The things that are wrong with Smoke House are the very things that are so right with it. Let me explain. As everyone here says, this is an enveloping throwback to a time in the golden age of Hollywood when dark spaces with luxurious deep red leather banquettes welcomed A-listers as they made their way past a black velvet bar, nodding and shaking hands with other celebs in the industry to have a long lunch of cocktails and steak. All those glam elements remain and one is reminded instantly of West Hollywood clubs as if they outgrew their cramped headquarters and moved to Toluca Lake where they could stretch out and relax amid beautiful old trees that line the surrounding streets in this upscale neighborhood. One man's vintage is another's dated. For me it is both, and I have to say, I love the old school qualities that have kept Smoke House going strong for decades. It could be a hidden treasure, unless you are one of the fortunati who know Lakeside Golf Club right next door. That and the business magnates that still come here to make epic deals keep the glamour intact and you feel it when you come in what is a rather inauspicious entrance. Once you reach the top of a short flight of stairs, Smoke House expands before your eyes and room after room appears. Here is where you could have that '40s retro wedding party, with a dance floor and stage to boot. Pictures will say more than I should here about the decor. Notice that, while it may seem to be yesteryear, i.e., the 1950s, there are fresh orchids all over, sparkling glassware, thick linens, deep, comfy seating and everything from floor to ceiling is spotless. The greeters act as if you are a long lost friend and the servers are all professional, cheerful, and solicitous. Several stopped by to make sure we had what we needed and Ryan, our personal attendant, was the epitome of efficiency and caring. He noticed when we ran out of something and brought it, unasked. Isn't that extra? The food we ordered was good, even very good, but not unique or highly flavorful. For a fleeting moment, I feared there was bacon in the spinach dip but we came to the conclusion that it seemed so because of its smoked gouda cheese and I relaxed. It was delicious and Ryan saw to it that we had two rounds of chips to go with it. I ordered the Mescalita made with famed 400 Conejos mezcal and it was smoky, edgy, and wonderful. Then we had the joy of choosing from a dozen exceptional desserts all made, save one, by the house pastry team. They looked and tasted exquisite. Parking -- a usual fright, especially in WeHo or BH -- was a breeze. There is a huge parking lot adjacent to the restaurant and valet parking. We saw a shady spot (on a scorching hot day) on a nearby street and chose that instead, just to keep the car from melting outright. A short walk gave us a chance to appreciate the quiet beauty of Toluca Lake. If I were to give Smoke House a few suggestions, they would be: make sure the vegetarian or vegan offerings are marked clearly as such so no one has to guess; keep the kitchen door closed (perhaps it was only open because of the heat this particular day?), as the bright lights and controlled chaos therein interrupt and spoil the intimate clubby darkness that characterizes the rest of the place. Also, the Mescalita arrived in a cracked glass. Once we noticed it, Ryan whisked it away. A fresh cocktail and discount on the one we received broken would have been a gracious touch, as cracked glasses are a huge no-no in culinary establishments and against HACCP rules. Neither was offered. The prices are good. The food was fresh. Our carrot cake was loaded with fresh carrots and the vegetables in my Pasta Primavera were crisp, as they should be. The service was a bit slow but then again, the place is huge and has only one kitchen, it was pretty full of diners when we were there at an off afternoon hour. It wasn't Ryan's fault, but I don't want you to be impatient. No one hurried us. There were people lingering at the bar the whole time we were there. This is a place that you can come to, feel at home, relax, know you will eat a very good meal and be appreciated, away from the bustle and frenetics of the usual L.A. restaurant scene. Frankly it's already a little sad that they would stay open during Christmas eve and Christmas so that employees can't spend time with their families. But I heard other customers saying management (particularly one named David who I've seen other reviews mention) and the owners are refusing to stop taking reservations and walk ins leading to over crowding, and incredibly long wait times, which causes people to become upset and yell at employees. I can only assume it's for more money. This place, at its best, is fine. The food is ok and