Gf and I came by after some light rock climbing and built up an appetite. Upon entering the plaza, parking was a bit limited but was expected as it's pretty late into a Sunday afternoon. It shares the parking plaza with other busy restaurants next to it as well. Sojo is a quiet, small restaurant with options to sit outside as well. When ordering, you use your smart phone to scan a QR code and checkout via their website as well. It's all connected to their POS which makes ordering food super convenient! We ordered the butter miso ramen with extra toppings, spicy miso ramen with extra toppings, deep fried chicken, and takoyaki. They have happy hour for small plates between 11:30am - 6:00pm pst for $4 so we took advantage of that. The ramens came out really nice with a ton of variety: options for different noodle types, different toppings and salt level adjustments; allowing the customer to freely change to their tastebuds. The small plates were fire too. Takoyaki being made very nicely and the chicken being very juicy. The only downside is that the offerings are a bit small. So if you came hungry, expect to do more add-on options like we did! Lastly, the service was very quick. We received our food very quickly and was seated fast as well. Update: since I crave ramen, I decided to order from Sojo Ramen since I had good experience last time. But this time I was totally disappointed. I ordered for pick up: Black garlic tonkotsu, butter miso tonkotsu, and chicken karaage. The order was ready on time when I arrived. When I got home, I was shocked to see that the ramen I ordered only include broth, noodle, chasu & green onion! I thought last time they gave us bamboo shoot & black fungus as well. Wow! I checked back to ordering system and saw that each additional topping is $1! Honestly, I'd rather a bit more and have at least some toppings on my ramen than cheaper ramen with only noodle & chasu. Another disappointment was the broth that tasted off (had some fishy taste). I thought maybe it was because of the black garlic oil but the miso broth also has off taste. The most heart wrenching thing is that the itty-bitty portion of $6 chicken karaage! It was totally not worth the price! The 6 pieces were teeny tiny like half of regular size chicken nuggets!!! TAKEOUT REVIEW: I don't usually like to do takeout with soupy noodle type dishes, but they really pack everything so well that you can have that dine-in experience at home. The noodles are kept in its own container, and then there's a container that goes over the noodle container for the meat/veggies. And finally, there's a separate container for the soup. It was so easy to assemble everything. I thought the portion was kinda big, so I actually made 2 meals out of my order. With everything kept separated, it kept well for the next day too. I saw that they had a mala ramen, so I wanted to try it. Decided to come on a Thursday night and there was no line. We also ordered chasiu fries and tsukemen ramen with black garlic broth. Mala shio ramen, regular noodles, less salt (added marinated egg and roasted seaweed, which came in a bag) 3/5: I figured that since it's a shio broth, it might be a little saltier, so I ordered it with less salt. Bad idea because it made the soup flavorless and all I could taste was just spice. The mala soup wasn't very numbing or spicy. Very tolerable, but don't order it less salt! There were 2 slices of chasiu and it was okay, I feel like it was a little bit on the dry side. The marinated egg tasted like regular hard boiled egg, and not with a slight sweetness to it. Overall it it's okay, but I would like to try it with regular salt next time. Tsukemen, black garlic, regular noodles, extra chasiu 4/5: this was pretty good and had good flavor and not too rich. Definitely a great idea if it's warmer outside, Chasiu fries 4/5: this was pretty good with chunks of chasiu. The fries were pretty crunchy as well. Good ramen! I'm pretty picky with ramen, as my yelp nickname Ramen Sheriff suggests haha, but I enjoyed this bowl. I ate it so fast that I shocked my mom lol. Contactless menu. They start black tonkatsu ramen at $13.50 and you can select your toppings and noodle thickness. I got medium noodles, added marinated egg, black fungus mushroom, fried garlic, and homemade chili oil (free), so my bowl was $17.50, a bit pricey, but everything was good. You can also select regular or less salt. I chose regular, my mom chose less and thought it was still flavorful, so I would choose that next time. We also tried 3 different