Took Matt R.'s recommendation and ordered the sirloin strip appetizers. Came on a bed of fresh baby spinach leaves, with rice and a teriyaki sauce - cooked to perfection - was excellent. Bit of a wait to get in here - expectation was set for 20 minutes, took 12 to get in. Ended up sitting right by the rail on the channel side - beautiful view for dinner. Were even able to see/hear (faintly) the musical fountain. Wait staff weren't unfriendly, but weren't friendly either. (Could improve there.) Service was prompt. Overall atmosphere is crowded sociable fun. Out of pure curiosity, I had Portabello Mushroom burger. Oh-my-gosh - who knew vegetarian burgers could taste so great! It was perfection. Hubby/son/daughter all had burgers. They all agreed they were quite possibly the best burgers they've ever had in a restaurant, with a really beautiful smokey flavor to them. We have older kids - they were fine there. Younger kids, probably not recommended - seating is quite close, weather affects your meal - dress accordingly. I agree with the others that it's a great location and right on the 'Boardwalk.' It was really nice to sit outside on a nice day. We had lunch there on a Thursday and had about a 20 minute wait for the patio. I will say that they have a good turnaround on tables and they keep people moving. I had the 'Southwestern Salad' which I thought was good. I didn't add any meat to the salad and wish I had. It wasn't that filling with just the lettuce. My husband had the 'Grand Salad' of turkey, ham, bacon and tomatoes and thought it was pretty good and filling. Overall - decent food with a great view of the boardwalk. read more

What a disappointment. We are on a weekend getaway to the Muskegon area and asked the hotel to recommend local places. Snug Harbor was one that the hotel staff recommended. We drove by it earlier in the he day and it looked great. It turned out that the location and views while dining are great; however the food was not. Perhaps we had mis-set our own expectations and thought that this would be a great seafood restaurant. It is not. The menu had few seafood selections ( unless one is into sushi). The service was good. The food that we had was not. My perch sandwich was average and served on a below average bun. My wife ordered the chicken burrito and it was almost inedible, with a tough wrapping that she could hardly cut through, much less eat. The waitress had the burrito taken off the bill. So the bottom line is that our experience was that is a nice place to eat, in terms of the ambiance and views of the river, but the food was not something that we'd ever come back for. Perhaps there are some items on the menu that they do well. We'll never know. read more

Great atmosphere!! Loved having dinner on the water with the sun setting. Beer and drink selection is good. Menu is very nice. Well rounded with lovely fish entrees, steaks, sandwiches and lighter fare. We had side salads, clam chowder, halibut, crab cakes and a steak. All was very good. Well we are in the road again. Rainy today, so, dove into the Snug Harbor. Place is normally just outside, but they had tent sides up with heaters. Very comfortable. Only a few people inside, it is November, and service was pretty fast. We split the Caesar Salad, Roast Beef club and added a couple of beers. All was wonderful sitting by the channel, lighthouse light blinking in the distance and good food. Maybe next time sunny and 80s would put it at the top. read more

I have been to snug harbor a few times and it was never anything special. Tonight's visit was absolutely awful. Took FOREVER for a server to come to our table and when she did she was nice, but was extremely slow. I ordered the cashew chicken lettuce wraps ($16) and my friend ordered the snug burger medium with French fries ($14). The amount of chicken I received was absolutely comical. My friends burger was cooked well done. I am so incredibly disappointed and dissatisfied with my meal tonight. There are many other places to eat in the area and I would suggest any of those before ever going to snug harbor. Such an awful dining experience. read more

The Only redeeming thing about Snug Harbor is the view - and having a nice cold beer, sitting on the deck watching boat traffic. The food however is simply AWFUL. Sadly, it has been for years. It is basic, overpriced and without flavor or quality. From frozen to fryer - from canned to table. There are very few residents in all of the tri-city area - Grand Haven, Spring Lake, Ferrysburg - who would recommend this restaurant for its food. Last weekend we decided to give it a go again, simply because the day was beautiful, and we wanted to enjoy the water view. Stupidly (but optimistically) ordered food. Bad bad bad bad bad! Greetings from the Host fell flat. He had as much personality as a wet rag. He said 'There's a wait' when asked how long he said 'I have no idea'... we would have been fine with a ballpark. No attempt to let us know it was a limited menu (we were going for the sushi) so after the 20 minute wait we were seated and given a shortened menu that didn't have any sushi on it. They survive by appealing to tourists with average food and drinks for a three-month period. You will probably like the location on the water, but the food is simply average. The real disappointment is the service. I suffered through a dinner where our waitress practically ignored us. She had three tables and it was March, but she hardly came to our table and I had to go to the register to ask for my bill. I personally witnessed a bartender pick up trash off the floor and make drinks after that without washing her hands. She handed me my water from the top of the glass. I didn't drink from it. During that same visit the staff was feverishly cleaning the restaurant to prepare for closing, basically ignoring customers. The place wreaked of cleaning materials and it was only 9:15 PM (they close at 10 PM in May). The staff is clueless as to how bad the service is, because they are not well-trained. The problems here stem from management. It's obvious that they are concerned with turning over tables and making money from June to August on tourists. Here's an idea: offer some reduced price options for locals in the offseason. You might endear yourself to us and we might tell tourists about you. The deck is a great place to enjoy the sun in the summer. If you're a tourist you probably won't care about the service, and it's obvious Snug Harbor doesn't care either, as long as the line keeps moving. read more

