Dynamite! We don't know why we've waited so long to try this delicious local spot. I lived in Maryland for a few years and have had barbecue in various cities including North Carolina and Smokey Mo's is JUST AS TASTY as any of those spots. The meat is melt in your mouth tender and slides off the bones. The sides are fantastic, well seasoned and yummy. I'm a huge okra fan and the fried okra I could eat for days. Their mac n cheese was sensational (could easily also just order that for dinner!) and the coleslaw was refreshing, and a perfect balance of tangy and sweet. Other bbq locations in Tucson tend to over season their meats...not the case for SM's. In fact, the balance is ideal with perfect flavor from the meats and seasoning. Yelp always gives the best recommendations! First time in Tucson and busy taking care of an estate...we used Yelp exclusively! Smokey Mo was fabulous! My husband is from Kansas City so he was excited to learn the owner is originally from KC, which means the BBQ is legit! We sampled french fries, baked beans, cole slaw and mac and cheese. Barbecue was solid. Meats were clearly fresh smoked. The Restaurant is in a rougher neighborhood, but the food was solid. Sauce was okay but felt like it was lacking flavor. The woman at the desk was super attentive and gave kind suggestions when asked. The restaurant felt clean and well kept. The Mac and cheese was some of the best Mac I have ever had from a barbecue restaurant, which is often an overlooked side. The brisket was well smoked, but just not my particular style, and the rib tips were solid but felt over sauced IMO. Would recommend to someone who likes a more well cooked brisket. I'm normally not one to give a perfect score after one visit but Smokey Mo is incredible and deserving. We ate around 5pm on a Saturday and while it was almost empty when we arrived, by the time we got our food a line had formed. After eating it made perfect sense. My girlfriend got the two-meat plate with pulled pork and brisket while I excitedly ordered the burn ends special. Each meat was tender, flavorful and served in a reasonable portion. The price is right in line with most other BBQ spots I've eaten at recently and the employees were friendly despite obviously working hard for very busy-seeming takeout option they offer. The house sauce, which came atop every meat, was sensational! Slightly sweet and spicy it paired immensely well with the fatty bites of the burnt ends. The fries were also an unusual standout, most places that serve thicker-cut fries as a BBQ side are irredeemably soggy but these were crisp and well seasoned. The restaurant itself is small and heavily decorated with Kansas City Chiefs decor on just about every wall. There aren't a ton of tables inside but they have patio seating if the Tucson heat will allow it. I absolutely can't wait to go back and try more menu options! read more