pricey. At its worst it seems to value its own greed over the safety and happiness of its employees. For the record, I am fully on board with the idea of keeping a classic place "classic." But maintaining the original atmosphere does not mean neglecting upkeep, letting the carpets get shabby, etc., letting the menu get stale, etc. This place needs a serious update. The whole place seemed run down, like a cruise ship restaurant right before the ship is dragged in for a renovation. The servers were clearly overextended, as ours ignored us for the entire evening and we had to keep flagging people down for water, dessert, etc. I'm not sure why everyone is so impressed with the prime rib, as it was just standard (and very fatty) prime rib, with what looked (and tasted) like a Stouffer's microwave potato and frozen vegetables. You will indeed be transported back in time (it honestly felt like the early 1980s in here) if you eat here with your eyes closed, because the food is definitely straight out of that era. But if you open them, you'll feel like you're in present-day Branson, Missouri, with run-down decor and everyone standing around in ripped t-shirts and cut-offs. And if you think you're going to spot a celebrity here, let me disabuse you of that notion. No celebrity is going to be caught dead here, unless they're on a downward trajectory in their career and are longing to be surrounded by a bunch of tourists to boost their ego. read more

I had the worst ribeye in my steakhouse experience. Ordered it medium rare and although color was about right it was tough, chewy and inedible. Server offered to bring another one but if a steakhouse can't get it right the first time, no second chances. They cut the price in half for the ribeye. Should have not changed anything. I guess this restaurant is NOT for everybody...unless you are more or less the older generation and appreciate everything that I have said above. My son and I were there again on the night of Christmas Eve and had an EXCELLENT dining experience! Yes, AGAIN!! This place is becoming to be a RITUAL for us for the Holiday Season. I can't say enough good things about this lovely restaurant. In every way on every level. All the employees are SPOT ON!!!! From checking you in until checking you out. That evening we were served by Uriel S. He gave us an EXCEPTIONAL service from the moment we sat down until it was time for us to leave. Shout out to Uriel!!! He deserves a nice raise. We ordered 1 Holiday Half Garlic Bread, 1 Caesar salad, 1 H-Smoke House Cut 1 Peppercorn sauce, 1 Chicken Buena Vista, and for dessert we got their creamy, yummy Chocolate Mousse and for drink I got Pellegrino mineral water. I've been here twice; the first time I ordered the ribeye and second time I ordered the filet mignon. I thought their filet mignon was nicely seasoned, tender, and juicy. The portion size was perfect for me. Vegetables were delicious and cooked with garlic which I loved. The famous garlic cheese bread is always a must order for the table, it has a sharp cheese taste (presumably parmesan) and super garlicky. There is a large and extensive drink menu as well and the food menu is not limited to steak. The steak came with a side, and I ordered the sweet potato which I would give a 5/10. The butter from the sweet potato did spill over to my steak which made the meat taste even better however. Onion ring had nice breading but was also ok. Service was so friendly and attentive! They were very accommodating towards a large party. The restaurant is reminiscent of old Hollywood and is decorated with movie posters and dim lighting. I visited this establishment a few years ago, as a post-memorial gathering for a colleague of mine's father and from what I remember, the food was good albeit that was not the primary focus for the get together. Now that I had a opportunity to visit this restaurant a few years later, I was mildly surprised it was still standing and one of the most iconic destination in downtown Burbank, California. The decor is nostalgic; red Naugahyde lounge seats with dark walnut fixtures adorn the entire interior giving it a Hollywood-vibe reminiscent of Burbank with all it's film and television studios (like Culver City was back in the 50's to the 70's). On the walls are black and white photos of stars from yesteryear from Humphrey Bogart to Sammy Davis. Jr. and a few more recent personalities. 50's music is playing in the background, soft enough for ambient sounds and not too loud to drown out casual conversation at the table. This evening, our server is Robert. 