Got to KS and are just trying all the BBQ to see what is the hype. This was the 3nd place we visited and kind of was a waste of a meal. Got there 30 minutes before opening, waited in line with fine other locals, chatted about to get with them. Surprise, we are getting every protein to judge the hell out this establishment. Beef Brisket - No point, flat was a dried out mess. I have no clue what was their smoking technique but there was barely any smoke ring, the low amount of rub created barely any bark. Pulled Pork - dried out, flakey. Burnt Ends - If their idea of burnt end is to take the charred remain of the brisket point and cut it into cubes, I don't want to know. Smoked Turkey - Actually moist. Jalapeno Cheddar Sausage - Mild flavored, def can taste the smoke, needs more cheddar (see Wisconsin) Beef Polish Sausage - Overly salty, weird mix Warm potato casserole - So weird, perhaps this is a regional thing, but was definitely different than an usual cold potato salad. By serving it warm/hot, the potato was meshy and lacks a crispy cold bite to counter balance the salty meat. Slaw - minced, sloppy soggy bland disaster Beans - well done. dark and full of flavor - winner Corn - greasy soup that happen to have corn Mac - better than the corn, but that's not saying much Spare Ribs - like the brisket, poorly smoked and barely seasoned. The bark came out rubbish, it was steamed by whatever warming contraception, lacking in texture Quarter chicken (dark) - moist, which is a plus. skin was rubbish. The staff was pretty helpful with my order when I requested "half a pound of protein and smallest amount of your best sides". After trying to figure out the bread to meat ratio, they just give me a whole loave of bread. In retrospect with Kansas BBQ, it's just bland in comparison to central Texas BBQ, lack of seasoning and smoke, KC BBQ relies way too much on the sauce. Which in turn, was too watery like Carolinas style, without as much vinegar. So it's not just Slaps for folks that demands better BBQ, this place have a lot of great local reviews, but the food in this city is just very mild in general. If you are experienced with BBQ across the country, this could be the best you could get on this side of the state line for KC. LC Bar-B-Q is a dirtier hole in the wall but better on the other side of the state line. read more
we ordered for pick up and it was ready within 15 minutes. we got chicken, brisket and burnt ends. the brisket and chicken were perfectly cooked but definitely needed the barbecue sauce. the burnt ends were not burnt or seasoned enough. just kinda really fatty. we also got the creamy corn which was a pass for me. the coleslaw was refreshing though. i'd give closer to 3 1/2 stars if i could. honestly overrated compared to the raving reviews read more

On a road-trip to Colorado and found this wonderful gem in Kansas City. Pleasantly pleased when we saw a line forming before opening. Order the "Three Little Pigs" (ribs, pulled pork, & jalapeños cheddar sausage), while my friend ordered the "Cattlemen" (Brisket, burnt ends, & beef polish sausage), & we mixed together. All the meat was delicious and perfectly smoked. But the burnt ends stole the tray. The Mac and cheese, baked potato casserole, & cheesy corn was really good. The coleslaw though was a dropped ball. Almost reminded me of the store bought slaw you get at picnics. The service was great, location is easy to get in and out, and plenty of space to eat there. It's really a no nonsense place where you get food after you order from the line. The burnt ends are so good and smoky and not salty. The brisket is not fatty but not very smoky . The pork ribs were fall off the bone with good seasoning and didn't need sauce at all. The Cattleman combo was not our favorite bc there were only 3 pieces of burnt ends, some brisket, and lots and lots of sausage so we preferred more burnt ends. The Mac and cheese was ok but the cheese was like Kraft cheese and it wasn't baked, the cheesy corn was ok but there was more cheese and pasta than corn, the beans were good but The sauce was way too sweet and thick, The potato casserole side was kind of gooey And a bit salty, OK, also had a lot of mayo, and We loved the onion rings with very crispy and thick pieces of onion inside. I love the self serve condiments station w take out containers and utensils. We didn't have to ask or wait in line for them. You can buy a beer while on the line and drink it while you wait. There's plenty of seating upstairs w umbrellas from heat or sun or rain and seating right outside on the ground level as well as next to the order line where it's surrounded by mesh for bugs w ceiling fans but no AC. The only area w AC is while you wait inside the ordering area. Good deal for your money and fun atmosphere. The sides are generous portions. Free parking lot. IMPORTANT TIP: be very careful dispensing the Spicy bbq sauce (it's the big container on the self service table outside) bc the spices build up and once you press it, the sauce can splatter all over you bc it 100% happened to my bf and his whole left arm from hand to elbow, the bottom 5" of his shirt, and his whole shorts on the front. I had to hand wash it at the hotel w a bar of soap bc we are traveling. read more
Gawd, do I love me some Slap's! Divey in atmosphere, friendly with the service, but serious in the smoked meats. So the sweet sauce is a touch sweeter than most, but holy hand grenades does Slap's know how to serve up BBQ! Portions ain't shy and sides run from the norm (think fries & beans) to slaw, hush puppies, & more. Sauces are either sweet or sweet & spicy and you can throw caution to the BBQ winds and mix the two. Pro tip: do just that, and don't be gentle. I have sampled Slap's burnt ends, pulled pork, smoked turkey, & Polish sausage and I have yet to be anything south of delighted. Slap's burnt ends are juicy and charred just right, chopped into fat cubes of meaty wonder. The pulled pork has plenty of smoke all the way into the shoulder, moist as you please and has great flavor. And the Burnt End Combo is the ends with your choice of wingman meat, so try any of them. I like the smoked Polish sausage, and even the jalapeño cheddar sausage is outstanding! The place is not fancy, and why should it be? BBQ is messy and delicious and you get *involved* with your food. Find a picnic table, either inside or on the deck outside, grab some napkins and dig in. read more

