So I have been a customer sin 1994 in the Soccoro's in Van Nuys. When they came to Granada where I now reside, I was excited. I am sad to say that after several crappy encounters, I'm finally breaking up this toxic relationship. It is clear that the have no respect for customers. The wing turn on AC when it's 1,000 degrees outside, barely even a greet or smile, won't offer menus, won't write down orders, when they get orders wrong it's your fault, ignore special requests, run out of everything, once they laughed a customer who slipped and fell due to their negligence, the list goes on and on. I always come here for the food and never have they gave me burn steak in my burrito. I came back to show them the burn meat because the lady on the phone didn't believe me and told me to bring it in like to test how true it was. I brought it in and showed her and the lady had the nerve to tell me that it's just really cook all the way when it's straight up black. And starts argue with me about well I can't give you another one bc it's half way eaten I'm like well I notice until then and you can clearly smell the burn meat. On top of that she told me to bring it in so I can get another one I didn't request it. This place is the standard by which I judge all other Mexican restaurants, I've been all over the west coast and eaten at countless Mexican eateries but none have hooked me quite like this place, I have yet to find a place that is as delicious as this place (you get good bang for your buck too) I don't remember the first time I ate here since it was soo very long ago (my best guess is about 20 years) and the fact that I still go back on a regular basis even after all this time is a testament to how good this establishment is. The reason why this place has maintained it delicious flavor and zest is because this place is still owned by an old man who hails from the mexican state of Michoacán and has incorporated his family's recipes into the food they serve here I do have a few caveats with this place though 1. The dining area isn't always clean 2. This location is almost always full especially on weekends so consider taking out 3. They don't accept any cards so cash only 4. Their bathroom is filthy, so take care of business before you go 5. (Doesn't bother me because I speak it) most of the waitresses only speak Spanish so brush up, or use a translation app. Even with all those cons I still rate this 5 stars cuz IT'S JUST THAT GOOD Overall if you're looking for a good mexican restaurant that stands high above the rest hit up Socorro's Restaurant you'll be glad you did Lastly my recommendations 1. This is a hole in the wall kind of place nothing fancy about it but the food in overall is good authentic Mexican. I have been coming here for years and for the most part the flavor has been consistent. Here are the plates I like and keep to them everytime. The rice, beans and hand-made tortilla are the highlights. The Asada Gordita is my ultimate favorite with the pico de gallo salsa. The menudo is pretty good with or w/out pata depending your taste and whether they have it. The Asada combination and lastly Cheese Enchilada's. They have agua frescas and I get either Jamaica or Pina. The dining room is small a few tables and depending the day and time you have to wait if your dinning in like I do since I am not from the area. Service is a hit and miss I have had booth good average and bad but heck I return because I like the food. I'm a regular here. This is, without doubt, 100% authentic Mexican food. This is not a big chain or anything like that. The cooks are mostly women who probably been cooking this food all their life. The food does not taste like it was made in a restaurant, it tastes like actual homemade food. I think I finally found my go to Mexican restaurant close by. This restaurant is about 2 blocks west of Tommy's on Victory. It's located in a small plaza that can be kind of hard to find. It does share a lot with a Chinese/Thai take out. That restaurant is easier to spot than Socorro's. I ordered the carne asada plate. It came out to $8.62 with tax. The meal came with 2 slices of asada, refried beans, rice and a small salad with half of an avocado. Included with the meal are 4 homemade tortillas. Let me start with the carne. I have to say that this is one of the best I've had. It's juicy, tender and has flavor. Keep in mind that this is a real piece of flap meat and not a piece of meat that looks like shoe leather like a lot of Mexican restaurants. The meat here had great flavor and not salty at all. Other establishments carne are either bland or overcooked and that makes the texture livery. I really liked the fresh tortillas they give you. Did I mention that they are homemade and they give you 4 pieces? Other places use store bought ones and only give you 2. While waiting for my food, I can hear the ladies in the back slapping the tortillas into form. Not only was the carne good, but the refried beans was actually pretty good. I was craving for more. I went in to order a beef burrito and as I was ordering the girl walked away to help another customer so I was standing there confused, then came another girl and without washing her hands or even using gloves she made my burrito. Then she didn't wrap my burrito good and placed it next to a dirty towel, so at this point I said something "excuses me that's not closed and its touching the dirty towel" she gave me a defensive attitude and said "no it's not." So today for lunch my wife's brings me a Caldo de Res (Beef Soup) and since I have never liked meat in my Caldo de Res I always get nothing but veggie as is the case today. Although my rating is simply for the food part (Since I Did Not Go Eat At The Restaurant) I will rate it as such. I have had better....... It was flavorless and grant it everywhere I go I eat it the same way "VEGGIES ONLY", it tasted watered down very dissapointing. I was really hoping for it to be good, I will give this place a follow-up visit to eat something different to see if they merrit a 4 or 5 star review to be fair. My lovely daughter & I had a lunch date & of course she chose Socorro's. We attempted to go to the one on Sherman Way & Kester but man oh man does that place get crowded. I couldn't resist I ate 1 tortilla & picked at the rice & beans. Nom nom nom so delicious, I couldn't even finish my plate, I took more than half of it home. I think its the lack of carb's my tummy was so full. My daughter ordered a Burrito de carne asada with no lettuce. Really who puts lettuce on their burritos? This ain't Taco Bell baby. My daughter loved her burrito so much that she was eating tiny tiny bites at a time. I was so shocked she let me taste it. It was delicious. I love Socorros for 2 huge reasons handmade tortillas & Ranchera steak that is used for their Carne Asada. If you drop in make sure you ordered Horchata (rice water) it is so delicious you can taste its homemade taste. BOMB TACO JOINT in the valley. I was home for a few days and told my cousin I was in need of some serious OG tacos almost as bad as he was in need of a shower. After waiting around for 3 hrs to sober up we jumped in his Ferrari/Ford Bronco and headed to Socorros. Tacos here are Michoacan style, thick corn freshly made tortillas and thick slabs of carne asada. This is what I call Mexican. For some reason after moving from San Francisco to Los Angeles, I had the hardest time getting the more "taqueria" type mexican food, it was either chipotle, el torito, or chevys.. and the other mexican places i went to, just did not compare.... then I went to Socorro My coworker recommended it, and so I said "why not" - and the rest is history, I have to go there at least once a week for the Sope Combination, these meaty piles of awesome are too delicious to pass up. Top it off with some salsa and sour cream... and yea, its amazing. I have also tried a few other dishes, and they do not disappoint. Socorro is definietly a place I try to go to once a week. I think their secret sauce is the fact that everyone that works there makes the same food they serve to you, at home for their family... the staff is awesome, and i've even learned some more spanish just from going.
