I have been watching the reviews for some time. The pictures have been most helpful for me to judge since palates have bias. I was hesitant to try due to some of the first pictures coming out, and the pizzas reminding me of generic pizza with too much cheese. I wanted Neapolitan style, but the OG in this spot was Sicilian and hadn't cracked the code on flavoring the crust right. Now, Smoking Monkey, I am proud of you! You made some changes based on feedback of your locals who live here and will dine here (and for Magnolias finest - for takeout) the most. *We did a 1/2 Hawaiian, 1/2 Seattle special aka mushroom truffle. From what I can tell: the pizza was not over or under sauced. It was evenly cooked, perfect brown and what I call "fun spots" from where the flame catches the crust just right, without over doing it. Not too densely packed with cheese. Flavor of the crust came through, though lightly it was good enough. The pie itself altogether had good flavor throughout, and good texture - not overly chewy and not too thick. I previously mention that I prefer Neapolitan, which is thin and flavorful, and has crispy fired up bits. This one did a good job coming close and it doesn't need to be exactly that. Smoking Monkey never claims this, just know they do wood fired really nicely. To wrap this up, we dined in and enjoyed some wine with dinner and find the inside inviting yet open despite its size. I look forward to summer coming so I can dine out in their patio or bring a pie to Golden Gardens. Love the extensive pizza menu, but wish it included some fresher ingredients throughout, like tomatoes, basil, Kalamata olives, and goat cheese in a greater variation and in more pizzas. Is that me being bias?! Yes :) I like fresh and light and felt the combos were a bit more traditional American and seemed like I could take one pizza and remove or add one ingredient to then make the pizza 3 places down. It's fine, but I worry if I make changes I can end up being charged in a confusing way. Not that it's a big deal, but I don't love sausage or certain cheeses and feel other pizza places I frequent have better variety from the start so when I go halves, I keep modifications to a minimum. That's ideal for us and the business, in my opinion. read more

I really want to love Smoking Monkey. I'm a local who prefers supporting our neighborhood spots in Magnolia over the big chains, but after two attempts, I'm feeling pretty let down by the lack of consistency. My first experience was about a year and a half ago. I called in a pickup, but when I got it home, the bottom of the pie was like charcoal--completely burnt and inedible. I wrote it off as a one-time fluke. Fast forward to a few nights ago--I decided to give it another shot via delivery. Because of my last experience, I specifically added a note in the comments asking the kitchen to please watch the crust so it wouldn't burn. While it arrived on time and smelled incredible, it was a total "cheese soup" disaster. There was such an unbelievable mountain of gooey cheese that it completely buried the meat toppings I paid for. I did not order a cheese-only pie, but it was so over the top that I could barely find the meat through the mess. It's frustrating because the flavors seem to be there, but after one "charcoal" pie and one "gooey mess," it's hard to justify a third try on my own dime. I really hope the team can get the quality control under control, because I'd truly love to make this a regular go-to. For now, I think I'll be sticking with Ichiro Sushi & Teriyaki--they are always fresh and never disappoint! read more

I ordered the Onion Rings and Monkey Tender & Fries during the Seahawks game. The delivery estimate was 45 minutes. I called the business, when the order was 10 minutes late. The only thing she said to me was that they were super busy because of the game. No apology. Nothing. I'm being announced to me, after that, they literally told the delivery driver to turn around when he was on his way to my house. I HAD TO FILE A DISPUTE WITH MY BANK. I had called yesterday twice about getting a refund. I called again this morning, I've got the same "Oh, the owner/manager will call you back to do the refund. Their menu is extensive with lots of options for pizzas, pastas and more. The pizza is descent. We ordered half Hawaiian, half DTR. We enjoyed it. The service, however, needs some work. The staff is courteous, but it's not prompt and not super attentive. I had to ask them to take the menus away, to take our dirty dishes away, and to give us water. The restaurant had only 4 customers there when we arrived, so it was by no means busy (though I know they were also preparing pickup orders). While we were there, a table of customers left because no one was attending to them. I think they could be a really great place if they were more customer-oriented, more attentive to details, and friendlier. I would be willing to go back. read more

Smoking Monkey took over the space the second owners of Queen Margherita pizza occupied. This new joint is the second location for Smoking Monkey, which has been in business in Renton for a decade. You don't stay in business for ten years slinging pies if you aren't doing something right ... Take the poor reviews with a large grain of salt. Ordered one of their meat pizzas with red sauce--this is my standard for judging whether or not I'll be a future customer. I can't remember ever eating a wood fired pizza that didn't have some char on the edges, but the crust was great-not soft, not crispy (note: I'm not a fan of crunchy pizza crust). The pizza was absolutely loaded with toppings, which is something you just don't find everywhere and the flavor was terrific. As other's have noted and the only thing I'd say wasn't up to my personal pizza preferences, is that they need to use more sauce. I'm a sauce guy, usually order sauce on the side if it's offered. A bit bummed by this pizza. We were excited to try a new addition to Magnolia. We ordered 2 pizzas and cheese sticks. There was hardly any sauce and way too much cheese on all of them (like a half inch thick). The bottom crust was also not crispy like we expected for a wood fired pizza. Great food- great service. We were greeted immediately and felt welcomed. We ordered a few appetizers and three pizzas. The garlic wings were moist and had great flavor. The blazing bacon monkey sticks was basically a pizza without sauce but very good! For our pizzas - the first one it was great to have the option to build your own pizza for my daughter who has issues with lactose. The waitress doubled checked all ingredients for her to ensure everything she wanted had no dairy. It's great to have people with patience and checking everything for us! The last two pizzas were the menu - we ordered the Swinging Monkey Deluxe and the Meaty Monster Pizza. The pizzas were both cooked perfectly, crust was delicious as were all the toppings. I also loved that they have a large menu of non-alcoholic beverages which was perfect for my dry January. I had the Hibiscus Blossom. It was wonderful! Definitely a great addition to Magnolia and better flavor than a few of the other pizza places in the community. We will definitely be back! read more

