Smoke House is smoking! This post WWII eatery is located on Lakeside Drive/Olive Avenue in the city of Burbank, Los Angeles, California across the street from the back end of Warner Bros Studios. Opening its doors in the mid 1940s, a serving up beverage, food and live entertainment ever since. When you step into those thick wooden doors you can take in the rich history on the walls, images, panels, carpeting and unique layout with a both stair and a ramp toward the counter for reservations. Celebrating our friend Shaun's incredible birthday we had a big reservation for 12. I'd knew of Smoke House, but never thought about going and I'm glad I did for the occasion. Cheers, Shaun!! We were sat in one of the more quieter rooms deep inside near a toasty fireplace and a few other parties in the center of the room. It was good feels all around at the house of smoke. Known for their World's Greatest (cheeto crust cheesy) garlic bread other great beginnings (also known as the appetizers), soups, salads, sandwiches, steaks and pastas among other things. All the beverage options you could want and then some - sky is truly the limit. Plenty of vegetarian options and a few select vegan items, which made me content, the wine even more so. Though I did notice more than a few things were pretty close if you omit dairy for a dish, like the dinner salad and some sandwiches. We inquired ahead and got a great recommendation for the Pasta Primavera. The pasta dishes don't come with a side dish like the other meals, but are very filling and large in portion. Fried pickles were a big hit at the table as were all entrees, starters, cocktails and beverages of choice. They can only take up to three to four cards so plan ahead for this. The do have an atm inside for cash, it definitely makes your experience easier overall and especially if you dine at the bar lounge where you can enjoy some truly talented individuals on Friday or Saturday nights. There is a $25 minimum to enjoy this part of Smoke House and it's easy to do as well as worth it. It's valet parking ($8) or street if you can manage it, but I will say the street is possible, but also very much like flipping a coin. Restrooms are in the front half just before the lounge bar and the main dining areas (which are several large open rooms with tables, booths and tons of ambiance). Our servers were truly attentive and amazing the entire night. I'm not sure I'd rush back for the food, but I would come back for the experience, good company to enjoy it with, incredible service and of course a nice drink, especially a glass of red. Might take my dad here for a newly post retirement treat, he'd love some live jazz, Rick Whitfield and Higher Ground (some of the regular acts here). read more

I've been in Los Angeles about 50 years and have heard about how good the Smokehouse is, and of course, how they are famous for their Prime Rib! But somehow, I just never made it there, even though I am very fond of prime rib. So this Memorial weekend, I was invited by some friends to the Smokehouse and went. They made the reservations. I was really looking forward to having their prime rib, and was all set for it. It was the reason I was excited to go in the first place, other than being with friends, of course. So we get there and guess what? THEY DIDN'T HAVE PRIME RIB TODAY!!! Really??? From my perspective, they had one chance in 50 years. The service was fine, the staff pleasant, the other food they did have was fine, the atmosphere was good considering how busy they were, but the one thing I really went for, and the thing they are famous for? NOPE! I seriously doubt if I'll ever make it back there. And by the way, the Tri-Tip was as tough as shoe leather, a really poor substitute. I felt like I'd been had by a bait and switch. So if you make a reservation for the Smokehouse, and want prime rib, I suggest you ask if they are going to have it before you go there and get let down. read more

Unfortunately, i'm upset to leave this review because we love to come here for holidays, but this time was not a good interaction and unfortunately they not only get most of our order wrong, the hostess at the front with the brown hair was absolutely rude and awful. I made a reservation two weeks in advance and we waited almost 40 minutes. When you read the rest of the review, you will understand the wait for 40 minutes was for nothing. Please if you work hard and make a good living do not come here. I'm very disappointed in this because again we come here for every birthday and every holiday, but we will definitely not be coming here again. They cut my filet mignon in half to cook it ????? We came to Smoke House Restaurant for lunch last week and this place just oozes old Hollywood and my husband and I were here for it! We walked in and sat at the bar - the bar was very vintage and was surrounded by booths with plenty of seating. I loved seeing all of the old-timey photos on the walls of past regulars from James Dean to Walt Disney. My husband and I would have loved to be flies on the wall for some of the conversations that were taking place at Smoke House while we were there. Everyone was very friendly and you could tell all the regulars knew each other - we even met celebrity make-up and hair stylist Barbara Dally. For lunch, we ordered the New York Steak Sandwich with Fries. It was an open faced sandwich, but it was seasoned to perfection. The garlic bread on the bottom was a bit tough, but the flavor made up for it. It was simple, but really hit the spot! My only complaint was of the lady who walks around taking pictures of people - every time she came back to her station which is to the left of the bar, she would watch videos on her phone rather loudly right next to me and it kind of ruined the vibe whenever she was there. The best thing about Smoke House has to be the atmosphere and decor inside. It's super cozy but also cool and retro with an old Hollywood feel. The place is deceptively large inside and was very lively. The food itself was good, but nothing blew us away. Our waiter was super friendly and gave great recommendations. And you even get a free picture/post card to commemorate your visit. Overall I look forward to coming back, seeing as I can walk here, and trying more options! read more