5/5 I started the courses with a jumbo shrimp cocktail for two and was not disappointed. There were 6 shrimp (10-12 size) which they should have re-named as "colossal" as they were enormous like baby lobsters in a nostalgic metal cocktail decanter bathed in red cocktail sauce enveloped in crushed ice to keep the protein ice cold. 5/5. Next we had the restaurant's specialty "World's Greatest Garlic Bread" to which was aptly named maybe for back in the days when restaurants did not do garlic bread properly however now, most high end places will add cheese and garlic to their baked bread most likely duplicating this recipe. 3/5 The wife had the "Steak Sinatra" which is filet mignon sauteed with peppers, tomatoes, shallots, garlic in a red wine sauce (their homage akin to a steak fajitas in my opinion) served on a bed of linguine however she opted for mashed potatoes in lieu of the pasta. 5/5 I had the double cut pork chops (touted as freshly cut from their own butcher shop) with bartlett pears and sage dressing and rice pilaf on the side and asparagus spears. The chops were a bit dry but very flavorful. This entree may be a seasonal option as it was not posted on the website but definitely on the restaurant menu. 4/5 To our amazement, they offer "live" music with jazz and vocal performers of yesteryear, music appropriate for this atmosphere. Unfortunately, no one was performing at this time when we visited. Tonight, we enjoyed our dinner due to the atmosphere, ambience and service. For the what you get, the cost is less than what you would expect for this quality and service. A great place to relax, indulge and reminisce of days gone by. It's Hollywood famous and good fantastic! The service was impeccable and the atmosphere was kitschy cool and classic comfortabke. It was so neat to be in the midst of the history of all that have been here and frequented here but the food is what you really come for - it's that good! The brunch is so worth it - it's on the weekends (check with the restaurant to be sure the times). Crepe station, waffles, breakfast, stuffing and prime rib or turkey or ham, salmon, salads of every kind and fresh fruits and cheeses, desserts and a chocolate fountain... oh my goodness - take a lil art he photos - words almost can't describe! This is my second time visiting and I really enjoy it. I usually start with a plate of snow crabs then I move on to the breakfast fare such as freshly made omelet and crepes. There's eggs, bacon, sausages. Don't miss the sausage. You have the meat section with tri-tip, ham, and roast beef? I didn't partake in this section so not sure what the third meat option was. I usually skip meat these days on rare visits at buffets and stick to the seafood which included snow crab, shrimp, salmon, and raw oysters. There's waffles in the back corner and better than average dessert spread which includes creme brulee. Their fruit spread includes even dragon fruit. At $80 per person including mandatory 18% tip, it isn't a weekly dining spot, but an experience to return to for all- you-can-eat snow crab legs in a historic Old Hollywood setting. The service levels were very high even if tip is already included. Don't forget to bring hand sanitizing wipes for the crabs. David treats the host stand like his personal fiefdom. Putting your name down for a table depends entirely on his mood--some nights he's dismissive, other nights he argues about your party size or wait time estimates as if you're bothering him by showing up. I've watched him debate with customers over basic requests, sigh heavily at simple questions, and make people feel like an inconvenience for wanting to spend money here. Once you're seated, don't expect improvement. He never checks on tables, never asks how the meal is, never does anything to make you feel welcome. He just patrols the room looking for problems to inject himself into. David clearly doesn't care about customer experience--only about being in charge. I am a frequent customer at the Smokehouse from date nights to big brunch parties. My family have celebrated many birthdays here and each time was a great experience. The brunch is amazing - they serve prime rib, Alaskan crabs, Mexican and American food. They have chefs that cook your omelette infront of you. Deserts galore. The servers never disappoint, always attentive. For tourists and local visitors, they have filmed many movies here. My favorite one is La La Land. This is a must visit. It was that time of year--December--when I go on my annual prime rib bender. This time, we decided to try Smoke House. I've lived in Los Angeles my whole life but had never been to this LA institution. It was crowded due to the season, but I can't complain about the wait or the table. It was... basic. Honestly, I'll probably never be back. Like most old-school restaurants, they do have good cheese bread--but you have to order it. It's good, but not Northwoods good... and it's