appetizers for only $4 during happy hour, which was 11:30am-6pm even on the weekends. Fried karaage, calamari, and mochiko shrimp were all delicious. Had a lunch meeting at Sojo Ramen this afternoon (Thursday). We decided to eat here to support the inaugural Fremont Restaurant Week! Since it's in a plaza, there's lots of parking but it did get pretty full when I arrived around 12:30pm. There'll still be spaces, you might just have to walk more. The restaurant was quite busy as well, but I was able to get seated in 5-10 minutes for our party of 3. You can view the menu and order on your own by scanning the QR code on the table. From there, the food came out pretty quickly! I went with their Restaurant Week special, "Restaurant Week Ramen": a Tonkotsu Shoyu Ramen - Pork base soup flavored with soy sauce, pork chashu, green onion ($12.50). For an extra $3, I also added some crispy chicken. I'm not usually a fan of ramen, but I would def order this again. Lots of noodles, good broth, and the crispy chicken was pretty good (though for $3, I wish they added more than just 3-4 pieces). It was pretty filling overall - a good size that you could finish in one seating if you're hungry or even have some leftovers for later. I had some karaage on the side- nice and crispy with juicy tender meat inside! I tasted a little bit of five spice powder in the batter, never thought of that but it was good! My ramen was good but I felt that the broth was alright. It was flavorful although it wasn't as thick compared to other ramen places. It was a bit thin and watery. The chashu was my favorite part- tender and melts in your mouth. The soft boiled egg were good- I love to dip my noodles into the yolk. We came here on a Tuesday evening and it wasn't busy. The one thing that caught my attention was their appetizers, it's only $4 during HH or $6 regularly. We ordered the Black Garlic Tonkotsu w/marinated egg, Mala Shio Ramen w/marinated egg, and the pork chashu taco. You can customize your bowl on the paper they provide you. There are different flavor bases to choose from (curry, tonkotsu, etc). The ramens were just okay. The broth was a little plain but it did come with lots of noodles. It doesn't come with many toppings and each additional basic topping was $1 so your ramen could easily go up to $20, which I thought was a ridiculous amount to pay for ramen. Based on the ramen, I'm surprised this place is a solid 4-stars and there are so many good reviews. Although I thought the restaurant / service was definitely 4-stars, the ramen was so bland that I have no desire to come back. What I ordered: 1.) Black Garlic Tonkotsu You would think this would be an extremely flavorful Ramen by the sound and look of the dish (see picture) but it was very bland and watery. I also thought the portion size was a bit small but given the price at $12.50, I guess it's fair. The broth to me is one of the most important elements of Ramen and I love a rich-in-flavor / thick broth. This is definitely not it. 2.) Tonkotsu Ramen Same as the above. Very watery in taste minus the black garlic taste. 3.) Takoyaki I always get Takoyaki as an appetizer if it's available and thought this one tasted pretty decent. You get 4 octopus balls for $6.00 which is fair. I can recommend this dish. Sojo Ramen is a nice quaint ramen restaurant. The interior is decorated with modern Japanese decor. The service was fast and server friendly. Our orders came to our table in about 6 minutes! Black garlic ramen - 5/5 (without additional add ons) The ramen broth was very creamy and tasty. The pork broth was perfectly seasoned, not overly salty. The regular ramen noodles selected (you can select a variety of noodle types) were cooked perfectly. The base price of $13.50 for your selected ramen only comes with thinly cut char sui. You can order add ons to increase condiments that might be included with ramen at other eateries that serve ramen. Each add on price averages $1 to $1.50 each and since condiments even more costly. The amount of ramen you get would be considered small by most standards. Dipping Ramen (Tsukemen) - 2.5/5 (without add ons) The noodles were cold, not warm as I've had at other trance eateries. But they were cooked perfectly, not too hard or soft. The green onions were not chopped, but cut in 3-4 inch pieces. I prefer the green onions to be chopped. The thinly cut char sui was included in the base price with this selection. The dipping broth was also disappointingly cool, not warm. The flavor was not as I expected. There is a spice or seasoning