The BF and I have eaten here 2x's now. This is the cleanest diner I have been to. It is on the small side but it's deceptive because they also have a few additional tables in the back. I've noticed the counter gets snatched up fast, next visit I'm hoping to get a spot there. We've been lucky enough to not have to wait. The staff is nice. Our favorite waiter is the young man, I couldn't tell you his name, should have asked him. He stepped in to assist us since our waitress was MIA so we just snatched him as ours for the duration of our meal. We've driven past this corner diner countless times, really never thought to stop in because I'm not really big on diners. It was an article or a review that caught my eye to bookmark this place and try it. It was regarding the pancakes. They have 1 man on the grill who is throwing down. I mean he has got his game down. The bussers are also great, very attentive and prompt. We've tried the crispy pancakes which I absolutely love!!!! It's exactly how they describe it, house hot cakes, fried in butter for the crispy edges, yet light and fluffy in the middle. The waffle is equally as good. I asume it's the same batter they use for the pancakes. We always order on of the breakfast plates which comes w/ 2 eggs and a side of meat. We opt for the bacon which automatically comes crispy in 3 strips. The BF enjoys their hashbrowns, extra crispy. We tried the double cheese burger w/ bacon, it came with a side of fries. We requested the condiments on the side as well (lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles and mayo). We were impressed with the burger. We added one of my fried eggs on top, along with a tomatao and pickles and let me tell you.......Yuuuuummmmmmmm! The fries look like seasoned/battered fries but aren't. Spencer's has always been a staple when it comes to people I know coming in town for a while. It's got amazing food, I personally like the French toast for a simple but good breakfast. They have options for both lunch foods and breakfast food. Someone I know refuses to come in town and not have it before they leave. The service is almost always fantastic. the manager of the business, that I normally see there on the regular is very kind to everyone. I also love an amazing diner feel to it. it really adds amazing flare to its normally busy atmosphere. Eggs were cooked to perfection, covered in delicious chili served with the world's greatest hash browns. Spencer's can do no wrong. Atmosphere is 50's style yet clean and updated. Finally made it back to Spencers Grill. At 11am on a Saturday there was a short wait. Staff was super nice. They knew a lot of regulars. The coffee was good. The staff came by at least three times to refill. They have a neat Spencers mug that I almost bought! Got the #3. Two eggs scrambled. Sausage patties. Hash browns. Wheat toast. Added a full order or pancakes. The scrambled eggs were ok. It was more like an omelet. Nothing special but it was good. Next time I may go for over medium. The sausage patties were amazing. Some of the most flavorful patties I have had. Really tasty. I will get this everytime. The hash browns were my favorite item. They were crispy on the edges and so good. The texture was amazing. The wheat toast was amazing. Plenty of butter but not too much. It was crispy, and not burnt or dry. The pancakes were great. Crispy edges but not as crispy as last time. There is a lot of butter. They are thin. Definitely some of my favorite pancakes. There are about 12 counter seats and 6 booths. It's small but worth the wait (or try to go at offpeak times). read more

I was going to be in the area so I wanted to have breakfast and this place looked pretty cool so I went. The place looks like an old school greasy diner with some local history. When I walked in and used the men's room I knew I was in a cool place because the men's room was decorated old school with country charm, see my picture. The place was 50s style with the counters on the right and booths on the left with a back room that had tables and chairs. The place was full and people stood in line waiting to get in so that was a good sign. This is a total local hang out and the place to be for breakfast after watching all the neighborhood people socializing, some meeting every morning. St. Louis has this breakfast thing called the slinger and that is what I was after today. It's basically hash browns topped with a protein of choice, egg of choice, cheese,chili, raw onion and toast. I opted for two sunny eggs, sausage patties and a biscuit. The biscuit was very dense and dry so I didn't eat much of it but the slinger was outstanding. The crispy hash browns covered with sunny side eggs, sausage patties, cheese, chili and raw onions was super tasty and worked very well together and I'm glad to have tried it. Overall this is such a fantastic place to sample the St. Louis slinger at one very cool place, I'm so glad I picked this place. I haven't had a chance to try all their food. Went there the other day for breakfast. I had a simple fare, sausage, eggs, pancakes and coffee. The building is clean, nice diner style a lite bit of throw back which I like. Great view of people watching when you eat by the door. The service was great...the waitress and a waiter came over and talked to me introduced themselves and took time to know my name. Wow...youg people are so cool. Well I felt good here from that point on...I thought to myself if I did not live to far from here, I could see myself coming in here 3-5 days a week. The eggs were good, the sausage was nothing special, the pancakes were ordered crispy and I was not super excited by them. Overall the nreakfast food is good. I was looking for something like a crispy buttermilk melt in your mouth IHOP pancake. Don't get me wrong food was good, service was even better and this can be a place you could come to everyday. I thought I would never look at Spencer's again. Then I saw it closed and part of me hoped someone would save it. THEY HAVE! First, the food was great! No mushy white bread but real rustic, wonderful B&B type bread! WOW! Eggs ordered over easy- perfect. Sausage, wonderful! Hash browns ordered crispy, perfect! One pancake, just to try, crispy edges and delicious! And no greasy-spoon taste!!! Why, cause this was the late 