I have been going to Grand Haven my entire life of 26 years. This summer was the first time I tried Snug Harbor. We had a visitor from Brazil and my boyfriend from Virginia. I would say out of everyone, my food was by far the worst. I got the chicken burrito which had over cooked chicken. The rice was dry and the black beans were crusty. There was so much tortilla it was overwhelming and the sauce they put on it tasted so gross. The chips I asked for were unappetizing and not good at all. My boyfriend and our guest from Brazil were slightly underwhelmed with their food as well. Our server clearly didn't want to be at work. She checked on us enough but wasn't into the work at all. Overall I was disappointed. I won't be recommending it to a friend anytime soon. The only good thing is the view. read more

Drove from Grand Rapids to eat on the channel and afterwards walk the pier. The cocktails were sad, I had the Old Fashion it was the worst one I have ever tasted! I only drank a bit of it and ordered a beer, I figured they couldn't mess that up my wife had the rum runner it was basically pineapple juice for $12, when the food came her chicken teriyaki was way over cooked actually burned, yet they served it! I don't normally like to give less than four/five stars, but the service was absolutely terrible on the day we went. We decided to check out this place after living in Grand Haven for a while. The patio just happened to be open because of the warm fall weather. We sat for at least 15 mins before our server came over and he acted like he had never served before. He kept telling everyone - "we're normally not open" which was a strange excuse. He kept forgetting orders, tried to give us food that wasn't ours and took over 20 minutes to bring the check. The only saving grace was the food. My burrito was pretty good. My boyfriend had the fish and chips, which he said was average. Nice views of the river is the reason to eat at Snug Harbor. Was within walking distance of our place as an added bonus. We ate here about two weeks ago. Walked in from the street level - you can turn hard left to go out to their outdoor deck seating, hard right to their sister restaurant, Jelly's, or somewhat to the left and down a fairly narrow staircase to the indoor dining room which is basically at river/lake level. Went with the Thai Salad ($14) which was okay - nothing wrong with it, just not my thing. Bottle of Blue Moon $4. Companion had the Flat Iron Steak appetizer ($18) which was not only delicious, but enough for a meal. Snug burger $11. Sesame Chicken ($16) was delicious too. Still House Recipe ketchup. Why don't all restaurants serve Heinz? They have a kids menu with several good choices. 5 year old son had Kids pasta ($7) and was still hungry afterwards. Waitress tried to charge us for milk that kids menu clearly said it came with, but after confirming with her manager, realized that first cup of milk is indeed included (free). read more

Beautiful view. I got the perch dinner ($23) and my boyfriend got the seafood penne ($26). Both were delicious and the tartar sauce was very good. My only complaint is that there were only 3 entrees available right now. The two meals we ordered, and then Salmon. I believe in slower seasons they have a few more options though. I would definitely go again and recommend it to people coming to Grand Haven. Awesome alcoholic drink options as well. read more