that throws off the flavor. It didn't taste like a pork broth. With the whole selection being cool, it was my guess that this dish is Sojo's way of making Tsukemen. Sojo Ramen portions are small but we will return so that I can try one of their other traditional ramens since their Black garlic ramen was excellent. I LOVE SOJO RAMEN! The food here is delicious and very reasonably priced. The small plate appetizers and sake are only $4 during happy hour. Such a good deal! You can also get free gyoza if you order your food online at the table. My mom and I got two tonkotsu ramens and an order of furikake fries. I also asked for chili paste to put in my ramen, which I think makes the ramen even more tasty. The broth is rich and I get super full even before I finish the bowl. The fries are yummy too and have a slight buttery taste. The restaurant is located in a large shopping center so parking isn't an issue. Service here is good too. Overall: 4.2/5 This place has a unique QR code ordering system. The QR code is specific to your table so everyone can view the menu and add in their order on their own. They have a really good appetizers happy hour which ends at 6:00 PM on a weekday. It's funny to say that their appetizers are better than their ramen. Black Garlic Tonkotsu Ramen ($17.50): The ramen is $23.50 but we added in a lot of extra toppings which greatly increased the price: marinaded egg ($2), crispy garlic ($1), garlic chive ($1). I also got the house made chili paste on the side for free. The garlic and chive was great for sharing. The marinaded egg is a must for ramen. The broth itself just didn't taste authentic or had a strong tonkotsu flavor. I added in a lot of the chili paste to make it taste better. House Hot Sake ($4): On the sweeter side so I liked it. It doesn't have a strong alcohol aftertaste or burn. We were able to make HH so all the appetizers were $4 each. Nasu Miso: The eggplant was so good and full of umami. Must try! Chicken Karaage: Also very good. Furikake Fries: Crispy fries but light on the furikake. Bronze Broccoli: Light but different kind of seasoning. Not as good as the eggplant. Mochiko Shrimp: Loved these more than the chicken karaage. Takoyaki: Very fresh and yummy. Chili Garlic Calamari: I don't like calamari but these are one of the best ones I had. Solid ramen- Tried it for the first time and I thought the broths were great for $15 per bowl. The black garlic tonkatsu broth is probably one of the better ones I've tried, and the spicy miso broth was so good my son decided to eat mine instead of his own tokatsu broth (which was also very good in my opinion). Unfortunately I ordered to go so the broths needed some reheating but it was still good nonetheless. Also because it was to go, I felt like it could use extra broth. I generally like my ramen bowls with lots of broth but this was a little shy, hence the reduction of the star (keeping reading to see why it is now a 5 star). Another thing to add is that their small plates are quite small. I ordered the chicken karaage to try and flavor was not bad and with the sauce it was better for sure, but there were only 5 small pieces. The broth was mushroom based and was pretty flavorful. I didn't expect to enjoy these noodles as much as I did since I usually like thicker noodles but these were nice firm and chewy. The cost will definitely add up if you like to load your ramen with toppings. I'm not usually a fan of ramen places where you have to add all your toppings at an extra cost (and I'm still not) but I wanted to give this place a try for their appetizers! WOW, finally got a chance to check this place out after having them bookmarked or quite some time now. Just sucks that it was during COVID so we didnt get the full dine in experience I had hope for.... however, nonetheless we still ordered for pick up and the food was still just as a great and tasty! Gluten free ramen is available! Finally I can have ramen again! Since going gluten free a few years ago due to health reasons, I haven't been able to patronize any ramen establishments, since the noodles are obviously made of wheat. However, I was intrigued by Sojo originally because of their Chashu Tacos, which I found on this here trusty website. However, as soon as I got situated at the bar, I was disappointed to find out that this item is no longer being served. Since I was already seated, I decided to peruse over the menu hoping that there was something else I could eat. Much to my surprise (and delight), ramen can be made with a variety of different