I've been sitting in the drive thru for more than 10 minutes waiting for someone to take my order. Multiple people were having this same issue. It's a long time coming for this review, Sonics food is one of the worst in the fast food business, the only thing they have going for them is their drinks and they still get that wrong more then half of the time. Now learn from my mistakes, DONT USE THE SONIC APP! They lie, it says anytime is happy hour on the app but ITS NOT! They up the prices so it looks like you are getting it for half off but if you go 2-4 for the real happy hour it's a whole lot cheaper. I thought I was going crazy when the prices always fluctuated when all I get is the same thing every time, I started saving my receipts after I got no where asking the people that work here, they kept saying no this is the price for happy hour and I was wrong! Now I only go 2-4 for the real happy hour. Also I always have a problem when they give me the strawberry slush, it's WHITE ice half of the time! I asked them if it's strawberry and if it's supposed to look like that and the lady said yeah which is super odd because sometimes it's bright red, I posted the picture of the 'white' strawberry slush because its so inconsistent all the time. read more

Food: 4.5/5 Service and Setting: 3/5 Value: 3/5 Are there any San Diego locals who remember the mid-2000s when they would blast Sonic commercials all the time with no Sonics to be found for miles? I have carried that resentment with me for many years. Though I have tried Sonic at this location a handful of times, I've never taken the time to write a proper review. While I cannot speak about the interior of the restaurant, the service I have received in the drive-in parking spot has been good. On some days, it has been admittedly slow, but not as bad as a busy drive-thru. The drive-in parking spots are nice and wide as well as angled, so even the worst drivers can park here with ease. The servers have all been very nice and seemed happy while bringing out the food. I've always ordered through the app to make sure that I was able to use any coupons or promotions going on and that has been very smooth as well. Chili Cheese Fries: 4/5 Not much to say about this guy. The fries were cooked perfectly, rivaling McDonald's on their best days, with fresh-tasting chili and mild cheese. I want to say that their chili tastes a little less muted and flavorful than Wienerschnitzel and the overall quality is better. It was honestly a home run. Footlong Quarter Pound Coney: 5/5 Maybe my cravings were too powerful, but dang, this chili cheese dog hit like no other. I am very very very particular about hotdogs. I do not like them grilled, too salty, too mushy, etc I especially do not like Costco hotdogs (I am prepared to die on this hill). Sonic did an amazing job. The sausage itself was snappy, lightly smokey, not overly salty, and had a mellow flavor. The chili and cheese were also mild but enhanced the savory flavor of the hot dog. This tastes like a step up from Wienerschnitzel in terms of quality and taste. I will be back for this glizzy without shame. Pickle Fries: 2.5/5 These were probably the least delicious thing I ate today at Sonic. Straight out of the bag, there was a very strong pickle smell. The shapes ranged from little nubs to more generous strands. Overall, it was a very simply dredged and fried pickle, very similar to fried zucchini that you can get from other restaurants. The most disappointing part was that they were extremely soggy, even straight out of the fryer. I don't think it is worth giving this a try. Soft Pretzel Twist: 4/5 Soft pretzels are delicious, but are they more delicious once fried? Sort of. This deep-fried pretzel has the aroma of a freshly baked pastry with the savory crust of a fried item. It was gently salted and had a warm pillowy center. While I did enjoy it, I felt that the oil took away from the experience of enjoying it as a pretzel. This is a convoluted way of saying that I would prefer a freshly baked pretzel over a fried one, but this was good. It comes with cheese sauce that was a little too funky and oddly sour that I personally did not enjoy. Make sure to eat this quick! As soon as it cools down, it begins to turn into a rock. Pickle Juice Slush: 4.5/5 Seeing this on TikTok, I knew that I had to grab it before they took it away. With its nuclear green color looking like it would melt its styrofoam container, this pickle juice slush hit hard. The taste of kosher pickle was strong without the spices. Vinegar and the aroma of pickled cucumbers smack your taste buds while notes of dill and other pickling spices linger very faintly in the back. The drink is sweet and definitely reads as a dessert while also having a considerable amount of salt, almost like a Gatorade on steroids. With all of that said, I found the drink by itself to be a little too sweet, sour, and salty, but drinking it after a bite of food was amazing. Cold and refreshing, it helps reset your palate while enhancing your hotdog, fried goodies, or burger. This is the condiment I never knew I needed and I hope that they keep it on forever. If you like pickles or even if you can tolerate them, I would definitely recommend. Also, a medium is more than enough. read more