Great BBQ! Fantastic Rooftop Patio! The ribs & pulled pork were fantastic. The burnt ends were on the dry side, but great with sauce. The mac'n'cheese is the really creamy, small pasta style. It reminded me of the canned mac'n'cheese. The cheesy corn is exactly as described. The bbq sauces are nice. I preferred the spicier one. The way this place works is, you line up and order your food at the counter, get your tray, then go find a spot to sit. The rooftop patio is fantastic. You can see the KC skyline. There are no umbrellas, so wear your sunscreen! Pro Tip: You can get a beverage (adult or non) to enjoy while you wait in line! Slaps is a great little spot to get BBQ but get there early because they do tend to run out. The last time I went, I got the pick two sandwich with brisket and jalapeño cheddar sausage. In the past I've gotten the other specialty sandwiches and while they were good, they were just a little too messy for me. The brisket is good. The sausage is also very good and not super spicy. The fries are also good. I tried the fried pickles this time and they were ok but I don't think I'd get them again. There was quite a bit of breading which resulted in soggy pickles. And they definitely needed some ranch. read more

I'm ashamed to say I've lived in Kansas City nearly my entire life and today was the first time to try slaps barbecue and I have truly been missing out and want to make sure that others have the opportunity to try this wonderful barbecue in Kansas City Kansas. Don't be scared away with seeing a long line. As once you get inside you understand it is a very small restaurant with a bar that has about eight taps of local brews. Plenty of bottled beers. And a order at the counter assembly line that truly works very efficiently. My wife and I got the sampler and added burnt ends and ribs and nothing disappointed us. The turkey was by far our favorites but everything else was delicious. We did baked beans and fries, and the baked beans were incredible. The fries were good, but I would probably try a different side next time. They atmosphere inside was very friendly and efficient but no seating inside with climate control. They had a outside eating area that had shelter and makeshift walls and picnic benches outside on an upper level as well as in front of the restaurant. Everybody was super friendly service was quick once you got to the front of the line and I really appreciated that once we got inside the bartender asked you if you wanted a beer while you wait and you just pay for the beer with your food. I will definitely be going back. They had a sweet barbecue sauce and a spicy. I preferred the spicy, but the sweet sauce was very tasty with some very obvious molasses to sweeten it. read more

I was close by taking care of some business and decided to take a lunch break. At first I was thinking why stand here in a parking lot? Well it was a short wait because you order food at counter and receive it and pay and on your way to sit and eat. So the 15 min wait no problem. I decided on the southern comfort sandwich, two bones of ribs and Mac and cheese side. Ribs hands down best I've had , tender and seasoned perfectly! Sandwich pulled pork with coleslaw amazing, my father in law got me started on these sometime back a favorite of mine. Pulled pork very good. Service great, gentleman watching tables leave him a tip! Wow, definitely one of the better (maybe the Best) BBQ places I have tried...ever. You can't find BBQ like this in California. We ordered ribs, brisket, beef sausage and pulled pork. The ribs are the best I have tried. One reason is bc it didn't have a strong smokey taste and the meat was cooked perfectly. The sausage really stood out too, very good flavor. We also ordered 3 sides and they were all outstanding. Very good sides. We ordered the baked beans, Mac and cheese w/ bacon and the baked potato casserole. The casserole was great, instead of potato salad they came up with the casserole and it was very good. If you're in the Kansas City area, I highly recommend Slap's BBQ. I've been to a lot of the high rated BBQ places in the area and Slap's BBQ is one the BEST! read more
Had to stop here because of the amazing reviews of Kansas bbq and this spot in particular. When we arrived we were able to find parking immediately although there are not many spots. The line was wrapped down the sidewalk so we know it had to be good. The meat was soooo tender but not a lick of seasoning. I will let the pics of the sides speak for themselves. Everything was very mediocre. This bbq had nothing on the bbq from the south. read more