noodles, two of which are gluten free (rice or tofu)! Yes, purists will be quick to remind me that this substitution would no longer qualify the item as "ramen," but for someone with sensitivity, it's my best bet! The best thing is that if you are going for low carb or keto, tofu noodles will up the protein and decrease the carbs! I ended up ordering the Mala Shio base ($15), which according to the website, is the "Most Spicy Ramen on the Menu, with Pork & Chicken Base Soup, Pork Chashu, Bonito Flakes, Spicy Numbing Paste, Chili Oil, and Green Onion." In addition, I added Chashu Chicken (+$1.50), which I don't see often anywhere, plus the aforementioned Tofu Noodles (+$2). For a side dish, I also tacked on some Chicken Karaage ($6) for good measure. To be honest, I am beyond pleased that a Japanese restaurant actually goes out of its way to cater to the gluten free crowd, as the menu actually labels which items are safe for consumption for those who are intolerant. Of course, more holistic/hipster American joints have been doing this for years, but it is EXTREMELY RARE for any type of East Asian establishment to follow suit. For this alone, I give them extra brownie points. A calorie count next? Haha... now that would be just asking too much! As far as the taste goes? It's actually pretty darn good! The tofu noodles have a satisfying crunch to them, and are similar to the cold, thin, Taiwanese style tofu strips. I wasn't sure initially how well they would blend in with the soup base and ingredients, but I really could not have asked for more. The mala sauce has the ideal amount of spicy kick without being overwhelming. The only slight downside is that the meat doesn't have a ton of flavor, but that's certainly no deal breaker. Chicken Karaage comes with four ample sized pieces, with not too much batter and a decent amount of juiciness. I would definitely order all of these items again, although I'd likely want to sample some of the other offerings during my next visit. Service is friendly, and environs are comfortable. This location has been the site of a plethora of failed past businesses, so hopefully Sobo can ultimately bring some much needed stability. Now, the main caveat here is that this is obviously NOT an authentic Japanese ramen spot, as you probably have noticed, so keep this in mind if that is a prerequisite for you. Came here on a Tuesday for lunch at around 11:30am and there were a lot of seats open. Each table has a QR code which you scan and then place your order on your phone which is convenient since we didn't have to wait for someone to take our order. I ordered the veggie ramen ($12.50) since the other ramen dishes seemed lacking in toppings according to the descriptions. There are three broths you can choose and I went with the spicy garlic shoyu. You can also choose regular, thin, and rice noodle for no extra cost, which was nice, but the tofu noodles are an extra $2. I liked how there's a "less salt" option, which I went with. I also included the home made chili oil which was quite spicy in my opinion (but that's cuz I can't really handle spice, oops, so I don't recommend adding that if you have a low spice tolerance level lol). The ramen was pretty filling since there were quite a lot of toppings for this specific ramen. We also got the edamame ($3) and chicken karaage ($4) since it was happy hour. The edamame were sprinkled with salt and served with sweet chili sauce which I've never tried before, so it was an interesting, but delicious combo to try. The chicken karaage would've been better if it was crispier; I don't think they double fried it. But I notice the ramen was so small, it had couple pieces of Very Fatty porks , with very small portion noodle . The soup base was just average but it just full of spicy flavor , and I did not know why the soup was kind of unreasonable thick , humm interesting . Great selection. I appreciate that they have 3 veggie broths. It was really easy to order even though there were a lot of options. We ended up getting two side dishes and a ramen. Any additional Topping is extra with the ramen so I would tread lightly lol the ramen was really good though. You can choose to lessen the sodium intake and I think that helped a lot because usually I bloat like a puffer fish The appetizers were the highlight of the meal! I seriously loved the nasu miso. I'm always down for ramen places that serve other Japanese small plates since it keeps things more interesting! For the ramen, you customize your bowl on a sheet of paper. There's a