free there. Of course, I tried the prime rib and went with the large cut--whatever they call it here. It wasn't good. I didn't even finish it, which should've been a red flag to the server. Usually, I can fall back on the ribcap of the ribeye for some flavor, but there was nothing redeeming about my piece of meat. The restaurant is directly across from Warner Brothers Studios. If you are lucky you may even dine with a star. There is some street parking. If you can't find a spot, then Vallet is the only option. The extensive menu offered plenty of land, sea, air and vegan options. I ordered a Teriyaki chicken that was paired with fresh vegetables and a yummy potato. The sauce was very thin and not my favorite. My human had the BBQ chicken. He said it was good. Another member of our party had a stuffed salmon, which was absolutely delicious, according to him. We opted for a full order of the famous garlic bread. Overall, it was a lovely experience. However, next time, I will skip the chicken and go with the steak. Prices are reasonable. You'll be hard pressed to find a better cheesy garlic bread, if you do - immediately DM me and drop the deets please, thank you. We all had the clam chowder bowls and I think we all said yes to the hit of sherry atop. I'm not turning down my option to booze up a single thing. I've never had a boozy clam chowder but I'm here for it. Delish! I could have stopped right there, soup and bread but I ordered the filet mignon with an onion ring, sauteed spinach and cheesy baked potato. All very tasty. My bestie had the NY steak and seemed to enjoy it. How I managed to roll myself out of the booth and back to the valet stand without a wheel barrow is a mystery to me. Eccentric crowd, fun spot! I have been here before in the past, but most recently on Presidents/Valentine's Day weekend. Was extremely crowded but with a reservation, we were seated within about 10 minutes. Considering the amount of people dining, I thought we were destined for bad service but quite the opposite. Waiter came around and got drinks to us within a few minutes and did a really nice job refilling our water glasses throughout the night. I ordered the New York steak sandwich on their garlic bread and it was superb. Everyone else in the group got other dishes including prime rib, a pasta, and the ribs and they all enjoyed it as well. Pricing was also way better than what you see at other high end establishments. Will be looking to come back soon for another great meal. read more

I used to love the Smokehouse. I've been there dozens of times. Sure- the food isn't great and the ceiling tiles are mismatched and need painting. Sure, it's one of the worst cocktails in town. Sure, you get hustled for a photo package that's going to add to the cost of your dinner. But I still love the place. I work in film, and being there feels like you're among friends. Until tonight. Last time I was here, I saw that Linda Kay was performing. I love Linda Kay. I went on the website but you couldn't book that far out, so I called. I said that I wanted to see Linda Kay and booked an 8:30p table. I got there today at 8:15p, was told they'd call me name when ready. A half hour later at 8:45p, I check and am told that they can't seat me until 10pm. I tell them that's ridiculous, I have a reservation. The hostess says that they can seat me but not at the bar, where Linda is performing. I'm upset. The woman next to me has exactly the same problem. We both had called, were given 8:30p reservations for Linda Kay. So we both had reservations at 8:30p to eat in the entertainment area but neither of us could eat there til the entertainment was over. Or we could eat- late- and not hear the person we came for. I left, and won't be coming back. There's too many good places to eat and drink to be treated like this. Everything else on the strip across from Warner Bros is out of business. We came for lunch to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday on a weekday in March. It wasn't terribly busy then. Smoke House is a typical L.A. institution: dark and windowless, outdated-yet-charming décor, autographed headshots on every wall. One can almost smell the erstwhile stale cigarette smoke the place was surely saturated by. The people at one of the tables next to you are likely directors, producers, or movie stars. We started with strong, generously poured martinis and an order of The World's Greatest Garlic Bread, which has mixed reviews here. We loved it - we both enjoyed the powdery topping, tangy flavour, and soft texture. We ordered lunch portions of the baby back ribs and tri-tip steak. The full rack of ribs, even the lunch serving, was a huge amount of meat, and also came with a giant onion ring. The steak was tender and flavourful. The baked beans were delicious. Our plates came with grilled corn, but neither of us could even touch the cobbettes after all the other food and drinks (we each also ordered a beer when the food came). As a Southerner (from upper east Tennessee), I know good barbecue - and Smoke House's BBQ sauce was excellent: thick and slightly spicy, slightly sweet. You get a buttload of it with your meal; they don't skimp on portions. The terrific food and special Hollywood history make Smoke House a must-try for both locals and tourists. read more