Fans of Meijer brand white hamburger buns will be psyched. For people who actually expect a "brioche bun" to be something other than a 10 cent white bun, keep looking. During what would turn out to be the last warm night of the year, we were walking in downtown Grand Haven and noticed the deck at this joint was still open. There were only 2 tables of people, so we decided to give it a go. The hostess seated us sullenly, then proceeded to sweep under and around our table. Several minutes later our waitress came over and took our order. I decided on a sandwich, which according to the menu would be served on a brioche bun, and opted for the fries at a $2 upgrade. My husband got a burrito. It took roughly 40 minutes for the food to arrive (I am able to accurately time this by the fact that Jimmy Buffet completed an entire story on the concert cd they were playing over the loud speaker). During this time I was able to witness a gentleman order scallops, and be informed without an apology or a smile that there were no scallops. When our food finally showed up, the aforementioned bun was a sad, cheap GFS thing. Even worse? The fries - all 5 or 6 of them - were oddly damp in spots. My husband's burrito came with a sealed packet of sour cream. I've have never been served sour cream in a sealed packet in my life, even at Taco Bell. There is a fine line between casual eating and fast food, and this place is firmly on the fast food side quality wise. So other than those items, how was the food? Remarkably unremarkable. It took just as long to get the check as it did to get the food, and we finally left cash on the table fearing how long a credit card transaction might take. At this point it was dark and cold on the deck. It seems that many restaurants in Grand Haven suffer from the idea that they don;t need to bother with either good food or good service due to some notion of "shoreline atmosphere" being the real attraction. In this case, the "atmosphere" is the same view you would get from the park below, except serrated by a scratched and buggy acrylic shield. Why? Were people committing suicide by jumping off the deck after tasting the food? Just one more mystery about this place to think about after you ponder why people continue to eat here. read more

I ventured up to Grand Haven while in Muskegon for business. There are lots of things to do along the water, including dining at Snug Harbor. We ate on their large outdoor patio overlooking the water, very scenic. Some of the tables have umbrellas, some are full sun. Their wine list and drink menu was pretty solid, although I expected more craft beers on tap. For dinner, I ordered the parmesan crusted roast beef sandwich. It was served on dark rye with toasted parmesan on the outside of the bread. The sandwich had rare roast beef, lettuce, tomato, and provolone (I think). The sandwich was outstanding, and huuuuuuge. I ate just a little more than half and was stuffed. What was really cool is you can order Jelly's sushi from Snug Harbor. I tried one of the inside out rolls, I can't remember the name, which had crab, shrimp, avocado, and cucumber. For not really liking shrimp or avocado, it was delish! My dining partner ordered the blackened ahi tuna sandwich (medium) which was served on a large brioche roll. It was quite good, although I advise next time to order it rare or perhaps just seared. I definitely want to go back and try some of the sushi and the fish dishes. read more

The food was un-inspired, un-seasoned, and left us wishing we had gone to Applebee's or Chili's instead. On a recent vacation with a friend, we decided to have a nice dinner out. Snug Harbor seemed to be the busiest place, which to us meant it was also worth checking out. The entire experience, from our first interaction with the hostess to the food we ordered, was incredibly underwhelming. Upon arriving at the restaurant, we went to be seated outside. The hostess mumbled and didn't give us a direct answer to our question of how long of a wait it would be to eat on the porch. We also asked about the restaurant Snug Harbor is attached to (or the restaurant attached to Snug Harbor?) called Jelly. Apparently you can serve food from both Snug Harbor and Jelly in Snug Habor's dining area, but Jelly only allows Jelly's food to be served in their area (it looked like a few tables sectioned off from the rest of the building). Whatever -- we sat inside, which was fine. The interior is wonderful and even the inside had great views, with big windows and a lot of open space. We ordered the smoked salmon bruschetta, which was goat cheese and smoked salmon on small toasts topped with capers and onions, as well as a balsamic vinagrette sauce. While anything with smoked salmon is automatically delicious, this appetizer fell short in a few ways. We couldn't taste the goat cheese, and I was impressed with how thinly they managed to spread it on the toast. Additionally, the balsamic sauce completely countered (read: ruined :( ) the taste of the salmon. But whatever --- my friend liked it. Different strokes! I also ordered a side salad, which was nice and fresh. The blue cheese dressing, however, had to have been watered down to at least one part dressing one part water. I would expect this from a cheap place, but I didn't pay $4 for a side salad and some very light blue cheese dressing. He ordered the crispy chicken wrap - phenomenal!! The honey mustard dressing had the right balance of flavors and the lettuce inside really added a good crunch! I really wish I had ordered that. I, too, wanted something with a crunch, so I thought nachos would sate me. Unfortunately what I was given was something I wish I didn't have to pay for. While I do appreciate the even distribution of cheese and chicken throughout this two-pound monstrosity of an entree, the entire thing tasted like it had been microwaved to hell. The chips were old and strangely moist (they'd bounce back if you bent them...), and the chicken was too dry - a characteristic that makes me suspect a microwave was used. The spices (cajun, I think?) on the chicken were good, however. I think they had an entree of the chicken with the same spices, which might have been a better choice. Overall, the atmosphere of the restaurant was great, the food subpar. Maybe next time, Snug Harbor. read more