bunch of different flavor bases to choose from (ie tonkotsu, sesame, curry etc). I found it kind of confusing since the bases on the menu are not listed the same way as on the sheet of paper. I pointed to the sesame ramen on the menu which was brownish in the picture, and was directed to check of black sesame as a base by the waitress. The other option that was labeled sesame, was called veggie sesame which didn't seem right since it was supposed to be pork based. Anyhow, I really didn't like the black sesame base which I feel like is better as a sweet dessert and not as much as a savory option. Anyways, I wish they would make their menu and paper ordering menu match up in terms of the options. You can get also get thin vs. regular noodles, and various add-ons. Also ordered a Minced Chasu Bowl for the kids which was a bit atypical. I normally expect pork chasu to yes, of course be small and minced, but at least tender and meaty. This chasu was kind of dry and flaky, and almost reminded me of pork floss/song. We all normally dig up minced pork bowls, but none of us liked this dry/flaky version I definitely enjoyed the small plates more. The Seared Garlic Salmon was spot on- tender, perfectly cooked and flavored. Nasu Miso (Japanese Eggplant) was also delicious. read more

**3.5 stars rounded to 4 stars** Quick and easy service with indoor dining in the Pacific Commons plaza. The employees follow stringent Covid-19 guidelines and it's easy to feel safe here when choosing to eat inside. The ramen base was ~$12.50-$13, but add ons for eggs, wood ear mushrooms, bamboo shoots, etc. will cost extra. We mostly ordered just the typical base, but I wish we had splurged a bit more to get the add-ons. The black garlic tonkotsu ramen was my favorite because the broth had a stronger flavor with that black garlic oil, but it wasn't as creamy as I would've expected. The mala shio ramen was missing that "mala" / numbing part of the description and the flavor was just okay. The ramen noodles were the perfect texture and while the pork chashu was good, it was a bit dry. I will say that the broth was on the saltier side and after eating, I was SO thirsty and needed lots of water. Overall, decent ramen for a decent price. Once you start including more add ons, I could definitely see it getting pretty expensive though. read more

Short Story: A small and cute place for ramen in Fremont! Long Story: We've been here a few times since they opened and had good experiences each time. We've gotten the tonkastsu ramen and chicken karage. You use a QR code to order and it is highly customizable. You can order extra noodles, soup, add-ons to your ramen, split the check, etc. There's usually little to no wait and the food comes out quite fast. The prices are really good for what you get! LUKEWARM DELIVERY Even though outdoor dining is available throughout most of the Bay Area there are times I will have food delivered. About two Saturday nights ago I ordered food to be delivered. When I placed the order it was about 30 minutes before closing. The items I ordered were Kim-Cheese Ramen, Mochiko Shrimp, and Pork Chasu Taco. The Kim-Cheese Ramen was particularly interesting because of the mozzarella cheese. The expectations when I order food to be delivered is that the hot items remain hot not lukewarm. I received the food about 30 minutes after closing time. For the Kim-Cheese Ramen the broth wasn't steaming inside the plastic container. When I poured the broth into the Kim-Cheese Ramen I noticed the mozzarella cheese wasn't melting. That would be like mozzarella cheese not melting when you pizza is cooked. When I took a bite of the ramen with the broth the combination was flavorful but the temperature was lukewarm. That might as well been a gazpacho, which is a cold tomato soup. However I didn't order a cold soup. The ramen was the biggest disappointment of the night, but the two other items weren't better. When I took a bite of the Pork Chasu Taco the best meat was cold and pasty. The Mochiko Shrimp had a flavorful marinade but the shrimp was cold. I love the ramen, a bit different but good. If you do not like to venture from the classic ramen, then do not get the black sesame broth. Broth was thick and creamy. You get three pieces of chasu, which is a plus. BUT you gotta pay extra for the egg. Basically their ramen is so basic, broth, noodles, green onions, and meat. No bean sprouts, seaweed, and other goodness you get from a regular ramen place. All loved all appetizers we ordered, especially the octopus (Ika Gemi)!