Absolutely love this place! Eaten here many times and not once ever had a bad experience. Just recently went for my boyfriend's birthday. We got the cheesey garlic bread and a side of creamed spinach to share, I got the prime rib (came with 2 sides), he got the porterhouse (came with 2 sides), and a couple of cocktails for all under $150. It was a lot of food for a very reasonable price! His porterhouse was seasoned and cooked PERFECTLY and my prime rib melted in my mouth! The staff is always so nice and attentive. The food was good. Unfortunately, the service was not. We were a party of 5 with a 5:30PM reservation this past Saturday. It was not busy yet when we had arrived and were seated fairly quickly. Everything went downhill after. We were seated in a back corner booth behind the bar and basically forgotten about. There is a placard on the table that says we have a 2 hour limit, but it took 30 minutes before a server came by to even take our order. In that time we waited, there was literally a spider that landed on our table. We should have taken that as a bad omen and left. 3 of us ordered prime rib, and while I ordered the larger smoke house cut, it was smaller compared to my friend's who ordered the same larger one. Mine was about the same size as my other friend who ordered the classic cut. To add insult to injury, they spilled hot water on my friend's hand and didn't even acknowledge the burn or offer ice. Later, when I picked up my car from the valet, there were 2 scratches and the guy (Moises Alvarado) refused to take responsibility. The very first thing he said when I pointed it out was if I could prove it. He said I could call a number to review the video, but it would be $20 an hour to review the footage. Basically $60 for the 3 hours I was there. My car is only 6 months old. Not only was the service bad inside, it was outside, as well. We should have gone to Tam O'Shanter. read more

My first experience was not great, but I wrote it off as simply abnormal (there was weirdness with our chateaubriand as the waiter dropped part of it on the floor and then "replaced" that lost meat with an inferior cut. But they gave us a discount on it and we were satisfied.) But I came back again yesterday. We had an 8:15 reservation, they seated us near the bar area and it took almost 20 minutes to have a waiter. Then we got our meal, and my wife's meat was badly overcooked. They remade it. Again, badly overcooked. Find out why, apparently they are slicing the meat before cooking it, which guarantees that they overcook it. This was what we suspected with our chateaubriand previously as well. But then things got worse. They turned all the lights on full blast and started cleaning the restaurant around us, still fairly crowded. The smell of cleaning chemicals completely ruined the evening for us. Food isn't great. Atmosphere wasn't either. There are too many great steakhouses in the LA area to eat here. read more

I wasn't impressed with the mandatory valet for $6.50 (a specific charge to guilt you into giving a $3.50 tip, which I will refuse because I don't like being manipulated). I met friends for lunch, and was happy when they chose this restaurant. It has been a few years since I have been to the Smokehouse, and I have missed it so much. The distance is the ONLY reason that keeps me away. The first time I stepped into the restaurant, I felt I was transported back in time to the 1950s or 60s. The restaurant was established in over 75 years ago! Usually, I have a sandwich, tacos or salad for lunch. On this day, I had a mega open-face Prime Rib sandwich and it was incredibly delicious!! We just had to order the famous Gatlic Cheesebrrad. Beware, they will "ask" you if you would like bread, but it is not complimentary. We didn't mind the nominal charge, though, it was worth it. I love the leather booths, wood trimmed furnishings and the wait staff professionally dressed in white shirts and black slacks. Their stellar service and robust menu keeps their customers returning year after year. Popular items are the French Onion Soup (Fri-Sunday only); Prime Rib Sandwich, Chateaubriand (for two ... isn't that romantic???), Rack of Lamb, Pork Chops, BBQ chicken and ribs, plus Seafood (Stuffed Salmon, Shrimp Scampi, or Lobster tail). We had previously been to the Smokehouse for a private party, so we could not order from the regular menu. We went again to have an early dinner. The wait was very short, maybe 5 minutes. We were seated at a table for two, which was perfectly fine. The service was astounding and very attentive. The regular menu is very large and diverse as far as traditional American food. We both ordered prime rib, regular cut. We started with the fried calamari. This was very good and we ate all of it in short order. The prime rib was a decent size and came with steamed vegetables and a "classic" side of your choice, as well as au jus and two types of horseradish sauce. My only disappointment was the texture of the prime rib. I have had better. The restaurant is very old style with leather booths and dark paneling. They charged full price on the martinis. Three came to $51.00 when the menu quoted 7.00 or $11.00 for the side car version. I was never good at math but a second grader could figure out three times $11 is not $51. I learned my lesson. Always check. It's very common these days for restaurants to pull a fast one on their patrons. Don't even get me going in kitchen and service fees and exorbitant tipping requests. My husband and I ate here yesterday. As usual the food was outstanding. We attempted to make a reservation for11:30, but nothing was available. We took our chances without one and headed over at 11:15. The hostess was amazing and squeezed us in right away without a reservation. The reason they were so booked was because of 3 private events going on while we were there, adding around 250 additional people to serve. Even with all the extra patrons, our service was AMAZING! No problem getting refills of drinks, and our food came out quickly and was cooked perfectly. Way to go Smokehouse! Highly recommend if you haven't been here yet. Also, the prices are very very reasonable for type of food and atmosphere. Salads are giant! Cheesy bread is a must! Burgers are outstanding! Thank for a great experience again! Smokehouse Review: My experience at the Smokehouse was absolutely atrocious. We wanted to celebrate the engagement of my daughter and my future son-in-law and chose the Smoke House for both excellent previous dinners and the ambiance we knew it to be. We sat down on time but it took nearly 20 minutes to get a drink order in. Inspecting the table, they had sat us at a Costco folding table. No joke! A nice steakhouse seating people at a plastic table! The waiter took our drink order, we put in for appetizers, and then he immediately asked if we wanted to order our mains. It felt a bit rushed, like he wanted to turnover the table quickly. Drinks and appetizers came out around the same time. Almost 40 mins into our service. The garlic cheesy bread was cold. Drinks were great. We ordered our mains. When the food came out, our it was all cold. My creamed spinach had congealed, the veggies were cold, and the meat had gone cold. Dessert was good. They mentioned a congratulations to the newly engaged couple but it didn't feel like a welcoming experience. It felt forced. I will say that the gentlemen refilling the water and clearing the plates were very attentive and personable. The water never ran dry and we never had a empty plate sitting on the table. All in all, the Smokehouse has always been known to provide excellent service and a great meal. Unfortunately, we did not have that experience.