90s Bulls team I was watching! THEY CARE! They, were on it! This hire, whoever did it, was perfect. Please, don't break up this team! I sat at bar #1, where the action happens! I watched and listened, and this is a real pro team. At every, rare, down moment they were scraping and cleaning the flat tops and preventing the stale grease taste from happening. Waitress was lovely and kind to all, and they seemed like a family. The omelet was great and the toast was perfectly cooked and heavily buttered--just the way it is supposed to be! Seating is pretty limited and tables are reserved for groups. There will most likely be a seat available for you at the bar if you're flying solo. The food came quickly and it was served right off the griddle. A large milk however is not "large".... I had the special so I waited longer than the rest of my party. The chicken wings and waffle were worth waiting for. I've never been served hotter or fresher chicken. The wings were huge. Nicely battered and lightly seasoned. Paired well with the light fluffy waffle and light maple syrup. Messy to eat but yum. Only one bathroom towards the kitchen but very clean and above expectations. (Had to wash my sticky fingers.) Prices were very reasonable and service was good too. We are out of towners and needed a nice no frill diner to eat at. Yelp to the rescue. We stopped by this place. So first off there is parking onsite and free wifi. We went inside and this place is not terribly big, but that's the charm because the decor and all the staffs are friendly and inviting. I was told their daily special which is a homemade meatball sandwich. Wow was that delicious or what. The meatball was flavorful and the cheese oozed and melted on top. My wife got the country chicken steak and she rarely gets that and she was amazed how tasty it was. I even asked for extra gravy sauce to dip my French fries. Hehehe. It's like being transported back to the 1950's - love it!!! From the sign out front, to eating at the counter, to the music. Plus, the food & service were excellent and reasonably priced. I could tell as soon as we pulled up, that this was a great choice. The historic downtown of Kirkwood is very nice and quaint and Spencer's has been a solid contributor since 1947. The inside is just what you would expect. From what I witnessed, almost everything is made on their griddle, which gives that great, greasy spoon experience that one goes to a diner for in the first place. Even though almost every seat was taken, the food came out quickly and every pancake or hash browns I saw go by looked perfect. The staff is young, which just lends more to the family type environment you get when you first walk in. It feels like a family restaurant and that you are a member of the family while dining. The food was great, the location is great, and this is exactly why I love Yelp, because I never would have found this without the site. Wow. I wasn't expecting this place to be good. Why? Because when we walked in, almost every seat was filled despite it being close to closing time on a Saturday afternoon, and there was literally 1 woman cooking all the food. Yeah. ONE person making everyone's food. I was pretty hungry, and my stomach groaned in protest at the fact that it would probably be another 30 mins before I got food. It ended up being more like 20 minutes but whatever, I survived! Sean took me here at his suggestion because he grew up in Kirkwood, and he hadn't eaten at Spencer's in a good 10 years. He was surprised to see all new booths and fixtures. It wasn't as grungy as I thought it would be. I mean, it's a diner, for crying out loud! Also, they have scrapple on the menu! But...It's not really "true" scrapple. Needs more organmeats, lol. The best scrapple in town was at Taste but it's no longer on the menu. My heart is forever broken. But I digress! I ordered the ...number 5, I think? It was two eggs, three strips of bacon, and two pieces of french toast. For around 5 or 6 bucks. Not bad. Affordable, I suppose. Sean ordered the same thing as I did except he asked for extra French toast, hashbrowns, and sausage. Ugh. My stomach aches just thinking about it. (See photos to better understand my feelings on the matter.) It was a feast! And while it did take a long-ish time for the food to come, it was all quite delicious in a very "plain 'n simple" kind of way. Don't expect anything fancy here, folks. But that's why it's so good. Also noteworthy--pretty much everything here is pre-fab, pre-ordered, or outsourced to some degree. They just don't have much space for making stuff. But what they do have, they use quite wisely, and it all works out pretty well. These people are really good at taking pre-fab ingredients and making it all really tasty, which is awesome. Even the cute little pies in the case are ordered from some company, but damn, did they look awesome! We are so coming back here for the pie!! I was meeting some friends for breakfast on a Tuesday morning who were passing through town on a road trip. I wanted to choose somewhere that wasn't a chain restaurant and was in close proximity to I-44, the highway they were coming through on. I immediately thought of Spencer's Grill. I was excited for this breakfast because I haven't been to Spencer's in years. It's the kind of place I won't go to on the weekends because I don't like to wait and they are always crowded. I got there a few minutes early and got a table for six people. Most of their tables are for four or just counter seating. Clean this restaurant. It's filthy,the floors ,fans and the exhaust from heater/air conditioning. The Health department needs to inspect this location. Clean the floor and windows and pick up the forks and spoons off the floor. Fix the broken shelf. These folks stand around and talk while the place is a mess. Shut it down for a day and completely clean and sanitize this space. No excuse just laziness! Won't be back!!!!! Small diner - they have about 7 tables in main part of restaurant, counter dining and a small room off the back that accommodate parties of 2 at two of the tables and a 4 top. Food is always hot when I receive it. I go mainly for breakfast. Portions are good size. Cooks and staff are young - keep in mind this is a diner. I have always had good service for the most part.