Worst fast food place ever! Takes 20 minutes to get one thing with no other costumers. Avoid at all costs

Thought we would try them again tonight. Went through the drive up and the person taking our order was extremely rude. Plus the the drive up was very slow considering there was only two cars in front of us. We ordered chili dogs, fry's, and the new buffalo chicken dippers. The buns on the chili dogs were hard and they were lacking chili. We were offered no dips or sauces for the dippers. No utensils and only two napkins. WTH! OMG! Leaving one star is being generous but, I can't go any lower! The food was so cold I got two burgers and the cheese wasn't even melted so I had to heat it up in the microwave. Rude customer service. I'm a fan! Sonic is similar to a drive-in theater. You can drive to one of the booths and sit in your car and eat (order by pressing the red button), or you can go through the drive-thru. I came here tonight to grab a late dinner and ordered ahead online. It was Monday night, but it only took 5 minutes for the order to come! I had weird specifications i.e. 6 packs of honey mustard, a cherry splash in my Diet Coke, less ice, etc. To my surprise, my complicated order was completely correct! Sorry for the order, Sonic. I was anticipating in eating some fried pickles here at Sonics Drive in located in Kerney Mesa. I was given the awesome customer service at the drive thru like usual, but was disappointed in the fried Pickles. I enjoyed the sourness fragrance it gave in my car , but the overall taste was not as good. Maybe it needs a dipping sauce with it. I asked for some, but only had ranch dressing. I like the old school fill of this place ordering in the drive up space like you are at a drive in theater lol and I like how they bring your order to you and they are on roller skates. I have no complaints, the food and drinks were good. They don't have a Sonic near me so it was a cool experience. I wish I could give them a zero, but that's not possible so I give a 1. I've ordered delivery from this specific location twice and both times, they have screwed up my simple order. I get a chocolate oreo master shake with fudge and the first time it came swimming in peanut butter, which is an allergy hazard and could've killed me, had i had the misfortune of being allergic to peanut butter. I used to love the buffalo wings here before, i was sad they changed to popcorn chicken nonetheless i ordered them. They were so sad! Barely had any sauce on them, I kept shaking the container to see if i could spread the sauce and I couldn't. They might have as well been dry. You can drive your lazy hungover fast-food craving petootie right up to a fancy light-up menu and some bright and cheery voice will come out of this speaker asking you what they can bring them to your car on rollerskates. That, to me, is one of my top reasons for coming here is to watch the skillful dancing of Sonic employees on 8-wheels. The commercials are awful (in my humble opinion) but the selection is fantastic. There is a wide variety of sugar & saltiness and other empty-caloried delicacies to stuff your face with when you roll up all hung over after a wild night in PB. I was the last person they helped for the evening, with nobody else in line. one would think, getting an order that only has a single drink when there was only one customer would be easy but, nope, not here. I ordered a Route 44 dragon fruit Red Bull recharger with Nerds (yes, I have the dietary habits of a 10 year old, but that is besides the point. ) I made the mistake of assuming that a dive drink order was done correctly and did not check it until I was back at work. a mile away. Well, no ice to be found in the drink so, it was tepid. .Also the additional candy that I paid for was not to be found. Okay, their long awaited indoor dining room renovation is finally complete. I don't understand what took so long, the inside is just a paInted cube with a couple of mounted tvs and stand-alone tables/chairs. No booths or anything. I could have done that reno quicker & probably cheaper myself, but I digress. The ordering is a bit funky in that you're not face-2-face with a person and instead talking into a speaker like you would at the drive-thru but that's their model & not a showstopper by any means. Food came out with a smile & wasn't bad at all but let's be honest, the food is just a vehicle for what we're really there for...the shakes. Those are really good. Out of all the fast food restaurants, Sonics has the best beverages. I absolutely love their Jolly Rancher slushy with Pop Rock candy in it. I can't wait for them to come to Hawaii, which I believe will be in 2018. Their real ice cream hand crafted shakes are great and so is their cherry limeade slushy. Their food is above average. Their onion rings are one of the best. Their fries are super crispy. The burger and chicken strips are on par with other fast food chains. I get a kick out of seeing the workers in their roller skates. I don't see it at all in Hawaii. I would get fired so fast from this place because I would be dropping all the orders, haha. read more

