SOMISOMI was definitely a treat and a new delicious learning experience! I didn't know what to expect, and I was clueless on the different options that were listed on the Yelp Event Details email. It was like learning a new language: Ah-Boong and Taiyaki were not in my vocabulary. The counter person was very patient and helpful in explaining the options, flavors and fillings. I asked for the soft serve and fillings with the least sugar. There were so many choices of soft serve: Nutella Custard, Red Bean, Matcha Custard and Black Sesame. I ended up ordering the Matcha soft serve with red bean filling. She recommended the waffle to be placed on top of the soft serve, as it would be less messy. I followed her advice. It was fun to watch the waffles being made. A previous satisfied customer said they were so good when newly made and warm. I was getting excited with anticipation. After the other person assembled Ah-Boong behind the counter, there was a large choice of toppings: Biscoff Crumble, Oreo Crumbs, Macaron, Captain Crunch, Cocoa Pebbles, Rainbow Sprinkles, Matcha Powder, Strawberry Coconut Flakes, and Graham Cracker Crumbs I chose Matcha powder and coconut flakes. (Again, I chose the toppings with the least sugar.) They added nicely to the Matcha soft serve! For the Taiyaki, I chose the cheese filling on advisement for its less sugar content. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was the modern looking interior and large plant in the center. The space is well lit with amphitheatre style seating, what a unique concept! There was a long line on a weekday night, it looks like a lot of folks came in to grab some post dinner dessert. YUM. A dang good experience all around. You'd wonder if the location of real estate will pass the rest of time, but I sure do hope Somi Somi does. I'm excited for the Link neighborhood to have a solid soft serve and, even better, taiyaki! My first time trying out Somisomi Soft Serve and Taiyaki and it was SO good. It is a spacious location in N. Austin at the Linc with plenty of parking. The store is whimsical and modern and bright. There are lots of yummy rich soft-serve flavors to pick from -- such as Milk, Chocolate, Ube, Matcha, Cookies and Cream and they just added Banana Milk which is what I selected. It tasted so fresh and natural. For my toppings I had coconut flakes and it is served in their signature goldfish-shaped waffle cone. So cute and delicious too. Perfect for the whole family. Is is not overly sweet and the portions are quite large. And next to try the Taiyaki, a crispy fish shaped pastry filled with your choice of filling. I selected custard. Other fillings are Nutella, Oreo's Cheddar and Black Sesame. Taiyaki is usually served warm and believe me It is melt in your mouth good. I definitely recommend this Somisomi for all. Entering the business it has a contemporary feeling. The place is very clean. Tables and benches are natural wood looking. It's definitely a place for younger people since the older population would have difficulties sitting on the wooden benches some with no back support but the younger generation will love the different ambience The server was very nice explaining all the different menu items. The space is a beautiful, minimalist and modern. The volume from various conversations tend to bounce off the walls which can be a bit sharp to the ears depending how many people settled in enjoying their treats. I was impressed with the efficency and professionalism of the 2 counter staff during our visit. My husband and I had ahboong during a long visit in Los Angeles about 2 years ago and beyond happy it is here in Austin. We ordered a custard and red bean taiyaki and 2 upside ahboong. Recently got an ahboong and Oreo taiyaki at Somisomi and both were absolutely delicious! The soft serve was super creamy and satisfying to eat, and made a great contrast with the super crispy ahboong. Service was friendly and helpful and the place is super cute inside. The only downside was the ambient volume was uncomfortably loud despite stopping in on a weekday evening when it wasn't all that busy. It was hard to hear my name called over the loud speaker, and it was so loud I couldn't stay inside to eat. It would be great if they end up hanging some of the noise dampening panels to help with the noise and echo. read more

What a nice, calm and clean space! We came in for a Yelp Elite event within the first hour of opening on Monday to only a couple of people there. We absolutely love the design of the space. It was pretty chilly inside while we ate our treats but that didn't affect how yummy everything we had was! So I was not expecting much but everything was very tasty. Good taiyaki with yummy custard and red beans feelings. The fish are reasonable serving sized (Asian sized haha) and not overly sweet. The soft serve I tried was matcha cookies and cream - very yummy matcha flavors. Super smooth texture and I like that they have some toppings. I love Somisomi! Somisomi specializes in taiyaki - a nice warm (fish-shaped and designed) pancake filled with custard (or red bean) then topped with a wonderful swirl of milk/ube flavored soft serve! The inside of the business is very spacious and clean, as were there restrooms. Employees were nice and offered their recommendations if you come in indecisive on what to get. I loved the ice cream at this place! I wish I knew more about what I was ordering, and the girl helping me had on a face mask and was speaking very quietly, so it was really hard to hear her. But she pointed to what I could order as part of the Yelp event, so I just took a stab in the dark. I ordered the regularAnboong, because I did not understand what an upside down anboong was. But I should've gotten the upside down one! The ice cream is by far the best thing they have - I got the ube - so good! But if you get it like I did in the upside down fish waffle cone, it gets really messy. You can also choose a filling, so I just said Nutella and that's what was in the bottom of the cone. The little strawberry cookie they set on top was also very tasty. It was very messy toward the end and that's why if you got the upside down one in the cup, I think