I love the restoration's new look. The Black and Raw-looking woodwork pops. Moving the bar is questionable, yet it opens the area. Also, I believe the sides (coleslaw and corn) in their individual plates are larger amounts. The various meat items are still delicious. I enjoyed the meal and the new look. read more

If there is a host, they were nonexistent... for the parking lot to be empty, they sure took a good a while for them to seat me and one other person that was ahead of me.. had multiple people pass by and ignore us.. not off to a good start whatsoever. I've given up for Sonny's at this location for take out. We frequently stop here on our way home from church to pickup take out. The last 3 out of 4 times they either got our order wrong or failed to include items we ordered. It's frustrating getting home only to find out your order is wrong. foods good (I love the mix plate with a lil bit of everything), server was polite and attentive, the one star down was the adult beverage. I'm a light weight (and that is understating how much a wuss I am) so one drink mixed normally will give me a nice buzz but I felt barely a thing it was my birthday and we all know how expensive those drinks get so I was underwhelmed and not about to fork out for another when at other restaurants it's not needed. I haven't been to Sonny's since the pandemic began over a year ago. Last month I went for the first time since then and went through the drive-thru (at the Pensacola, FL 9th Ave. location). Three employees were not wearing masks. I left before completing the order. Last night I gave them another chance through the drive-thru and there were two cooks not wearing masks and the manager pulled her mask under her chin every time she spoke to an employee. To have anyone working in a restaurant not wearing a mask during a pandemic is dangerous and stupid. I will not return to a business that doesn't have enough respect for its employees and customers to better protect them. There are plenty of places that do. read more

Visiting Pensacola and tried Sonnys . A little disappointed in the wings and the ribs . The ribs were dry and the wings didn't even resemble a chicken wing . Wings were over cooked as well . Ordered the salad and observed Every one else being served a salad prepped like the picture on the menu , when we received ours it was one big jumbled tossed salad , yes I'm sure it taste the same it just left us wondering if they were just in a hurry prepping it or just didn't care . Nice to see an establishment follow up to try and correct a not so delightful experience. Ian the manager of Sonny's contacted me and offered an apology and explained that they aim to please. He ask us to come back and give them another chance . We did and they didn't disappoint this time. The food was really good , cooked just right and the service was superior from our waitress (Dremi). First time at this chain. I've seen them all over the south and had to check them out. I was a little skeptical since I can be picky about bbq....but I was starving and it was close. I ordered the smoking gun - jalapeno cheddar sausage, brisket, banana peppers and onions with a side of mac and cheese. It was a solid sandwich, the brisket was tender and had a good charr. I didn't love the sauces they had, they are tomato based and some were a bit sweet. Overall it was a good meal, just not my bbq style. My friends and I decided to stop into Sonny's for an early dinner. Service started off rocky as the dinner rush started to come in 30 minutes after we arrived. We ordered our food and I ordered a beverage since it was included in my combo upgrade. 20 minutes had passed and I still hadn't received my beverage. When I tried to politely ask the server (Elisha) to grab my beverage she put her finger up and said one minute and ran off. She eventually returned after 7 more minutes, this time with the beverage and stated that she was busy and it was her 3rd day, which I kindly said, "no worries, I understand, thank you". (As I have been a server and manager on the beach for many years). After 45 minutes, portions of our food arrived, in which the server said the rest would come later. The rest did come... but almost at the end of the meal. The server (Elisha) then brought our check and shortly after she came back to collect the check. I asked if she could split the bill into separate checks. She cocked her head and aggressively said, "Well you should have told me that!" I apologized and said, "I'm sorry, you didn't ask how the bill was so I just wanted to ask if you could bring separate bills". At that point she bent over and said, "Well I'm not going to just assume!!" and snatched the bill out of my hand and marched away. I am very forgiving when servers are weeded, especially being new. However, this instance rubbed me the wrong way when she chose to get aggressively rude instead of handling the situation with integrity. read more

Absolutely nothing wrong with this BBQ. My wife would rate it five stars easily and I liked it just fine. We had takeout and I liked the wings with the perfect amount of spice and the baked beans are amazing. The brisket and pork were a bit dry to my liking and I'm not a fan of leaving he silverskin on ribs but my wife and four year old daughter had no complaints at all. The BBQ is inexpensive and tasty; I can definitely see how they get repeat business. I think with some there's nostalgia seasoning everything a touch more so maybe that's why this doesn't feel to me like the "best ever" I've been assured it is. I'll gladly return if I pass by on a road trip but I wouldn't go out of my way to get some fast food BBQ. That's okay though: My wife does the driving and she WILL, even if just for some of those delicious beans. read more