As someone who doesn't live anywhere near a Sonic, the idea of Sonic is quite appealing. I constantly see their commercials on TV, and the actors really sell me on the shakes and food. So, of course, my boyfriend and I knew we had to sneak in a Sonic trip during our stay in San Diego. We'd visited one on the way to Vegas before and, boy, did we goof up by ordering the most basic drinks and fries. Don't get me wrong -- the Cherry Limeade is delish, but hellooooooo, Sonic shakes are unbeatable. Hands down, Sonic has the best shakes out of all the fast food eateries I know of. You really can't go wrong with whatever you order. I love the whole "drive-in" concept with the servers on skates. I personally can't skate at all, so seeing the servers zip around so effortlessly is inspiring. I've never seen a wipe-out at a Sonic, and I can imagine it doesn't happen often... I hope the roller skates never go away. One note, though -- the prices. I get that we came around 11am and not during one of their discounted times, but $3+ for a small bag of tater tots/fries and $6+ for a shake... A little steep. Still, everything is quite tasty and of good quality. Once we get the hang of Sonic, we'll have to come during a good deal and splurge. read more

This location is right off the freeway. The drive-through is very spacious and can accommodate a lot of cars without causing an inconvenience to people parked in the carports. Carport service was really easy and fast. I've elected to use the Sonic app a few times but I've always run into issues and just prefer to press the call button for intercom drive-in service. The food was piping hot when it got to us. The soft pretzel was absolutely incredible considering it's only two dollars. But cheese sauce was warm and perfect for dipping. I took advantage of Sonic's Car Hop special for $3 and some change which consisted of a regular cheese burger and hand made onions. It's a very good deal and I ate in, not in my car. I asked for the cheeseburger to be prepared with no mayo and ketchup but mustard was okay. It was a good cheese burger for case and purposes. The beef patty was moist and tasty and fitted well up to the edges of the moist warm bun. The lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles were crisp and fresh, and the cheese was a good size and tasted good. All in all I thought it was a good burger for a fast food eatery. On the other hand, I could not get over the sweetness of the onions, and I am not talking about the onions inside, I am talking about the batter itself. They add sugar to it and to this day, I can not understand why. Since when are onions suppose to be sweet? And taste like dessert? I say remove that sugar, everyone knows there is already enough in our diets, and a more savory or perhaps something with a little kick. How about a nice sea salt? In a nut shell, they were to sweet and did not balance well with the burger. Service was nice at the counter. We stop here every once in a while. Service here is below average compared to other Sonic locations. My son wanted me to stop and get him some food the other night. It was about 8:30pm. I was behind one car forever in the drive thru. Finally an employee came out with a piece of cardboard and took the order from the car in front of me. Then she went in and put their order in. After a few minutes she came out to my car to take my order on the same piece of cardboard. She then told me that the speaker isn't working. Ok, I then waited and waited for the car in front of me to get their order. And finally, I made it to the window. I waited for about 5 more minutes before they handed me part of my order. The line behind me was huge. At that point, I did notice that the drive thru window was filthy. That didn't make me feel good about the cleanliness of the rest of the restaurant. I finally got my chicken tender box and drove off. When I got home, I realized that the chicken tenders were burnt. I also didn't receive the bbq sauce, ketchup, napkins, or a mint. Highly disappointed with this Sonic location and I'm pretty sure management must not care at all. I do love their commercials though. read more