that would be a much better idea! Along with that, I could order a taiyaki, which is basically a toasty waffle with filling. I got mine filled with custard. It was good, but the ice cream was better. They are located in the strip center between pluckers and Easy Tiger, right by I 35 and Highway 290. It's easy in and out and there's plenty of parking. Lovely spot for ice cream and to hang out in general! I came on a Saturday afternoon and there was only a few people inside. You can order soft serve, tayaki or a soft serve with a tayaki. My entire family loves it here. I knew my 2 eldest daughters wouldn't be able to finish one each of their own so I had them share a cookies and cream upside down ahboong and they truly loved it, especially with a nutella filled ahboong! I tried the ube and matcha swirl soft serve the first time we came for a visit and tonight I tried the ube on its own with an ahboong. The fresh strawberry milk is also so tasty, and made with REAL fruit! Although I've had the somi somi in San Diego and in Pleasanton both in California, I remember the ube being a much richer purple color and stronger ube flavor, this one is a creamy but slight ube tasting flavor. Came here on a Sunday. There was no line when I arrived, but a few minutes after, the line was almost out the door. It can be a bit of a wait if they are busy, so keep that in mind. Just take a seat, and hopefully, you can hear your name being called out. I got the milk and salted caramel soft serve in a cup. I really wish they had different sizes for a cup. It is a lot of soft serve in my opinion, but I have seen people finish it before, so it all depends on you. The milk and salted caramel didn't disappoint. The salted caramel definitely had a salted kick to it, but the milk helped it out. As for the store, I feel like they ran out of money because the decor and all the empty sizes are a bit weird compared to other locations that I have been to. It looked like they had enough money for one side of the store, and that's it. The parking situation, I hate this parking lot. Not their fault, but the parking spaces here are SMALL. I work super close, just a quick walk from here. In fact, when I'm at the office I like to take walks to stretch my legs. My walks often bring me to The Linc where this is located. They've even got a section of amphitheater-style seating. Very much feels like it's a spot in Seoul or Taiwan. Amazing. Great service too. The treat... the best!! I got the Ah Boong upside down (in a cup). Salted caramel ice cream with custard (inside the Taiyaki) and topped with Biscoff crumbles and Cocoa Pebbles. I'm not usually a dessert person nor do I like anything cold unless it's a hot day, but for SomiSomi, I make the exception every time. I had Somi Somi soft serve many moons ago when I visited other spots in the US where this place had already made its mark in Asian based sweet treats and very much enjoyed the same resulting experience from the grand opening. The line was out the door and the wait took a bit, our ahboon came out very quickly but the complimentary taiyakis that were supposed to come with did not show and I had to reapproach the counter after 15 mins of waiting and seeing so many parties after us getting their orders. I'm not sure why this happened but it was a little frustrating with the huge crowds and waiting for a while seeing what happened and how quickly they can assemble the desserts. I will admit that I fell for the TikTok and Instagram hype about this place. I really want to love it, but I did not. The wait was long, and my order came out wrong. They did correct it after trying to argue with me that it was correct. The biggest issue for me is that I just did not like the texture of it. I have loved SOMISOMI since having it in LA like ten years ago. It would always be a special treat since I have never lived in a place where there's been a location. That changed today with the opening of its North Austin location at The Linc shopping complex. It can be hard to find at first but it is located right next to the FedEx bordering Frontage Road. The space itself is huge. I'm used to just a space with no seating inside but this one has various seating options with room for a lot more. They promoted opening day with a gift for the first 100 customers, which was just a yellow tote bag, pen, and magnetic clip. The even better opening weekend promotion (4/10-4/12) however is a free Taiyaki with the purchase of an Ah-Boong (soft serve + taiyaki). The bonus taiyaki is a surprise flavor but you can likely choose if you have a food allergy. The special opening soft serve flavor is Peach. All current flavors, with swirls available for each set of two: Cookies and Cream Peach Matcha Ube Milk Sakura Berry Flavors and swirls change weekly but you can check their Instagram for the current offerings. If you've never been here, you have a few customization options. Filling options include Black Sesame, Matcha Custard, Nutella, Custard, and Red Bean. Topping options include Macaron, sprinkles, and various cereal and crumbles. My go-to order is usually an upside down ah-boong (served in a cup), a Matcha / Ube / Black Sesame soft serve base + swirl, red bean filling, with just some fruity pebbles for toppings. Today was my first day trying the Milk and Sakura Berry swirl flavors and I really liked it. You can really taste that distinct sakura flavor. The taiyaki are not to be skipped. I like taking a few of these home to enjoy throughout the week. It's also cheaper to order 5. These have the same filling options as the ah-boongs, but also include Cheese, Oreo, and Dubai Chocolate which costs more. They also have Somi Sips that have various flavored milks and coffee. In terms of opening day demand, they streamlined very well with making a lot of the taiyaki cones before ordering. Choose a filling inside the cone, then flavor of soft serve, and after you order you can choose from an array of other sprinkled toppings like biscoff, cereal, crunchy coconut. I love getting the nutella or custard filling in the cone, it makes it so creamy. They have a rotating flavor and some mixed options for the soft serve, plus a coffee float or matcha.