Sunday brunch is back! We were so happy they decided to bring back their Sunday brunch buffet. My daughter loves the pasta station and chocolate fountain. They were pretty busy, so make sure to call ahead. We were seated in Mimi's area, and she was such a delight! She immediately greeted us when we sat, offered us mimosas and despite having many tables to check on, she was always making sure we had everything we needed. Mimi is the best!! Went there on Valentine's Day for lunch, my first time. Sis made the wise decision to park in the neighborhood cause we needed the short walk before and after. The vibe was classy, clean and pleasant with old Hollywood vibe, black and white pics of artists of old. Service was quick and very friendly which always adds to the overall experience of the meal! I ordered the prime rib, medium rare. The presentation was beautiful, the mixed vegetables looked vibrant and fresh and sautéed mushrooms tasty. I would have preferred fresh horseradish to creamy style but my fault for not asking - I assumed it wasn't available when it wasn't offered. I worried when the meat was difficult to cut but was pleasantly surprised when the chew was super tender. The cheese bread was beautiful and addicting. The spinach artichoke dip was an excellent complement to the crispy tortillas but you can make these at home. Sis had rack of lamb also looked beautiful - might ask for that next time. The menu is pretty impressive and see quite a few I'd love to try next time but will likely go back to what I've already enjoyed. Lol. The children's menu includes prime rib which is even more impressive. I moved away for a few years and expected the food quality to deteriorate but surprisingly it did not! The service is always good and the atmosphere is what you'd expect from an old school Studio system restaurant. My family loves the Sunday Brunch - all you can eat in all categories. The Smoke House Restaurant is a nice option if your parents are visiting and want to eat somewhere with an old school Hollywood vibe. The dining room really looks like it came from an old movie and is quite the experience itself. I've been for brunch and for dinner and prefer dinner. Get their prime rib! The garlic bread is dece but idk if it's the world's best like it's called. It's a little up and down, some visits were amazing and some left me a little underwhelmed. Still a good spot to get prime rib and feel like you're in a 60s movie. read more

The food is absolutely mediocre, the service is extremely erratic, and the parking is $10; but the musicians who play in the lounge are frequently wonderful and draw me in: Rick Whitfield every Friday night, the Chris Banta Trio every other Thursday night, Rat Pack Ricky on some Thursdays, and Joe Finkle & the 7/10 Splits occasionally. We took the Warner Brothers studio tour and along the route, the Smoke House Restaurant was pointed out as George Clooney's favorite restaurant. So much so, that he named his production company after it. It was early enough, so we decided to try it for lunch. The place is an old world mobster hangout. Lots of wood, red carpeting, waitstaff dressed in bowties, red vests, white shirts, black pants. It felt like a hangout seen in The Sopranos. And as tourists, we totally didn't fit in. It was a good ole boys club. Evidence to that was a table behind us of a bunch of older men that were producers in the film and music industry. They asked if we wanted to order their famous "World's Greatest Garlic Bread" and we ordered a full order when we only needed a half order. The bread was really good. "World's Greatest"? No. Good? Yes. I got the French Dip. It was a good French Dip sandwich. Is it the best? No. Decent? Yes. My wife got a salad. I don't remember which one. She. said it was good. The best? No. Decent? yes. It was a good meal. The prices were a little high for what it was. Are they raking in some money from the tourists visiting the Warner Studios tour? Absolutely. It's a decent enough place to visit and maybe (maybe) catch a glimpse of someone who might be shooting at the studio lot that day. Would I go back when I'm back in town? Nope. Too many other places to go that aren't tourity. read more