Pretty good experience as always. I usually order the Sonny's Sampler, but I'm on a light diet and opted for the Smoked Turkey with broccoli and a sweet potato. All good, but serving size was pretty small (compared to the usual fare, which is great) One comment, when we walked in, there was this obnoxious note sitting on the little hostess station thing. It was a long, all caps note warning that if the smoking area wasn't clean (By "TRENT STANDARDS"), employee meals would be taken away (" YOU CAN NOT BLAME ANYONE BUT YOURSELVES!"). Like, it's pretty pompous talking down to your staff via note in all caps, but right where customers can see when they walk in the door. TRENT STANDARDS are clearly all caps and talking down to people you work with, it's unclear what his cleanliness standards are. read more

I am writing in regards to the 9th Ave. location. They have always been great during dine-in....service, food, etc. Since Covid pandemic, I have ordered for pickup twice. Both times, I got home or back to work and found both orders wrong (some wrong items, cold, missing items). The first time, they were awesome about giving me a completely new order the next time I came in. The last order (yesterday) was wrong again with missing items. I called twice and was put on hold both times until I just hung up. I hate that this once great place is going down (smaller portions, not appearing to be as fresh, etc). Other people I've spoken to that frequent this location seem to agree. Come on guys, get it right and do not lose your customers. You get 3 stars and not less because you were once fantastic. Ok, update! Just posted the above review a few minutes ago (along with a note to their site) and received a call from Jeremy, the manager, 5 minutes later. He offered his disappointment in his staff, his personal apologies and asked me to please give them another chance and to ask for him next time I go in. Don't do a lot of reviews on chains like this, but this place has the potential to be a 5 star. This visit was probably just an off day for them. Severely understaffed so service was slow. Food took about 30 minutes to get to our table. But what can you do with an understaffed team? Severs and waitresses were amazing and did their best. Would've been nice to see management go around tables and just talk to the customers. But really, shout out to the staff that was there. read more

Last time I ordered a slab of ribs at the drive thru and when I made it home I had 6 ribs. The time that they have you waiting would make you think they have your order correct but no check out your order before you pull off. So disappointing I didn't go back and haven't been back since. So I'm gonna give them Zero Stars, but since Yelp doesn't give you that option I'm going to give them 1 Star. The food is very pricey and I expected to get what I paid for. Me, being the salad freak that I am, love their salad bar and the fact that it's well-priced. Hubby and I shared some bbq pulled chicken, which was divine and the waitress, also named Angela, got a huge smile on her face when we ordered it and say, "That's what I had for lunch," so we knew we were onto something good. When you walk in, it's like a trashier looking Golden Corral, and you're thinking, "how could that be trashier?" Well, it is a tad, and it's older, so whatever, it doesn't matter. The tables are dirty, the decor is disco-fabulous (meaning 70's era maybe early 80's, not John Travolta influenced) but you're going to get a satisfying meal here at a good price, so who cares? I've visited Sonny's for many years in different locations throughout the south. Sonny's is one of my favorites. The food was excellent and service terrific. I ordered the Memphis ribs with coleslaw and baked beans. I love the sweet BBQ sauce. My friend ordered all-you-can-eat Memphis ribs. When he finished those, he asked for 3-4 more. Being born and raised in the south we all know that BBQ is its own food group. I have been living in Pensacola for 2 years now and today I ventured out to do some errands around lunchtime. Have been wanting to try Sonny for awhile but just never got around to it. The pulled BBQ sandwich was full of smoked flavor, tender and full of meat not fat. But the best part of my meal was the fried okra. It was real cornmeal coated okra not the batter coated stuff every one else serves. I purchased the holiday Smoked Turkey Meal on Tuesday 12/23 and picked it up on the 24th of December, I chose this Sonny's because the Newest Sonny's in Milton Fl was out of their holiday meal. When the meal was loaded into my truck, the staff member put the containers on the back seat, not taking into consideration that the juice from the corn would leak all over my back seat....that has since been cleaned up. The menu for the meal in the advertisment stated the following: Smoked Turkey - feeds up to 9 people Cranberry Sauce Turkey Gravy the Sides were as follows: Mashed potatoes corn green beans banna pudding (extra fee) I was supposed to get instructions but did not, so i had to google reheating a smoked turkey. I was disappointed because tehre wasn't any cranberry sauce or turkey gravy. Fortunately I was able to make gravy for the mashed potatoes I will not be ordering the holiday meal from Sonny's in the future. If I order anything, it will be the turkey, as the turkey was good, almost tasted like smoked ham. read more

Not to sound like a BBQ snob but I was definitely not impressed. I had just landed in Pensacola and was starving for lunch when I drove past Sonny's and thought I'd give it a try. I ordered the chopped brisket sandwich with cole slaw and beans as my sides. First off, the bun was too big and dry. If I get a chopped beef sandwich I want taste the meat, not a huge bun. Second, the meat was very dry and tasteless. This was around noon, so they should have had "fresh" brisket to serve, not something that had sat under a heat lamp for hours.
