I love this place! I crave it all the time! The teriyaki chicken has a wonderful marinade and a great charcoal crisp just-right for the chicken thighs. The Bang Shrimp is made with jumbo shrimp and the pulled pork is also awesome too. One big plate is enough to feed a person for a whole day. My husband and I have been going here for around 8 years, followed them in 3 different locations, and always try to catch their food truck when we're nearby. I hope they find a 'Solid' foundation to stay in; but then again restaurants can have a tough time these days... However, the food truck is ol'reliable. I was disappointed with the presentation of the food. I ordered a kahlua pork plate, and my food was placed in a single portion styrofoam container (pork, rice, macaroni salad). It felt like I ordered from a cafeteria, and the food was sitting in about 1/8" of oil. Quickly lost my appetite and probably won't return. read more

Sad to say today is their last day as a brick and mortar business as they are shifting to food truck and military base operations. The food is always excellent and the service is great. Today was my 1st time to the bar location and it's a cool spot. Please support them if you work at Davis Mothan or see them outside with their truck. The food truck can be found at every U of A home football game. Super friendly, family owned business. They have a smaller menu on the truck but everything I tried was delicious. We stumbled across this food truck at the U of A football game, at the ground level near Section 17. Our whole group got grilled teriyaki chicken with macaroni salad and rice. I subbed the rice for a second scoop of Mac salad, and it was the best Hawaiian Mac salad I've ever had! They also give you large portions. I had to share. I was also happy to see they had Spam musubi. It was pretty good! It's too bad they no longer have a restaurant and the food truck is only regularly on the Air Force base. read more

I have to say as someone that is absolutely obsessed with Hawaiian food, this meal was pretty sad :(. I had high hopes from a referral. Categories down below. Food: This meal was pretty soggy/tuff. Hard to explain but it didn't taste good and quite frankly I couldn't finish the meal as it didn't have much flavor as I continued to eat more of it. Temperature: The food was relatively luke warm, which again was pretty weird since most meals of this caliber come out hot and crunchy and none of that existed. Atmosphere: Felt warm and inviting and the staff were nice, so no complaints at all. Value: Expensive in my opinion and not a lot of quantity as you can see in the picture. Definitely can get more food elsewhere for the price you pay here in comparison to other foods in the same category. Recommendation: I may have to try this place again some time but it's hard for me to say it's a good option. if your in the mood for Hawaiian food, right now I'd say try it out at your own risk. read more

I haven't been to Solid Grindz since 2018. They were located on Craycroft then. I had a bad experience, after having dined there many times, and just hadn't had an opportunity to go back until yesterday. Oh, I'm glad I did! I had the Teriyaki Chicken, which was perfectly moist with a nice char that imparted a wonderful bite to the chicken. The sauce was served on the side, which I love because I don't want my chicken swimming in teriyaki sauce. I didn't have rice or macaroni salad as I don't eat either anymore, but my friend who ordered the Bang Bang Shrimp (which she LOVED!) said both were very good! I love most things Hawaiian and was very excited to learn about Solid Grindz when I moved here two years ago. I tried the big kalbi and bang shrimp plate. The kalbi was overcooked, but that shrimp was delicious - crispy, creamy, a little sweet. The mac salad was spot on with the creaminess and seasonings - not soupy or anything! I didn't know what to expect with the beans, but they had the standard bacon/smoked flavor; I paired this with my kalbi and rice and it was almost the perfect bite, maybe I could have used a little bit of kimchi, but it's not like I didn't enjoy my lunch. SG is located very close to the Air Force base and it gets packed fast. The parking lot is a complete cluster, and small, so be careful when you pull in, there's just a bit of wiggle room. The dining room is small/medium sized due to its location in a tiny strip mall. Orders get cooked fast, so you're not waiting too long whether you're dining in or take-out. read more