Oh, man, great BBQ. Great sides. My daughter and I shared the sample meat platter, which at $27 for four meats, four sides, and two drinks, is a good deal. We choose tri-tip. Tri-tip! Hardly anyone outside of California, and Central California especially, doesn't know about tri-tip. We also had chicken, ribs, and hot links. All were very tasty. (We agreed, however, that we liked the amazing chicken at another establishment.) They were already out of the brisket. Sad face. For sides, we got collared greens, some of the best I've had anywhere, the cole slaw, baked beans, and mac & cheese--all excellent. I also splurged and had the sweet potato pie. That was OK, didn't knock my socks off, though. For drinks, they have Kool-aid there! That was a treat for our drinks. I think they are one of the better BBQ places in town, and although really four plus stars for me, I would definitely recommend that you go and give them a try. 5* = A top favorite. Mind-blowing good. I will definitely return and I will go out of my way to go here. Worth every dime of my money. 4* = Outstanding. Tucson-top-tier. Some elements not quite as good as it gets, but it still is worthy of my regular business. 3* = Good experience. I had a hankering for some BBQ and I knew I didn't want to go to a chain. This is a no frills joint with some authentic KC BBQ, which I've only had once at Arthur Bryant's years ago. I went with my go-to, a pulled pork sandwich, with a side of mac n cheese. I'm a bigger fan of messy, saucy barbecue over dry rubs, but this was a nice balance and emphasizes the smokiness of the meats (obviously) with the help of mesquite. Not overpowering and just the right amount of richness from the smoke that works well with the juicy pork. I was expecting something more like shredded pork but this was closer to strips like brisket, and never had peppers and onions on pulled pork before. Glad they threw in pickles and pickled onions. Overall, a very good/different pulled pork experience. I might ask for an extra side of sauce next time. The mac and cheese was super cheesy and a nice accompaniment. Definitely going to try other meats and other sides but this was a solid meal. The staff are friendly and it's super casual and fairly small inside (the old Shari's burger spot). At the moment, it's all takeout but it's well worth it without a dine-in atmosphere. It's all about the food. Support local/black-owned business and try this place out! This is hands down the best BBQ in Tucson. We have been searching for good BBQ for a year since moving here from Florida. Today we finally found it! Its not just good, its above anything we have had in years and better than anything the Carolinas have to offer. The pulled pork is soft and moist and flavorful. The chicken was lightly smoked and falling off the bone. The sauce was bursting with spices and slightly tangy, a little heat and robust. We loved that is wasn't sweet but was savory in taste. The collard greens were phenomenal, and the slaw was perfect, again, not sweet but flavorful. Service was excellent. We ask before we left about the origin of the BBQ and its a family owned business that originates from Kansas style BBQ. It was quiet when we went, but I would imagine soon this place will have a huge following. For the win, Smokey Mos!!!!! You have to try it! read more

It was a drive by I tell ya! A total assault on my senses when I drove down from Florence to check this place out. I gotta say that the brisket sandwich was awesome! Some of the best brisket I have had in a while. Tender and moist with a tangy bbq sauce that was ladled on in just the right amount. The sandwich was huge, and the rings were lightly battered and oh so sweet. It's not a big place on the inside, and they had no wait when I was there but five minutes later the line was out the door. Plenty of patio seating is available but in the middle of summer will be tough to enjoy. The employees were super nice and I'm going to have to go back this weekend with the wife so she can try it. read more

I stop by this joint every couple weeks because I'm seriously addicted. I've checked off most all of the menu and have not once been disappointed. My go to is a pulled pork or a brisket sandwich. To be completely honest I just sit on the patio and read sometimes for a couple hours after I've finished my food just because it smells so incredibly good. The woman who took our orders was very rude and unprofessional from beginning to end, and the food would have been horrible without that fact. 16 dollars for a side of glorified dry turkey sandwich meat, the burnt ends "special" was rubbery and devoid of flavor except for the poorly seasoned extra vinegary ketchup they call bbq sauce, and perhaps the worst cornbread i've had: doughy and stuck to the foil. I'm not sure how they managed to get this many positive reviews. I stopped in yesterday for takeout and wow, I'm so glad I did! We used to frequent Shari's Drive In in this spot and have been watching for years to see what was next for this space. I was so excited to see it's BBQ, and great BBQ at that. I ordered a two meat combo with brisket, ribs, collard greens and mac and cheese. It was all delicious! Food was ready very quickly, hardly had time to sit down at our table . The brisket was pretty good, just wish there was a little less fat. Pulled pork was also pretty good. One of the guys working there said the fried okra and onion rings are the only items that aren't homemade. We thought $30 for all that food plus 2 drinks was a great deal. We even had leftovers! I had high expectations for this restaurant, as it had very high reviews. My hubby and I have high standards for bbq, as he makes a mean smoked meat. Well as usual we were disappointed! The meat had no seasoning and was so bland. Hardly a smoke ring to be found. The texture of all the meats were good and the ribs were fall off the bone, so that was good, but just no flavor. We feasted. This was a great change-of-pace meal while road trippin' through the Southwest. And most importantly, the BBQ is no joke. Some of the best I've ever had (not sure how much weight that carries from someone from the Bay Area...), as the meats were all rich with flavor and tender and lathered up in sauce.