First thing I noticed was the staff looked kind of scared and defensive. Food-wise, the salads are very good (buffalo chicken salad bowl and House salad); However the pizzas (black mushroom truffle, Hawaiian, etc), pastas (Alfredo, etc) and appetizers (zucchini sticks, wings, etc) our group ordered were horrid. The pizza's cheese (if it is cheese) is stringy, tasteless, and rubbery; how a wood-fired pizza can have zero taste of being wood fired is beyond me. Everything else tastes like premade from a can like it was purchased from a restaurant wholeseller. The pizzas are also way to greasy for my liking. I used to come across town for Queen Margherita pizza that was located here before it closed. Adding misery to the SM experience, staff know it sucks and are left bribing customers with 10% off your bill in exchange for a 5 star review. I can't imagine what Smoking Monkey's owners had in mind moving a grossly subpar Italian bistro into a high-end neighborhood. What did they expect it would yeild except failure? Especially after taking the spot of one of the best pizza places in the city. What an absolute FAIL. There are 10s of excellent pizza places in Seattle. This ain't one of 'em. read more

Strange tasting crust. Hardly any red sauce on it, looked more like a bit of tomato paste. A ton of cheese, way too much. Probably the worst tasting pizza I've had in 10 years. How is this possible? Was excited to try this new place. Didn't know if we were going to dine in or take it to go. The music was so loud we decided to take it home. After looking at and tasting the pizza, we noticed very little sauce and ingredients. The crust is also soggy. We came in on a whim on our daughter's birthday when we smelled the food from outside. Our experience was amazing! The waitress was so sweet and accommodating. Everything on the menu sounded really good. We ordered a large pizza, half cheese for the kids, and half pepperoni & black olive for the adults. It was so good! When we finished our meals and ordered a box to take the rest home, we were surprised by a monkey mascot and a birthday dessert for our daughter! Not only was it delicious, but the whole production made our daughter so happy. Lastly, the price of our bill was very affordable which is always a great bonus. As others have said, the pizza crust is very soft. But I was not nearly as offended by this as others were. The toppings were high quality and the price was not bad for Seattle. The "mocktails" are all pure sugar concoctions. The dragonfruit one did not come with the garnishes it promised and was heavy with concentrated syrup. The waitress spoke VERY quietly, which was very hard to understand. We ordered a pizza, wings, and garlic bread, and the garlic bread did not come out until we were done with the other two (though it was VERY good) The wings were also good though came with no celery/carrots and defaulted to ranch instead of the obviously correct blue cheese lol Overall this was fine, but in no way better than any other mediocre Seattle pizza place, probably not worth coming back to. read more

Unfortunately this was a very disappointing experience. Based on the pictures we had seen online we anticipated the food service to be a little more... sufficient. Yet we were met with whatever this culinary experience was. Not sure if you can tell in the photo but the 'Fetticine Alfredo' is brown. Brown. The sauce is brown. Not the noodle. How do you do that. We also ordered garlic bread, and the garlic bread had WHOLE cloves on it. The delivery service was good except for the fact that the bottom of the bag was absolutely soaked with butter/oil of some sort. I'm extremely disappointed. I used to enjoy Smoking Monkey whenever I was in Renton starting a few years ago. I would dine in or else order a whole pie or two to go, and it was always good. Those days are over. New ownership seems incompetent. Both the food and the atmosphere have been destroyed. They never say who "voted" them "Best Wood-fired Pizza" (or whatever), but if it's at all true, then that must have been before the new ownership, or maybe it's just totally made up bull (we are proud to be voted...blah, blah, blah...yeah, but by whom...oh, yeah, you're not). The Magnolia location (much closer to where I live) seems to be suffering too. I don't think this business will survive for very long if they don't make big improvements quick. read more

Don't know why there are so many bad reviews. Came here to got the Wild Chicken Alfredo and it was great. Great portion sizes for the price as well. And I got the garlic bread with extra garlic. Unfortunately, just not good. We've given this place three tries and each time more disappointing. Don't mean to hate on a small business, but this is the truth. Menu is way too big and it shows... everything (we've eaten) is average at best... and unfortunately that stands for the pizza too. The pizza is inconsistently cooked, very light on toppings, and the taste is nothing special. Again, we've tried three times from the week they opened until a few weeks ago... plenty of time for them to "work out any kinks" and figure out their service. We hope they figure it out, but this seems to be consistent across our review + friends we speak to in the area. Best of luck, we really hope they turn it around. read more