I got the garlic shrimp and kalbi and both were really good. I would've appreciated more sauce on the shrimp so it covered each shrimp but the sauce was so good. Thought I'd give it another try at the new location. Went today ordered spam fried rice, loco moco special, mochiko chicken, poke and spam Musubi. Spam Musubi was kind nostalgic 7-11 Hawaii experience, premade and held in a warmer behind the counter. Was okay. The main portions were huge and added value. Loco moco, poke and fried rice were all descents. Prices were decent for the amount of food we received. Mochiko chicken needs a lot of work. IYKYK. It seemed more corn starch flour than marinated with mochiko flour. Grainy and no real marinade on the meat. Mochiko chicken has a very distinct texture, almost chewy on the outside and always has marinade in the meat and batter. It was coated in some spicy mango sauce. We don't do that in Hawaii. It's not a thing. It wasn't bad, just not what can be expected. This one seamed dusted and fried to order. Hopefully this review is viewed as constructive and not critical as to better the expectations we have coming in. This said, we are in Tucson and I bet a lot of the "adjustments" are made to cater to the masses and not Hawaii people. Service there was friendly and music vibe made me feel like I was home. Maybe I chose the wrong dishes to try but one willing to give it another chance, again. Was visiting base and saw the food truck, lived in Ewa Beach for years & miss our Hawaiian Barbecue Spots. Glad we tried this one as it took us back to some of our best stomach memories of Hawaii Life. The food was delicious, hot and plenty of it for the $$$. Both me & my wife enjoyed our plates and left the BX full & satisfied. All the meats were cooked just right with the flavor we was hoping for & miss. I ordered a mix plate (grilled teriyaki chicken & Mochiko chicken (spicy mango sauce)) w/2 macs, a kalbi & bang shrimp plate w/2 macs, a Masubi, and some drinks. The mac salad was pretty good, almost as flavorful and good as my favorite spot back home. Teriyaki chicken was good, but the portion seemed a little small compared to the rest. Absolutely the premier place in Tucson to go for Polynesian Food. Mama's is pure garbage for authenticity and L&L is way too expensive for their portion size. Big portions, the best Mac Salad and all their cooks are Polynesian not Haoles. Try the Kalua Pork because they know how to make it authentic Hawaiian style with steamed cabbage. The Chicken Katsu is also a big favorite. It's located inside a bar at 6255 E. Golf Links but there's easy in and out access. The only downside is they close at 3:30 pm read more

Our city is so lucky to have a quality Hawaiian restaurant: Solid Grindz. I ordered some poke and an island plate lunch with kalbi ribs and macaroni salad. Honestly, it was the best meal I've had in a long time. The kalbi ribs were cooked perfectly with superb seasoning. I order these ribs frequently at Korean restaurants, but Solid Grindz's recipe stands out on top. The poke was also well-marinated and tasted delicious. Not bad but not bomb. I've tried their kalbi and bang shrimp plate with mac salad. The mac salad had too much mayo and was bland. The bang shrimp was the best thing on my plate. Crispy fried shrimp with bang sauce drizzled on top. The kalbi was good but inconsistent. Half of my meat was marinated and the other half had none of the marinade and tasted like plain grilled beef. I'd eat here again and probably try the katsu but for now, nothing to rave about. read more

The place is large casual. 2 TVs You order at the counter and your food is brought to you. We had the kahlua pulled pork, teriyaki chicken, bang shrimp with tuna Mac, rice and island beans. The meats were so tender and flavorful. The shrimp panko breaded and very tasty. The island beans are sweet baked beans. I don't usually like macaroni salad. But the tuna mac was surprisingly good. A hint of tuna, savory. Good. The staff was friendly. The redemption of the voucher flawless. Only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is tables weren't cleaned and the music is way loud. Tucson's little desert oasis for authentic Hawaiian food. Hawaiian food is an important part of Polynesian culture with its rich, diverse, infused flavors they've adopted for centuries and Solid Grindz was able to capture that in their menu. I am only rating this a 4 because their mac salad was good (missing that yum-yum factor) and they did not have in stock Hawaii Sun Lilikoi Passion (best flavor). Overall still one of my favorite places to eat in Tucson and would highly recommend to family, friends and visitors. read more
